The Decline
Rest had left me drowsy.
It seems the hours of sleep
Had some residual effect
On the state I knew too well; a stasis.
The chance of experience,
That human life provides, had long been lost,
Along with all aspirations;
Importance itself unimportant.
In such a somnolent state, my mind,
Left vacant to introspection,
And greatly lacking vision,
Troubled me, as, inwardly, I desired something
Other than the time to sit idle
(For lows compound with lack of energy
And sap the joy from life,)
But I could not will it away.
Too long at rest and life
Begins to matter less, and, I found,
If life doesn't amount to much,
Even that has profound influence.
