I played hockey in high school. Australian hockey players are ruthless :( I got bashed so many times before I learnt how to stick up for myself on the field (we don't have ice here so we play on a smooth field).
I played field hockey in 11th and 12th grade
Did you get bruises on your legs...really bad ones. I got hit with the stick in the thigh and I couldn't move it for two weeks. That's when I was goalie cause our goalie was sick.

I'm as happy as anyone, but we've always been great in the regular season. Best winning percentage of any of the big 4 professional North American sports in the regular season since 1990 goes to the Detroit Red Wings.
The playoffs on the other hand, have been major disappointments the last couple of seasons. Here's to hoping to a better playoff year this season, the things that matters to Detroit.

Growing up, I fell in love with hockey and the Buffalo Sabres because of a sports channel called MSG that we get around here. MSG used to show Devils games too, so I started developing a liking for them as well.

That was one year when he was with us, probably 2003-2004 ? but it wasnt that many points...and dude hasnt played at all this season, maybe like 1/4 of the season and then he injured his back, went for back surgery and is now playing with Detroit and still hasnt played a game yet this year..

What a fucking game!!! I literally had tears in my eyes after Straka scored because of how good of an effort the Sabres showed all night. Then Chris hits the back of the net with seven seconds to go and we go fucking ballistic. I run upstairs screaming and jumping around, then run back down to continue the celebration when...BOOM! My head slams into my low cieling at the bottom of the stairs. I was bleeding for a minute and a little woozy, but I couldn't miss overtime to go the the ER. Maxim finishes it in OT, oh my god, the celebration is even bigger.

Anyone followed what's been happening in the NHL during summer? Transfers and drafts, I mean.
Might be because I'm bored at work but I've been checking the NHL news daily and I've gotten excited of the upcoming season. Probably the biggest thing was Marian Hossa's trade to Detroit. Reigning champions have almost the same team as couple of months ago but added a world-class player into the roster. I got to admire how they fit that roster under the salary cap. Definitely strongest contender for the Stanley Cup, again.
Strong contenders for the other end of the standings, Toronto, have made couple of...uh, surprising transfers. Hagman and Finger with the salaries probably too big for their skills. Sundin's still thinking his future. If the Maple Leafs can't keep Sundin in their roster, they're pretty much fucked. Though maybe there's a reason for going down; maybe they want the first pick of next summer's draft...after all, the hype for the next wonderkid, John Tavares, has been quite big.
Speaking of Sundin, there are still couple of players in the same situation, mainly Joe Sakic and Teemu Selänne. I really do hope all of them keep playing and start the season from beginning.
I'm predicting the Red Wings to win it all, Ovechkin will score most goals and Thornton wins the Art Ross Trophy. Rookie of the year is probably first round pick Steven Stamkos though I hope that Janne Pesonen of the Penguins, best scorer in Finland last season, breaks into the two first lines of Pittsburgh's roster and put up some good numbers.

I'd guess the Blackhawks will do better this year. Kane and Toews are a year older, they got Campbell and Huet and if Havlat stays healthy, a playoff spot is possible. Just makes me wonder why they signed Huet since Khabibulin already enjoys a huge salary, or maybe they're trying to sell Khabby. And they got promising goalie prospects too. Future looks bright.

Yeah I follow it all. Hagman is getting paid a justified amount, finger got overpaid but that's what happens with free agency and the cap going up every year.
Sundin, I hope he comes back, not to make the playoffs but just to see him on the leafs one more season would be awesome.

Detroit is almost completely healthy, so they will definitely be a factor. But I honestly don't see them doing anything really special this season. The Hawks are definitely playing good hockey. I think its going to be between the Pens and Caps. I don't think anyone from the Western Conference can beat those 2.........

Fuuuuck! Yesterdays game was the best I think Nashville and Chicago have played the whole playoffs. Playing wise I think Nashville did much better than Chicago,less shots on the goal but still getting ahead,less penalties,but Rinne got weak on us. Super bummed we lost,but hopefully we can come back with a win Monday. Got my tickets yesterday,they were a bit more than last weeks game,but I just can't miss this game. Honestly,after watching that game last night, I'm SUPER surprised that Vancouver was ranked #3. Blackhawks got 2 goals in under a minute...TWICE!!
that was definitely amazing, especially when they did it in the 3rd, because i got really nervous when it was 3-1 and the canucks were threatening again to score. the SJ/Chi series will be completely different, which kind of worries me now. SJ is fast as fuck, which i think we can keep up with, but then riding a rookie goalie this far into the post-season is not the ideal situation.

