Title: Minus the Bear
Post by: ben on Sep 08, 2008, 11:17 PM
Who else loves this fucking band?  I'm at work chilling to Planet of Ice, can't wait until they release some new stuff.
Title: Re: Minus the Bear
Post by: lostpilot on Sep 09, 2008, 01:08 AM
I love them!

Planet of Ice and Menos el Oso were a bit different from their earlier stuff, so I'm not that a fan of those albums.. In my opinion, They Make Beer Commercials Like This EP is the best thing they've ever written. And the first half (or a bit more) of Highly Refined Pirates.

Nonetheless - great band! Ah, songs like Lotus, Hey! is that a Ninja up There?, We are Not a Football Team.. epic, god damn epic!

i love minus the bear.  what did you guys think of the daytrotter sessions?  i think they sound great acoustic.

i haven't heard those, i bet they'd be amazing acoustic.  minus the bear is definitely a top 5 band for me.  i think i love every single song i've ever heard by them.  planet of ice, menos el oso, they make beer commercials like this, and highly refined pirates all tie in their amazingness to me.  i've seen them live more than any other band, like 5 times, and i'm about to see them again in october.  really fun to dance to when you're all fucked up.

my favorite piece of work by them is  the "They Make Beer Commercials Like This" EP. after that I've seen them live in 2004, and they played 4 of 6 songs from the EP and 'Highly Refined Pirares' stuff. just wonderful. the two concerts last year didn't even come close to that, though I also appreciate the newer albums.

Awesome band. I had only heard Planet of Ice until last week. I'm going to see them tomorrow and I wanted to get more familiar with their other material. I really like Menos el Oso. and Highly Refined Pirates. Now I just have to check out their EP's. I was going to go to the show having only heard Planet of Ice but then I figured it would be more enjoyable if I were moderately familiar with more of their material. Should be awesome.

A few favorites:

Burying Luck
Pachuca Sunrise
Knights
Hooray
The Pig War
This Ain't A Surfin' Movie
Lotus
Title: Re: Minus the Bear
Post by: alvarezbassist17 on Oct 17, 2008, 06:17 AM
they fuckin ripped it last night, played a few new tunes, and 3 ones acoustic.  pachuca sunrise is totally awesome acoustic.  i was ridiculously high for it, and it was good.  new stuff sounded very promising

oh and they played the pig war and i'm totally not down with rob's alien, which i hadn't seen live previously, and rocked my socks.

hey,
I have a nice find

this is pre-Minus the Bear band, Sharks Keep Moving..
I see this as the good (pretty much no electronica) part of Minus the Bear
I found their self-titled album

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7MB7F4RB

which is just awesome.
I advise you to get it ASAP. it's mostly instrumental - as in MtB-ish instrumental.
supercool guitar work etc :)

Title: Re: Minus the Bear
Post by: lostpilot on Oct 31, 2009, 03:24 PM
I just listened to it once and did not care much, cause I don't want to spoil the fun of whole album.
I mean, this usually happens - I get a new single, overlisten to it to a phase when I cannot listen to it anymore.. and then the album comes out. Nope. I liked the song, but I'm holding my happiness for the album :)

yeah that is a great song, and there is no denying that their older material is phenominal. my problem with most of this new album is the new direction they are going. I was able to handle and enjoy Planet of Ice, but Omni is going to take at least half a dozen listens for me to get into it.

What?  Seriously?  Wow, I can't believe you guys really think it's THAT bad.  I feel like the synth has always been a pretty prevalent, maybe not as much as Omni, but it's not like it's some brand new direction.  I really like it so far, I kinda wish they would've incorporated China White somewhere, I love that song.  If I have any complaints, it's that the overall feel of the album didn't really turn out the way I thought it would after hearing that song and Into the Mirror.

the music just doesnt have the same energy. it sounds lathargic and uninspired.

just boring imo

this. and they're falling away from the genre that I LOVED about them. now it's all only about electronics everywhere - Minus the Bear, 65dos.. Eh.
well said about both bands.

it all makes me wanna cry :(

id like to think its still too early for a RIP

Haha, come on. You can be such a drama queen, man.

Listened through this album twice, not feeling it at all. To freaking cheesy for my taste really.

definitely feel you.  i liked broken china a lot when it came out and thought into the mirror was ok but more or less a throwaway song for mtb.  i liked my time when it came out.  loved the catchyness and pop sensibilities and everything but i was really hoping that was just like the pop song of the album.  i think i was really expecting something more like planet of ice.  ive listened to it about 2 and a half times now and i just find myself becoming more and more disappointed.

I've always though their lyrics are cheesey to be honest.
All the songs are about drinkin and pulling chicks - don't mind general lyrics so much, but as a whole was very disappointed with the album.

Got one of my friends onto Planet of Ice - and she dug it. Showed her Omni, and she said "WTF, sounds like Matchbox 20"

Kinda ruined it for me right there.

I actually enjoyed the new songs live when I saw them a month ago...but yeah, the new album got old pretty quickly.

Meeeeeeeh.
Listened through it once but the experience just was not rewarding.

I am becoming old and stupid since I bitch about every single new decision any of old bands that I used to listen to makes.

Dear Minus The Bear, I am sorry but this is not working for me anymore.
But its not just you, its also me. We grew apart like an old couple. I didn't like Omni, but decided to stick with you for one last album, in hope that things would change. But nothing changed, I find this album just as boring.

Your concerts were fun and I will listen to your old stuff from time to time, so peace out
