The Shining
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (74)
Hellraiser (Clive Barker=Horror)
Nightmare on Elm St.
Friday the 13th
Halloween (multiple of these could be listed. probably the best series)
Phantasm
Psycho
Child's Play
The Ring

The Shining is my favorite

Damn, forgot about Halloween (original). Classic horror.
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: ToneDef on Mar 16, 2006, 10:13 PM
I like the original ones. Cheapo sequels etc are just shit. In fact, most horror is shit. Sci Fi horror is good like Alien etc.

And I think the remake of Texas chainsaw pwns the original.
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: hydroponic82 on Mar 16, 2006, 10:19 PM
man i like the original ...not the whole film though.

i like when they pick up his brother and he starts talking about how they make headcheese and then just pulls a straight razor out , cuts himself and then cuts that fat dude in the wheelchair.

if they wouldve added that in the re make id tottaly agree.

did yall know the original films name was gonna be "headcheese" ?

It's got its moments, but I just dont get those freaks that sit there and watch it every day. Seriously, as a movie its sucks major fucking ass..

The remake though is excellent.

Post by: hydroponic82 on Mar 16, 2006, 10:23 PM
yea Jessica Beil in a wifbeater made the whole film for me  .. they have a new one coming out too called "Origins" or some shit.   Lee Ermy ( the cop) also ruled in the remake .............not as much as Beil in a wifebeater though.

My top horror movies (no order).
The Ring/The Ring Two
The Saw/The Saw Two
The Exorcist
White Noise
The Descent (a very good one)
The Grudge (maybe too american, but somehow good)
And definately, i must mention 'It'. I guess the scariest movie I`ve ever seen. The worst thing is I had to watch it alone in the dark night. Oh my god, that was god damn freaky. That stupid clown..
Old ones..

never did, but I`d like to. I heard all of the The Ring/The Ring 2/The Grudge japanese versions are better. Just because american ones are reworked.
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: fireflyry on Mar 19, 2006, 09:54 AM
They are way better. They also seem to have a real sense of dread and clinical directing compared to the American versions which seem far more dramatic.

Highly recommend you check them out.

Seeing as we're talking horror here, anyone ever see 'Redneck Zombies'? Now that was some scary shit  :D

Definitely Ringu and Dark Water, that was real scary. I prefer psychological horror over gory horror.

You know a bit in a film that made me jump, What Lies Beneath, when she's in the bath, and he pulls her back and her face is all blue and dead and shit. Yeah, that was a nice little bit hehe!

I'm actually reading IT, the book, just now. Great film!

I kinda hate "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" because it's just so disturbing but that's why it's a good horror movie. It actually made me feel something.

And other movies that scared me (I saw these ten years ago, dunno how they'd affect me now):
The Exorcist
Pet Sematary
A Nightmare On Elm Street
The Shining

Also, a newer horror movie that deserves a mention is "The Others". There's no gore, there's no scary images but the tension and suspense just keeps adding which makes it damn scary to watch alone at night.
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: Chrisbo on Mar 23, 2006, 05:47 PM
Yeah, there was a real scary scene in The Others, where the kid is possessed by the old woman ghost or something like that. Shit, it's been a while since I saw that film, I get muddled up. Good twist in that film.

Recommend me some new good horror movies people! I need more :D

I'll recommend these:

The Devil's Rejects
High Tension
Wolf Creek
The Descent

Hmmm, I think I've seen Wolf Creek before but not sure, tell me the plot again! I really want to see The Descent and The Devils Rejects! As for High Tension (good name) give me the gist of thaat too!

Wolf Creek is about those 3 australians backpackers who get stranded in the outback of Australia and then they meet a friendly aussie who offers them a lift. he isnt that friendly though, hehe. ;)

Yea me too.. until you described it I thought it was some sucky ass teen/nudie flick. I HAVE seen it though and I thought it was great... gory and intense all the way through.

For the guys who wanna see The Descent:

It's pretty fucking gruesome man. To be honest it wasn't anything special or at least I don't remember it being anything special, I haven't seen it since it was at the cinema. But yeah it was alright I guess.

Other than Saw I haven't seen a good horror movie in a long time.

Yeah Saw rocked my pants! Really well done! I'm still waiting for the second one to come out on DVD, it's been a while since it was in the cinema, so what's taking so long??? Has anyone seen that new film, what is it again, Hostel? Is it any good or is it shit?

I haven't seen the japanese version either but the re-makes weren't that bad. I was actally scared at some points of The Ring.

