Just saw that yesterday, and LOVED every second of it !
Awesome, awesome movie, really...

I'm curious about what you guys think though : does he really falls back into madness at the end ? Or he just "plays" it in order to get lobotomized, cause he doesn't want to live with the truth ?

BTW, my first idea was a relapse, but after second thinking it, with his sentence "is it better to live as a monster, or die as a good man", I'm more oriented towards the faking madness hypothesis now.

Saw it the other night.

It sucked.  I was very disappointed at how bland and dry the whole story was.  I could already tell about halfway into the movie that he was going to end up being a patient there.  So there was no twist for me.

I loved Scorcese's other movies like Taxi Driver, Casino and Goodfellas but this movie was awful.

I guess the story flew over your head.

This was so much more than "him just being the patient".

Seriously.  Determining whether or not the movie is good based on whether or not you knew what the twist is is stupid.  I guess Goodfellas was good because of the twist ending of Ray Liotta becoming a part of the Witness Protection program?

Shutter Island is so much more than a twist and it cheapens the movie if that's all you think it is.  It was outright obvious he was a patient there.  Before the movie even came out my girlfriend was saying he was a patient there.  I think it's supposed to be obvious to the viewer.  That way when Leo (and the viewer) finds out that he is a patient there, the character and audience don't believe it.  The audience can't believe it not because it's shocking, but because the entire time you're thinking "nah, he can't be a patient there, that'd be too obvious" and then they go that route anyway.  Now the audience and character are both in denial.  Leo and the viewer are thinking "this can't be".  There HAS to be something more than him just being a patient.

At least that's how I felt.  Having such a simple twist seems pointless, but it really isn't.  I mean in the end Leo and the viewer both would rather it be that his conspiracies were real. His pretend life and our pretend perception of what's real and what isn't are so much better than what reality is.  That's why he chooses to be lobotomized.  He'd rather have the good memories than live the rest of his life knowing the terrible truth.

My dad was with me, he wanted to get up and leave halfway into the movie.  Just cuz you like Scorcese doesn't mean you have to swallow everything he feeds you.  If you liked it, great! I didn't.  Maybe one day I'll see it again and finally "get it".  Maybe not.

Oh, and Goodfellas was good because it was a true gangster flick.  That whole lifestyle, the money, respect..very real so...no need to insult my intelligence.

Everyone has their own opinions and perceptions.

I'm not saying everything he does is great.  I'm just saying that determining the movie as good or not just based on whether or not the twist is expected lame.  Sure you would like there to be a good twist but don't forget the rest of the movie that came before it.

Hidalgo

this was more like a M Night Shyamalan movie than Scorsese. it was good, but it wasn't his usual style of movie, not at all. not brilliant like good fellas, gangs of new york, the aviator, etc. stll this was a solid flick

Hidalgo

1. the aviator (so underrated, it's awesome. tons of good 1 liners from howard hughes, lol)
2. good fellas
3. gangs of new york
4. the color of money
5. cape fear

"and tell Jimmy i want 10 chocolate chip cookies, aright, medium chips, none too close to the outside. got it?"

Awesome, man.

I watched it for the second time some days and it still gave me chills. Especially the "cabin scene".

lostpilot

I'm pretty sure I'll be watching this again after some time.
It's weird how I enjoyed the fuck out of DiCaprio. He was kinda dead to me, but totally aced this movie.

I loved it and saw it twice. But to each his own, Sam.

Scorsese could film himself taking a shit and i would still watch it and love it. ;D :D

Watching it again.. at the end when he says "what would be worse.. to live as a monster or to die as a hero" or something like that. First time i noticed he might not actually have reverted, just he wants it to end. Can't be sure.

I realize i'm answering an age-old post, but i'm totally with you on that one. He's one of the greatest actors out there at the moment.

As for the movie, I really like it. Watched it two times in two days. It was awesome watching it a second time, and noticing all the details that are so obvious when you know what's really going on.

I think it's pretty obvious that he wants to be lobotomized. Otherwise he wouldn't have said that.

although not knowing anything at all the first time through a movie is great, I really think I enjoyed Shutter Island even more the second time through
