OSI - Blood
Genre: Progressive Metal

OSI or Office of Strategic Influence is the superband led by Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos and ex Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore. The act is more of a side project where both get together and melt in the pot their style into the already trademark sound this band owns. Incisive Metal riffing and vast electronic backgrounds in an obscure atmosphere is what we hear from this band. The peculiar voice from Moore is also key to the group's original sound.

Blood is their 3rd full album. Difference with the previous is the presence of Porcupine Tree's Gavin Harrison, as in all the other Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy took the role. The song Stockholm also features Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt voice.

insanely awesome one man instrumental "percussive, poly rhythmic progressive metal" band. i would compare his stuff  to a more melodic mastodon or messugah. all his music is available to download for free from his myspace page.

i've always found Isis pretty proggy but the whole progressive genre is too wide to really define. it's all just personal opinion. and the amount of sub-genres for prog rock is insane. my personal top prog band would be porcupine tree and i know nobody will agree with me but i find coheed and cambria quite progressive. but yeah. almost any outside the lines music these days can be prog.

King fuckin' Crimson!

What's the best King Crimson album to start with?

I'm only about a minute into "The Escape Artist" by OSI and I'm digging this so far.

"In the court of the crimson king". No doubt about it.

this is what everyone usually says, as a matter of fact 90% of my friends who say they LOVE KC only own this album. They're sound has changed so much over time, I'd actually suggest checking out:

Red [1974]
Discipline [1981]
The Power to Believe [2003]

Slacker

the human experimente is gonna be epic

do you like Can?  Do you like when the Mars Volta jams out?   Check this out.

This band is amazing. Tosin Abasi has got some skills.

Periphery is also a pretty cool prog metal band (bordering the extreme) that I discovered together with Animals As Leaders. I'm just bummed that they chose to go with an emo-sounding vocalist. Still, the instrumental version of their S/T is great. If not for it, I'd probably not be listening to them. I'm a fan of Meshuggah, so the heavy use of polyrhythms is very welcome.

Anathema are amazing.
