Title: Album Week Gold Edition, Week 6: Bands I've never told you about, part 1
Post by: An bád dubh on Jan 17, 2015, 08:50 PM
This week consists (and the future part 2) of:

Bands that I have never talked about or mentioned to you before, ever.

This is music that I listen to at times and its awesome, but its bands that I dont have any bond or relation to. I didnt grow up with them like with many of my other favorite bands. That means that I can mostly just be objective with the music and nothing more. These bands are also rather new even to me, with most of them I have heard only one album so far.

This is part 1, which consists 80 % purely Hip Hop and the rest 20 % of Electronica/Jazz/Drum'n Bass/Downtempo. I was gonna make it more Trip Hop/Downtempo/Electronica but I realized that I have at some points talked about pretty much all my eg. Trip Hop favorites, so I cant put them here.
- And when I say Hip Hop, I mean REAL hip hop, not just money, bitches and cars. like the "hip hop" nowadays. So if you dont like or even hate hip hop, check these out, because I hate the hip hop in the media too.

I will add a description and link to each song and album. Also, I liked how others have added the songs to a playlist, so I will do the same.

The playlist to all the songs is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQAhnh9ZvZ0&list=PLZ1EF40lIintd00h3bfnaVLah-4YhxriA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQAhnh9ZvZ0&list=PLZ1EF40lIintd00h3bfnaVLah-4YhxriA)

Separate link and desciption to each song/album/band:

Genre: Electronica/Jazz/Downtempo/Drum'n Bass
Year: 2004
Description: French band with lots of awesome beats and instruments such as saxophones and flutes. Some songs have rapping in french. Im not very familiar with even this album yet but this song is just great and chill.

2. Cunninlynguists - Lynguistics

http://youtu.be/5VtsTW_t9xk (http://youtu.be/5VtsTW_t9xk)

Album (with link): Will Rap For Food https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK9EmWZNPpo&list=PL9jmZZBcWhYQOfgtHnniROwxeR1qrr6hG&index=1&spfreload=10 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK9EmWZNPpo&list=PL9jmZZBcWhYQOfgtHnniROwxeR1qrr6hG&index=1&spfreload=10)
Genre: Hip Hop
Year: 2001
Description: Their debut album and the only one Ive listened to so far. By this small listen I must say that its one of the best hip hop groups that Ive heard. I dont know if I even need to check out their other stuff anytime soon. Was really hard to choose a song from this great album, so I chose the first. Listen to the full album if you have time.

3. Visionaries - In The Good

http://youtu.be/wRlJiQMM6sU (http://youtu.be/wRlJiQMM6sU)

Album (with link): We Are The Ones (We've been waiting for) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ7JeJF3ZTk&index=1&list=PLcjYBDzkCaOG99UcsOHS3G2jTSN6tFAru (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ7JeJF3ZTk&index=1&list=PLcjYBDzkCaOG99UcsOHS3G2jTSN6tFAru)
Genre: Hip Hop
Year: 2006
Description: Again a rather unknown band even for me, I think I've had their discography for like 8 years but never really knew what they could do. Another great hiphop act.

4. MFDoom, Nas - Some of us have angels

http://youtu.be/7A2sOS1R0Qw (http://youtu.be/7A2sOS1R0Qw)

Album (with link): Nastradoomus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttrbiUktgUs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttrbiUktgUs)
Genre: Hip Hop
Year: 2003
Description: MF Doom has done so much that I cant really keep up or even understand what the guy is about. He makes great music though. It will take the rest of my life to check all of his stuff. This album is rapping by Nas, beats from Doom. I guess it can be called a remix of Nas' Nastradamus from 1999. This one feels much better than that, for me.

5. The Roots - You Got Me

http://youtu.be/MJCHeEQV454 (http://youtu.be/MJCHeEQV454)

Album (with link): Things Fall Apart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dpZaQU5MwQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dpZaQU5MwQ)
Genre: Hip Hop
Year: 1999
Description: All I knew about The Roots was the Jimmy Fallon shows and what was in the media. Didnt think that much of them. But. At least their first albums are just awesome hip hop.

The full playlist link again in case you missed it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQAhnh9ZvZ0&list=PLZ1EF40lIintd00h3bfnaVLah-4YhxriA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQAhnh9ZvZ0&list=PLZ1EF40lIintd00h3bfnaVLah-4YhxriA)

I hope this gave some a new look on Hip Hop. I know I have gotten into it again and much more because of these artists.

The part 2 in the future will be rock, including even a band that I myself do not know the name to.

Who does Week 7, lostpilot?

I wish I had more love for hip hop, bro!

And yes, if we're done with the people who can do lists, I can do week 7

Same here, unfortunately not much here to float my personal boat. Plus for the Roots though.

Great!

And I know what you mean guys, Ive had a really long break from hip hop too, now it just kinda hit me again really hard, such great music within that genre. Im really glad that I can enjoy it, as I cant enjoy a lot of potentially great music within for example the really heavy/dark stuff and within most of the instrumental scene.

Be prepared for part 2 in the future, it will be 100 % rock.

Some friends used to listen to nothing else but hip hop, so usually when I was hanging out at their place we'd listen to hip hop all evening. So I gave this genre a try many times and even found some stuff that I can live with, like Wu Tang Clan, Saul Williams, some Snoop Dogg albums or old The Roots as you mentioned, but even when it comes to these artists its highly unlikely I would ever choose to listen to hip hop on purpose.

Sayag Jazz Machine sounds good, I might search for more of their music.
