Dude! thank you thank you!! thats such an amazing thing to hear! this is actually only my second oil painting ive ever done hehe... i went through the talented art programs growing up but i never gave much of two shits... i liked art, but not the process of doing it. so this is the first time ive done anything of this size and concept. i spent about 24 hours on it altogether, with only an angle brush but im happy with it, and glad to hear the positive response, the work is paid off :)
and im definitely going to pursue a showing, i figure in another two or three months ill have a pretty solid body of work...
i feel much happier and content with my life now that im creating, and i hope to share more with you all as i go along!

I'll go along with Theis, you really have the talent for this.
I believe some more time and you will be able to make money from your art :)

Title: Re: My Paintings

are you talking about the background? if so its just multiple layering over a few days, i really like the effect. the oils im using right now are fine quality and have a high sheen from the mmineral spirits within the oils so it has some reflection from the camera, and its fresh paint... but man, it def has to be seen in person, this painting took me about 65 hours and there is some incredible detail in there!

and some great news guys!! I have been offered to paint live at voodoo fest here in new orleans on halloween weekend! theyre paying me some moolah, and free wristbands for friends and family and i get to speak on the radio about my work. i will be hosting older pieces as well as working on new ones upcoming for the show spot. and will be painting a mural live while the music rolls. its probably the greatest exposure i can have as an artist right now, thousands of people will be passing by to watch me paint, and i will prob be somewhat nerve-racked as well... but much joy to come i will keep you all posted :) :) :)

dude i saw that in the picture thread and was gonna tell you that you should totally do artwork for bands, I can see you pulling off one of the sweetest album covers I've ever seen.

mad props on EVERYTHING i've seen in here, a lot of time i feel like the surrealist-ish (i could be wrong with applying that tag to your work, i don't really know art too well) paintings i see are kinda uninspired, at least to me, but your work is totally something else.  It's hard to describe.

Where do you get the specific inspiration for your art?  For instance that painting "Dis(ciple)guise; A Grand Peace Illusion -Under a Banner of Providence," did you just picture that in your head from the beginning and paint it?  Or was it more like you just started somewhere and saw where it took you?

man! first off, thank you for your kind words! i really appreciate it. its everything to me.

you can say its surreal art. ive always been a fan of the "internal landscape". i often take from fantastic realism. very similar. though im not to big on genre dropping.

my inspirations are a constant and hyper to say the least. in many ways i have been overwhelmed throghout my life with what i relate to as my "visions". they are exemplified in both my visual art, and my writing, and even the whimsical noodling on my guitar.
whenever i have a vision, or some internal revelation it usually goes straight into my notebook/sketchpad which i ALWAYS keep with me, -as a short poem along with a thumbnail sketch. i actually draw alot of inspiration/vision from when i am jogging... i zone ot and everything just opens up.
for this particular piece "dis(ciple)guise....." which is for the band hat talk there is somewhat of a story. first off, the band is conceptually based off of mormon culture; the superstition, fundamentalism, and historical eccentricity of its founder and followers. we all know a little about joseph smith!? even south park made that hilarious episode about him! "dumb dumb dumb dumb DUMB!"
and so by the advice of one of the bandmates i have been reading "under the banner of heaven" a meditation on mormon history by the writer Jon Krakauer. this book has given me the substantial jist of historical accuracies and inaccuracies of mormon practice, hype, and its following, and the atrocities related to it. this painting takes from what is dubbed as the "mountain meadows massacre", -where mormons "disguised" as indians by painting their faces, ambushed a wagon train crossing utah, and what became a five day siege with the families from arkansas (consisting of 150 people!). after the days wore on the mormons adopted to procure a truce and approached the downtrodden wagon assembly (who had already lost loved ones now rotting in the sun around them) under the white flag of truce, to only capture them as soon as the relinquished their arms and kill all men women and children in the most brutal fashion. they only let some dozen children (specifically under 3 years old) survive. for they would presumealy not remember the event. they captured those children and raised them as mormons. the bodies were left untouched for quite some time (around a year) and after the US government had been made aware they built a memorial shrine which was later destroyed by the mormon prophet and leader, and successor to joesph smith himself brigham young.

there is much much more to the event of course and its legacy.