Title: Re: Horror
Post by: Jizzlobber on Apr 13, 2006, 09:13 AM
i gave this a lot of thought, and decided to go with..

10. Jeepers Creepers
9. House of 1000 corpses/The devils rejects (counting it as one movie)
8. Texas Chainsaw massacre
7. The Hills have eyes. (remake forthcoming, movie buffs could be sceptical)
6.Halloween
5. Exorcist
4.IT
3.The Wraith
2. Nightmare on Elm street

finally, the most shit scary movie
1. Hellraiser.

i went for that top 5 coz i was young when i watched them and they made me wet the bed, Hellraiser especially. some scary shit

Of course!  You haven't seen it yet?  Definitely worth not only a viewing but adding to your collection.  How about The Legend of Boggy Creek (really B drive-in movie), Uzumaki, Ravenous, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, or maybe The Sentinel (not the babysitter movie but the one about the man that sits in the window).  I'll keep tossing 'til you say stop.  I'm trying to think of a good variety for you.

It's a remake of Two Thousand Maniacs, but I haven't seen either.  That's the only problem with watching all horror all the time, there's so damn much of it I can't keep up!  That's also on my list.  I met a few of the actresses at the convention but they were as of then 'no names'.  Definitely like Robert Englund though.  Seen The Mangler?

I always try to watch the original  first to see how it was supposed to be.  However, from reading about Grudge 2 it seems that they took the story in a different direction intentionally.  Have you seen the original Grudge (Ju-On)?

Scream and Halloween H20 were on TV tonight.

Scream is still an entertaining flick. Stu is awesome. (8.5/10)

H20 is definitely one of the better sequels in the series (the first and second are ofcourse the best). Myers is pretty creepy in this one. (6.5/10)

BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON

QuoteThe next great psycho horror slasher has given a documentary crew exclusive access to his life as he plans his reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo, all the while deconstructing the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for them.

All right, since someone finally posted in here again, I'm dropping a list of current horror films I'm into or have recently watched:

Shaun of the Dead - Cock it!  I can't stop watching this.
Slither - The bitch is hardcore.  Got it for and early Christmas present.  Sweet!
MPD Psycho - Only watched a little of the series a few months ago but have since bought it in its entirety (Miike).  Good weird manga style miniseries.
City of the Living Dead - A Fulci classic with zombies.  Fulci Lives!

Looking forward to Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo's got the goods) and want to check out Black Christmas, although I'm gonna have to watch the first again since it's been so long.  Also, Hostel 2 and Hellboy 2 (Torro again) have got me all excited.  I don't care if you think it's too cliche, Eli Roth is gonna be a legend.

Getting ready to buy tickets to this coming February's Chicago Fangoria horror con.  Doug Mutherfuckin' Bradley will be in attendance, as well as Ken Foree and some other goodies.  As long a Romero and Savini show up again, I'm there.  Okay, that's it, holla back.

okay bitches, post your favorite directors in horror and your favorite movies from that director.

all-time favorite horror director: john carpenter (hands down)
halloween
the thing
in the mouth of madness
the prince of darkness
cigarette burns
vampires
the fog

this man has made some great movies.

two of my other favorites are dario argento (suspiria, profondo rosso) and george romero (the "dead" series + excellent movies like 'martin', 'the crazies' and 'creepshow')

those 3 are definitely the best (or they were atleast).
david cronenberg is also awesome.

of newer horror directors, i have faith in; alexandra aja (hills have eyes remake and high tension), rob zombie (houseof1000corpses, the devil's rejects and halloween remake).

yup.

Dario Argento:    Susperia
                           Tenebrae
                           Phenomena
                           Jenifer

George Romero:  Martin and the Living Dead series

Lucio Fulci: The Beyond
                  City of the Living Dead
                  Zombi 2

Eli Motherfuckin' Roth:  Hostel
                                     Cabin Fever

Takashi Miike: Imprint
                       Audition
                       Ichi the Killer
                       Gozu
                       The Great Yokai War
                       MPD Psycho

Stuart Gordon:   Re-Animator
                           From Beyond
                           Castle Freak
                           Dagon
                           King of Ants
                           Dreams in the Witch House

There are many great horror directors out there, but these are the ones that I'll keep coming back to over and over again.

Vacancy wasn't that bad actually, they only teased with a bit of torture and blood though.  I thought, given the A list actors it was going to be a disappointment, but I liked the story.  It was a bit predictable, and the story wasn't necessarily anything original, however I still enjoyed it.  I'm seriously a hardcore horror fan, I'll watch and usually enjoy everything.  So, maybe I should't be responding.

