Ah this is so unfair.  Just because you are in the military does not mean you are not a free thinking human!  lol but I don't have time to defend myself because I have a 30 min time limit and I have already been on for a while.  Ghey

I don't think it works like that.  You can be a conscientious objector but I believe you spend your conscientious objecting in the brig until your time is up.

But to answer your question, yes.  Never say never.  If they tried telling me I had to start "counter terrorist" operations on US soil, that would be too much for me to swallow.  I know that at the moment we are already in a shit storm of illegal and unconstitutional situations.  But if anything was that blatantly unconstitutional I would straight pack up and leave.  Or something else like it.

As far as things are going today?  No.  I have seen the enemy, looked them right in the eye.  They are as real as me.  There're are some real haters out there.  Now, it gets complicated because I do believe that ( as Ron Paul says ) this is due to the blow back of our country being there in the first place.  I believe we should pull out of the middle east all together.  But until our country gets their shit together, this wont happen.  And I still believe in the constitution and the American revolution and the Idea of what America is supposed to be.  And guys like you and me will never be able to change the world if we turn a blind eye while these haters try to pull some shit ( no matter how justified their anger is)

It has been good to me in a lot of ways.  It has opened my mind to new places I would have never thought I would go.  I have seen a lot of life that most people never will.  I have received tons of benefits and also really found myself.  The military is not all bad bro, trust me.

And then snatch them up from the grips of death.  As according to the Geneva convention seeing as how I am a medic.

But all joking aside.  The military is not as crazy as a lot of you think.  It kind of makes me sad that so many people have these pre conceived notions of how it is to be in the military and how service members act and think.  I'm sure most of these opinions are based off horrible Hollywood depictions and disgruntled "veterans" who got kicked out of left after their first term because they couldn't handle it.  They're really are a lot of really intelligent and awesome people that I meet and serve with.  You can't explain what it's really like unless you experience it for yourself.  But I'm telling you, its not what most of you think.

Yeah just stay. Which I'm sure you were going to do anyway. My brother has been in the navy for 8 years, and he's leaving now cause they wouldnt let him go to belgium for 3yrs. He said once he put in his notice, everybody that were his friends before, are complete dicks to him now. Which I think is pretty fucked up. He's still gonna be in the reserves though. So stay..... if not for ur country, than for me.

I am trying to finantually set myself up to where I can get out at the end of my contract ( dec 2010 ) and not be a starving college student.  I have other ambitions in life.  But I do love a lot of things about this job.  So who knows.

It is truly a lost cause.

there are no rights.

no freedom.

no justice.

everything you stand for, the constitution, has been extinguished... we're entering a new era of post-oppression, the realization of "slavery".

shame. what a shame and a tragic joke.

what makes you such an expert on Afghanistan?  The majority of Afghans I met HATED the taliban.  But then again, it all depends on what ethnic group you talk to.  And a large majority of them really like America.  They know that we helped them with the Russians. And they see it as they helped us win the cold war ( which is true ) so they sort of see America and Afghanistan as a powerhouse team.  We got the money, they got the balls.  I'm not making this up.  Good people over there.  I was very well received.

Oh and the US isn't doing a whole hell of a lot to get rid of the heroin trade.  Hash neither.  But we do seem to be trying really hard for peace, commerce, and infrastructure .

The navy is alright.  I love my job, but I wouldn't want too many other jobs in the Navy.  I love working with the Marines, but I don't know if I could keep my sanity at a blue side navy command.  It all just depends what you are looking for.  I would recommend to someone who wants to join the military and do some real shit, to join the Marines.  But if you are just looking for a cushy military experience, the Air Force has everyone beat as far as quality of life goes.  The navy just goes on on ship for really long periods of time.  Working 12-15 hour days 7 days a week for months at a time.  Its hard work.
Title: Re: Should Variable...?
Post by: downtownpony on Jan 02, 2009, 05:00 AM
I currently do not want to join the military, but if I had to it would be the navy. It just seems the one that I would most identify with out of the others. That and Steven Segal.

