Title: Songs that sound like deftones
Post by: B0RNtoR0CK on Jun 15, 2016, 07:37 PM
List a few songs that remind you of deftones musically:

(please don't post anything that pre-dates deftones, I'm not asking for what influenced deftones, I'm looking for songs that you feel were influenced by deftones nor is this a "check out my band or check out this band it sounds like deftones")

Filter - No re-entry. Intro has a very similar chino vocal technique
Make Them Suffer - Ether. Single just came out and the rhythms completely reminds me of deftones

The riff in Kevin Owens theme song (if you are familiar with wrestling) sounds quite a bit like the 9 second point of Rickets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw5nVVMeHIo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw5nVVMeHIo)

This cheesy trailer for an Australian Football game has a riff that sounds like Kimdracula. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlZ_dwGKx3Q (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlZ_dwGKx3Q)

In this song Islander basically use Rosemary's end riff  (around 2:30 in) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB0PfSz-y5c (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB0PfSz-y5c)

There used to be a Finnish band by the name of Major Label that took its main influence from Deftones, especially on their early EPs. Unfortunately, the band has pretty much disbanded as the singer founded a new, more pop-orientated project that has become very popular.
Always (k)new: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfChF0JpK2k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfChF0JpK2k)
Bite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2xGd0YmIQo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2xGd0YmIQo) (The female vocals at the end, quite similar to Knife Prty, are done by Eilera, a lovely French artist whose album Fusion is magnificent in case someone is interested.)

For the record, I don't see them as a rip-off by any means - if I did, I probably wouldn't enjoy them as much as I do. Having said that, the influence is rather obvious.

The French band AqME can sound Deftones-esque occasionally as well.

Here's a weird one:

The intro to The intro to Dead Ocean (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Rvwe0tv0lo) by metalcore band The Agonist really reminds me of something Deftones could've written. Also, the guitar riff sounds an awful lot like the outro to Royal.

Damn, this one is pretty great. The outro riff (~3:42) to Always (K)new sounds like a straight ripoff from Passenger though, but I still loved the song.

I love Chevelle and I love that song. I think calling it a "rip off" is a bit of a stretch.

Have we all forgotten how many songs Deftones have "ripped off" of Hum, particularly on You'd Prefer an Astronaut? Hell, the White Pony album cover is even a "rip off" of that cover.

I agree, the Chevelle song is catchier, more accessible, and more radio friendly. That's not to say Chevelle is "better," no way. But Chevelle basically took elements from Tool and Deftones and made them radio friendly and accessible to a wider audience, sort of like a Lite version if we can use a beer analogy. Maybe not as flavorful and well rounded, but still has its own merits.

These guys have directly noted Deftones as an influence. They aren't too bad either.
The breakdowns (like at 2:31) almost remind me of the ending of Diamond Eyes, it's almost identical. Or even the ending of Rosemary.

Beat me to it. This entire album has a heavy Deftones influence. I listen to this album frequently. The new album has less Deftones influence but instead borrows from other genres heavily. A not a mix of genres into one sound....but more like a rap metal part, a reggae part, an emo part, a 311 style part, etc.......nothing original on either album but fun listens nonetheless.

At least the boys admitted to nicking some ideas from Hum. You'd Prefer An Astronaut provided the basis for the White Pony artwork as well. That's something I love about Deftones, they've turned me on (!) to so many other bands that I got into. I love that they don't stick to the one scene like most mainstream bands do.

Far - The Ghost That Kept on Haunting

Toward the middle of this song, it just turns into this hulking beast that rages on til the end. The relentless heaviness and creepy vibe, totally remind me of Deftones on songs like Finger of Death, Korea, WGTB etc. The spacey sounds toward the end are very Frank too.

This is like a heavier, more sporadic Deftones. Maybe if Stephen had more control over the band this is what his guitar work would sound like haha.

This comment put it perfectly:  "Sounds like Meshuggah skull-fucking Deftones while Ion Dissonance is smacking it from the back."