I watched "house" today

It was allright.

That's a good movie, used to watch it all the time.  Big Ben is creepy.  Too bad the sequels are utter crap.

Quote from: Jerry_Curls on Oct 22, 2007, 08:37 AM
I saw Birds last ngiht for the first time.

It was really scary.

Excellent film, nothing better than a classic.  My favorite part is either when she finds the old man in his bedroom pecked to death or when the birds are waiting outside the school.  Oh hell, I can think of about a dozen other scenes too, Hitchcock will do that to you.

Quote from: theis on Oct 22, 2007, 11:50 AM
yeah freaky movie. those birds are awesome.

i'm pretty obsessed with David Cronenberg nowadays.

he's definitely my favorite horror director. movies like The Brood, Videodrome and The Fly are pure genius.

i'm gonna watch Jaws now.

Cronenberg is a genius no doubt, very dark and visceral.  His newer films are a bit different than what he normally does but if you know his style you can still tell it's a Cronenberg.  Ever seen Naked Lunch?  You know it's a good film when typewriters turn into bugs and grow genitalia.  And Jaws is one of my favorite, one of those films I always catch on tv and can't stop watching.

The Happening WILL suck.

For anyone who think it looks cool, read this "twist" if you want to save some money:  From an early review -

It’s plants that are responsible. They’ve decided to wipe out humanity and release the neuro-toxin as their natural weapon…. it’s very, very hard to menacingly cut to an evil-looking tree. That doesn’t stop him from trying, though, and he inexplicably adds wind as a way of livening up the scenes. When the leaves of a tree start to blow, evil’s afoot. It’s really, really hard not to laugh at and there’s even a real groaner of a gag-scene wherein Wahlberg timidly apologizes to a houseplant only to find that it’s made of rubber. Really.

FUCKING PLANTS!!!

Pretty good for a Vampire flick and I've always been a fan of horror films like The Thing and Dawn of the Dead that use isolation as a theme.

Swank is the brother of the director, the queen is the director's wife (I think, might be wrong but they presented it as such), and the baby is Swank's son, so the nephew.

i agree that i adore the guy as a director, but still, the series should've just ended with that disastrous 3rd movie.

and you know in Hollywood everything goes in 3's, so does this mean we'll see a Spider-Man 6??
if so, we won't see any new Evil Dead from Raimi in like a decade

New french horror movie.

A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity

I wanna see this soooo fucking bad. judging from the reviews, it's one sick and disturbing flick. people are calling it this years Inside...only more fucked up. dayum. The french are some crazy mofos.

Some outtakes from some reviews:

"
Martyrs' truly is a monster. It's a ground breaking, brave, stunning, brutal & moving piece of work that is guaranteed to divide audiences everywhere it gets the chance to play. Even at a genre event like Frightfest the audience reaction ranged from 'loved it' to 'hated it' to people actually going outside of the cinema to be physically sick (really). For me it was the highlight of the festival and i absolutely loved it but I don't believe it's a movie that anybody will truly 'enjoy'.
"

"The last thirty minutes of the film held the audience in almost complete silence. The lack of any crowd reaction, aside from the revelation of what happened to Anna in her final stage, was due to the harrowing endurance test they and Anna (played by Morjana Alaoui) went through. The film turned from a highly engaging gore flick into a sad and rather depressing reflection of human suffering."

"It took an entire 24 hours for the movie to sink in and really left a dent in this reviewer's psyche. After it was all said and done MARTYRS is really quite an exquisite experience - it's so incredibly rare when a horror film is so engaging that it can feel as if you're right there with the protagonist. The only negative thing about Laugier's film is that once you see it, you'll never be able to see it for the first time ever again..."

Unrated trailer:

it hits DVD January 2009!

you've seen Inside, man? it's another Frech horror. it's i-n-s-a-n-e!

probably the most fucked up flick i've ever seen and also one of the best horrors i've seen in a long time.

it's in the same vein as Haute Tension (High Tension). eg. stranger invading house. check it out if you haven't.

ps: dont rent it. blockbuster's only got the CUT version.
Title: Re: Horror

i didn't like high tension. i thought the whole big twist at the end has been done so many times, and better, by that time.
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: theis on Dec 02, 2008, 01:16 AM
i don't usually like twists like that, but it really worked in High Tension. I think...

