I already started a metal thread but there wasn't much discussion of doom and its variations so we can recommend and discuss the strange and plodding behemoth that is doom in this thread.
Current Favorites: Khanate (drone/doom), Bongzilla (stoner doom), Catacombs (funeral doom)
jeez, I love these genres but when I've first listened to Sunn O))) I was sick for 4 days...
I like Doomgaze a lot. It's something like drone+doom
Favs are The Angelic Process, early Jesu, Vanessa Van Basten and some others
Never was into pure doom. Too metal for me.

Lol as a result of listening to Sunn O)))? Drone is such a hit or miss genre but there are some amazing groups out there. Try Black Boned Angel.

It's funny that you say that since I don't like doomgaze considering it isn't metal enough. I heard Nadja and thought it was just shoegaze until someone mentioned it was called doomgaze and that made me laugh. Differents strokes. I do like Jesu if I'm in the mood though.
Bongzilla is fucking cool.
Definitely check out Sleep. I'll upload some when I get home.
Yeah, I just recently got into Bongzilla and I'm hooked for sure. Have heard a few Sleep tracks and liked them. Earth is also pretty damn good.
i like some sunn o))), earth, fear falls burning, nadja and - of course - jesu.
if you like ambient-electronic-drone you NEED to check out Harmony In Ultraviolet (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AV3R7XBT)
i am also into alot of sludge/doom metal. there is so much atmospherical-doom metal stuff out there these days, i keep discovering new bands every day :D

Everyone should be required to hear Dopesmoker by Sleep at least once. That album is simply mind-blowing. If you blast it on a decent soundsystem with the right mix it essentially will blow your head right off. Plus some of the lyrics are ridiculous enough to make you laugh out loud.
when i first listened to "barthory erzsebet" of sunn o))) 's black one i felt fear for the first time ever when listening to music.
i would also say that i never had such a strong emotion (may it be excitement, gladness etc.) to any kind of music.
i listened to it at 3 at night with my headphones on in the dark. i refused to get out of my bed afterwarts for 10 minutes or so.
Some of that drone is ridiculously overwhelming but that's what makes it great. That's why I enjoy some of the funeral doom as well. Try Catacombs cranked up full blast and tell me it isn't creepy.
Have anyone checked The Goslings?
No, what do they sound like?
I love doom and stonery shit.
Boris, Electric Wizard, Sunn0))), Earth, Khanate, Baroness is doomy at times, Eyehategod, Fu Manchu, Bongzilla, Orange Goblin, Goatsnake, Graves at Sea, Kinski, Middian, Minsk...there's a butt-ton more that I dig on.
A good resource for finding doom, drone and stoner rock bands is www.stonerrock.com

Electric Wizard..........Minsk
Just downloaded albums by each bands, "Witchcult Today" and "Out Of A Center Which Is Neither Dead Nor Alive", respectively.
Though I've known Electric Wizard longer, I've never actually listened to them but first glimpses seem promising.
A review I read about that Minsk's album seemed promising too: "There is nothing happy about this band. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. There is no hope, no glimmer of better things to come or brighter tomorrows, only the crass, cold reality of the void that is here and now." :)
Sludge/doom/neurosis-kind stuff.
Also downloaded "Lost To The Living" by a doom/death band called Daylight Dies. Sounds ok.

yes, its ambient-style drone. i think there are a few guys of kayo dot in this band, but there is not much information.
you can listen to their album online on their site (http://www.hydrahead.org/hh/pyramids_site/)
Just bought the Relapse Contamination Festival DVD. Has live performances by Daylight Dies, Bongzilla, Neurosis, Alabama Thunderpussy and Mastodon. Good shit.

I would classify the first Sabbath album as doom.
yes, but not the others.
I read some pages and they say DOOM, but I never considered them as doom. I think when doom was invented than they added them such label.
They really are not doom but if you listen to bands that are classified as traditional or even some of the stoner doom bands you can hear where the Sabbath influence is. The slower, atmospheric songs and some downtuning are apparent in the first few albums and that is where the genre took its sound from. Not doom but definitely one of the greatest influences on doom.

02. Waiting For The Light
03. Blessed Be The Dead
04. Sightless
05. Upon Within
06. Burning
07. Is There
08. Tomorrows Dead
09. Essence Of Black
10. Embrace

Well... dunno if I'm right, but speaking about stoner, I've catched a little similarity between QOTSA and Black Sabbath... (it's stoner rock?? I think, because Doom or Stoner Doom i don't think so...) but yeah, Black Sabbath has influence in many many bands nowadays... old school Black Sabbath..
maybe this is pointless in this thread, but just wanted to notice that...
Nope, a good point! Stoner rock is close enough to, and gets its influences from, doom, such as Sabbath. Like Monster Magnet for example, or Clutch.
Anyone listen to Bloodlet?
doomgaze is awesome.
The Angelic Process: Weighing Souls With Sand is fast bocoming one of my favorite albums of all time.
and Nadja is also excellent.
The Goslings are alright, but more closely resemble Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine or Black Noise Cannon than either of the aforementioned groups.

It's CRAP.

Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method is my favorite Earth album. It sounds like a drone band playing country. Like...the soundtrack to a spaghetti western if it were made today. It's awesome.

hm, the link is down :( but thank you anyways.
zozobra is great, i totally fell in love with their first album.
i also like methadrone, especially because they make a very melodic style of drone metal.
the guy who did the vocals on the last methadrone album "sterility" has its own band called "fragment.".
its very Jesu-style drone metal, maybe you like it. i found two of their releases so far.

Nekad is better, dude!
You know, maybe you're right. They were playing a very small show this weekend, and opened with ''Part 18'' I got to say - That is one hell of an Opener!!
Bw. New album should be out sometime this fall..
Part 97 is like loooove looove loooove <3
it's so absolutely great.
Good to hear, that someone likes this band.
If you're into some classy Harcore/screamo, You should check out ''In.stora - Miasma'' 2/3 of Tesa played in that band.

Alright, I need some good sludge recommendations. Anyone able to list off two or three groups for me? I've only heard a few acts (EyeHateGod and Acid Bath) and want to dig deeper.
I guess I'd count Intronaut as sludge-ish. Kylesa, Neurosis, Black Tusk. Is Baroness considered sludge? Either way listen to them.
Baroness is definitely sludge. Early Mastodon too. Anyway this:

It's retardedly good. The riffage is strong in these guys.
For real. Atma was among my favorites in 2011 I believe. Now they strike again... this is quite simply, the tits.
I was kinda lucky how i got into these guys. I wen't to a smoke sale in a record store i frequent and got atma on vinyl for hella cheap, like 70% off, before i ever really heard them. I was sold 100% after the first listen.

Strange, I really like his voice. Love the new album.
Anyone digging the new Earth album?
haven't gotten around to it yet. Any good?
Yeah, it's great. The guest vocals gives a nice touch...especially the song with Mark Lanegan rules!
I'm listening to Baroness' red album for the first time in so long (too long). My god this album is fucking good!
There's a wicked Doom band from Calgary called Witchstone.

Also, the 'With the Dead' album is some of the best doom I've heard in years.
Thanks for that one Theis. I've never really checked these guys out properly. The vocals sound pretty lame in my ears, but the riffage is legit.
Even though I prefer my doom vocals to be grim and harsh, I like them here. Reminds me of the old school stuff like Pentagram and Sabbath.
Yeah, i see what you mean, but we're definitely talking dio-era sabbath. Did you go see Pentagram last month (i'm assuming they played copenhagen too)? I was considering it, but i've honestly never really been a fan of them either.
God it's been so long since I felt so behind on music. Gonna check out dat Goatsnake and Uncle Acid.

Glad you like Reptile Master, man. They released their album on this little label called Blues for the Red Sun (wonder what the inspiration for that name was) which just started up in 2014, and there are only three bands and a few releases so far. Atma is such a massive song.

We've been on a roll lately of weak albums released, a true invasion with cheesy bands releasing shite music, on other hand. Holy Mountain, cool stuff. Proper Review: "This Scottish three-piece emerged on the scene in 2012 with a penchant for old-school heavy metal and a desire to tear up any stage they were on with their brand of hard-hitting riffs and explosive cosmic atmospherics, making them a premier group in the stoner/desert rock genre. They didn't waste any time either on the mind numbing, anthropomorphous debut album Earth Measures, creating a vortex into other realms on tracks like the epically destructive, Hendrix inspired 'Swiftly F**kwits Pts I & 2' or the instant hit opener 'Gunner, showing the raw potential that this band had so early on in their career. They cranked the sound dials up even further in 2014 with the release of Ancient Astronauts, an album of unfathomable weight as evidenced by the darkly bewitching, blunt hammer blows of 'Star Kings' or the spaced out, vocal summoning of the title track - examples of just how expertly Holy Mountain weave their fantastic mythology into their musical output. The burning intensity of Holy Mountain's guitar playing is searing on the slow-moving, stone pillar '100 Miles A Day' or the breakneck speed transitioning, riff monster 'Gift Giver', helping to concoct a record of ear shattering bliss. Rumors suggest a new album will hit this year, making 2016 one to relish for fans of earthshaking, retro heaviness."

Sweet! Really looking forward to both of these albums.
Saw SUMAC last night. It was a sonic earthquake. Just amazing.
Oh shit! I really wish i could have seen them a few weeks ago when i was in Germany. They played the night before true widow and chelsea wolfe. True Widow had a higher priority for me though, and i wasn't going to go two days. I can imagine how fucking brutal their live show must be, some of their tunes are just retarded heavy!

Totality, the new album from Norwegian/Swedish Tuba-sludge rockers was released on Friday. Solid stuff.

That video hurts so good!
For those who like their sludge with a little extra filth and dirt on the top.

Simply immense and powerful. Fuck, I love YOB a lot.
ALSO HOW ABOUT THAT NEW SLEEP ALBUM!?
new Sleep blew me away. Came from out of nowhere, and it sounds like they just picked up right where left off, like there wasn't a 19 year gap between albums. Love it.
Yob = my most anticipated!
Sleep took me completely by surprise as well. I had forgot, or had no idea, that an album was even on the way.
