Thought it would be cool for people to share what their working on musically, don't be embarrassed about sharing I have literally no idea what I'm doing with either writing or recording I just mess around for fun so you can't be any worse. I'll start the thread with a short clip of something I was playing around with today.

theres a small teams leep influence i can hear on this haha i followed you
heres a song i just did https://soundcloud.com/tomkillsjerry/what-i-need

lol yeah that guitar patch is my attempt to get a delay tone like Todd. That track is pretty sweet, there's lots of interesting textures layered on top of each other and the songs structured really well so it naturally flows into the dreamy expansive section and then fades back down without being jarring,it reminds me of sitting on a deck in the sun having beers in summer.

How do you go about your writing? I'm pretty simple I usually just get some kind of central motif like a riff that will stay pretty consistently present throughout the song and I'll sort of add or take elements around that, sometimes I'll simplify that riff or make it more complex and then I'll play stuff around it. Usually I look at what range isn't too busy and I'll work out something in that area, so if the riff is in the mid range I'll try do something complimentary higher up or lower.

deftones86

i do the same pretty much I have to make music at night though. if i try to during the day nothing ever happens. I write at night and mix during the day its the only way ill ever get anything done. sometimes its just not there and i dont force it. like sometimes ill sit for 8 12 hours trying to get something to work but it never comes out right. but that song i posted took 1 hour to make and another hour to mix. its like everything just falls into place haha

DeftonesNZ

Yeah it's an odd thing, sometimes I'll change the strings on my guitar or dial in a new patch and all of the sudden it feels like my sound is just right and I'll come up with lot's of stuff. You seem like you've got a good handle on FL, I've done abit of that but found it hard to work with, I'm not great at setting up sounds, like I know what I want because I can hear it in my head but I don't know what adjustments I should make to get there, I also have trouble with writing in it because I like just being able to play something over and over improvising things on the go, with something like FL it's harder to do that because you have to go move stuff around to get it right you can't really do it on the fly, I did have a midi keyboard at one stage which made it 100x better but even still I never got to know my way around enough to get the sounds I was hearing in my head.

I made this one in FL when I had the keyboard but as you can hear I wasn't able to get the interesting textures like you do

Oh yea man it takes awhile to get your head around how synthesis works. Like I can't live without my midi keyboard I have to have it because jammin with the keys is essential for me. I can lay out everything on the piano roll and have a good idea of what it's going to sound like but I always n sounds to robotic. And you had a midi keyboard?  I can hook you up with one. I have one just sitting around the house this one to be exact http://www.amazon.com/Novation-Launchkey-Keyboard-Controller-Synth-weighted/dp/B00B9QONQQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1436436465&sr=8-1&keywords=Launchkey+49&pebp=1436436494299&perid=1QEDRR1NE4DGHNX9QA4R

Just PM your address I'll ship it to you.

DeftonesNZ

Yeah with piano roll I have to keep doing little adjustments to make the notes come in and end as I want them and it gets fidgety and time consuming, thanks for the super kind offer but I live in New Zealand so shipping would be a nightmare, the one I had was one of those basic Alesis ones where they designed it poorly, when the usb cord was plugged in to the back of the controller the plug would stick out too far meaning it would get knocked alot and it would break the connector, while it worked though it was really helpful so it's definitely a bit of equipment I'll invest in again.

Here's a fresh one, the playing and recording is a mess but I think it's got good bones.

Hey, I think there was some similar thread a while ago but I stooped working on music for a while but I am back to it.

I've been working on 2 different projects

https://soundcloud.com/lustfulmusic

the link above is more electronic/beat oriented

I have a different thing musically that I'm working on as well, more guitar oriented. I will post it soon.

Really like the guitar ideas @DeftonesNZ posted. reminds me alot of the mellow tracks from teamsleep.

@deftones86 My favourite tracks from you are "White Lies tomkillsjerry Remix" and also the last track you posted on this thread, they sound the most experimental stuff I think.

deftones86

Thanks for listening. That white lies track seems to be alot of peoples favorite. Its been a year since I started making music and I'm finally getting Ok at getting what's in my head out haha I gave you a follow on SC I'll leave you some comments on your tracks

cEvin Key

Yeah man it takes some time until one manages to actually make things come the way they are in your head. I guess you just have to keep making alot of music all the time. That's what I'm trying to do, just sucks that I don't have enough time for it.

deftones86

Yea I usually make a track a week at least I've done about 50 in the past year.

My latest https://soundcloud.com/tomkillsjerry/when-the-sky-met-the-sea

Awesome thread! Really like the sounds of the demos you guys posted...I'm not the greatest audio engineer but here is my first mix I did about a year ago.
I hope to re-record and master it sometime and lay some vocals down.

Just about finished with another new track too that I've been working on for the past few months.. I'll have to post it so you guys can check it out.

Look forward to hearing more music from SL members.

Was testing out recording in windows 10 and ended up just recording a loop of the riff from one of my previous ideas and improving over it like Todd from Team Sleep does, it's messy as usual but if you're in to that style you may like it.

For sure sounds like you got a team sleep vibe going on, I like it. I dig a lot of ambient music and love fucking around with heavy amounts of reverb and delay on my patches for song ideas as well. What kinda amp and fx are you using?.. you almost nailed the Todd sound with your setup.  I do 100% of my guitars with a Line 6 POD HD 500.