Certainly made my jaw drop.

anyways, i can't recommend Inside enough. especially if you're a horror fan.

I've seen a couple of horror movies lately

A house of a 1000 corpses - I liked this. its was very sadistic, but the effects were good and it was actually realistic in my perspective. the old fables and making them come true

Some Zombie thing ( land of the living dead?) - I  watched half of it then jsut stopped so boring. I guess i liek the more humn murderer things more

Psycho 1 (colour) /2 - I liek psycho 2 the only serious role . ive seen vince vaugn in . I'm pretty sure the original wouldve ben better and no frickin clue why they didn't have it. Pyscho 2 was Shiiiiiit. It didn't make any sense. He ocmes back and hes not a murderer his mother is and then his GF gets done for murdering them and her mother. and then he kills his RL mother its Shiiit

NEVER EVER WATCH IT! OR LAND OF THE LIVING DEAD!

The Last Winter starring Ron Perlman. I liked in a weird way that I didn't really get it upon the first viewing. it's a different type of horror, I'll say that; i gotta see it again

Thoughts?

I enjoyed his revisioning the first time around, and I'm interested in seeing how he follows it up.

i liked the original Halloween. I like Rob Zombie movies. i liked his remake of Halloween.

But do we really need a sequel to a remake?
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: blankpagespeaks on Jan 07, 2009, 04:56 AM
The original Halloween is my all-time favorite horror film.

I'm kinda surprised that Zombie is making a sequel to his revision; I have my doubts about it, but then again, I also had them when I first found out he was doing the first one, and I enjoyed it.

I just wonder if he'll base it on the original sequel, with us following Laurie to the hospital.  I liked how the original two films were set on the same night like that.  It made it all flow as one story, a story which to me ends after Halloween 2.

practically everything. it's supposed to be a shocking story, but with that atrocious acting and awful soundtrack...well, it was impossible for me to find it somewhat disturbing.

that link works thanks. it does look good. but i still love the original. when i first saw it i found it very shocking. torturing the chicks making them dyke out and piss them selves and then later the mom biting the ones dick off.  considering it was one of craven's first movies probably not a big budget i thought it was good.

So far we've just been getting a feel for things.  First day and all.  Sat next to Caroline Williams (Stretch from TCM 2) and bullshitted for a bit; it was nice.  Tom Savini put on a weird mask that made him look like a big black guy and snuck up on people to scare the shit out of them. Funny as Hell.  Here's a random pic of Herschell Gordon Lewis and Lloyd Kaufman hugging lol.  I'll update again.

Here's the few that I got.  I feel odd trying to constantly snap shots of everyone.  It's as though we are all fans and these were the ones that were talented or lucky enough to contribute to the genre.   It's for that same reason that I don't yell out anyone's name as they pass when friends don't notice them.

My prized item from the convention is this book:

Hadn't watched this in some years, so I watched it last night.

Still one of the best remakes. The first attack sequence in the trailer is just relentless and brutal.

nope. I'm actually looking forward to seeing it after I see District 9 and Inglourious Basterds. and yes, I know I normally hate remakes, let alone a sequel to a remake.
But I have been convinced that it at least should be worth seeing just because it's Rob Zombie, and I've loved his previous 3 movies.
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: theis on Aug 04, 2009, 10:35 AM
I wasn't a big fan of Rob's Halloween remake. What annoyed me the most was that he gave Myers a motive. His parents were lowlife redneck scumbags who didn't give a shit about him (except for his stripper mom, yay). What I loved about the original Halloween was the fact that Myers was 100% evil. No reason behind it...he just *was*.

Ah well, this sequel still looks like it could be fun.
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: bright lights, big city on Aug 04, 2009, 01:18 PM
I did find myself enjoying the remake, partly because of the addition of that backstory with his family. It was like Zombie's own spin on the story, and I thought that was alright. But you are correct as to why he was cool 30 years ago.

