Title: Question about Deftones releases
Post by: BBfan on Apr 15, 2010, 09:54 AM
Okay, so unlike 99.9% of you, I'm not really a Deftones fan (BUT HEAR ME OUT!) but I've listened to "Diamond Eyes" and "Rocket Skates" and really dug the songs - so much that I think I would like to purchase the album when it comes out. So after listening to a few of their older tunes on youtube and enjoying them, I'd like to become a full-fledged fan.

So here's my question, as a noob to the Deftones sound (minus "Mein") which is the best album to start out with? I've heard a lot of people say White Pony is really good, should I start there? Or just go from the beginning and work my way up?

Sorry for the lame thread - I hate when people ask these kinds of questions haha.

First welcome to sharinglungs it's full of assholes and sarcasm. I say start from adrenaline and listen to them in release order all the way up to diamond eyes.

I second that suggestion. Starting from the beginning let's you experience the exponential growth that occurs from album to album. That being said, Adrenaline is far an away their rawest and greatest work in my mind. So start there and experience everything in order. I can't imagine only now hearing about Deftones....in a way, I envy what you're about to experience!

so you've been hanging around here for 2 years and you're not even a fan of the band?

I guess you're here for the leaks/download threads then?

The first Deftones album I listened to was SNW. I knew and loved Change for many years but I never really bothered to check the band out. Until I read a review somewhere that said SNW was their best album and way better than their previous, ST record. I was like "well suck my ass, a better album than the album Change is on? Gotta check it out."

And I really dug it. Next I listened to WP. I liked it even more. Then ATF. Which I didn't like that much but after a while I did. Then ST which blew me off my feet and still does. And lastly Adrenaline, which I liked but it was definitely a harder to get into.

I started with White Pony but managed to "understand" Adrenaline only after seeing them live - it depends on your tastes.

if you wanna buy an album i'd say ATF, cause it's on the verge of going platinum and it needs all the sales it can get, and it's arguably their best album

In order would be best. Try not to spread it out over a few days but like for real just sit down and listen listen listen. I've been a fan since "around the fur" and it's been awesome to grow with the band. You sir are in for a treat.  :)

anyways, start wherever you like. if you've listened to some of their older songs already you kinda know what sound to expect from each album. so just begin where you feel most comfortable.

Start from Adrenaline and work your way up. That's pretty much how we've had it, album after album, so it's better to do it like that. Each one is an evolution (not necessarily in quality).

Aye, I agree. It started with Adrenaline for me back in 96 so I only ever knew from one album to the next.

Only recommendation I can give really as it's a natural progression I guess.

Title: Re: Question about Deftones releases

Started with WP, then ATF, then Adrenaline. Then after a few years ST came out. To this day I have never really gotten into Adrenaline as much as the other records.

beastie boys?

anyway, i gotta be honest, i had WP and then S/T, and they got lost or stolen, i'm not sure which, and then when SNW came out, i repurchased those two then the rest, including b-sides.  start where ever you want but if you want to listen to the progression and regression and then progression again, i would listen from the first (adrenaline) to the latest release, diamond eyes, when it comes out of course.  ;)

Did they even end up using anything he did on that song? I don't even remember seeing his name in the album credits. I mean i remember hearing something about it but i don't think i even hear him on that song.

Chino said he sang under his vocals on the chorus. Hard to hear without headphones or what not

Indeed, there are two voices on RX Queen chorus.
Title: Re: Question about Deftones releases
Post by: Hidalgo on Apr 16, 2010, 12:49 AM
i think the story is Chino asked Scott Weiland to help him figure out some melodies to use for rx queen. i don't think weiland's voice is on the song, but maybe, it's way overpowered if it is

this would be something to ask Chino in an interview. i'm really thinkin weiland jusy helped with melody ideas, no vocals

I could be totally wrong as usual but I think that the second voice on RX Queen chorus is Weiland's.

I got a feeling it is. I'm sure I noticed it before, as bebo said, with headphones. I haven't listened to it in so long though. It's like a subtle layer underneath.

It's on there. lol. I just listened and realized it. lol.  ;D It's the lower harmony.
wikipedia also makes note of it.

yea, i don't quite trust wikipedia over the album sleeve and all i read over 10 years. but i guess it is possible. he's WAY in the background IF it's him. i certainly don't rule it out, but i still think he didn't do vocals

you gotta think, if his voice was on there they'd gladly credit him for it. plud they'd have to i think
Title: Re: Question about Deftones releases

Dude's weiland's vocals are on there. the part where it goes 'Cause your my girl' that's when weiland can be heard. You just gotta listen to it carefully. And he is credited in the white pony booklet if i remember correctly
Title: Re: Question about Deftones releases
Post by: Jacob on Apr 16, 2010, 01:37 AM
I really need to listen to that more carefully. I love Scott Weiland's voice and I find it hard to believe I have missed it on RX Queen. but then again, it's never been one of my favorites and one of the songs I've listened to the least from WP.

there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, I love it! but it has never been one of my favorites on WP.

anyways, just listened to it and call me crazy but I can definitely hear Scott on there. especially on the words "my girl".

Maybe you'd prefer a Chino quote?

RX Queen
"The most futuristic sounding song. Abe and I created the drum loop - its a crazy, bionic rhythm. I wrote a seedy guitar line over it, and worked with Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) on the vocals for the bridge. he came up with a really cool harmony for me to sing"

That tour was 2007 with The Fall of Troy, i believe.  I was the first chance I actually got to see them.  Don't ask why.  And other than getting kicked in the head a few times, I loved every minute of it.

same here dude, totally forgot about it, and he says a lot of things people are asking nowadays...

and as for the recommendation, as some here, i started with random songs (MOS, Change, BTS), and then got White Pony, ATF, S/T and Adrenaline, because by that time S/T was released
then got pumped by the bootlegs, and then SNW....... and you know the story
