Post by: lostpilot on May 16, 2009, 06:38 PM
well, I wouldn't call that school, it's university lol.
if you're asking about this year, about a month (two full weeks of lectures and two weeks of scattered exams which I fear sooo badly). generally I'm okay.. got back from a tripping session out in my friends villa.. we sort of almost got lost in the woods while sooo high, that was quite disturbing but nonetheless exciting.

generally it's okayyyyyyyyy.

as for me, I'm doing well. Just watching some tube (Sons of Anarchy). Also, been real busy working lately (remodeling). but that takes away from my time getting a different job. I'm so sick of manual labor. I need a career.

yeah, I'm in the third year of my university, one more year left and I have my bachelors degree..
and then off to the world I guess.

of course, I'm steadily writing new music (at this moment, sixth album (or should I say, my third full length release - cause I do not really consider Dreams series as "full-lenght" as, say, Strange Lights and Ornaments or Lonesome Sky in H Minor), "Constellations"). Really putting much work into, hope the audience will be pleased as I was pleased while writing that shittttttttt

what's your job anyway?
Title: Re: @ bright lights, big city
Post by: bright lights, big city on Jan 13, 2010, 05:05 PM
I do remodeling of kitchens and bathrooms and shit. It's mostly alright because it is with one of my real good friends, but at the same time I just don't want to be doing this. So I dunno, mixed feelings about it all, just wish something mega-sweet would just drop in my lap right now

And dude, 6th album? Amazing. You've done that in like 2 years? :o

I mean, like, what's your "real life call"..

yeah. 6th album. The other five were released since summer 2009.. yeah, half a year, five albums.
But fear not - lol - they had been written during some 3-4 years. so I'm pretty sure I'm not going to release, like, ten albums in 2010..
maybe some, I don't know, five - four, lulz, productivity!

i've been eating grapes and shit like that for dessert lately. maybe the occasional oreo or homemade cookie now and then when i'm feeling fancy.

hey i'm mr. healthy these days. can't go around weighing 300 lbs. or 136 kg since you're into the metric system.

all i seem to eat is potato chips. they have to be crinkle cut or it's no gold medal.

i haven't had a good biscuit in a while. did you know oreo's are vegan? you're halfway there. might as well go all the way.

i actually did do that after i graduated. i was actually just under 300 lbs but i hid it well since i'm 6 foot 5. i changed everything. stopped drinking for a while, no more pudding or ice cream. eating less at meals (a buddy of mine and myself would sometimes eat like a pound of pasta with dinner). now i drink TONS of tea, fruit, vegetables, and everything is whole wheat. now my weight is hovering around 185.

but i'm slowly easing back into some sweets lately, especially candy.

you need a strong upper body, which i have. i want to go down to the local rock climbing place and start on the beginners, which i got told is mostly populated by school children. my boss' best friend tried it and he realised that he totally over estimated the whole situation and stopped immediately because it was too difficult. he's a big guy too.

Rock climbing is a lot of fun.  It's really not as hard as you're making it out to be.  I am not trying to be insulting, but I can tell that you haven't really been taught how to properly go rock climbing because you said that you need a strong upper body.  Rock climbing is at least 80% legs.  You push yourself up with your legs, and just use your forearms to keep you from falling back.  Which I admit can fatigue your forearms pretty good.  But if you know what your doing your upper body shouldn't have much to do with rock climbing.

All that being said, I live in Joshua Tree, CA.  Which is supposed to have some of the best rock climbing in the U.S. , and I have never been rock climbing out here.  It's not going to happen any time soon either because I have a torn Labrum and and awaiting shoulder surgery.
Title: Re: @ bright lights, big city
Post by: blixa on Jan 09, 2011, 01:39 PM
i was told that you would need upper body strength for rock climbing. my brothers friends all rock climb and they're all football players so they do have a lot of strength in their legs but found it excruciating on their arms. to me it always felt like you'd be hoisting yourself up and your arms are a major key.
Title: Re: @ bright lights, big city
Post by: Variable on Jan 09, 2011, 02:07 PM
Yeah I know that it seems like you would be using your arms a lot, but thats not how you're supposed to do it.

I guess I could have told you the story of how I know this.  I have messed around on a few rock walls.  It was not the first time I went rock climbing but maybe the 3rd or 4th.  I was with some friends and when I came down I was complaining about how smoked my arms were, especially my forearms.  One of the guys that worked there overheard me and explained how I was doing it wrong.  He watched me go back up and said that I was doing it like a noob because I was using my arms and not my legs.  Then he pointed out some pretty serious rock climbers and how they were doing it.  It all clicked after that.  I mean your leg muscles are so much bigger and stronger than you arm muscles, it only makes sense that you would want to use them over your arm muscles.

