Post bands and artists that influence Deftones based on statements made by the guys themselves in the past or present. Perhaps you may recall these bands or artists from mentions within interviews, twitter posts, personal blog playlists, etc. Of course each are unique to each member in the band, but I think it's interesting to know what kind of musicians inspire the band we all love so much. The intention of this thread is to not only expose their favorite artist's, but to also discuss similar connections found within their own music, potentially from their inspiration by these artists( if you desire to delve that far, of course).

Just to name a few:

The Cure

Prince

Depeche Mode

Bad Brains

Duran Duran

The Smiths

Weezer

Meshugga

M83

Fugazi

Helmet

Morrissey

In regards to the Cure, I think the dark lyrical content of Robert Smith reminds me a lot of Chino's lyrics, the imagery, the abstract and ambiguous contexts, yet still based on simple things like women, love, sex, past memories, close relationships etc. The Cure's reverberated and ambient guitars remind me of the spacey guitar riffs the deftones write (i.e. Rosemary , Konomi Code, Beauty School, just off the top of my head). Although the drummer from The Cure is kinda reserved and basic with his playing, I hear some technique similar to Abe's drumming style.

As far as Prince goes, I'm not too sure why the guys of the Tone's have such a huge hard on for him.. Maybe his iconic figure during the 80's? The melodic and experimental nature of his vocals?

Would love to hear your opinion's about these artists and others!

Hum
Accordingly to Chino Deftones got their "tone" from Hum... and i completely agree
Hum - Stars

Tech N9ne
I read somewhere that Stef was really into Tech 9 stuff while recording Diamond Eyes. Maybe he wrote some guitar riffs while jamming and listening to Tech n9ne.
Tech N9ne - Be Warned

Sade
Chino said it was a big inspiration for him. Not sure about how Sade influenced him... maybe in the the singing style.
SADE - SMOOTH OPERATOR

Bohren & Der Club Of Gore
Eros influence?... who knows
Bohren & Der Club Of Gore - Midnight Walker

Blue Moods Of Spain
I think this song inspired Digital Bath
Blue Moods Of Spain - Untitled #1

Cocteau Twins
You can say whatever you want but to me this song was a big inspiration for Sextape.
Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins

Gee

Yeah good thread !

I'm not familiar with all the bands listed in the first post, but knowing Depeche Mode very well I think the influence on a large number of atmospheres and in Chino's singing is obvious :

Depeche Mode - The Love Thieves

depeche mode - the love thieves (1997)

Deftones - Digital Bath

Deftones- Digital Bath (with lyrics)

It gets even more obvious with these :

Depeche Mode - Waiting for the night

Depeche Mode - Waiting for the Night

Deftones - Lucky You

Deftones - Lucky you

And yeah of course, the 'tones covered "To have and to hold" from Music for the masses :

Depeche Mode's version

DEPECHE MODE - TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

Deftones' version

Deftones - To Have And To Hold (Studio Version)

They also covered The Sweetest Perfection from Violator but the sound quality sucks.
"When I show up, it's all good" Chino Moreno

I feel like these two songs have some sort of connection. The noisiness, the way Chino sings like Belinda Butcher during the verse/spoken word/the outro in the MBV track reminds me of Chino's guitar playing...I don't know..something about these songs connect. Like the noise that Frank plays is very mind boggling similar to the noise Kevin Shields is playing during the chorus. The cover of SNW is totally inspired by MBV's EP cover. :-)

Found this video on this forum a while back, an interview with Chino back in 07'. At 8 mins in he starts talking about elements of music that drives his interests... around 9:10 he mentions M83 and what about the band that inspires him musically and emotionally.

The most candid interview of Chino I think.

This song by the Cure, to me personally, reminds me alot of similar sounds and dynamics found on Saturday Night Wrist, A bit of Diamond Eyes, and White Pony.

smashing pumpkins definitely were a huge influence on their guitar playing and morrisey on chinos vocals

I remember Chino saying somewhere that he was fan of Bjork. I can relate his singing to hers anyway.

DeftonesNZ

Have too be careful calling all these influences saw an interview once where the interviewer was asking chino about some of these bands like Radiohead an Chino said to him just because they like and listen to a band it doesn't automatically mean it influences them, sometimes their just fans.

Well, based on the new Guitar World interview with Steph that has been posted recently, we can for sure say that Animals as Leaders' Tosin Abasi has inspired Steph's guitar work on the new track Entombed on KNY.
