My first experience was the Blackdiamondskye Tour. It was my first concert back in 2010, and i was excited to see my favorite band.....AiC. When Deftones came up, i was interested, but sadly the only parts I remember is when they played ATF, MOS and Sextape. After that day, I heard MOS on Pandora and i went to see what else they had. and that's how i got into them. I bought Koi no Yokan around the time AiC Released TDPDH.

What about you guys?

Interesting...  That was a pretty decent tour.  AIC is okay, and I really like Mastodon.  I saw them on that tour too, near the DC area.

I first learned about Deftones from an exgirlfriend of mine in high school, sometime between WP and ST, so like 2002-ish or so.  She was a huge fan and so I just went with it, honestly not that crazy about them at first.  We broke up and a few years later (like 2005-ish or so) they came up in a conversation and I decided to look into what they'd been doing since.  Needless to say, I heard the Self Titled and I was hooked.  The following year they released SNW and it was just game over for me.  Those two are still my favorite Deftones albums.

Came across some random dude on MySpace who wrote poems and one of them quoted a line from Beware. I thought it was interesting so I googled it, found the song, listened, fell in love with it. Tried to listen to their other songs but hated them. It took me about six months before I actually got into most of their music. It was a very slow process, especially with the heavier stuff because it was never my musical preference, but eventually it won me over and now they're my favourite band.

Hearing Change on the radio the summer of 2000. I was 14. Bought White Pony days later, it was all over after that.

First heard Change on the radio when I was 7 or 8, must have been the mid 2000s. Although I was little, I distinctly remember the song when I first heard it. It was dark, unorthodox, and overall different sounding than other music on the radio. I wasn't a particularly active kid, as I spent long hours in front of the TV and in the house. But that song really got the wheels turning in my head. It was strange...in a good way.

A couple years later, 2008 or 2009 maybe, I was on one of my usual youtube video watching binges which could last all afternoon. I stumbled across a post-apocalyptic short film with Pink Maggit playing as part of the film's intro. PM, like Change, just captivated me. It was mainly the intro, those first couple minutes. Chino's whispering vocals, Steph's raw riffs, along with the dark, mournful atmosphere, I just loved it man.

Fast forward to March 2013. I'm an angsty and rather depressed teenager, had just turned 15, was having lots of trouble making friends, and was struggling in school. I was learning how to really explore music, and it had become an escape for me as my life got more difficult. I had stopped listening to the up-beat rock and pop punk of my childhood and was getting into heavier music, like A Perfect Circle for example.

I remember one day I wanted to listen to Change just because I hadn't heard it in a while or something, and looked it on on youtube. I noticed YT had a whole playlist of Deftones, and since I was figuring out how to "explore" music, I figured screw it, and clicked it. That's when My Own Summer came on. Now I grew up listening to some hard rock like Linkin Park and Breaking Benjamin, so the metal vibe didn't alienate me, rather it attracted me. From the start I dug MOS' menacing riff and Chino's vocals, it was like LP and BB but magnified and heavier. That entire playlist was filled with songs which would become my favorite. Bored, Be Quiet and Drive(which to this day has had a profound emotional impact on me), Sextape, Hole In the Earth, mainly the music videos. And I had fallen deep in love with the band.

it was 2001 when i first heard "7 words", then in 2003 they dropped "minerva" and that was the time when i found myself dedicated to this band.

When Korn released Follow the Leader album, I asked it to my dad as a gift. In the record store, they gave him ATF cassette as a gift (assuming "similar" type of music). Love at first sight, and still my favorite album (with S/T)

Dude...that fucking thing was intense.  Holy Shit.  One of my good buddies basically lived something like that.  Change playing over that was brilliant.

It's hard to believe I have listened to them for coming up on 20 years.  I caught them first time on tour with Kiss in 96 in Chicago.  They really jumped to the top of my favorite bands after ATF and when White Pony came out and Digital Bath hit me.

Deftones opening for White Zombie/Pantera in 1996.

Then I saw them open for 311 in the fall of 96 which is when I really got hooked.  Then they played a free show at a record store in Philly and I've been a fan ever since.

Quite recently actually...

Koi no yokan was very well received by the press and other music forums so I figured, I'd give it a chance

1996. I was into death metal. In France a tv channel used ti broadcast metal clips during late night. Then they broadcasted 7 words and bored. At this time something caught me. So I managed to find Adrenaline at my local record store. It was a cool record but far from perfection. Then October 1997. I saw them live in France for their first show one or two weeks before ATF came out. The show was insane. other shows I saw from them never manage to catch the first one. Had a blast for ATF when it came out. And since then, it became my favourite band.

1995. "listening booth" of a local record store that had adrenaline available to listen. Was floored and played that casette tape ad nauseam in my old beater car. Saw them open up for 311 (during the "blue album" tour) a month later at Newport Music Hall. Their performance was fucking insane. Made sure to see them live anytime I can, since.

First time for me was on some Top 20 Hard Rock video countdown on MTV, they showed My Own Summer.   I was so-so on it then, but also very young.  Then a few years later when TRL on MTV debuted the music video for "Change".  That was all she wrote, been hooked since.

I heard My own Summer on the radio in 1997 when I was 11. Asked my parents for their albums for Christmas and that was that.

darkomilicic

I heard Bored on the radio when it was a single and saw they were an opener on White Zombie and Pantera so I went to the show! The show started and the 1st band came on and I thought it was Deftones and they were awful....turns out that was Eye Hate God!! Deftones were next up and I saw what looked like a Lil Chinese dude scream and croon for 25 minutes and thought oh hell yeah and I've been listening every since!