It doesn't feel natural at all when you first start trying to climb the wall with your leg.  Obviously we are having this conversation because it feels natural to try and use your arms to climb the wall.  It feels so natural that most people don't even consider using their legs until they are told otherwise.  You can see that even your athletic male friends did it wrong, I'm guessing due to a lack of instruction.

So anyways, thats that.  I didn't mean to get all technical on you.  I just thought I would share the knowledge.  Here is a video on how to rock climb using the lest amount of energy.

Intermediate Rock Climbing : How to Rock Climb with the Least Energy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G839uQf0kfc#)

Post by: blixa on Jan 09, 2011, 02:55 PM
i agree that you don't need to entirely depend on your arms, but i kind of assumed that it would be like tree climbing, which i've done a lot and my upper body has always come in handy. maybe i shouldn't rock climb and stick to running or something. my brother said he would take me next time he went.

also that guys voice was very annoying hahaha

Running is great exercise but I HATE running.  I actually just found out yesterday that if you run a mile it burs the exact same amount of calories as if you walk a mile.  I had a really hard time believing that, but I looked it up and sure as shit its true.  Now obviously running will burn you more calories per hour, and strengthen your cardiovascular system better.  But I just found that interesting.

Rock climbing is great exercise too.  It's very unique exercise as well.  You really should try it.  Combine it with running.  It's not so good for you body to run every day.  The impact on your knees and hips it just too much.  So It's good to mix up different cardio work outs in between runs.

When I was actually working out like I should be doing now; I would run every other day and do the elyptical machine on the days in between.  As well as take an off day every 5 days.  This worked very well for me.  Yeah a guy looks really lame on the elyptical.  But I was in great shape and my body wasn't breaking down.

I also really enjoy swimming.

I didn't know that either, very interesting. That said, I still like running the most. I have NEVER been able to climb anything. As a kid in gym class when we had to climb ropes, I just couldn't do it. Nowadays when my buddies and I go frolfing, and the frisbees get stuck in the trees, I can't get climb. Someone else always has to do it, since my only solution is to sit back and throw shit at the tree.

My girl arms are probably why I never played football in high school. At least I've got some talent for basketball and baseball.

ha.  Ironically climbing a rope is another thing that you're supposed to execute by using your legs,

I have always been a really strong swimmer.  I think it has a lot to do with me growing up in Florida.  I was on swim team when I was young.  Even made it to the Junior Olympics.  But I gave it up because I got sick of it.  I was doing really good so I guess my parents wanted to tap into that and started having me two a days.  So I would wake up early to swim, then when I got off from school and all my friends wanted to go play and stuff, I couldn't because I had to go swim.  Then my parents thought I got too good for the swim team I was on.  So we had to start driving an hour away so that I could get with a better team.  Then the coaches started making me swim with the next age group up because they said I was too good for my age group.  So pretty much I just got sick of all of it and quit.

But swimming is still very natural to me.  I don't get a chance to do it very often, but when I do I love it.  And I'm still fast ;) lol I just have absolutely no endurance.

Post by: bright lights, big city on Jan 17, 2011, 04:46 PM
oh please no.

But yeah, anyways, I feel like a complete idiot because I met this amazing girl at my friend's wedding on Saturday. I didn't bring a date because I hate dancing (that's what I keep telling myself at least), and she was at my table with the guy who brought her, some other douche friend of the groom. He's a World of Warcraft dork so I immediately felt more qualified than him (sorry to any WoW players on this site). We were talking sports and movies during dinner and seem to hit it off, then the dancing starts and the dude disappears! So we dance for like an hour and a half (again, even though I can't dance).

A couple of other people at our table who I'm friends with tell me throughout the night that she seems more interested in me than she is with her date. I chalk that up to drunk-talk. Her "date" eventually shows up on the dance floor and says something to her, so I immediately offer to back off and let him take over for me, but he says "no, no it's cool man". So to wrap this story up, she ends up leaving with the guy, even though I'm starting to come around to the fact that maybe this beautiful woman for some reason likes me..... and that's it. No phone numbers exchanged, nothing. The next day I'm talking to my dad about the night, and he asks if I ever think that maybe she just tagged along with the guy just because maybe they were friends and he didn't want to come alone, like the loser that I am.