but the visual representation/inspiration in the painting is entirely mine :)

hopefully one day you can see them! and i can personally hand it over to you! :)

I can't say it enough man, you're really talented and I'm so jealous of your situation right now. over the last few months I've been thinking a lot about my job and what do in the future and I've come to the conclusion that I really need to find something that let's me have a lot of free hours and not tie me down to a chair in an office 8 hours every day. I've always been a creative person and all I want to do is paint and make music. how the hell I'm going to achieve that is beyond me unfortunately. fortunately money has never been very important to me, as long as I can eat alright and sleep in a bed...

i dont know your situation. but im sure there is some way. i mean, i havent always been so fortunate. ill spare the pitiful tale of woes, but honestly sometimes im not sure how im still alive. but it makes me what i am. and my drive stems from it. as long as you remain relentless in your pursuit of passion, that kenetic momentum will eventually take hold, and oppurtunities will follow, i believe it.
im rooting for you man! i know what it means to creative people like you, or me, or anyone else, its a constat struggle sometimes because maybe not living up to that passion per say.. so make your will and indomitable one!

I'm not actually sure. The dream was really chaotic, but I'm sure I dreamt of you.
I remember some sort of a labyrinth with lots of people and random stuff going on in it, psychedelic stuff, lots of people laughing, partying, tripping and stuff like that, and I just remember  you were in one of the rooms, and both you and I were really happy to meet (like on drugs, lol), one more detail I remember is that you had a really colorful headband. that's pretty much it.

weird, considering the fact that most probably I'll never meet you in real life :)

You should make me a tattoo!!  :P

I'm wanting two koi...one representing my son and one my daughter. From what I know, blue and or white represents son and pink and or red represents daughter.  I like this design

but wanted something more personal and original. I'm not sure about the size yet either...not sure if I want it on my foot, back or shoulder/arm. I'm sure I can find someone around here to draw one up,but just wanted to see if you could come up with anything.

it was a part of a generally chaotic dream - we were walking in your gallery and you were showing me enormous pictures you've drawn, something really surrealistic. I remember that everything you say would be voiceless and would just appear in front of my in a form of free text. cool!

Post by: lostpilot on Jan 13, 2010, 09:48 PM
oh, those kids, misinterpreting the reality!

artwork: the general idea of the album (cause the title does not really reveal anything at all):
there is a nameless persona, which finds himself in a (open interpretation) dream/delusion/drug-trip/withdrawal/whatever-else. the delusion - one  finds himself in an endless desert (yeah, I know, a  cliche used for a million times, I still love it), without a map, without any idea where he is.

so, one starts to wonder around and encounters various things in the desert - the floating mountains, a city made of tall pillars with fields of beehives behind and so on. in this journey one is suffering severe thirst (though he visits oases to replenish), which equals dying, vanishing, depersonalization. In the end, when the thirst finally "kills" (open interpretation) the protagonist, he has a major delusional outbreak and later wakes up to find a giant Pluto above him, to which he travels by spirit.

So, when one travels to Pluto he is once again stuck in the desert, just a different one, made of raw metal and chemicals; and in the end (as the protagonist is dying/fading_away_from_the_dream/etc, stuck in the Pluto, so after some time and dramatic music (lol), one just decides to "abandon his skull". The listener is somewhat able to choose which skull does he abandon - the "real" one (delusional sick person = death and staying in Pluto) or the "deserted" one (killing the dream/delusion/etc = waking up).

So, that's pretty much it. The title, Constellations, does not really have much to do with the "plot" of the album.. yeah.

Tracklist for some ideas etc:

0. Constellations
1. Fifty-One Seconds Above My Head
2. One Giant Leap Towards the Desert
3. Hope
4. Other Ghosts Below the Sailing Sun
5. The Floating Mountains
6. Oasis: Mist Above the Sky
7. Bumblebee, Stuck in the Shadow of August
8. Thirst of a Thousand, Drought of the One
9. Oasis: Sylphlike Creatures
10. Drones and Pillars
11. Beehives
12. Measured Beat of the Heat Waves
13. Giant Pluto Above Me
14. Oasis: Cosmic Waves
15. The Sharp Craters and Reefs of Pluto
16. Inject the Remedy, Save Him!
17. Deserted Skulls

