Eastern Inspired Poems

Ponds

i wonder when fish
wake in the morning
and stretch their fins,
when does the day provide
a chance for adventure?

The Carp

I found a carp,
sunbathing in the shallows.

His golden scales looked warm
and glowed like embers
smoldering underwater...

I thought a star
had fallen from the sky,
and landed in the pond,
and molten still.

I Settle

like the water of a river,
i settle in the places meant to be

Cherry-Blossom Sun

she hides in the woods,
he peeks through leaves and limbs,
cherry-blossom sun

Impressions

open
the horizon,
impressions felt
between earth and sky

Clouds Pass By

the clouds passed by,
the wind carried them softly
and rounded them out

I Listen

i listen to the peace,
each breath is here

Laughing

laughter is fun,
breaths and hearts at play
like lambs or fawns
light in the hoofs

You Words Are Love

Your words are love
and open the way
to fall in your arms

half asleep

slow morning,
half asleep seems easy,
and i refuse to
read the news,
because
i'd rather be
half asleep
forever

logic

take me
places new,
but not too
far from here

Poetry

Ways,
language
and everything,
searching
for love
and minds.

Breath

In love there is breath,
So light and mellow,

And hearts are light,
And float upon the air

Like journeying motes
That travel with the breeze.

Poems About Coffee and Nonsense

The Night Awake

To stay the night awake,
The room is bright and warm,
Yet the world outside is dark.

I see it through the window,
It holds the world in silence...

Even when I'm not inclined
To give it any thought,

It's presence still is felt,
Letting me know it's there,

And I myself feel dark.

The Ink Well

I look into the deep,
At long, overcome by
So clear a darkness,
Enough to wonder,
How can something so dark
Reflect so well?
Upon the surface
What light absorbed is me,
In essence, and of will, inborn,
In hopes to find
Something, anything, substantial,
And, for what solace,
All persuasions help,
When sinking deeper into
So dark a well.

The Nap

My mind, having borne
The weight of wear
The day has brought,
Needs burden less,
And I'm inclined
To lay down and rest.

Given to gentle decline,
I wholly welcome
The peaceful fading
Of consciousness,
To prolong less
The watchful hours,
The weariness,
And nap.

Seasonal Poems

The Bees

They roam the groves, both near and far,
And bumble on about the shrubs,
And, for all the graces nature holds,
They make their ways around the bowers
And lose themselves amid the flowers.

Morning Hike (Octave)

On morning hike, the woods were welcoming,
I found myself on mossy grounds, green trails,
Among such lovely white blossoming trees,
Whose cheerful branches offer love outreached,
Whose radiant blooms, like sprites, awakened
The sleeping earth there nestled in the shade
That gently opened down the wooded lane,
When sparkling beyond bid me further peek;

Summer Sonnet

'Mid pleasant summer day, and bluest skies,
And in the shade of swaying maple trees,
The charms of nature made a wondrous scene,
With rustling boughs to only break the silence,
So, came the gentle touch of love in kind,
With gracing coolness sent upon the breeze,
That filled each breath with spirit and with glee,
And, as I marveled with my softened eyes,
A lively butterfly come tumbling past,
And looked unto her merry little heart
To be caught up in the winds of the Zephyr,
Which carried her along, and in her fancy,
It was as if she slipped from hand to hand
As her friends carried her into the meadow.

Dark Poems

Cold at the Pump

Cold at the pump I rub my hands together,
But, for a moment, there’s nothing there,
And I search for the pockets of my coat,

My breath faces its very death and fades,
And, somewhere in the air, I leave it there,
And notice my time is ticking away,

The cold gets in close and I feel the chill,
When I realize I’m getting mugged by it,
And shiver and shudder at the thought of it,
When all I want is to get my ass home!

It is Too Much

It is too much t’ take in at once,
With too many things going on,
Nothing is really that certain,
It’s like I’m running in circles,
And often I feel like I’m lost.

I ask myself, ‘Could I belong?’
Maybe I really don’t want to,
Or maybe I do, but, I’m sure,
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . It is too much.

Oh, could it be by fate or luck
To be where I have ended up?
I ask, ‘Is it really worth it
For the emotions that surface,
When all I want is to relax?'
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . It is too much.

Classic/Ancient Inspired Poems

Imitations of Milton

The journey forward, through so vast a space,
Has brought this time, weighing so heavy on
My mind and body, left to apathy,
To reach some kind of middle ground and keep
As active as I can within the limits
Of the environment. But, first to call
Attention are the known realities
Of isolation, which I've come to find
Oft' lead to unease. But, to help me out
In my solitude, it is good advice
To find something to do to stimulate
My mind, and make up for lost company.

Rise of the Gods

They came from all the ends of Earth, to serve
In building temples; fashioning their idols;
Each man to his own god, and daily taking
Their fill and making merriment before
The table of the gods. Yet, what they sought
They took the more, but were not thankful for
All the gifts bought at th' expense of the gods,
And, bolder, never thinking twice to halt.
Zeus himself burned in anger, and grew bold
Enough to threaten pouring out his wrath
And let the burning flames consume them all.
Poseidon, Hades, an' all the other gods
Then gathered at Olympus and held council.
They all agreed that such severe attack
As to consume with fire the world of men
Was dangerous enough to pray a halt,
That such intense a flame could spread to heaven,
And they themselves would suffer just as ill
A fate as those mortals upon the surface.
So, Zeus agreed and sought another means
Of which to solve the problem of the hosts
Of men who had gathered in wantonness
To take advantage of the gods to ruin.
When, they agreed as one to gather arms,
And so besiege in might with wind and rain,
To flood the world and wash away the lot.