I'm convinced now that's what the deal was, and I fucked up a big chance at something huge. I need to find this girl.

end of random story

once when i was 14, sydney's water got sort of contaminated. they told us to not drink tap water because there was something in the pipes. anyway, i came home from school one day and poured myself a glass of tap water. i was very thirsty and i figured that you would have to consume a shitload of tap water for it to actually affect you. my dad walked into the kitchen as i was drinking the water and stood next to me. he asked me what i was doing and i said i was drinking some water. he asked me if it was tap water and i said yes. he then grabs the glass off me and throws the water in my face and says, in a very serious and threateningly low voice, "we don't drink tap water in this house."

i was so shocked. i cried and cried after he walked away. it was so cruel, but oh so fucking funny.

he's stubborn and hard-headed. no use having an argument with him. like the other night i stayed up till 2:30am because we were having a discussion about heaven and what you'd have to do to get there. he said anyone who wasn't baptised and didn't accept christ as their lord and saviour would go to hell regardless of whether they have been a good person or not. of course i couldn't agree with that because i said it was "unchristian" to think that way to which he says, "bitch, itz in tha bible!" or something along those lines.

it was a highly distressing discussion. my voice got really hoarse afterwards and i was mighty depressed that my father, who is a very intelligent man, can have opinions like this. argh. he waves at mormons in the street! he also loves gandhi. shit, i should have asked him if he thought that gandhi was in hell.

Title: Re: @ bright lights, big city
Post by: bright lights, big city on Apr 28, 2011, 12:23 AM
I hear you. I just have to dislike them since they pretty much became one our top rivals the last few years, and it's funny that their fans have massive heart attacks whenever Luongo loses a couple games. most of the time i do pull for the canadian teams though. Speaking of which, I was just having a conversation with a friend reminiscing about all the old teams in the 90s before they moved south, and wishing they would go back. That's what so unusual but great about hockey; I enjoy watching most of the teams and have been fans of a lot of different teams. I love the Hawks, but I used to really like Hartford and Winnipeg. The last decade or so it's been more Buffalo, Ottawa and Calgary.

But have you heard the rumors about the Coyotes moving back to Winnipeg? I REALLY hope they go back home this offseason. Fuck Phoenix.

In all honesty, this first round of playoffs (NHL and NBA actually) has been the most entertaining to watch as far back as i can remember. Thank god there's still 6 weeks of this to go.

Would they change the name back to the jets too?

I'm not big on Basketball, and it's hard to follow the stanley cup (and nhl in general) over here. Most games are played in the middle of the night here. And i have to watch them on the web in shitty quality. Luckily nhl.com has all the highlights and stuff. But it has been really exciting so far in almost all the series.

I think they would be the Winnipeg Jets again, but it's still not written in stone. I just hope that city gets them back this year. It would also be interesting to see what happens with the divisions if they do move.

maybe once a year I get there for the Bulls. Tickets are really expensive though, kind of like the Blackhawks now. Their's used to be really cheap until, well, they got good. A big regret of mine is never seeing the old Chicago Stadium. I've heard tons of stories of crazy and loud it was in there. Would've been awesome to see MJ in there in the early 90s.

yes. Im glad i could watch mj playing on tv, but see him on the stadium would be unbelievable. Michael Jordan is one of the best players of every sport (except baseball) of all times.

man, talking about the city of Chicago, my father said the people there are very educated, with an aspect of interior citizens cities, even living on a big an beautiful city. well, that was just an overview but I believe thats true.

I was last there in Aug/Sept last year and went to the Sears Tower (Which is actually the Willis Tower now) and stood on that plexiglass...shit scared me! my mum took me to get my ears pierced when i was a very small child. i don't remember this happening but while my mother was paying for the piercing i wondered out onto the sidewalk and someone stole my new earrings right out of my ears. i just stood and let them do it. not that there was anything i could've done about it hahaha.

i kind of promised myself that i'm not getting any more piercings. i got told that i now appear even more standoffish with them.

really? with what, 3 earrings? i've seen a lot women with at least twice that many earrings. I wouldn't necessarily associate having multiple ear piercings with being standoffish. but then again, i'm the just world's most understanding guy.

oh I'll tell you what's up duder. It's like 96 degrees here, so I guess about 36 Celsius for you. I had nothing to do today so I went outside for a run this morning. I lasted about 5 minutes before saying "fuck it", and going back home. And since then my roomy and I have just been sitting in our boxers, drinking pink lemonade and catching up on tv watching (Game of Thrones is so great) in glorious air conditioning. A visual of that last sentence really seems kind of gay, but hey we're bros.

On the agenda for the rest of the day? Laugh at people wearing suits in upper 90 degree temperatures, grill some burgers, play some video games. It's everything you think it could be... and so much more.

So yeah what's poppin' with you pal?