When I thought about the cover/etc, I was thinking about some desert-ish surrealist themes..

these are some really great ideas!

ive already gathered some visualization. hmmm. im actually about to start two new paintings right now and one of them reminds me of these visuals you speak of.

this one has been changed concerning the figure. i turned his head towards the viewer with a big grin on his face similar to the painting i just finished. what do you think about this? of course it wouldnt be the same thing. i can add and subtract things and positions. i can add a planet above? put the figure on his back, or floating upwards.?

ill do some sketches and post them here and you can direct me from there is that cool?
Title: Re: My Paintings
Post by: lostpilot on Jan 14, 2010, 12:05 AM
it's really cool to work this way!

a) I do not want to suppress your artistic ideas, so for now I'll just be observing your ideas
b) it kinda sucks that I do not have the full album recorded already, I think it would be somewhat good for you to hear the music you're visualizing - so as soon as I get some more tracks done, I will inform you with downloads etc
c) I'd like you to do some more small pieces (well, preferably, it will take a bit less time for you to produce, I suppose) for the inlay, backside etc. To fill in the gaps.. and personally I believe it'd be grand if you could picture some of the things protagonist encounters (though the idea of Pluto being somewhere on the cover is a must :) ), major standouts in my head are The Floating Mountains, Other Ghosts Below the Sailing Sun, the Pillar City and a skull in a desert (also as an idea for the cover itself)..

It's awesome I have someone to visualize my music. Cool!

I just wanted to point out that this seeing how you guys sculpt a conceptual album is entertaining to me. Ohhh, and I love that tree with the double-rooted thing. Starts with the roots...so it ends. I guess there is quite a couple of good metaphors on that image alone. Anyway the first painting darius quoted is quite haunting, makes me remember about a friend of mine.

can't wait to see the final results!

just a quick question, btw. I'm sure you've answered this before, but I can't recall - have you had any education or are you entirely self-taught?
Title: Re: My Paintings
Post by: wither-I on Jan 23, 2010, 04:23 PM
i was in the talented art programs through high school, where i got some good knowledge writing essays :)

i did one measley painting in high school using acrylics. it is also unfinished.

but as far as a "higher learning" and "training" i am without...
ive always just been a "doodler" drawing in my notebooks during class, never had the patience for anything conceptual to finish!

sadly enough, i had a mantra against color. i thought i was cool because my world and my drawings were all black and white..

this past may of 2009 i decided upon using oil paints. i had never used them before. in high school they were too expensive and also considered to difficult and left for use in college...
and so i discovered...

the first painting i have ever really done/finished is the one i posted on the first page "ruin of ages" with the figure holding her hands up glaring into the sky. and since, ive been helplessly obsessed :)

on another note i could prob use some formal training with oil paints. but its hard to find the time when im actually producing.

and with each one i get a better handle of what im doing both technically and conceptually.
i kind of pride myself in being self-taught. i do alot of trial and error. lots of sketching. lots of research. lots of PRACTICE. i feel as though im still at a trial stage. but soon i will break forth...
i want to make this my life and i will stop at the nothing to achieve great heights. its only a matter of time now...

I love your dedication and belief in yourself. I wish I had the same motivation. getting there though!

but yeah, you should pride yourself in being self-taught. of course there are many techniques to be learned in everything from sketches to oilpainting, but it's important not to lose your personal touch.

hey hello again, Whiter- I
i was wondering what kind of material you use to paint on, do u use canvas or wood? cause i've done some paints on my own and after seeing yours i felt like i wanna give it another try,( so thanks for that men) but canvas and oils are little expensive and i dont how to prepare it or there some other material?
if u can help me out i wil really apreciate it men¡¡, later..

right now im using "williamsburg" oil paints. and i have already prepared canvases that i purchase. ive got a great hookup at the art supply store here and i get stuff real cheap.

i tried acrylic paints twice before but years ago and it turned me off from painting big time. i just didnt like the movement.
i got a wild hair to go with oils. and im addicted :)

there's a picasso quote about how the worst thing an artist can do is to go to art school because everything you have taught yourself gets stripped and replaced with the rigid ideals and techniques of painting of the institution, or something like that.

