Granted it's not their fault for it being unoriginal or formulaic.  I thought both Leo's acting and Marty's directing were both absolutely top notch.  It was just maybe not the best story for him to direct.  I absolutely loved the dream sequences.

Anyone else think that Mark Ruffalo did an astounding job in this movie?  I mean Leo and Marty deserve cred but I feel like Mark gave an underrated performance.  I wouldn't mind watching the movie again and focusing more on his character.

Mark Ruffalo is fantastic. I've always been a big fan of him. He was great in Shutter Island, very subtle role.

Damn, I can't get this movie out of my head.

This film may be a good reason for me to finally drag my ass to the cinema.

Yeah.  As "simple" as the movie is, it had a lot going on.  It's one of those movies that will probably get better with more viewings.  I saw it Saturday and last night I had a long talk with three other people about the movie.  It's been awhile since I've seen a movie where I'm talking about the movie multiple days after seeing it.

i heard it just sucked

You heard wrong.

It's a masterpiece.

definitely not a masterpiece.  the departed was a masterpiece.  this is a pretty good movie.

i drink your milkshake

one weak

neither are masterpieces compared to anything Scorcese did early in his career

ben

I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece, especially when I called the twist.  When the same director has made films like Raging   WHICH by the way I thought was done quite well.  I liked it.

Interesting note:  I got to sit in the "crying room" with my two friends, which was badass.  We were able to talk and goof off without any consequences.

anyways, what is your top five scorsese films?  here's mine

5. Goodfellas
4. After Hours
3. Casino
2. Taxi Driver
1. Raging Bull

theis

1. RAGING BULL (greatest performance ever by any actor. Good ol' Bobby D)
2. Taxi Driver (one of the first "classics" I ever watched. Changed my whole view on movies)
3. Mean Streets
4. Goodfellas/The King of Comedy (tie. TKOC is one of the most underrated movies ever)
5. Shutter Island

My opinion may change on Shutter Island after some time, but I'm pretty awe-struck by it at the moment. I've been finding some of the scenes from it on the net and it's fascinating how almost every piece of dialogue has something to do with the "twist". Such incredible detail. Can't wait to watch it again.

Scorsese never made a bad movie.

defskull

Yeah exactly.

SPOILERS

The twist of him being a patient there is pretty weak.  But why he is there and how everyone is trying to help him see that he is in fact a patient there is pretty great.

One of my favorite things I noticed afterward is the fact that Mark Ruffalo has problems taking his gun out of it's holster when he first gets on the island.  I thought it was odd that so much time was spent on that, but it makes sense now.  It's because he was never a US Marshall.  He's never done anything like that.  Great great attention to detail.  Little things like that make the movie so much better than what some might claim it to be.

Haha, I'm getting goosebumps from just reading that. Well spotted!

Anyone else thought Michelle Williams did a brilliant job?

Such a subtle and creepy performance. The way she just wanders back and forth on the porch while Leo's in the water with the dead kids. Shit, it gave me chills.

Yea that was pretty disturbing, a long with the snow/holocaust scene.  The visuals are amazing.

I watched Kundun lastnight, that's another Scorsese film where he goes out of his staple elements and gives us great shots.  I suggest checking it out...though it really pisses me off the people speak in english instead of it being subtitled.

That's the only Scorsese movie I haven't seen yet. Gotta get on that.

i liked the movie, i kinda want to see it again to make my final judgment because i too called the plot twist right when they were like "but records say there's 66 patients here" or whatever and essentially spent the rest of the movie being like "goddammit if he's #67 i'm gonna be kind of pissed."  But I did really like how at the end he decided to get lobotomized even though their treatment worked, I thought that was a great plot element.

From what I've read from reviews, and I agree with this, is I think Scorcesse almost wanted the audience to know the twist long before the reveal.  It helps you become one with the character.  Because you're thinking "there's no way that's the twist" and so you're becoming convinced just as Leo is that there is a huge conspiracy going on.  I mean I thought him being a patient was the obvious twist to have to I kept convincing myself that that wasn't the twist and that he was really catching on to a big government conspiracy.

When it's revealed that he's a patient we're thinking the same thing Leo is thinking.  "No way. There is no way he's a patient.  We've come all this way to find out he's a patient?" I think it's really great.