Datsyuk is probably my favorite player to watch. I think he has the best hands in the league. But I don't think anyone thinks the game better than Crosby. He always finds a way to get it done.

Welp...we get to play Vancouver. *bleh* I personally think Rinne is a better goalie than Luongo,so hopefully since we've had time to rest we'll have the advantage.
Luongo looked shaky last night, we just couldn't really get any offensive momentum. But is was a satisfying conclusion to a what turned out to be a great series, so I'm really not pissed off. I think the Hawks have some good young talent for next year, AND we finally have a franchise goalie. Crawford was absolutely unbelievable the last few games. We just need our stars to get that championship hunger back that they lacked most of this season.
I'm looking forward to potentially seeing the Preds full off a nice upset.

Wow...tonight's game was noting but horrible calls by the refs. Hooking? Are you kidding me?!? Kesler was holding Weber,and that wasn't the first time in the game that Kesler played like a bitch.He and Luongo should win an Academy Award instead of the Stanley Cup. Then the Canucks had 7 players on the ice at one time and they let it go. Shady calls most definitely. Nashville didn't play their best,I'll admit,but damn a bunch of bad calls.

Probably because he's actually healthy this year and the team is so good. Zeterberg, Franzen, Lidstrom, Kronwall, Rafalski, ect... Even the secondary players like Cleary and Eriksson are real good.
Crosby is the best, dunno if he'll be the same though.

It could be like the NFL strike that just happened, where a time will come and both sides realize they need to play to make more money, and then shit gets worked out. The current NBA is bad though, the owners and players are so far apart. Teams are losing money left and right because they hand out huge unnecessary contracts.
I don't know much about next years's NHL lockout, but I've heard that it's not good. That could be just to scare fans, though, because I'm pretty sure they have the same problems as the NFL: a lot of teams are making good money, players want a bigger piece, and then an underlying safety issue.
I just heard about it recently, and it scared me, because hockey's been a roll lately. But this coming season is the only sport I'm actually anticipating. Ain't gonna worry about it till next August or so.
They can't afford another lockout. Won't happen, they must have learned from the last one.

I actually thought we had a good chance of making the play-offs this year, but I'll take a division :). I didn't want to post anything on here or any other boards cheering the team on because after 12 years with no play-offs, you see a lot of things go south really quickly.
Home ice should help, and I do not think this series is going to be so one-sided like the experts are predicting, I think this one could go 6-7 games and most of them ending in OT. But anyways good luck to everyone in the post-season! I can't wait for things to kick-off on Wednesday.

Something hilarious happened yesterday. I beat my friend in NHL 12 as Kazakhstan and he was Pittsburgh. Fleury gave up 10 goals. 10! Then we flip over to the game and eventually Fleury blows a 3 goal lead. Almost induced a heart attack for my buddy.
That Flyers/Pens game last night was legendary. I can't describe how happy I am that Vancouver are down 2-0 in their series. And how could I forget Detroit grabbing a win to take back home. Bring it on Nashville!!

I was a bit upset when I posted that last comment. It's good hockey and will be entertaining but losing the emotional investment just changes the feeling of the game for me. I certainly won't enjoy it as much but I'll still watch it because it has been (even if not in my favor) good hockey.
However, my main focus is now switched to the QMJHL, specifically the Halifax Mooseheads. It's nice seeing people in my home town excited about local junior hockey again since we've been doing so well in the Memorial Cup tournament.

I don't really mind Brady/Belichick anymore, I really like what they do with the Patriots. But I've just always despised the other teams in general. Plus the fans are asshole like Crazylegs said.
When I was a kid my parents took me to Boston on a road trip. One day I wore my Bulls "1996 Greatest Team Ever" tshirt. I was like 12. And about a dozen people that day gave me a lot of shit.
Bruins fans are generally assholes and though I'm a Detroit Red Wings fan through and through, I actually really like the Bruins. They've been my number 2 team for many many years. Also Chicago booted my beloved Red Wings (though I gotta say, Chicago earned that series and I give them major props for that) so naturally, I'm pulling for Boston.
I hear you man, I've got a 2nd and 3rd team haha. What an epic game 1. Hawks kinda stole that one. They really played like shit for most of the first 2 periods, and thank god for Crawford being fantastic.
This series looks to be legendary.

