Title: gear
Post by: mothraw on Jul 25, 2012, 02:44 PM
i couldn`t find a gear thread and nobody answered my request so here it is.
i think this could be interesting for some of us.maybe more looks into deftones music than into clothes, goaties and stiff pussies full of sand to rub on.

Chino Moreno Pedalboard 2010

During their 2010 tour supporting "Diamond Eyes," Chino Moreno strapped on and played the most guitar he's played live as the band's front man. To get a ferocious yet melodically balanced sound that meshes with Stephen Carpenter's signature tone, Moreno's signal chain included an Ernie Ball 6181 Junior Volume Pedal, a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive, a MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay, a MXR Micro Chorus, a MXR Phase 45, a TC Electronic Polytune, which all went into a custom Green Matamp. And the whole board is powered by a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus power supply.

Stephen Carpenter Pedalboard 2010

Stephen Carpenter used this board for the Deftones' 2010 tour in support of "Diamond Eyes." The board had been built recently by Bob Bradshaw of Custom Audio Electronics. Carpenter says he mostly uses the effects live, versus a simpler setup in the studio, to add an extra dimension and fun. On the board is an MXR Carbon Copy delay, CAE Boost/Line Driver, MXR Blue Box, MXR EVH Phase 90, MXR Micro Chorus, Z.Vex Ringtone, Z.Vex Lo-Fi Loop Junky, MXR Smart Gate, MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, TC Electronic PolyTune, ProTone Christian Olde Wolbers Signature Pre Amp, MXR EVH Flanger, Z.Vex SeekWah, Z.Vex Machine, and Z.Vex Fuzz Factory. Not pictured is a CAE controller for all of the effects, DigiTech Whammy, and volume pedal.

Stef ditched the Marshall and Guitar Rig stuff. He used Fractal Fx2 for the new album. This basically drives right into the soundboard,  so now on stage you'll see he just has four speakers angled around him to give feedback since he doesn't wear an ear piece.

Hey guys, thought I'd post this up to give anyone interested a thorough run down of the gear the guys are using as of 2012. This is the result of research I have done. I'm not sure if I am 100% up to date, but I am always on looking for info on their gear. First up, here is Stephen's gear!

Stef:

Stef currently uses 4 different model signature ESP Guitars live: SRC-7 model, Stef T-7 model, Stef B-7 model and the Stef B-8 model.
Stef currently plays in 5 tunings: Standard E, Drop C#, Drop C, Drop G and Drop F#. He takes 12 guitars on tour - a main for each tuning, and a backup in case he breaks a string.

Stef originally used his signature ESP 6 strings on the first 3 albums. Then for S/T he switched to the SRC-7 and B-7. For Diamond Eyes and the new album he used his B-8's as well as some new custom 8-string ESP Telecasters, similar to his T-7 model.

Do we know which guitars were used for what album ?

Thats kind of tricky to answer, 'cause if you check out the B-sides & Rareties DVD you can see that Stef plays Battle-axe on a 6-String Viper LTD/ESP guitar. However...

I remember reading somewhere that he began playing Jackson guitars with Floyd Rose bridge (I think Like Linus was recorded with that guitar), then ESP gave him... or maybe he bought it who knows... a Page Hamilton (Helmet) signature model (An ESP Horizon with Floyd Rose bridge... you can see it on the 7 words music video) but he had problems with the floating bridge system 'cause if one string breaks the whole guitar goes out of tune and he had to stop the songs during live shows to get a back up guitar 'cause he was the only guitarist on the band at that time.

Then he switched to a fixed bridge version of the Horizon model with customized controls (Bored music video) And during the Around the fur Era he moved the pickup selector to its "signature" location right below the bridge and that's how he got his "signature model" i guess.

That configuration remained unchanged until The Selftitled Era when he began to use Baritone 7 strings guitars (28" fingerboard scale) and he replaced all of his 6 strings with regular scale 7 strings guitar (25.5").

During the Saturday Night Wrist Era Stef got his 7 Strings Telecaster Baritone guitar, it was down tuned to basically match the low end sound of an 8 strings guitar.

Few years later he began to use 8 strings guitars and Eros was being recorded with that. Then Diamond Eyes surfaced and "apparently"  for the first time in Deftones history he used the same guitar tuning from the previous album.

We have to wait until the new album comes out and see (or hear) if he didnt down tuned his 8 strings guitar for this new album. Although there are pictures of Stef with an 8 strings telecaster im not sure if he used that guitar on the new album but he got a new set of pickups for his signature B8... and thats all i can say about that.

PS. I guess im a guitar geek.  ;D

I'm pretty sure these are the tunings Stef used. I know that the first 3 albums are definitely what I have put below.

