I just can't get past how Weiland sounds exactly like Eddie Vedder, and Scott Stapp by extension.

I hear this all the time and I don't think it's a very fair comparison. For one, yes he sounds kind of like Eddie on the first album. He then changed his vocal style completely and have alternated between different styles on different songs and albums. He has an amazing range and he can do very different styles with his voice. As for Scott Stap, yeah he ripped his vocals from the first STP album. I don't see how that reflects poorly on STP.

Well, I've only heard things from their debut. That's probably the case for a lot of people, I'd guess. What are some other songs of theirs that you'd recommend? I'm always down to hear music that I haven't yet, and it seems like you're a big fan of the band. I'd be more than willing to give them another chance.

As for the Scott Stapp thing, no, of course that doesn't reflect poorly on the band. I just have that association in the back of my mind when I hear STP, sort of prevents me from enjoying it as much as I might otherwise. I know that's a little ridiculous, but what can I say?

I could definitely see myself getting in to their music, though. It's probably just a matter of hearing the right stuff. I actually didn't like Deftones when I first heard them, but I was interested in their stuff and kept coming back to it until it clicked for me. Now I'm registered here, and they're my favorite band. I get the feeling STP would be that way for me, because every couple of months for a little while now I've given it another shot. Maybe I just need to hear some stuff from their other albums to help me appreciate Core. Who knows?
I'm jumping in a bit here, but I would say give the album Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop a try. It's the most far and away sounding record from their 'grunge' sound, in that it's got a lot of jazz influence and Scott's vocal style is entirely different. It's a bit harder to pick individual songs since their sound varies a lot, but you'd be safe with some of the hits like Unglued, Lady Picture Show, Sour Girl, Days of the Week, Interstate Love Song, etc.

And I was definitely the same with Deftones, too. It took me a long time and a lot of listens until I finally got into them, but it was worth it.

Thanks for the suggestions, man. I'll make sure to check that stuff out. Cheers.

Jacob

Yeah, STP seem like yet another band only known for their debut and maybe one or two songs after that.

Glad to see you're open to check them out though! Tiny Music is a good suggestion. And Purple, even if it's a lot grungier, but you can already tell on that that they have their own sound.

I'll just go ahead and link some songs I like here from different albums, so that you and anyone else can check them out:

Just listen at least a little to each of those songs and tell me again that he can only sound like Eddie Vedder ;)

Oh, and even if I was a bit disappointed with the last album, it does have some great songs. The single, which sort of mixes their grungy side with their psycho-pop side, is one of them:

Such a beautiful song, I Love Shangri

Yeah, it's an amazing album that really summarizes all their sounds up until that point. Ranging from heavy and dirty to very beautiful and melodic. And Scott really shows his range.

Yeah, those two are great! I also really enjoy First Kiss on Mars and Maver. I listened to the album today for the first time since around release, actually. It's a solid album, it just lacks a lot of what I love with STP. Some very un-inspired songs and a little too clean and ordinary rock-ish sound. But when it shines, it shines good!

What would your top 5 STP tunes be?

Jacob

Damn, that's a tough question. It's one of those bands where I have so many favorites I dread the thought of listing them, especially in a particular order. But I'll humor you!

5. Vasoline

4. Naked Sunday

3. Trippin' on a Hole In A Paper Heart

2. Ride The Cliché

1. Glide

Your turn. :P

5 - Lounge Fly

4 - Church On Tuesday

3 - Ride The Cliche

2- Regeneration

1 - Silvergun Superman

Thats was tough

Jacob

Great picks. Your #1 and #2 are easily amongst my favs as well. Like I said, too many great songs to pick just a few.

I read there's a lot of shit flinging between the band and Scott Weiland now. He doesn't want them to use the STP name and they don't want him to perform any STP songs. I wonder what will come of this mess... too bad it feels like Scott won't be given another chance ever again. I'd actually prefer if they just call it quits and let the music and history rest with some dignity.

Id quite happily see the brothers team up with Rich patrick again to make another army of anyone record!(love that record) Thats a far batter idea than trying to carry on STP without Scott. I wonder how many of the songs Scott has the right for?
