Newport Music Hall; Columbus, OH

My wife and I's day began around 11 a.m. outside the Magnolia Thunderpussy (what a name). Being that Columbus is a two-hour drive from our home, we made sure to leave early in case there were large crowds waiting for the signing.  Fortunately, there was no one else there.  We decided to take it easy and chill and get some lunch at the diner, Skully's, next door.  After a nice vegetarian BLT, we made our way back to the record store, perusing titles in the stacks, checking out their many rad t-shirts, and chatting idly with the workers.  The place was quite cramped, so we waxed back and forth about where exactly the band would be sitting.  Once people began to arrive, we waited outside forming a casual line. We smoked many a black clove cigarette, and listened to high school girls gush over Chino's killer abs and talk about how they had all the songs on their iPods (ahh, youth).  People would come and go, buying cds and records and unwrap them in line for the band to sign.  With the exception of a gentleman behind us in a Depeche Mode shirt and a rare poster in hand, we were the most prepared and die hard fans clasping a drawing my wife did of Chino when she was only 16, and my red White Pony vinyl.

Upon entering the store around 2 p.m., a dude informed us that no pictures we allowed behind the table with the band (I suppose in an effort to save time, though there weren't THAT many people there).  They also said some bullshit about postcards and not being able to hand the band your things, but that never happened.  The band was lined up on a table in the store's back garage.  My wife explained her drawing to first Frank, Abe, Chino (who personalized it with her name and a heart, making her very happy) and then Stef and Sergio.  Everyone was very kind and receptive.  Stef commented on how strained Chino looked in the drawing and made a comment about his "sweat on the plex"...everyone got a good laugh out of that.  They also commented on my Morrissey t-shirt several times, which was also cool.

After the signing, we got back in the car and drove down N. High St. towards the venue.  We parked and checked will call, but our tickets weren't yet available since we didn't purchase through Ticketmaster.  We went down to Starbuck's and grabbed a quick caffiene fix and decided (though it was only 3 p.m.) that we would go wait in line to ensure we got a good spot at the show.  We made friends with a trio of people from Kentucky, talked about kids and life and our love for the band.  They had driven 5 hours and had been waiting there since 2 p.m.

Eventually, after a towing drama for our new Kentucky friends, we spotted a guy from a local radio station.  He asked us what our story was, how long we had been there, stuff like that.  He said he was waiting on a girl to show up for a meet and greet, but she was running late.  He asked us if we all wanted to come in too...which was just insane.  We had been complaining about all the VIP people who spent mad cashflow to get to meet the band and how they got early entry, etc.  Now, here we all were, totally oblivious, sunburned, being asked if we wanted to go in and do it for free.  The only catch is that we would lose our space in line.  On a whim, my wife turned to ask the folks behind us if they would save our spots in line...and they actually said they would.  What are the odds?
Thanks to kind strangers, we went inside the venue, got to talk with the band some more, and even got the pictures that we were denied at the signing.  Stef made fun of my freakishly long arms, Sergio assured us there would be no Quicksand reunions but that they were still good friends, Abe and Frank continued to gush over my Moz t-shirt, and Chino was being a sneaky ninja, and extremely talkative.  I asked Chino if we were going to see another drunken Waldrock tonight, to which he was surprised as my wife recited lines from the notorious show.  He launched into the whole story, talking about how he got his ass beat, etc.  My wife tried to secretly tape him talking, but apparently sucks at being a spy because it didn't work. The guards had to come tell him it was time to go, my wife got one last hug, and they were all on their way.

My wife and her new friend, Jaime, were the first people on the floor nabbing the front row center position on the wall.  People began to fill in slowly behind us.  This Will Destroy were decent.  The drummer was a mad man, but the guitars were a little too droney, not particularly complex.  The video footage they were projecting behind them was totally fucked up though...kind of made us all feel homicidal or something.  We were in a drone trance that's for sure. Next, Deftones came out to a huge crowd reaction and launched into "Diamond Eyes".  The crowd starting pushing instantly making it pretty hard to breath right off the bat.  Once the show kept on, I assured my wife it would calm down, but honestly, it never did.  People were relentlessly pushing their way up front, crowd surfing like fucking crazy, elbows, sweat flying...shit was bananas.  Chino got in the crowd a few people down from us to the right for "Elite" and had some Eminem looking dude singing the lyrics in the mic.  He grabbed our hands a couple of times the best he could.  It was pretty intense to say the least. The energy from the band was amazing.  You could tell they were vibing off the crowd.  It was great.

We haven't compiled a setlist yet since it was such a long show, but we did manage to catch a few decent pics and video clips that we will post later.  All in all, it was a pretty amazing day.  We came home bruised, ears ringing, drenched from head to toe in sweat, thirsty as shit, but totally fucking blissed out.  Out of the many Deftones shows we've been to, this was by far the best one on every level.

P.S.  They didn't play "Back to School".  Besides that, I am pretty sure your setlist is spot-on.

hahah glasstone1983, My girlfriend and I were sitting near you and your wife outside of magnolia's. That was one hell of a review, almost the same exact experience we had, but we unfortunatly didnt get to meet them in the vip meet and greet. That was my third time seeing them and I agree it was their best on every level! (my girlfriend said hi to your wife when we were walking up to the newport, if that helps you remember, small world lol.)

8 videos from the rapids theater show last night here:

http://www.youtube.com/maestro416

compared to the quality of the other videos you listed above they're fuckin stellar.

i taped diamond eyes, royal, BQAD, prince, youve seen the butcher, elite, lifter, and nosebleed.  and that setlist above is wrong.  they played pretty much the exact list of the last 2 shows without engine 9.

I post what I find, and the setlist says " incomplete, incorrect order ". So of course it's wrong.

But thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see Lifter. :)

i'll post lifter as soon as it's uploaded.  it was sick.

and if anyone wants the original AVI's of these i'd be happy to share.  they're much better without being put through the youtube-filter.

Please avoid posting direct videos, because otherwise the page will contain a bunch of them and will take ages to load correctly. I'll post your links under the setlist. ;)