Adrenaline - Standard E
Around The Fur - Drop C#
White Pony - Drop C
Self Titled - Drop G#
Saturday Night Wrist - Drop F# (on a 7-String)
Diamond Eyes - Drop F#

Chino:

Guitars:

As of 2012, Chino is using 4 guitars live. Two Gibson SG Standards, a Gibson 1961 SG and a Fender Jaguar. In the past he has used Fender Stratocaster's and Mustang's, as well as some ESP and Yamaha guitars.

Amplifiers & Cabinets:

- x1 Orange 4x12 Cabinet
- x1 Orange Dual Terror 30 watt Amplifier

Effects:

- Boss DD-6 Digital Delay
- Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble
- Electro Harmonix Memory Toy
- Dunlop MXR Carbon Copy
- TC Electronics PolyTune Tuner
- Voodoo Labs Pedal-Power 2 Plus

Sergio:

Basses:

Sergio is pretty boring with his basses. All of his touring basses are the exact same model and finish. He uses Fender Jaguar's in 3-Tone Sunburst. I beleive he takes 6 basses out on the road.

Amplifiers & Cabinets:

- x2 Fractal Audio Axe-Fx II
- x1 Fractal Audio MFC-101 MIDI foot controller
- x1 Rocktron Velocity 300 150w Power Amplifier
- x2 Furman M-8x2 Power Conditioners
- x4 Ernie Ball Expression Pedals
- x2 Orange White OBC810 8x10 Cabinets

Do you have guitars's history of Chino ?

And what about the tunings of Chino and Stef on each album ?

Mr. bojosoto explained everything pretty much. BUT!

Chino began to play guitar on White Pony, Im not sure but i think his first guitar was the red ESP/LTD Viper that he played on White Pony Release Party show (probably because of Stef's ESP/LTD endorsement) later he got his famous red Gibson SG and he never went back to his Viper... probably kept it as a back up guitar. On this album Chino and Stef used Drop C tunings.

During the Selftitled Era Chino used Drop C# (or Drop Db if want) and Stef Standard G#, Chino got more guitars, if you watch the Rareties DVD you can see 5 guitars on his Rack (the red LTD Viper, a Sunburst Telecaster, a Green Gibson SG and 2 others i cant identify) but kept the red SG as his main guitar and he used it for all S/T songs. Also you can see another Gibson SG with natural mate finish when they performed at the Wembley Arena in London, it was used for songs from the White Pony album (He threw that guitar at the end of that show). And another White SG used on some live shows (MTV icon The Cure, live at Good Call)

For Saturday Night Wrist things changed again, Stef used Drop F# and Chino used Drop D (and apparently Drop D# on a few songs.. like beware) and he got more guitars, his main guitars for SNW were a natural gloss/orange Fender Stratocaster with a white pickguard but painted black... you can see the black paint wearing off (Hole in the earth live on Conan) and a couple of sunburst Fender Jaguars used for pretty much all White Pony/Sefltitled songs.

For Eros, im not sure but i think Chino was using a white Telecaster, about tunings... after further investigation i think Stef used Drop E on his 8 strings  'cause there is a clip of him jamming with Chi and Abe (Eros Clip 3) where his guitar has a super fat low end sound only achieved with that tuning (tested on guitar pro)... but who knows.

During Diamond Eyes era, Chino went back to his Gibson SG using different tunings (Drop D and Drop C), Stef used Standard F#. And guess what... Chino got more guitars, the briefly used Eastwood semihollow and another Gibson SG but this time black.

For the new album there is a pictures of a Red fender Telecaster and a new fender jaguar (i think it was a special baritone series)... i cant remember the color but i think it was black. The tunings, im not sure about that either but somebody said that Chino was using a special tuning, a combination of standard c# with the lower string dropped to A.

Nice chronology of their guitar history... Everything seems correct.. For the new album though Chino is tuning his guitar for Rosemary to Drop C pretty much, but dropping the bottom C down to an A#.. Very strange tuning but i'm interested for sure

In 2010 and 2011, the band went through quite a few changed with their guitar and bass rigs. I think it had a lot to do with Drew Foppe their guitar tech at the time. He got both Chino and Sergio onto Orange Amps. In a video on YouTube, Bush guitarist Chris Traynor talks about how he is best friends with Sergio, and got him on to the Axe-Fx units. Stef followed, and now that's what they both solely use for tones and effects.

Stef has pretty much used the same guitars for many years now, but Chino is always switching things up.

We recently purchased Axe-Fx units and as you know, it is a transcendental experience... especially for those who love developing tones with movement and textures to use for composition as we do. We feel as though we found a life partner in this system!

It's kind of complicated but easy to figure out if you watch live performances. I'm 100% sure about everything I listed here, but  there is something missing of course.