Title: Re: Horror
Post by: oldgentlovecraft on Sep 30, 2009, 03:40 AM
I like the actor in The Stepfather (the guy from Nip/Tuck, my guilty pleasure), but I'm not sure about Saw VI. The original Stepfather was excellent, but these constant remakes are making me weary, and I love nearly everything horror! Zombieland looks pretty damn good and Romero's new one is getting close (maybe next year, who knows). We've suddenly taken a sharp turn back to the typical, Hollywood fodder.  It's fun to watch, but not much more.  I'll stick to my collection for now.
Title: Re: Horror
Post by: bright lights, big city on Sep 30, 2009, 04:28 AM
They'll all suck, I'm sure. The only one I have any hope for is Zombieland, honestly. But for some reason I have a vibe that it's going to suck. I really think all the movies I'm anticipating for the rest of the year aren't horror at all. Kind of sad actually.

haha it's no surprise, slasher films are the first to be whored out for money.  Friday the 13th remake last year, Nightmare on Elm Street remake in April...that putrid sequel to Rob Zombie's boner Halloween.  Scream 4 starting shooting soon.  The slasher is seriously in a state of extreme decline...thankfully, we can now get some more plot-driven horrors!

edit: and trust me, I like the occasional slasher.  But it's getting more and more ridiculous and more and more tame.

from http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2009/11/evil-dead-to-rise-again-in-2010.html

EVIL DEAD TO RISE AGAIN IN THEATERS IN 2010

Before there was Spider-Man, Sam Raimi began his multi-billion dollar career with little more than $375,000 and a script for a schlocky X-rated horror film. But when Evil Dead was released in 1981, its gore and wit garnered it a cult following, amassing box office earnings of $2.4 million in the U.S. and over $29 million worldwide. Its success led to several sequels, a stage musical, and cult fame for its writer-director and its star, Bruce Campbell.

Now, 28 years later, Raimi, Campbell and producer Robert Tapert plan to re-release the film in theaters. In 2010, the creators and Grindhouse Pictures will offer midnight showings of the cult classic at select Landmark theaters in the U.S., Mayfair Cinema in Canada, and more venues will be announced after the first of the year.

The always unconventional Campbell has this to say about the release: "Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead — especially on the big screen. I'm really glad it's back. People are gonna be hurt."

Bring on the pain.

FUCK YES!

i love rob zombie's movies so much! i watched this a few days ago and i thought it was so gutsy showing michael myers face. top notch beard. i love the fact that there are no heroes in zombie's movies. if you get caught by the bad guy, you are fucked. you can't escape and you will die. i hate movies where someone gets away alive. that rarely happens when a psychotic murderer has got you.

i agree. it's blasphemy for him to make a movie and not put his wife in it though hahaha. i thought her character was useless in the movie. she fit in good in the first but it's like, leave it alone, robert! i like his vulgar script writing. like in the beginning when the ambulance driver is joking about fucking laurie's friends corpse, it was confronting but it worked and i found myself enjoying that exchange between the two men before, well, you know what happens to them.

but like i said, i was a bit split about michael's face being shown. it came off as a bit sacrilegious at first. i also think zombie should have taped scenes for the second movie with daeg faerch as the younger michael while he was shooting the first one because the new younger michael wasn't as effective as the previous. daeg scared the crap out of me. granted zombie probably hadn't written the script for the second one. it didn't affect the movie so much.

I think there's more realism, as far as portraying Michael as a serial killer. The first was great and gave psychological insight that made the film a bit creepier than the original. I'm a huge Zombie fan anyway, but the classics are still untouchable imo.

it may sound fucked up but i found a sense of humanity in zombie's michael. i loved the first one too. i'm a big fan of william forsythe and it was huge for me that he was in it. bill moseley as otis, i mean, that right there is the sexiest serial killer you're ever going to get. zombie achieved that hahaha

I'm a big zombie fan. he's so well spoken and he knows his horror history. very smart man. i like the fact that he's not into trilogy's. i think that's what really killed saw for me. having three saw's was enough, but they've completely ruined the essence of the plot by making so many. i still believe the first saw was the best. they should've left it at that.

the only reason they're remaking it is so that Americans don't have to put up with those damn foreigners ;)

yeah this is really unnecessary. but not nearly as ridiculously unnecessary as that Death At A Funeral remake where it was remade a year later, in the same language, just with black people instead of British.

Or what about the same director remaking his own movie except that it's in English like Funny Games.

The remake is just to bank off the whole vampire teen craze that's going on.

Just watched  The House of the Devil.

One of the best horror movies I've seen in ages. Truly creepy.

Also, going to watch this tonight.

Was waiting for your comment, Theis. The original was flawless.

Last night I watched: The Burning (fun 80's slasher with gore effects done by the master Tom Savini) and Psycho II (albeit a bit silly, this was a surprisingly great sequel).

Gave it a watch, it was decent. Good acting, good plot... But I thought that the climax was a bit short. Still quite good, reminded me somewhat of Rosemary's Baby.
