An excellent group for England. If we fuck up there, we're idiots.

I don't think Sven should be replaced. I hope he wins it for us and can then rub it in the FA's faces. Stuart Pearce would be good though.

If my drunken eyes see correctly, Finland is in the only 8-group. And Belgium, Serbia & ..., Poland and Portugal are not the easiest opponents. What the fuck?

Really, Finland has more talent than the results or ranks shows but the groups have been impossible lately. Hell, the EC '06 qualification, there was Holland, Romania and Czech Rep in the same group.

But I hope the new coach could bring us to the top.

commiserations dude. thats a bit of a bastard, i have to agree.
still, nevermind... a good group for England

Tonedef... yeah, i kinda agree with you. it would be good to win the world cup anyway but also cos of the situation it will leave Sven in.

I want a english manager but u know what, if the best man for the job isnt english then so be it. i recon stuart pearce could do with more exp. maybe give him another position.

anyway more importantly..... GOD HAS RETURNED  :!:

If they ran out of european countries?...maybe Kazakstan, Azerbaijan etc are there because Soviet Union used to be there...but as far as I know, Israel has no past or present geographical connections to Europe, or then I'm poorly educated. I'd say kick Israel out and make them all groups of seven.

On a side note, I had no idea I've been in this thread earlier. :?

Boro exposed the weak link in Chelsea's defence, Carvalho can't head the ball and they used it to there advantage, I just hope more teams can find blips in Chelsea so we (Man Utd) can take advantage of it

it was funny though, i was saying bring gracia on he will score, and hey presto!

liverpool have shown chelsea up for their weaknesses in the past, shame it wasnt so on their last meeting.

ah man. he is one player i really dont like. i dunno why. i cant really explain it. i used to work as a steward there and id watch him and he just seems to stand there and put away other people efforts.
i dunno, it might be exagerated, i havnt watched UTD for a while but there is something about him.
i think liverpool face utd this weekend dont they. which ground?

Well he is there to make sure goals go in, I rate him as an excellent striker, he gets goals for Utd thats the main thing, I know there not the prettiest of goals he scores, but who cares if it gets us points?  ;)

I think the FA Cup game is at Anfield, it should be a good battle.

haha, yah Barcelona all the way. gah i forgot to record the Real Madrid vs. Arsenal game, and  missed it, im sure Real Madrid won. man, did u see Manchester Utd. vs. Liverpool ?, i was a bit surprise and let down that Liverpool were dominating the game and won. whatever, cant wait for tommorows game.
Title: Re: The Official Football Thread (Soccer)
Post by: Gaz on Feb 22, 2006, 08:04 PM
Arsenal beat Madrid 1 - 0, it was a pretty average game to be honest, Madrid couldn't cope well with Arsenal and it cost them. Man U vs Liverpool...well, not much can be said really, Utd didn't play well at all, it's the same old story with Man U these days, they are hot and cold.
Title: Re: The Official Football Thread (Soccer)
Post by: lifter on Feb 23, 2006, 06:55 AM
well good for Arsenal then, didnt think they were gonna pull through. well, Barcelona won  :), 2 - 1. Chelsea's goal was lame though, cause it bounced off that guys knee , from barca. oh well thats all the glory Chelsea had, Barcelona kinda dominated the second half, or after the red card to Chelsea is when they dominated. haha theyre gonna get fuckin destroyed when they play in Spain.

admitedly, it was a good goal, but now we gotta get 3.
haha... we done it before tho. oh yes. when it mattered.......

some turks i didnt know talked to me when i bought a beer in their restaurant after the match. they where really fair losers while i didnt care about the match at all.

meanwhile in dresden and leipzig, german nazis destroyed turkish restaurants.

wow. that was one of the most stupid posts i've ever read here.
if you thought that i would think all germans are nazis and all turks are fair losers, then sorry.

Nah man, I fell out of love with the game many many years ago.