New season! Looking forward to these new divisions in action. Still think they need 2 expansion teams in the West to even out the East and West (preferrably Seattle and Portland or a Canadian team). The Pacific looks stacked though. I've read that San Jose is the real deal this season, as is Vancouver with Tortorella coaching now.
Good opening night it seems like. From the highlights all three games looked pretty intense. I'd agree that San Jose and Vancouver look good, but don't they always? They gotta start thinking about winning some cups before their star players retire, or become "not so star players".
Exactly, they have been known to choke. An interesting thing I read from one of ESPN's writers was that they went out on a limb and picked the Coyotes as their best team in the West. I know they have a really good defense and coach, but jesus that sounds like a stretch. They were so terrible last year, but the guy thinks being stabilized with new ownership and all that will work wonders. We'll see I guess.
Hawks looked pretty good against a good team, so that's all I care about, haha.
That is a pretty weird pick. I'd say the safest bets are still Vancouver and Chicago.

It's almost poetic. Can it be a coincedence that the goalies are playing so good under Roy? Still it's early in the season though, this can't go on forever, but i'd love it if they made the playoffs again. It's been too long.
Yeah I remember when they were awesome, haha. Obviously, I'm going against them because St Louis is causing enough trouble for the Blackhawks.
But honestly they really need to screw up to miss the playoffs. I think the new alignment means that at least 3 teams from every division make the playoffs. And after StL, Colorado, and Chicago, there are some baaaad teams in the Central division. Either way they are already exceeding everyone's expectations (probably their owns fans, too).

Well not my Hawks, that's looking inevitable. I've been waiting since January for Colorado to collapse. Inexperience has to show eventually right? But damn, MacKinnon looks legit. The West has been outstanding all year, so I think the winner comes out of Colorado-Anaheim. Most likely the Ducks in my opinion.

Not that the Wild won't give problems to the Hawks, but a Hawks/Avs series would have been spectacular. The Hawks look hot right now, but the Avs absolutely gave them fits this season (especially at the shitty Colorado altitude).

Is he really the only Norwegian? Did not know that. Maybe you settle this debate my friends and I occasionally have: why doesn't Norway have a decent hockey team and produce NHLers? I always thought there should be no reason they can't compete with Sweden and Finland.

At the moment he's the only one yeah. Unfortunately, no one cares about hockey in Norway, so we barely have any hockey rinks. It's ridiculous. In Sweden and Finland, i'm guessing, it's almost as big as football (in Finland probably even more so) which is all anyone cares about here except cross country skiing. The last few years have seen a rise in interest in certain cities around the country, but the coverage of the top league even is horrendous. During the playoff finals this year there was a game broadcast without commentaries and one fucking camera. It brings my piss to a boil! It's an infinitely more interesting game to watch than football, that's just fact.

From my vantage point, that really is just unfathomable that they wouldn't give a shit about hockey at all.

I'm just starting to accept that the run between the Hawks and Kings is finally over. So accepting that (probably my 2 favorite teams) I'm hoping another Western Conference team wins it all. They would definitely earn it, since each team has a brutal path to the cup. I think it'll be either the Stars or Sharks, and am rooting for the Sharks. They've earned it after all these years, and just think of the Brent Burns beard potential!!
For tradition's sake, I would like to see the Caps choke once again before reaching the Finals.

Really psyched about the Nashville vs Winnipeg game tonight.Can the jets beat the preds?both teams in such good form for now but home ice for the preds and scheiffele's missing for winnipeg. Perhaps not that crucial when they have such good depth in the offensive (like nashville) but he will be missed. It's a good year to be a hockey fan. So many spectacular players at the moment. It's gonna be interesting to see if Laine overtakes Ovechkin, either way, Ovechkin is a fucking machine still. Fourth fastest to reach 600 goals, in this day and age is an enormous achievement. I wouldn't be surprised if he reaches #2 on the all time goal scoring list if he plays into his late thirties. Gretzky's 894 is probably out of reach though Unless he keeps the same pace for the rest of his career.
Preds just came out blasting yesterday,3-0 after just 9min, 15-1 in shots... timeout and goalkeeper change for winnipeg .what an opening it was-total dominance.it was awesome to watch.winnipeg changed tacticts after the timeout and played much more physical to change the way things were going, and it worked.2nd period was winnipegs, 3rd was back and forth but preds could keep them away. good offence, probably best defence in the entire nhl and goaltending is very solid too.rinne maybe even gets the vezina the way he has been playing.complete team. 3-1 mirrored the game i think.
I dig vegas too, they play with such speed and with good chemistry - really fun too watch.all the leftovers players that weren't protected during expansion seem to want to show the old teams that they aren't that bad. A pity now with all the injuries though, can't wait to see Neal and reilly smith back in the lineup!
