I can't pick one over the other, different styles, equally brilliant.  Both of them are musical genius's.

I can't fucking stand Maynard's voice anymore. Tool = great musicians, annoying-as-fuck-leadsinger.

Trent all the way.

Sushi-X

Trent all the way for me also. Besides Trent has a mother fucking Oscar! All Maynard has is a wine vineyard.

I must say, you both have very good points.  And I forgot to include as well Trent is always sooo cool to his fans and always has been.  His fame never went to his head and he is still so humble and down to earth.  Me being a woman, his music is more emotional.. "Something I could never Have" is just one of my favs, and almost always makes me cry when I hear it.  especially that awesome live performance from their DVD.  Maynard, is kind of a dick to his fans, has never shown much appreciation.  However, Watching his new DVD "Water into Wine" which is mostly about his wine making business, but seeing the interviews and his commentary gave me a much more I don't know what the word is, introspecitve? opinion of him.   I used to think he was very stuck up and arrogant and thought he was too good for everyone, that is how he comes off, with hardly ever doing interviews and staying out of the public eye, but I don't think that is the case.  What I came away with was that he feels like he is a just a human being who makes good music and can't understand why people could possible worship the ground he walks on and think he is so great.  It was interesting to watch Tool fans, in line to meet Maynard, but Maynard did not want to talk about Tool at all just the wine.  Of course, most the Tool fans were freaking out behind the scenes, but understood how Maynard is, and kept their composure in front of him, while he signed their wine bottles and then freaked out afterwards.  If there are any Tool fans out there who haven't seen the DVD "Blood into Wine" I would recommend gettting it.  There are some awesome interviews on their with Maynard where he also talks about evolving as a musician.   So I guess after some thought, my vote would have to go to Trent as well.

They both make incredible music and they both bother me.

well seeing as the question is who is the more brilliant writer, i would definitely have to say Trent Reznor since he writes all of the music for NIN as well as the lyrics. As far as I know Maynard doesn't write any music aside from his vocals in Tool, he might make the music for Puscifer I don't know. But i voted Trent.

Cool, I think you are right. I think Maynard only writes the lyrics. Trent knows how to play almost every instrument and can write a part for each of them.

Now that I think about it. What was up with Trent's emo hair back in the early With Teeth-era

Sobriety....that's what was up. I LOATHED his hair like that. Aack.

They are both great in their own respective ways and even though I tend to enjoy Tool and APC a little more, Trent Reznor is just one of the most innovative musicians in the world which gets my vote.

Trent Reznor. I personally think Maynard is slightly over-rated though still more talented than most

Robotsatemygrandma

Fawk Tool. Never understood why people have such a hard on for them.

Was never really a fan of NIN either, but Downward Spiral is a pretty album.

I like APC. I could listen to Mer de Noms for weeks.

Trent is a solid songwriter so he gets my respect. Maynard, IMO is an over rated vocalist. I heard an interview of his on the radio a few months ago, the pretentious arrogance that man projected was insulting and baffling. I was laughing at the awkward silences between questions. The radio guys were trying SOOOO hard to carry on a conversation and he was not having it.

So Trent wins.