I got respect for the hardcore though. My friend supports Gillingham and he's a die hard. Home and away every game.

I know a couple Pompey and Norwich supporters too who are the same. True fans, you know? I respect that love for the game.

It's just missing something for me. Motorsport makes my dick hard though.

Witsel may not play before 23 November 2009 atm ... Wasyl will be back, if he can .. , not before next year. During the same match, Jan Polak  ( Czech International player) was also injured by a Standard's player and is out for 6 month (ligaments).

Marcin Wasilewski will not be back for a year. Axel Witsel apologized on the conference after the match, his Polish team also put in doubt his presence for the european qualifying matches for next world cup in 2010, he was also fined 2,500 euros ($3,590) and received emailed death threats, which the police are taking seriously, according to Belgian media.  >:( fucker should be hanged and killed.

I feel sorry for both the people involved, the guy who made the tackle had no intentions of injuring the other guy and was obviously really upset about it. Sucks for such a young and talented player to be so severely injured too, definitely career threatening.

So who do you guys like, looking ahead to the World Cup? I personally think this is The Netherlands year. They are definitely one of the deepest and most talented teams in the world. I mean you always have your front runners with Spain and Brazil but don't sleep on the Dutch. Robben in a beast and getting into form at the right time. I'm also going to go out on a limb here and say that an African team will make it to at least the quarterfinals. There are too many talented African teams, and it seems that hosting always provides some sort of intangible edge.

Make your predictions suckas.

I don't think Sven should be replaced. I hope he wins it for us and can then rub it in the FA's faces. Stuart Pearce would be good though.

Stuart Pearce is also a good player and I think he can manage it. England is definitely a top defender and I don't think they will get lost. So, I am just thinking what team will win this World Cup 2010.

It'd be kinda weird to support a team like Barca I'd imagine. No ups and downs really, just ups pretty much. I dunno, it's 'cause my team is Fulham I guess. I just can't imagine getting the same enjoyment from being into a team of superstars I guess.

That's an interesting point. My team plays in the second league in Germany, and being a fan of this club means lots of suffering. There is a fitting quote from the movie Vanilla Sky - "Just remember, the sweet is never as sweet without the sour, and I know the sour"
I can only laugh when spanish media try to make it a big deal that Real Madrid has lost for the first time this season. 0:5 is obviously tough, but at least they play for titles pretty much every season.
Title: Re: The Official Football Thread (Soccer)
Post by: ToneDef on Nov 30, 2010, 09:32 PM
Yeah, the good times are much better when they're not expected. Fulham's Europa League run last season was a total fairytale. And now Spurs fans in the Premier League are having a great time. They're having a great fun, playing great, attacking football. They're no longer a mid table side.

I guess your team is like your own thing, you know? With teams as huge as Barca, Madrid etc they're kind of everyone elses thing too. They're just huge, huge clubs.

Off to Chelsea vs Shakhtar on Wednesday night! Nothing like a Champions League game live. Great atmosphere. I'm actually a Fulham fan but can't be turning down a game of football. They'll field a strong team too, so Hazard and Mata.. Fucking yes!

Most of my friends and my brothers root for two clubs.
I never really got that, but so many people are like that I got used to it;)

Bought my tickets for the away game of my club on the 18th, we really need points points points

Who's your team, man? I don't support two clubs, Just Fulham. I'm only like an hour away from London anyway. There are a few of us at work who support different teams (Fulham, Liverpool, West Ham, Chelsea) so every now and again one of us will grab a few tickets for us all to head up there. So the Chelsea guy got 4 tickets for tomorrow nights game. I'm not a die hard supporter by any means, so it's cool to just head up to London, hang out, and go watch a football match. It's great to see a real European elite game. Looking forward to watching Hazard for the first time. I've been a big fan since he was at Lille and was really excited to see him come to the Premier League. He's a great player and the way Chelsea are using him alongside Mata and Oscar at the moment, just behind Torres, with a license to roam and create, it's gonna be fantastic to watch.