i've done painting and drawing. you're better off going to random workshop kind of classes. although nothing is as amazing as sitting and learning the theory of art itself by an exceptional lecturer.

you have your own style and technique, it's really individualistic. the only thing you can do is hone it and better your art. i would love to see you make work on alternative types of paper.
Title: Re: My Paintings
Post by: wither-I on Jan 30, 2010, 05:05 PM
thanks blixa its good to hear it coming from you!

have you seen picasso's paintings from when he was 14 and 15 years old. talk about rigid realism. but they are really amazing too.

i myself am trying to exact a vision of both technical, conceptual, and a more abstracted/surreal prowess. im a big admirer of visionary painting, fantastic and dreamy. i still have a ways to go in exacting my true vision, just patience now.

on working with other mediums and stables,
right now im absolutely in love with the movement i get using oils on canvas. such fluidity! such control!
however im going to be using a "clayboard" in the near future, AND also some wood. im so busy right now with other ideas/projects!

aside from the 2 dimensional, i loooooong for sculpture. i did more sculpture growing up than anything else (besides drawing).
we built our own kiln in highschool out of a mound of clay/mud behind the school. we mortared bricks to fashion an igloo type entrance and encasing. it took us a year to build and was a great project in itself. functioning very well. enough of that. there are many things i aspire to do as far as installation, theatre, writing, film, music among other avenues. writing is very imporatant to me and im working on both a children's book idea and also a concept novel which i dream of turning into a play. film has always been a dream. the first time i wrote anything, when i was a kid, was to get grasp a movie plot/sequence i had churning in my head...

and so much more...

i think ive said alot of these things already haha

i went to art school to study photography. i don't regret going because i did learn a lot but i made sure that my style was developed and not replaced by something that i thought would get me better marks or make me more successful. i was encouraged like you wouldn't believe though. a lot of lecturers are really "you gotta strike out on your own" type of people so i never felt stifled by being there. there are pro's and cons to going. i got to explore all types of mediums before choosing what i wanted to focus on.

and i came from a performance art background where it was loud and abrasive and you almost humiliated and tortured yourself for it all and then i ended up being a photography student where the work i'm doing is so calm and the exact opposite of my performances.

if you do go to art school, you have to make sure you pick a school that will suit you, and sometimes that doesn't necessarily mean it's the most prestigious school. those labels are bullshit.

i went to college for about four years. i have about a year left. going back is the last thing i want to do. i think about it and cringe...

but anywho,

to darius and "blixa";

did you receive my personal messages?

i got your message, and the answer is yes.

i would be put off about going to university if i was living in america because it's just ridiculous how much it costs. in australia, we have hecs so i've pretty much got it all worked out: i have to have a low paying job for the rest of my life so i don't have to pay my hecs debt back ahahaha.

i might get back to performance art because i think i can make some money from it.

yeah its a tad bit pricey. i actually have a legislative scholarship for anywhere in the state of louisiana because my dad was a firefighter in new orleans.
college drove me nuts though. so much anxiety, i started losing my head and seeing bad things. so i stopped for the sake of my health honestly....

you seem to have alot going for you creatively speaking, blixa, so i encourage and support your wildest dreams. godspeed
Title: Re: My Paintings
Post by: blixa on Feb 01, 2010, 08:40 AM
you lost it because of university? you're a bit good will hunting, aren't you? hahaha i love that. all i got was stress because i had a part time job that felt like a full time job and had to stay back late and show up early  for class to do most of my work, but it worked out. you just have to learn to not stress so much, a lot of it is out of your hands and you have to do the best you can and when the lecturers see that they will give you some leeway.

i haven't been doing much since uni finished. that's why i thought moving to melbourne might help me because it is so creatively charged. all the artists are there, but then i hate most artists. they're such wankers.
Title: Re: My Paintings
Post by: wither-I on Feb 01, 2010, 04:23 PM
yeah everyone is different. college/uni whatever ran through some ugly times in life. i can really only do/take so much stress. my glass is already full. i start spilling everywhere.

and i agree just the term "artist" drives me mad. i hear it and want to knife myself in the gullet. i dont want to be that. i want to destroy it savage

I'm not rushing things, just, you know, have to know if there's any progress.