It is lame. If it ain't crowded, I'm more of a guy that would rather play catch with a football or frisbee.

But the main reason is the cold water. And sluts.

it gets cold in australia. fair enough, there's no snow but the cold is still bad. our summer's are the worst though. undisputed fact. i've been in america during summer. it's like our spring.

the beach is the devil. dams are better for swimming. the water is cleaner.
Title: Re: @ bright lights, big city
Post by: Crazylegs on Jun 08, 2011, 06:23 PM
That depends on the beach doesn't it. I much prefer swimming in salt water.

Post by: blixa on Jun 08, 2011, 06:38 PM
if you're ever in australia, don't go to bondi. don't listen to what you hear. don't swim in that beach. newcastle beach is the best beach i've been to. cronulla is nice too, but there's a subtle hint of racism there if you are not white or don't look white.

some beaches on lake michigan get pretty filthy. but the way I look at it, is that if it's good enough for 9 million people to drink from it's good enough for people to swim in.

there's some pipping that got fucked up at bondi so there is some poop floating around there. newcastle is the cleanest beach i've ever been to. it's just beautiful there.

I remember some girl in middle school started a rumor that if your adams apple sticksout a lot than you have a big penis. I have a big neck and a big adams apple that protrudes a lot. So girls started thinking that I have a huge penis. Than some girl I went out with started telling people I had a small penis after I broke up with her, even though she had never seen it. That shit spread through out the whole school. I'm friends with her on facebook now though.

i'm sure if you talk to a few lesbians they will tell you just how much they like vagina's.

this whole discussion in this thread prompted me to talk about it with my friend tonight over coffee. we talked about how we feel about our vagina's. she said she was always paranoid about the smell issue. i have this habit where i put my favourite lotion (vanilla-frangipani scented) on the inside of my thighs and that tends to smell amazing. i told her to do something similar to feel a bit more confident. she also said that white guys tend to have long slightly thin penises, which i went very 'ewwwwww' about.

I can't really get into it. A few of the beats are cool, like Niggas In Paris. The Beyonce song is good too. But I'm really enjoying any of the lyrics at all; it's basically 2 rich a-holes rapping about 2 rich a-holes. I'm also really tired of Otis already.

You talking about "No One Believes Me"? I dig Dot's production and beats, and Cudi starts out alright. But he doesn't go anywhere and makes too many random noises.

Is this the new rock sound he's doing, or is more the sound of A Man Named Scott?

I'm living a day-to-day life with my job and all. My job is OK, it's mainly about interacting with customers, solving their issues, selling stuff - I am satisfied with the work hours as well (I get lots of days off). So yeah, I don't know. I've been living a localized life which is satisfying me a lot though at the same time there is this feeling that I might be missing out on something else in life. I'm not sure, but what can you do :)

Are you happy though? I started a writing and copy-editing gig recently and 95% of the job is staying at home. The pay sucks, but I really don't care. I've got my routine: do some work which I kind of like, hang out a lot with my friends, play video games. That's basically my life lately, but I'm perfectly happy for now doing some sitting on my ass and living in my shell.

I feel so weird repeating how much I like a Beyonce song. But good news, I've grown to like a few more tracks. Mainly the couple that feature Frank Ocean. The opener is awesome. I think I just still have a problem (for some reason) with a lot Jay-Z's raps.

You know anyone that would maybe want to buy it? It's bad ass,and hate to see it just sitting there. It's an official NHL CCM one,I can't find a pic of it from the site I ordered it.

I liked that problem when I lost weight. I bought an Ottawa Senators hoodie right before I made the transition from fatso to crackhead. It's amazing how humongous it is on me now. But with the Hawks hoodie, i can ask the couple friends I have that are actual hockey fans. I got friends of all sizes. What size is it?

3 weeks, eh? sweet, you might be around for the start of hockey season!

if you're looking for a pub though, Tommy Nevin's is pretty good and in Evanston, which is close to Skokie. but that could be a little too upscale for my tastes. if you want a seedy watering hole, you gotta hit up Bucktown or Rogers Park. and if you want bottom of the barrel type of places, then god help you, because I don't really want a death sentence.

Title: Re: @ bright lights, big city
Post by: chick de la lynch on Aug 22, 2012, 07:52 AM
Haha, yeah SoCal ain't cheap! But there's plenty to do depending on where you go and if you stay in LA you can pretty much drive to a shitload of places and have some fun. And there's beaches, however a lot of them are gross due to pollution. :/

Yeah I know a bro from college in Seal Beach, but I'd feel like a shithead asking to stay with him now that he's married. And I think it's far away from where I've always to go (like Ventura, Manhattan, Santa Monica). Like to check out the Inland Empire too, and get my David Lynch on (I don't know what that means).