Adrenaline: E  A  D  G  B  E
Around The Fur: C# G# C# F# A# D#
White Pony: C  G  C  F  A  D
Deftones: G# C# F# B  E  G# C#
Saturday Night Wrist: F# C# F# B  E  G# C#
Diamond Eyes: F# B  E  A  D  G  B  E

Exceptions and other songs:

Teething: E  A  D  G  B  E
Night Boat: E  A  D  G  B  E
The Chauffeur: E  A  D  G  B  E
Mascara: D# G# C# F# A# D#
Dai The Flu: D# G# C# F# A# D#
Can't Even Breathe: C# G# C# F# A# D#
Crenshaw: C# G# C# F# A# D#
To Have And To Hold: C  G  C  F  A  D
The Boy's Republic: C  G  C  F  A  D
Back To School (Mini Maggit): C  G  C  F  A  D
Beware: G# C# F# B  E  G# C#

Stef uses Dunlop Tortex 1,0 mm Picks since forever.

He used Fender strings up until the self-titled era and switched to Ernie Ball for Saturday Night Wrist. When he got his 8-string, he started using Dunlop strings.

String gauges: .069 .059 .049 .039 .028 .018 .014 .011

edit: If someone knows the tunings of other songs please post them!

Very detailed man. Just remember that since Stef switched to 7-Strings after White Pony, in the writing process of S/T, he has the extra string on all of the 7's. So the Adrenaline tuning is - E  A  D  G  B  E  E, ATF - C# G# C# F# A# D#  D#, etc etc.

It's still amazes me that Adrenaline was recorded in standard tuning. That album is so heavy.

i know chino used a ltd 301 viper and a esp standard viper,
and has at least two electric green amps.
i think he started using orange w/ team sleep, i dont want to believe its a dual terror hes using now.
also, stef used a sg as backup guitar in the early days along with hughes kettner amps.
i remember he had a few zvex pedals around snw era, i think he combined the ff + machine
Chino Used a VOX AC30 for awhile with team sleep it was right after he switched from the Green
Chino Moreno of Team Sleep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_AwyhuNBDw#)

interesting.
also i meant to say matamp, not electric green.
i dont think its been mentioned but stef uses a 5 string esp bass for needles and pins.

custom gallery, some of the guitars are his.

Wow, I didn't know about the 5 string bass. I just searched for Needles and Pins live performance and you can see it very well here at 20 seconds actually: Deftones-Needles And Pins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZpu6fGni5g#)

Do you guys know what the tuning is?

Its 1 & 1/2 step down, so it would be Standard G#... the same tuning of his 7-strings guitar on the S/T album.

not sure

Post by: Teknoman on Sep 15, 2012, 04:06 AM
Is either 1 1/2 steps down (Standard G#) or 1 step up (Standard C#), cause that's the only way to play the song on a bass guitar the same way Stef plays it live.

I think the guitars I saw in the KNY pics were 8 strings (2 black super strat and 2 tele)... believe Stef mentioned he started using an 8 string on SNW but only had one at the time to test out. Dudes running Fractal AxeFX now w/ Marshall cabs (excellent info posted). Used Hughes and Kettner briefly (ATF? or European Backline) and also random (I'm assuming JCM900 or DSL2000) heads for TV spots and early shows.

5 String bass too like previously mentioned. Like to know what keyboard/synth he had on stage during SNW shows.

I know in a super guitar geek interview he ran 2 cabs loaded w/ Celestion 80's as his main signal (read mic'd) and the cabs onstage had different Celestions. Same interview he mentioned he was using EMG707 but was going to switch to 81-7 when they were to be released.

A red Telecaster, a white Telecaster, and a (sunburst?) Jazzmaster also for the new album. Jazzmasters look like Jaguars, same shape, different scale length (25.5" vs 24")

He also used a Jaguar Baritone (same one Beck uses in Glassjaw, which is like a Bass VI but 28" in scale versus 30" seen live and in the Eros clips and during SNW), a Yamaha Pacifica Tele clone (white), a custom painted SG (king or pope on it), the Chi tribute shows a Strat, and I distinctively remember a black SG with a white pickguard being played through a Fender combo amp before WP dropped (first time I saw them, dressed all Kung Fu style and matched lol)

Matamp (or Green Amp) 120GT I believe (it was on Ebay lulz), Vox AC30 (for cleans on Team Sleep) and Orange now I guess. Dual Terror and now... Thunderverb 50? The Orange video interview reveals it. All I can think of at the moment.