My club is Fortuna Düsseldorf, guess you'll have to google them ;)
its our first season in the first league for 15 years, and we came to stay.

Must say you picked a good Champions League game there last night, goal in 4th minute of overtime?
That 40 meters goal by Oscar was pure masterclass, and this Willian is such a good player its ridiculous, no surprise Chelsea wants him.
Title: Re: The Official Football Thread (Soccer)
Post by: ToneDef on Nov 08, 2012, 10:54 PM
Are they on Fifa? Haha. I'll check them out.

Yeah it was a good game to be there to see, but Chelsea were disappointing. They were very frustrating to watch and found it difficult to maintain possession. Shakhtar were very good at hounding players to win the ball back ala Barca, but I felt Chelsea could have increased the tempo. Hazard was impressive and I was really happy to see him play. I've been a fan of his for a few seasons now. He's getting a lot of recognition this season, now people are aware of him.

Torres goal was right in front of us and Oscars was brilliant, haha. We had a good view of both of those. Oscar played very well at times actually. He got a good reception when he was subbed. Honestly though, we missed the last goal. We left to get the train and then heard it, haha. These things happen!

You're also right in that Willian is great. He was easily the player that impressed me most on the night. Confident, skilled and strong. He'd fit well into the premier league.

Have you ever been to a league game in England?

Not yet, but the plan existed for some time - Good friend of mine is gonna be in London for his practical training from February till November next year so there is a good possibility. How hard is it to get tickets for a "normal" game? not a derby like Arsenal-Chelsea where its probably not possible to get tickets ;)

It's not that hard. It helps if you're a member and stuff, but as long as you're quick it shouldn't be a problem. You'd love it. The game is absolutely huge in this country, as it is anywhere in Europe really. We're blessed with a great league though. You'd love the atmosphere at a league game.

Probably sounds like treason to you, but I don't watch that much Premier League. Sky shows 2 to 3 games per matchday, and when theres a top game I usually watch it, but I definitely focus on my national league, the Bundesliga.

Which is underestimated in England I believe.
Next to La Liga and Premier League its one of the three top leagues in Europe... stadiums are sold out nearly every game, its a very competitive league, lots of chanting in stadiums. And here no sheik or oligarch can come alone and buy players like there no tomorrow ;)

edit: just checked, they're gonna show Aston Villa - Manchester United in the evening, definitely gonna watch that

How did you enjoy the Villa- Utd game?

And how about Ibrahimovic against England? That last goal!!!

You're right about the Bundesliga being underrated here. A lot of English fans aren't too aware of other leagues. Ours is so popular there's less need for the casual fan to look elsewhere. We don't have much German football televised either. La Liga ha its own show though, naturally.

I like to keep up with other leagues/teams/players and whatnot. As I understand it, the Bundesliga is run very well. Way better than the madness of our league. It uses a smart business model. And it popularised the 4-2-3-1 formation. I believe at one point, more or less every team in your league was using it, or some variation of it. We're having more teams here use it now. Chelsea are the most high profile. Man United are using it too, which is funny because he's always, always been old fashioned and been 4-4-2/4-4-1-1.

But yeah, your league is healthy as I understand it and it works well with your national team.

My team lost yesterday, we had so many chances in the first half.. then in the second half one player of the opponent team receives the red card, and what happens?
They score to win the game, and we lose.

But I must say especially with those away games, I have a weird feeling that whenever I quit drinking in my life, this will be the end of football games. Maybe it sounds like I am an alcoholic, but its way more fun to be drunk, be it in the train on our way to the game, or in the stands.. You know what I mean?

The Ibrahimovic goal was definitely something. Such a crazy dude, but he proves hes worth the money.

Happy to see you acknowledge the Bundesliga.
I saw the game of your team yesterday on television.
It was really too bad for you guys. Three goals in ( I believe ) 20 minutes, that was too much in the end. Petric has good instincts, but he needs minutes so maybe Martin Jol should consider putting him in the starting line-up and results will come.

