Since I'm not technologically skilled, I think someone should make one of those animated gif's of Chino and Abe both putting their heads on their hands at the same time in the Lux interview.  I think that would be pretty funny.

MX is definitely underrated.

MX is amazing, one of the most perfect deftones songs in my opinion. It's a perfect blend of violent and sexual. I wish they would start playing it live again.

this list sucks.

Ha ha yeah completely. Digital Bath, Feiticeira, Head up, Engine n9 ? Oh yeah, these are underrated...

I was expecting to see songs like  Good Morning Beautiful, Battle-Axe, Street Carp, Rapture...Mx is a good example though.
"When I show up, it's all good" Chino Moreno

Honestly though, they could have put any songs on there and you all would bitch.  You're snobs... that's what you do.

you're late. saw it.

good stuff.

I never thought so, but now I'm like Steph, you gotta play some solos and shit. channel your inner 80's ratt, ozzy influences and just do it. you've been playing for 30 years, anybody could by accident at that point.

actually he has popped out a little lead on some early stuff. ANSWERS from 1992. and here and there live.
I'm bringing it in with style myself you know it is with ease no sweat

Nah I'm glad he chooses not to do that stuff, there's no doubt he could it if he wanted but I hate solo's they don't usually add anything to the song it's just like a bit of self indulgence for the guitarist, it's like the song basically goes on hold so the guitarist can show off. I wouldn't be a fan of Deftones if Stef was like that because one of the things that attracted me to the band in the first place was how Stef,Abe,Chi and Frank never seemed like they were fighting to be louder than each other instead they wrote with really great awareness of what the others were doing and they just complimented each other giving the song a super great atmoshpere. It's sort of like the saying "the sum of the parts is not equal to the whole" meaning it's not what each one of them is doing technically that makes them good it's the way they merge together.

it's how you execute the solo, though... it's one thing if you can tell it's obviously just been thrown into the song and had already been preconceived that the song would have a solo, you know, like when a band is playing live and they do the cheesy: "and here's dave on guitar!!"

however, there's nothing wrong with having lead guitar, or a solo, if it's done right. if it doesn't feel forced... it has to be natural... and shit, bands like Animals As Leaders... every song is a solo practically, and it's fucking incredible! but then again i guess the focus in that band is the guitar, anyway... and there's obviously plenty of examples... i'm just throwin shit out there... but don't be so narrow minded about guitar solos, man! i agree it doesn't necessarily fit deftones as far as what we've heard thus far, but they could easily pull it off by changing the song structures or just the whole vibe of the song. i would love to hear that, actually...

Honestly, would be interesting, Deftones - Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd Cover) sounds great, one of my favorites songs.

DeftonesNZ

Yeah I like AAL and lot's of post rock instrumental stuff which is basically one big solo and I don't mind it in that context but with deftones I think instead of having solos to mix it up  they have those real quiet eriee moments, I really like that style it's nice to sort off slow everything down it makes those heavy breakdowns they have at the end more intense. For instance in Bloody Cape there's that one section where it's basically just Chino whispering and Stef playing lightly and it makes that breakdown afterwards feel so much more brutal, I love how they do that. I'm not fully against solos in a non instrumental context either but I'm pretty picky, Adam Jones style of solos are what I look for, when he plays a solo it really adds to the song but it just seems the majority of the time I listen to songs with solos it feels like song is paused for it and the solo is sort of cut and pasted in. also that's not Stef doing the Simple Man solo

people are people

Yeah Adam Jones is not known for predominately using any particular guitar playing technique, but rather combines many techniques such as alternately utilizing power chords, scratchy noise, chiming arpeggios, and a quiet minimalism, who plays the solo on Simple Man? Even if that is not my point what I mean is that combines with the deftones style if they want it, I love the solo on Simple Man like i love the solo on "Deftones - Please, please, please, let me get what I want" and would be interesting hear more in this style.

DeftonesNZ

Yeah the thing with Adam is his solos are based of the other riffs in the songs so he will often play the same frets he was playing powerchords on earlier but on an individual strings and rearranged. Also think it was Joe Fraulob on the Simple Man cover, when ever I hear "please, please, please let me get what I want" I can't help but wish they had covered a different Smiths song, for starters it's really short snd there's just some songs I think would have been better, I would like to hear them cover "How soon is now?". same goes for "if only tonight we could sleep" I think that was a really poor choie there's a ton of Cure songs I think would have been better, would of been cool if they covered pretty much anything from Pornography,Disintengration or 17 seconds. It would have been awesome to hear Chino singing something "The figurehead" or "Fascination Street"

deftoolsys07

who knows, maybe the next album will have a solo... we got entombed on the last record which was the first deftones song with fingertapping. albeit pretty slow and repetitive, but sonically satisfying nonetheless....