Sergio is all about the Jaguar basses... but also recorded (?) with a Fender Bass VI (I admit, I geeked on that cuz I want one lol). Ran an Ampeg setup (same as Chi's, SVT810 w/ a SVT 3Pro?) then went to Orange, and now Fractal w/ Orange 8x10 cabs. Looks like he might be using a Moog Taurus Bass synth to be played like a pedal board.

Chi (much love!)... random variations of a Fender Precision (P/J pickups, 4 and 5 strings, one black and one sunburst for sure). A Telecaster Bass (blonde w/ black pickguard), and a Music Man Sting Ray in the early days.

Ampeg rig seemed unchanged, but ran a 4x10 also along with that Music Man Sting Ray. No idea about FX. I think he might of ran a clean signal, or a distortion somehow (specifically on some ATF songs).

I always thought Teething was played in drop D. But I could be wrong.

Yeah when they did the show at Warner Summer Sessions and debuted Rosemary The setlist had the tuning on it and It was A#GCFAD for Chino's guitar... However, as far as the rest of the songs on Koi No Yokan I'm not too sure. I'd imagine a couple will be in Drop C for Chino.. That's usually his guitar tuning for a lot of songs.

So for Adrenaline, Around the Fur, and White Pony, Stephen obviously wrote his guitar parts on 6 string guitars Standard Tuning for Adrenaline Drop C# for ATF and Drop C for White Pony... Now from watching all the live videos, it seems like Stephen plays all of those 6 strings songs on 7 strings and DE and KNY on his 8 string guitars.. Does anyone know what tuning he plays ATF WP on his 7 string guitars? I'm trying to figure out how he would play classics like My own Summer and BQAD on a 7 string guitar.. The tunings gotta be different.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Carpenter#Equipment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Carpenter#Equipment)

QuoteSince transitioning from a 6-string to a seven-string guitar in late 2000, in live performances Carpenter plays the songs originally played on a six-string guitar on a 7-string with the two highest strings tuned to the same note (ex. EADGBEE for Adrenaline), after discovering that Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland did this to some of his seven-string guitars. Carpenter does this because it was harder for him to play a regular 6-string after getting used to the wider neck and longer scale length of his signature 7-strings. The song "Rocket Skates" from Diamond Eyes is played on an 8-string, although Carpenter does not make use of the low F# string. In order to prevent confusion between rigs while touring, he has two identical rigs, one for U.S. tours and the other for foreign countries.

I got his 207 ltd and I love it super good value for the price and it's still good enough quality that it's worth spending money upgrading the pickups and stuff, I barely use it for 7 string songs at the moment but I still choose to use it for 6 string songs because as a big guy it just feels alot more comfortable the neck fit's my hand alot better and I can play for long periods of time without my hand cramping up like on my 6, when I use a normal 6 now I feel like I'm using a children's guitar I don't think  I'd ever buy another 6.
Title: Re: gear
Post by: SwerveCityUSA on May 15, 2013, 05:28 AM
that's awesome. That's why I want a 7 and an 8 because you just can't create thunder with a 6, maybe a little lightning to ride on with a 6 but not thunder. Ive gotta get one.

For anyone interested, I got to have a chat to Abe after the first Melbourne show and I asked him about the snare he has been using for the majority of the year so far. Abe is no longer using the 14x6" Starphonic Brass Snare that he has used since 2010. He is now using a new Tama "Signature" prototype snare which is like an old OCDP snare with large vent holes. Not to sure when and if it will be made available to the public.

This is the only photo of it I can find.

Na fender have the slimmer headstocks, the one he's using looks alot like this but his guitars are all customised so theres never going to be an exact match, I heard he has a tele customised with emgs and a humbucker in the neck the one in the video could be that.
http://www.fender.com/en-NZ/series/american-vintage/american-vintage-64-telecaster-round-lam-rosewood-fingerboard-3-color-sunburst/ (http://www.fender.com/en-NZ/series/american-vintage/american-vintage-64-telecaster-round-lam-rosewood-fingerboard-3-color-sunburst/)
It might be some weird brand aswell though I know he's not a signed artist anywhere and in the past he's used lots of odd cheaper brands like yamaha, gretsch and epiphone but lately I've noticed he's been sticking to the higher end brands like Gibson and Fender so chances are it is fender.

Thats most definitely an EPS/LTD "vintage plus telecaster", probably custom made because of the neck pickup. And it seems that the logo on the headstock was sanded out or covered with tape. Or maybe he requested a headstock without logo, ESP used to offer that option on his "online custom form" back in the day.

Do you have guitars's history of Chino ?

And what about the tunings of Chino and Stef on each album ?
Also you can see another Gibson SG with natural mate finish when they performed at the Wembley Arena in London, it was used for songs from the White Pony album (He threw that guitar at the end of that show).
Does anybody knows what happened to that guitar Chino threw?