Love Nothing. Probably my favorite current band at the moment. Nothing for sure is at least partially influenced by Deftones. A memeber of Nothing, Brandon Setta, is a huge Deftones fan.

Tired of Tomorrow is good but Guilty of Everything is one of my favorite albums in the past couple of years. They also sound great live.

Which , I feel , is an insult to Deftones.

That new album is laughable.

I mean there are similarities to deftones but chino's voice is so unique. Personally, I think the comparison game is stupid. If it sounds good then it sounds good, if it doesn't then it doesn't. Most people I personally know actually like the new SS album. I think for the most part it's pretty good. It's very raw. TBH I was more disappointed by GORE. It's hard to listen to due to production.

Just went through Marilyn Manson's catalog.  The chorus in this song is very Deftones (at 1:07): https://youtu.be/7YH0fPeYoAA?t=1m7s (https://youtu.be/7YH0fPeYoAA?t=1m7s)

It's one of my favourite records, I will admit some songs could have turned out better however overall, every song is very unique in its own way and I feel Shaun really got the best out of Chino.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it isn't so... I see Gore as Catshit. Having a different opinion doesn't make me less of a fan...

Right! The "fan" argument is BS. See it everyday when people defend the new Heavy, Linkin Park's crap (https://twitter.com/theneedledrop/status/839887578048434176) song.

LMAO, Stinkin Park. You know you're done when you've been around since the late 90's but are now resorting to ripping off Twenty One Pilots to stay relevant.

Yeah, you definitely don't have to like everything a band does to be a fan. Not liking a particular album, or a particular song, doesn't make one less of a fan.

But eventually, if you are continuously trashing a band that you claim to be a "fan" of... at what point are you actually not a "fan" of the band? At what point does it become the reverse, and you're actually just a fan of a particular album, or a particular time period? Some Deftones "fans" haven't liked anything since WP. Does that truly make them a "fan" of Deftones? Or are they just a fan of those particular albums...

I don't really have the answer, I'm just pondering.

I'm pretty sure that if Deftones had made eight Adrenaline's in a row, they would be RedPill/The Prodigy/Seven's favorite band of all time.

Then why the hell are you a fan of Korn and Limp Bizkit? Lol...they've been making the same songs over and over for twenty years. The only time LB tried to evolve was with that Unquestionable Truth shit by biting Rage. That's until Fred realized no one wanted to hear the Nookie guy make shallow political observations, so he went right back to his usual red cap frat boy shit. And no, Korn making a dubstep album isn't them evolving. That's an example of Korn trying to cling onto popular music trends in a desperate attempt to stay popular. A Korn...dubstep album. *shudders*

Granted, Stinkin Park has evolved, but it has NOT been a good evolution...as evidenced by their new single.

The dubstep album is a bad example of any " evolution " . " Issues " , " Untouchables " , " See You On The Other Side " etc. are better examples. They can be hit-or-miss, though, I'll admit . I really enjoyed their most recent album, though.

Yeah, those are all old albums though. The dubstep one is more recent. As far as their newest album goes? Well, I'm never going to listen to something called "The Serenity of Suffering" just off general principle alone.

Chevelle- Send the Pain Below. Basically a BQAD rip off.

Speaking of BQAD ripoffs:
'Out of Spite' by Stutterfly is another one. Can't find the single track on utube but the album the song is from was uploaded here: https://youtu.be/awyUeApvb3c?t=1953 (https://youtu.be/awyUeApvb3c?t=1953) (32:34 mark)
Never heard it mentioned in Deftones circles before

the bassist of stutterfly formed an incredible deftones-sounding band called shreddy krueger. it's one of my favourite bands, I strongly suggest you to check them out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRxyae4Q5tU&t=0s&list=PLoLB3fFrR1337jdm1rM8YC0MNuweFnDUy&index=5 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRxyae4Q5tU&t=0s&list=PLoLB3fFrR1337jdm1rM8YC0MNuweFnDUy&index=5)

Yeah, Vexes really sounds like Deftones. Almost to a creepy degree.

The Deftones reddit put me onto this band, sounds like Deftones mixed with some Team Sleep and Palms.
