Joking aside (i.e. the ''I'm feeling greedy'' comment), I'd be inclined not to share it out of respect for the people paying 5 or 6 times what I did. I have sent him a message yesterday asking him about the authenticity of the tape, I'm still waiting for his reply. Once I have it, I'll ask him about some other eventual material.
This points some interesting facts:
_The history about Mx being name after max ("Macks") and then pulling the A out of it is actually true.
_Mascara's first name was Lu Lu. If this would have stayed this way, then new metallica's would been named Mascara?
_Seing that the 14 tracks are the album songs + the 2 covers + Crenshaw, this discards the possibility of Bumble D being recorded for the album (or finished, but I think my guess is it wasn't even tried.)
_That doesn't mean that proper demos from the songs (and other ones, such as happened with SNW) exist. Still 1997 was a different time and I don't think both the mindset nor the resources of the band were in recording demos. Could be wrong, it's just speculation.
_Maverick was all over it, auditioning the deftones creativity before the album was handed.
_I want to clear what the content of this tape might mean:
"most songs are longer" = BQAD not having fade out. Actually none of them having artificial fade out and hearing the entire portion, such as feed back & so. It MIGHT have some parts that we haven't heard on the record.
"before mixing down"= not mixed that might mean from not EQ'ing & compressing to hear voice's unproccesed (distortionless & so), even an arrangment or effect that wasn't used, or things that were used and aren't heard on the demo tape. basically what I imagine is that this mix down was only leveling up the volume's instrument, if any more processing is there, then I don't know. It might, after all it was handed to Maverick, they would like to please the bosses as much as possible
Of course we're talking about unmastered tracks.
Hope this info is usefull, good luck with the bid, if the bid gets higher I'll probably contribute some cash to it.

I understand people are chipping in money and why should they have to give it away to someone who hasn't offered anything and just puts their hand out.
But honestly if you deny anyone who wants the tracks and is prepared to pay in, that's just wrong and as a Deftones fan you are a disgrace.
Everyone here loves Deftones and if they're willing to contribute should be able to get a copy.
Please don't use the bullshit excuse of there being too many people to co-ordinate - as I see it now you guys need all the money you can get or you risk losing out to someone elses bid.
I don't think you should just give it away to someone who hasn't put money in, that wouldn't be fair as you had to put in money, why should they get it for free.
The solution is to tell anyone who wants a copy to pay a certain amount to Oneloveforchi if they want a copy and to make a small contribution towards whoever it is that will rip and send them the copy.
This is the most decent and fair way as it wouldn't be right to deny someone to get involved in the first place, only to make a profit out of a fellow Deftones fan and sharing lungs board user.
Remember there is such a thing as karma and you wouldn't want someone keeping something from you later down the line.
There is no excuse to deny anyone who wants to get a copy and who wants to contribute.
If you are going to be unfair and deny other Deftones fans the chance to here their favourite band, I swear I will outbid you.

No one was trying to make a profit off of anyone. The plan was never to sell the tracks, and that hadn't been discussed until your post. On top of that, I was never involved in organizing this effort, so don't aim your frustrations at me--I simply paid my $20 when the opportunity came.
From what I understand, the reason a cap was put on the number of people contributing was to prevent the logistical nightmare of sending funds back and forth between people. So say 10 people wanted to contribute $50 as was originally discussed, and all of those 10 people sent their money to V. He would then have the opening bid. Enter disgruntled person 11, who wants to pay his $50 as well, and V allows it. Now he has to send ~$4.50 back to everyone who contributed. Enter person 12. You get the idea.
I think your OneLoveForChi idea is a good one personally, but this whole thing was organized on the fly and as expeditiously as possible as to prevent the potential possibility of missing out on the chance to get the tape at all. As someone who merely contributed a minimum amount to the initial pot, I don't really feel like the call on what to do with the tracks after they're ripped is mine to make. As I said before, I have to respect the wishes of the guys who paid 5 or 6 times what I did for it, as I couldn't have paid that much.
Considering you clearly weren't fully aware of the situation at hand, you might not have wanted to get as personal as you did with your post. I have an enormous amount of respect for people in general, and that respect of course extends to everyone in the Deftones community. I know your comments were made before you completely understood what happened to this point, so I won't take any offense to them. I'm sure either V or the guy who found the tape originally and is now the top contributor will take into consideration your OneLoveForChi idea, as it sounds like a smart solution to this mess. There was never any need for the personal defaming, and stuff like this always works out better when you come from a completely constructive place. Anywho, thanks for the suggestions.