Haha, exactly! I have been to the Inland Empire quite frequently the past year due to friends living out there now and there's pretty much nothing. One of my good friends would never leave there--she loves the I.E. It has a few things like some nice malls (Victoria Gardens, Ontario Mills) and a water park (Raging Waters) and 24 hour Wal-Mart's scattered everywhere. That's about it. Not to mention it's hotter than hell out there!

Your friend lives down the road from me. Seal Beach is nice. It's somewhat close to Disneyland, too (I have no idea if you have any interest in going) Santa Monica pier is a great place to walk around, even better if you have a girlfriend. I just went to Manhattan Beach last week and it's beautiful. I could go on about all the stuff down here. Even though I complain there's nothing to do here, there's a lot to do here.

haha, I know man, but I still wanna go. Would totally go to Joshua Tree. And the Salton Sea. See, I.E. would be awesome. I WANT to see absolutely nothing. The closest thing to nothing around me is cornfields everywhere. Aside from freaking me out at night because of Signs, those fields to nothing for me. A desert of nothing would be awesome to see.

And Disneyland would be nice. I'll admit I love Disney World. My cousin classed it up and actually just got married there last New Year's. Was a pretty cool experience to be there for the holidays.
Title: Re: @ bright lights, big city
Post by: chick de la lynch on Aug 23, 2012, 09:25 AM
I hear DisneyWorld is better, but I just went to Disneyland not too long ago after 10 years not going and it was a nice experience. It was weird because all the years my parents brought me and my brother to Disneyland we never went into Toon Town. EVER. My parents probably wanted to avoid all the bratty children and go on the adult rides. I felt so deprived when I went back and realized there was a whole part of the park I had never been to before. Explains a lot since my mother hated Disneyland. The Alice in Wonderland ride is my favorite, but then again it's my favorite Disney film.

I worked at Knott's Berry Farm for over a year (PLEASE DON'T GO THERE!) and it jaded me as far as amusement parks go (A big reason why  it took me so long to go back to Disneyland). The fireworks made me tear up a bit, I'm not going to lie. As far as getting a season pass like my friends and my dad and step-mom, probably not. That shiz is a lot of money!

Handlebar sounds like a hipster place, do I need a mustache to get inside? Seriously though, sounds ok, just need to find a night I can get free. I have a bachelor party Saturday, I wonder if there are any strip clubs near there.

I believe North Bend is in up in Washington. And at least that's where I'd imagine they filmed a lot of Twin Peaks, X-Files, Fringe, etc.

Unless you mean South Bend which is nearby in... ugh, Indiana.

I had really only heard pstereo until a little while ago when this album started showing up in album of the year discussions over here, so i thought i better check it out. And i really like it.

I think you'd like Susanne Sundfør aswell, if you're not already aware of her. She released a great album two years ago called The Silicone Veil. This is the first single from that one (also one of my favorite songs that year, for sure!):

I think I have heard that song, it's so familiar. Just don't know where. But it's legit. Gonna check out some more of her too. Apparently she's got a new one out in February.

Also, what a babe, haha.

EDIT:
Maybe it wasn't that song I'd heard. I know the voice from the Oblivion soundtrack with M83!

Haha, yeah, lots of good heavy releases this year! Though, one of the my most anticipated releases is the new Father John Misty album.

I'm doing good! And so is she. She's an intern in Ireland right now. The long distance has been tough, but luckily its not that expensive to travel to Ireland. She gets home at the end of January. Really looking forward to it. :) After that we're gonna find an apartment together, so things are looking good.

How's life treating you?

I think my brother read Infinite Jest twice and I don't know how he did it. It took me an hour to get through ten pages. Then again, he's a James Joyce fan and read him all throughout high school, and reads Kant for fun so I'm sure Infinite Jest was easier to get through.

Kant! Noooo! In college, I got stuck taking a class called History of the Enlightenment (I got lazy and the cooler history classes were full), and Kant and David Hume featured heavily in it. The professor was a German lady who half the class couldn't even understand. All I understood was that she had  the biggest lady boner for Kant. And I'll think of Kant since the way she said his name sounded like she kept saying "cunt".

Haha, Kant was probably a cunt considering the fact that man makes no sense.

Kant has his own damn language. I can read one of his sentences ten times and still not understand a damn thing that man is trying to say. And for some reason my brother enjoys reading his works. I just don't get it. Plus why couldn't I inherit that gene of reading and understanding scholarly crap? Maybe it's better I was the one who got common sense...