And about this week.... Champions League tomorrow and the day after!! Some interesting games ahead, but I am already looking forward to the knockout stage early next year ;) All three German teams have good chances to get there.

Netherlands, Argentina, France and Germany are top. Brazil aint worth shit, they almost lose this match against Chile and if it wasnt for that Japanese referee they wouldnt have won the first match.

Chile is a difficult opponent and they beat Spain in the group phase. So I'd say if you win against the team that won the European cup two times in a row and also the last world cup you didn't do a lot wrong.
Brazil probably depend too much on Neymar, but to say they "ain't worth shit" is fucking stupid.

Germany played badly today against Algeria, France had some luck themselves to beat Nigeria the way they did and the Netherlands could have easily lost against Mexico. This is a very even world cup.

My picks for the rest of the tournament, winners in bold.

Quarterfinals:

Brazil - Colombia
To me Colombia is the real dark horse of the tournament, playing well and Brazilian players cry too much.

France - Germany
Germany likes it if their opponent doesn't defend with all their players, which France won't.

Netherlands - Costa Rica
Costa Ricans already exceeded everyones expectations, this will be as far as they could get.

Argentina - Belgium
Very even quarterfinal tie, but Argentina hasn't been that convincing so far and I would love to see a Netherlands-Belgium game

Semifinals:

Colombia - Germany
just don't see it for Germany.

Netherlands - Belgium
Duel of neighbours, but I think experience will prevail in this one.

Finals

Colombia - Netherlands

about time for the Dutchies to win

Ok I was right about the first Quarterfinal, but wrong about the second and that one completely messed with my predictions as I thought Colombia would make the Finals.

Now I think Germany is gonna get there, given that Thiago Silva and Neymar will be missing the game for Brazil. Everything else remains the same from my perspective. A Germany-Netherlands Final would be nice, right?

0 drama, 0 suspense

Post by: black coffee on Jul 10, 2014, 01:08 PM
Both Argentina and the Netherlands played so defensively, it didn't seem like either one was trying to win. All they did was rely on their strong defenses, and hope for individual masterclass by Messi, Higuain, Robben or van Persie to score.
Rather boring Semifinals from the spectators view, but its also understandable given how much was at stake.

About the Final, I'd say Germany plays better as a team than Argentina and thats why they're going to win.

Do you mean the Neuer and Higuan situation? It looked pretty violent, and Neuer shouldn't have raised his knee i think. I bet you his explanation is that he's protecting himself, and it is a typical thing for goalies to do.
But let's not forget the shoulder to the head of Kramer, surely that's a penalty too then?

All in all i think Germany deserved the win. They didn't blow any of us away in the final, but they were the best team through the tournament.
Title: Re: The Official Football Thread (Soccer)
Post by: black coffee on Jul 14, 2014, 10:49 AM
Wel this was the Final of the most important tournament in the world, and it was to be expected that Argentina would play defensively and go for counterattacks. So this was really no game to go for a spectacle like the game against Brazil, but to stay focused and prevent penalty shootout at all costs.

Argentina was a strong opponent and they had their chances as well. Still, 4th star for Germany!!!

The world of football is changing, Messi 10 in the United States, haha. With CR7's move to Saudi Arabia, more and more stars are following the same path: Neymar, Sadio Mané, Karim Benzema, and N'Golo Kanté. In sports, money changes everything. Despite all this investment by the Saudis, the English Premier League will continue to be the most competitive and the best by far,. And none of this affects the Champions League either.  Last year was a phenomenal campaign for City, winning it all. Erling Haaland was the missing piece, setting a record for goals in the Premier League in his very first season.

Top 5 goal scorers:
Erling Haaland: 35
Harry Kane: 27
Ivan Toney: 20
Mohamed Salah: 19
Callum Wilson: 17