As Matt said, this was organized really fast. And people allowed to chip in were not selected in any other way than following the first-come, first-served rule. If I were one of you guys, having missed out on this, I wouldn't have complained, life's life.
About not sharing the tracks, I'm not the one behind this idea. As you probably know, I share stuff on this board all the time. I wouldn't have minded, really, but some other people here just don't want those tracks to get freely given away when they paid their balls for it.

so.. if everyone who has paid money so far, is ok with changing the idea from "first come first served" to the oneloveforchi idea (really up to them),
this change isn't too late? vesanic bids for the 499, hopefully gets it, and then donate the rest of the money (now when more people pays)

I have seen many rare Deftones items up for sale from this dude over the years and he always starts them really high and as they go unsold, he lowers the price. When that would have happened, I probably would have paid him around $200 for this and I would distribute the tape freely to whoever the fuck wanted it as this tape is not taking any money away from the band. I also find it amusing that the guy paying $120 gets to keep the physical copy of the $500 tape. The whole thing is just kinda dumb to me.....person 1 gets the physical copy since he put down the most money. Person 2,3,4 and so on get a rip of it but they are all paying different prices. Just seems really stupid and person 1 gets away with a steal. I seriously am half tempted to just throw down a wad on this shit to own it myself and anyone who wants it can have a rip. I really don't have that much extra "fuck around money" at the moment but I may get a wild hair up my ass to just buy it.

I really doubt anyone else is gonna waste 500 dollars on a deftones demo tape especially if it isnt linus or something equally rare.

Why would the same not happen for this? I understand that those items were a hell of a lot cheaper than what he wants for the ATF demos, but who knows for sure? I never mentioned losing any items from him. You must have read my post wrong. I have seen him sell many Deftones items over the years and have him as a saved seller on eBay. If you're talking about those 2 singles I linked (sold by a different seller) that ended pretty low, then you're actually wrong about that as only a very small amount of those type of cassettes are made.

Hi - sorry I haven't returned your messages. I've been really sick & haven't been online for a few days. I used to work for Maverick & the head of sales gave the tape to me at a convention. There were only 12 & I'm guessing that this is one of the only ones remaining. This is one of the rarest pieces I know of & if you listen, you'll know it's the real thing.
I replied and asked him about the differences between these tracks and the tracks we know. I also asked him if he had any other Deftones material. Let's see what happens.

I KNOW for certain a demo version of Adrenaline exists, which I'd kill for. A friend of mine who worked at a different label had a copy, but couldnt find it for me.

its probably not going to sell for 500. no matter how rare, deftones stuff isnt worth THAT much sadly. the problem is, if you dont buy it at 500, and it never is put back up on ebay, you're fucked. this is truly one of those deals where you either lose or win, and anything in between is unlikely.
i should put up my rarities on ebay to help fund us to get a copy of this demo cassette ;)

Hi- The biggest difference is that most of the tracks are played continuously - there aren't any breaks between the songs. There's a lot of stuff that just didn't make it onto the final record, and that's why these recordings are called 'rough cuts', because these tracks eventually get trimmed down and polished for the final release version.

I don't agree. 15 minutes is a big deal to one of the best records ever made. Think about it, wouldn't you want 15 extra minutes to a Beatles record if possible?
Like I said, I'm down for 50 dollars. All of us easily will spend 50 dollars just on one nights worth of alcohol, so why not this? The difference between the rough cut and final mix are probably very faint, but having both is something very few people have the opportunity to have access to. It's not worth 500 dollars in regards to 'rarity' - but it is if we get new versions of the songs that sound different.

It's not a fair example to compare Deftones's popularity to Muse's, you know. I get your idea but this kind of effort would require a massiveness & momentum that this cause just can't have (in my opinion, of course).

Keep that in mind: 500 is the starting bid and it's still on for 5 days... I'm not SURE that we'll be able to win it.
I'm confused.
There is no such thing as a studio pre mix MASTER cassette tape. There can be tracked reel to reels, unmastered.
If this is the case, then a person with high end studio equipment should get it, at least for a while to mix it down and master it.
I have this gear and the ability to do it and I don't mind matching his payout, then sending the originals to him when I am done with the mixdown. But this needs to be legit.
He probably just means it's an original copy and not a further generation, like VHS tapes?
Maybe we'll finally get to hear this for the 20th anniversary. ;) ;)