The Navy is alright.  I just hate on them for certain reasons.  But if I stay in, they wont let me stay green side ( with the Marines ) forever.  So I will have to be one of those fat lazy navy cats that I hate on so much :( .

I was working in the medical field for two and a half years before I joined the Navy as an EMT I.  It was a good gig for an 18 year old.  But I don't know any more.  I still ponder the Idea of going to med school or PA school.  But I really want to go to law school.  We will see.

The pay ceiling in the Navy or medical field?  Because the medical pay is pretty dam good.  But really, the pay in the military is a lot better than most people think.  You have to factor in all the benefits and special pays we get.  If you look up the pay chats, that is the minimum we get.  I get paid a lot more than what those pay charts say + benefits

The pay ceiling in the Navy or medical field?  Because the medical pay is pretty dam good.  But really, the pay in the military is a lot better than most people think.  You have to factor in all the benefits and special pays we get.  If you look up the pay chats, that is the minimum we get.  I get paid a lot more than what those pay charts say + benefits

i meant the medical field (depending on what you do), for instance i am a medical technologist (lab person) and unless i go back to school (PA, Masters) i can only hope to make maybe 60-70 grand tops. The pay is good, i was just talking about the ceiling, you wont make much more than what you start at (i.e. that 60-70 is only after a long career, though i started at 45; a 35 grand increase over a lifetime of work is nothing) which is true for the entire medical field

Are you planning on staying in the medical field once your time in the Navy is complete?
I was working in the medical field for two and a half years before I joined the Navy as an EMT I.  It was a good gig for an 18 year old.  But I don't know any more.  I still ponder the Idea of going to med school or PA school.  But I really want to go to law school.  We will see.

Good luck whatever you do, from the chats with ya I'm sure you'll find what you love and jump right in head first.

Yeah but that's a lot of jobs. I know what you mean though.  Last I checked in Albuquerque ( about 3 years ago ) Paramedics capped out at $18.00 an hour.  And it was really hard to get past that.  Maybe 21 after a stupid amount of time.  And nurses pretty much right around $50.00 after a few years experience.  But like you said, theres always Nurse practitioner and PA programs.  Becoming a firefighter for paramedics is also a good way to help.  The medical field has a lot of options in my opinion.  Especially for Navy Corpsmen like myself.  Holy shit man.  There are something like 70 c schools I could go to.  Its crazy.  I would hate working in the Lab though.  More power to you.

But if I stay in the medical field, I will more than likely stay in the Military.  I like the military.  Its a good lifestyle.  I get to move around a lot and  Do a lot of crazy shit.  I get exposed to so many different people and situations.  I don't know, its just cool.  I like living a life that challenges me.  So I don't see me getting out, and doing the same job in the civilian world.  I would lose a lot of stability, my retirement, shit tons of benefits, and a lifestyle I enjoy.  The only way I see getting out, is if I chose another career path.  Such as law school.  I want to study economics for my bachelors and then go to law school to study constitutional law.  So, we shall see.

Head first indeed.  Hopefully its not shallow water!  But thanks man.  I still got a couple years to figure it out.  But hopefully the choice comes easy and I do figure it out.

What are you up to these days man?  Its been so long since I have really talked to you, I kinda forget what you got going on.

Thanks for asking...

I was working for a company based out of N.Y./N.J. - they hired me to work @ Microsoft since I live so close, it was going well but when the ecomony took a shit I was laid off. So currently I'm living off unemployment and playing guitar and Halo 3. Most bored I've ever been... I need to find more hobbies or a job soon.

Probably not the right man to be talking to bud.  But it will get better eventually.  The stability of the military is pretty nice right about now.

Yeah, thanks to all the fucking money I give to the federal government... They take 28% of my paycheck. BULLSHIT! I hate this country... Sometimes.