Mother's Helper

In case you didn't know,
And so you will remember,
Just think of what you hold,
And here is something simple,

And, so you will remember,
I'm tying a string on your finger.
Here is something simple,
Of why you came to be there.

I'm tying a string on your finger,
And mind your mother,
Of why you came to be there,
Think why we took the bother.

And mind your mother,
When you look at this string,
Think why we took the bother,
And remember the medicine.

When you look at this string,
Just think of what you hold,
And remember the medicine,
In case you didn't know.

At Nan's Table

At Nan's table we would gather,
Where we'd eat our meals together.
Precious memories we did make
When we'd meet most every day
And enjoy the love of each other.

Each day, we'd gather in number,
Full of joy, and full of hunger.
We'd all give thanks for the greater things
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . At Nan's table.

Gathered around, there was love there,
And each of us had not a care
But to enjoy this time of day,
Where the whole world would fade away,
And there we'd be, all together,
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . At Nan's table.

Always a Song

There's always
a song played
upon our hearts,
and time spent
searching the sounds;

but for to know
the meaning of life.

Losing My Mind

Where did I put my keys?
This is driving me crazy!

I've retraced my steps, back to front,
Checked my pockets... several times,
Looked around where I'd been outside,
Even rummaged through the garbage!

Where did I put my keys?
This is driving me crazy!

I've been everywhere thrice,
Even where I'm sure I never was,
I've run out of places to look,
And, still, they're nowhere in sight!

Where did I put my keys?
This is driving me crazy!

The Junk Shop

I was lost among the old junk
in the farthest of corners, when
I heard a clock ticking away.

It had a rhythm of its own.
Though the ticks were separate
it appeared to echo instead,

and, when I watched the clock face,
the second hand would twitch a bit
before jumping to the next notch.

'Guess I don't need a clock,' I thought.
But then I glanced down at my watch,
and it read the same exact time.

dirty thoughts

if you told me
your dirty thoughts,
the things that made you be,
what you'd say
is nothing worse
than what was meant to be.

you know

what takes over,
mindless words?
whatever comes
of interest?

mindless words
are no surprise,
your interests
are on autopilot

it's no surprise
whatever comes,
you're on autopilot,
it just takes over

Rebels

The real rebels
are the ones
who persevere.

From A Galaxy

Of the cosmos...

Here's Earth,
Circling the Sun,
In a solar system,

In a galaxy with life.

Ventures (In Orbit)

From inception, and course,
When variables mix and coalesce,
Uniformity and order emerge,
From clarity and leadership,

With vision and purpose,
Gathering the orbiting material
That ventures into common bodies,
And makes new worlds exist.

Prayer to Jove

O' Jove, such hope arose in my son,
There in his look, such spark and life,
His bright eyes shining with the utmost joy,
To think his future had bright days ahead.

Enough to pull him from his family,
To set out on the waters' crystal gleam,
And seek the early light before the morn,
And take the maiden voyage of his life.

O' Jove, love has it's way of giving speed,
As gentle currents encouraged him on,
For what I saw there in his youthful heart,
Was his bold will to seek the guiding light.

Athena

One day the great god Zeus became so troubled
About a headache which had long plagued him,
That, able to bear it no longer, he pleaded
Among the gods to help him in his plight.
They quickly brought Hephaestus before Zeus
And asked the smith god for his aid, to see
If there was anything that he could do.
The Smith proposed a speedy operation,
In which he took his weighted ax and split
Open Zeus's head, cleaving a wide gash,
From which out sprang a goddess, fully clad,
With sword and shield, bellowing a war cry,
Who became Zeus's most loved child, Athena,
Who blessed mankind with wisdom and her arts.

Venus and Mars

Apollo, who sees everything, had seen
The love affair between Venus and Mars,
And went to Vulcan to inform him of
What he had seen. When Vulcan heard the news
Of this betrayal, he was angered and filled
With righteous jealousy, and so devised a plan
To snare the two and catch them in the act,
Wherefore he fashioned a net made of gold
With threads so fine 't was nigh invisible
T' the naked eye, and then went to the chamber
Of their adultery and placed it round
The bed and waited for the two to come,
When he would spring his trap and shame them both.
Before long both Venus and Mars appeared
And fell into the bed as she embraced him,
When Vulcan saw his chance, and, in a fit
Of rage, ensnared the lovers in the act,
And dragged them to the heights of Mount Olympus,
And threw them down before the rest o' the gods
To publicly shame them, uncovering
Their wanton, lustful deeds for all to see.
The gods then gathered round, and when they saw
The struggling pair, thought it humorous
The way they fought and kicked in vain to free
Themselves, and laughed about the whole ordeal
Making a mockery of the whole scene.
Vulcan, then, sought to be granted divorce
And asked that he be recompensed for all
That he had paid, in vain, for Venus' hand.
Jupiter saw the jealous anger burning
On Vulcan's countenance, and so in pity,
Sought to appease the smith god with the promise,
If he would keep his wife, that Mars would pay
To make amends and settle the dispute.
Vulcan agreed an' kept Venus for his wife.

Classic poetry is great for learning what poetry is, but I'm afraid it's not the best for learning 'voice.' So, I'm taking some time away, as I'm starting a new reading regiment, and aiming for a paradigm shift in my work...  I'm ditching classic poetry, and returning to my roots of dark fantasy, sci-fi, and Gothic poetry. :)

I really want to have a productive year, but my poetic 'voice' is in dire need of medical attention. :o

I rarely talk about biblical archetypes outside of the veil of poetry, but I'm well versed in Paradise Lost. :)
