Title: Bands/Artists that inspire and influence Deftones
Post by: deftoner664 on Sep 13, 2012, 06:32 AM
Post bands and artists that influence Deftones based on statements made by the guys themselves in the past or present. Perhaps you may recall these bands or artists from mentions within interviews, twitter posts, personal blog playlists, etc. Of course each are unique to each member in the band, but I think it's interesting to know what kind of musicians inspire the band we all love so much. The intention of this thread is to not only expose their favorite artist's, but to also discuss similar connections found within their own music, potentially from their inspiration by these artists( if you desire to delve that far, of course).

Just to name a few:

The Cure

Prince

Depeche Mode

Bad Brains

Duran Duran

The Smiths

Weezer

Meshugga

M83

Fugazi

Helmet

Morrissey

In regards to the Cure, I think the dark lyrical content of Robert Smith reminds me a lot of Chino's lyrics, the imagery, the abstract and ambiguous contexts, yet still based on simple things like women, love, sex, past memories, close relationships etc. The Cure's reverberated and ambient guitars remind me of the spacey guitar riffs the deftones write (i.e. Rosemary , Konomi Code, Beauty School, just off the top of my head). Although the drummer from The Cure is kinda reserved and basic with his playing, I hear some technique similar to Abe's drumming style.

As far as Prince goes, I'm not too sure why the guys of the Tone's have such a huge hard on for him.. Maybe his iconic figure during the 80's? The melodic and experimental nature of his vocals?

Would love to hear your opinion's about these artists and others!

Hum
Accordingly to Chino Deftones got their "tone" from Hum... and i completely agree
Hum - Stars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s7e32EOiCU#)

Tech N9ne
I read somewhere that Stef was really into Tech 9 stuff while recording Diamond Eyes. Maybe he wrote some guitar riffs while jamming and listening to Tech n9ne.
Tech N9ne - Be Warned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13HtvoUqQAY#)

Sade
Chino said it was a big inspiration for him. Not sure about how Sade influenced him... maybe in the the singing style.
SADE - SMOOTH OPERATOR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY-H0ce6wkw#)

Bohren & Der Club Of Gore
Eros influence?... who knows
Bohren & Der Club Of Gore - Midnight Walker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znJGiSqfbas#)

Blue Moods Of Spain
I think this song inspired Digital Bath
Blue Moods Of Spain - Untitled #1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjYVUMz1Pgs#)

Cocteau Twins
You can say whatever you want but to me this song was a big inspiration for Sextape.
Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXlJRe0ZDTE#)

Teknoman, wholeheartedly agree with you on Hum..... After listening to Cocteau Twins i for sure hear the similar chord progressions played on Sextape. Nice post by the way too!  ;D

Yeah good thread !

I'm not familiar with all the bands listed in the first post, but knowing Depeche Mode very well I think the influence on a large number of atmospheres and in Chino's singing is obvious :

Depeche Mode - The Love Thieves

depeche mode - the love thieves (1997) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQiKMimMgzQ#)

Deftones - Digital Bath

Deftones- Digital Bath (with lyrics) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZF9vXeX_nQ#)

It gets even more obvious with these :

Depeche Mode - Waiting for the night

Depeche Mode - Waiting for the Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyrpRzdvp5U#)

Deftones - Lucky You

Deftones - Lucky you (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lRNrSb9EOY#ws)

And yeah of course, the 'tones covered "To have and to hold" from Music for the masses :

Depeche Mode's version

DEPECHE MODE - TO HAVE AND TO HOLD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Le5Z8CjIzY#)

Deftones' version

Deftones - To Have And To Hold (Studio Version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51xD56KMzm4#)

They also covered The Sweetest Perfection from Violator but the sound quality sucks.

I feel like these two songs have some sort of connection. The noisiness, the way Chino sings like Belinda Butcher during the verse/spoken word/the outro in the MBV track reminds me of Chino's guitar playing...I don't know..something about these songs connect. Like the noise that Frank plays is very mind boggling similar to the noise Kevin Shields is playing during the chorus. The cover of SNW is totally inspired by MBV's EP cover. :-)

Found this video on this forum a while back, an interview with Chino back in 07'. At 8 mins in he starts talking about elements of music that drives his interests... around 9:10 he mentions M83 and what about the band that inspires him musically and emotionally.

This song by the Cure, to me personally, reminds me alot of similar sounds and dynamics found on Saturday Night Wrist, A bit of Diamond Eyes, and White Pony.

Have too be careful calling all these influences saw an interview once where the interviewer was asking chino about some of these bands like Radiohead an Chino said to him just because they like and listen to a band it doesn't automatically mean it influences them, sometimes their just fans.