I am rethinking my previous statement of making your art as the cover of the album, cause I have found some stunning pictures I really like for the _cover_, but every other piece of inlay etc will be yours - of course, if I like what you've done there. though, I don't know, if you'll blow my mind away, maybe you'll still be up for full exposure, lol

well, you know that your art is ALWAYS welcome with me. I won't be releasing the album still for a couple of months, or at least a month (cause it's taking me a LOT of time and effort this time,  to make things right, you know, perfectionism), so if you still have time, I'd love to share your art with my listeners.

there's a picasso quote about how the worst thing an artist can do is to go to art school because everything you have taught yourself gets stripped and replaced with the rigid ideals and techniques of painting of the institution, or something like that.

i've done painting and drawing. you're better off going to random workshop kind of classes. although nothing is as amazing as sitting and learning the theory of art itself by an exceptional lecturer.

you have your own style and technique, it's really individualistic. the only thing you can do is hone it and better your art. i would love to see you make work on alternative types of paper.

i totally agree with that quote. high school art class killed my desire to make art a career. way to many rules and restictions. it didn't feel like a creative output. anymore i just doodle. i never really like painting though. i was always prefered pencil or pen/ink.
hm.. i guess you had a completely wrong type of teachers.
i have attended High School of Applied Arts and now I'm attending Academy of Applied Arts, and during all these years none of the teachers ever said anything among the lines of "You can't do it like that, you have to do it like this." of course, when it came to Drawing Anatomy class, body ratio was important, but other than that, we were/are completely free to express ourselves in absolutely any style we want to.
so yeah. i don't agree with you on that. if i didn't go to art school (and now to the Academy), i probably wouldn't even have time for expressing myself creatively. i'd probably just spend my days studying and nothing more.

as for your artwork, i've just spent an hour browsing this topic from start, and i have to say - your progress is stunning! i particularly love the last one you've posted ("the birth and flux of a tectonic universe"), simply amazing.

it all depends on what institute you go to. i remember last year that a lecturer of mine completely changed my friend's direction on her work and it wasn't for the better. my friend really disliked the way she was directed to go about making her work.

like i said, it all depends on where you go. some lecturers are crap and feed your ears horse poop. i know that a lot of the artists i admire had no formal art education. that said, i think there are pros and cons to going to art school. that is a decision you have to make.

like i said, it all depends on where you go. some lecturers are crap and feed your ears horse poop. i know that a lot of the artists i admire had no formal art education. that said, i think there are pros and cons to going to art school. that is a decision you have to make.
well, as for us here, of course some teachers sometimes want you to go in another direction. but it's not that you have to go there. he/she gives you an option, and it's entirely up to you if you want it or not.

as for your last paragraph, i completely agree on that. there are pros and cons to everything.

definitely, but when you have a vulnerable person who's still grappling with the style of their work, they tend to do whatever they are told because their lecturer knows better. you have to be a strong student and person to develope your style with the aid (not interference) of your teachers.

i know my work was so very different before i went to university. i was doing very violent, abrasive performance work and once i entered into my photography degree, i incorporated the quiet magnitude of my personality and character into my work. i never thought i would be making work described as "austere." you grow into your style at some point and that can be aided by your lecturers or your friends who don't necessarily have to be artists also.

"severance on the shores of shared memory"
oil on canvas
(48X60)

There are no words when transcending this world. I deeply consider the paintings I render to be not of my own, but rather a possession of the many folds and fractals of a particulate and simultaneously "whole" universe. If not for all the great minds and forms before me which "lived" and thrived, and the visual and supra-natural elements of an ever-evolving contemporary landscape in our perceived reality, I could never achieve the creative compositions in which i forfeit (via paintbrush) to the world -at view. The image is the focus, the eternal gaze in hopes of transcendence from one medium of expression, to the next. I can only "work" automatic, subconscious, and emotional. I let the paintings evolve for themselves: to tell tales or evoke emotions in which the greater ego of the universe would wish. Merely a "handpiece" and a spectator, I escape in the throes of "artmaking" as a voyeur of the most colorful and extreme intimacy of emotional discharge that the shared experience of the world has to offer, -from the seeds of life transpiring in open air to the inanimate consciousness of geological sediment bondings, to the patterns of abstract thought in the human mind.