Well, based on the new Guitar World interview with Steph that has been posted recently, we can for sure say that Animals as Leaders' Tosin Abasi has inspired Steph's guitar work on the new track Entombed on KNY.

Abe was influenced by Stuart Copeland of the Police. He said that numerous times in interviews. He also is a big fan of Neil Peart of Rush, so maybe he is an influence too altough his drumming style is way different (more technical than groove) than what Abe does....

As a massive fan of the Smiths, The Cure and Depeche Mode myself, I love hearing those influences creep into the Deftones sound.

There's no metal band out there that has the range of moods and emotions Deftones evoke.

Chino's repped these two a few times for their "futuristic" sounds. I really like them. This song brings back memories to the Diamond Eyes tour.  Blasted this on their speakers before the show.. Good times.

Quite typical for a guitarist, yet unexpected for Stephen Carpenter.. Here is Eddie Van Halen, Steph's favorite guitarist; shreddin' some shit.mofukas.

Yeah, I know... this is a necro bump from hell.

So Chino has mentioned many of times in the past how Faith no More has been an influence to Deftones. I was listening to Angel Dust  and heard some crazy similarities on the song "Caffeine" compared to "Nosebleed".  The part In Caffeine is only a small section starting at the 2:20 to 3:03

(2:20-3:03 similar bass line build to heavy break down like Nosebleed)

(1:53 - 2:53 is the part that I feel that was inspired from Caffeine)

You can elaborate on other bands/songs that have been mentioned or list and discuss others that have not. Sometimes in interviews they'll talk about who they currently are listening too or artist they draw inspiration from and respect in the realm of music.  Anything of that nature is appropriate to post in this thread.

So what Morrissey solo albums do you guys think Chino is referencing in that NME article? He said something about an "Elvis-y delay on his vocals" that he's been ripping off from Morrissey for the new record.

Plus, I forgot how Chino has said in past interviews how much he's been inspired by Morrissey and its never been really discussed in this thread; like he use to stand in his back yard with a broomstick and try to imitate Morrissey I guess.. lol

A quote from the NME article: "He's always been a favourite lyricist of mine – the beautiful, poetic melancholy of it all."

Anybody care to discuss or speculate?

Viva Hate (1988)
http://youtu.be/UgQanZlkybI (http://youtu.be/UgQanZlkybI)

If I had to guess I'd say Chino would consider this album a Morrissey staple. I really enjoyed this one, a lot of solid tracks on here.

Vauxhall and I (1992) (check out the songs 'Spring Heeled Jim' and 'Used to Be a Sweet Boy' 31:10 in this video till the end of the song is very much like Chino's style) Think this one is my favorite...
http://youtu.be/PI9Nc3i6MAU (http://youtu.be/PI9Nc3i6MAU)

Sing Your Life ( how ironic and suitable for this discussion)
You can really hear that "Elvis-y delay" on the vocals in this track that Chino was referencing.

Will Never Marry (extended version) This song is great.

I'm a huge fan of Morrissey so this is cool news to me that Chino is obsessing over his solo albums, as Moz solo is so underrated compared to The Smiths. I noticed Chino made a playlist of a few Moz solo tracks on Spotify a while ago, but I didn't realise he was particularly obsessing over them and taking influence from them recently.

His playlist consisted of: Seasick Yet Still Docked, Little Man What Now?, King Leer, Spring Heeled Jim, Yes I Am Blind, Teenage Dad on His Estate and Will Never Marry.

yeah man, im thinking a lot of the entire 'viva hate' vibe, it has a big obscure atmosphere, distorted voices and moz awesomeness, im pretty stoked about this for sure.

This song from Vauxhall and I.

Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK3PC2iYGIk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK3PC2iYGIk)

The higher registered vocals, the ethereal moaning and cooing, you can definitely hear that beautiful melancholy, the sound effects (hell, just read the lyrics), and there are specific moments in the track that sound just like chino's style.

Incredibly moving song, one of my favorites.

Guitar.com: What about earlier on? Who or what had inspired you to play?

Carpenter: Definitely Scott Ian. He had the baddest tone and he was my favorite guitarist.

Guitar.com: Was that the type of guitar sound you would hear in your head as you were trying to dial in your tone?

Carpenter: I'd say it was a cross between him and Jim Martin from Faith No More.

Remembered this article from back in the day... figured I'd reference it for Scott Ian and Jim Martin...

Scott's tone and riffs had an influence on Stephen.  I know there's a video out there where he talks about it a little more but cant seem to find it at the moment.
