Title: Crazy Interview

SATURDAY NIGHT WRIST

– Almost 3 months after Saturday Night Wrist's release, what's your feeling/opinion about this album? Any regrets?

No regrets, I love it.

– In an interview, Shaun Lopez explained us that he and Chino had reworked quite a lot the structures of the songs from SNW. Abe, Frank, Chi and you, were you able to give your opinion about that? How did you guys live Chino's « isolation » from you with Shaun?

We were not able to give our opinion to that cause Chino takes it upon himself to do stuff without our consent. Selfish minded. We all hate this very much I might add. We don't write the songs to be re-arranged by Chino. One day he'll will lose us if he keeps on doing this to us.

– SNW's demos that you've recorded with Bob Ezrin show us a much more atmospheric and progressive side of Deftones, and are quite different from the finished album. Do you have any regrets concerning the final direction the album took?

Like I said, check the answer to previous question.

– I'm a huge fan of the demo version of the song Finger of Death. What's the future of this track as well as the other demos that didn't make it on the album?

There is no future for it since Chino will never do anything for it.

– During the conception of SNW, Maverick was pressuring you quite a lot so that they could get some control over this project. What is your feeling about that?

lol

– What is the contract still linking you to Maverick?

None now. We're on our parent company now, Warner Bros.

THE BAND

– Once touring for SNW's promotion is over, are you guys planning to focus on your side-projects or on a new Deftones record straightaway?

My other band Kush, we're planning to record our record this year and get it out next year. Also, I have a drum and bass project as well, Sol Invicto. It will also be available later this year or next. As for everyone else, who knows. We (Deftones) plan to tour well into next year, so busy busy busy is the plan.

– Next march/april, you'll be touring in France (and Europe) with your old friends from Will Haven. In Europe we're all very happy because Will Haven is a very respected and appreciated band and this kind of concert always happens in the USA. How do you feel about touring with them? Can we expect any surprise or featurings?

We love them. As for any surprises, none are planned as of yet. Just gonna have a good time is the plan.

– In a recent interview for Ultimate Guitar, we can read that you're planning to write and record some material this summer on the road during a big US. Are you still talking about this?

I have many plans. Only problem is, there is simply not enough hours in the day for me to do all that I wish to do everyday.

– Chino is producing the next Will Haven record with Shaun Lopez. Are you thinking about producing the next Deftones record yourself or working back with Terry Date?

lol. Deftones will decide what to do when we get there. Making plans for us isn't easy.

– During the process of making albums, your relationships with Chino have sometimes been quite difficult. Aren't you afraid that it could make the band explode for the next album? Have you made some good resolutions for preventing that?

Sure, only cause he's inconsiderate of all of us. If there is any volatile situation, it's cause he's a dick to us. And eventually, we won't stand for it and the problem will come to a head.

– During Chino's experience with Team Sleep, you've spent some time putting up B-Sides & Rarities. On the more or less long term, is there a volume 2 in preparation?

There will be more to come one day. But nothing is on the table right now.

– Deftones is going to be 20 soon. What vision do you have of your discography, your musical evolution, your career in general?

We will be together for a long time, unless Chino causes any drama. I'd like to say for the record, I love chino. We are friends/family. We all get along most of the time. But one day, he's gonna make a mistake that the rest of us will not be able to accept. What that will be, I don't know. I hope it never comes to that. Time will tell. Until then, we're all having fun together and will continue to make music together.

YOURSELF

– You're considered to be the « metal guy » in the band. How do you see your most quiet songs like Lucky You or U,u,d,d,l,r,l,r,select, start ?

I only talk about metal the most. I like many things besides metal. As a guitarist, it's my fav stuff to play. As a listener, sky's the limit. In fact, many of the so-called quiet songs we have, I wrote. Not all, but many of them. I don't write any lyrics. Not for me.

– You often play the bass and keyboards (especially on Beware) live. What motivates you? Is it your response to Chino playing more and more guitar?

Lol no, it's just something I feel like doing. No other reason.

– Your guitar tuning has been going lower and lower on every album. And we all know you're a huge Meshuggah fan. As they did, are you thinking about switching to 8-string guitars?

Yes, I am going to 8 strings on the next record.

– Recently we've heard of Sol Invicto, your new drum n' bass/metal project. Is it an evolution from Kush or a whole different thing?

Totally different.

– What are your projects with Sol Invicto?

It's still in its infant stages right now. Just working on the music.

– Deftones is currently between two tours. What is a typical day of Stephen Carpenter like?

Golf, golf, golf. With sprinkles of some smoking weed, tv, hanging with friends, eating, and last but not least, some sex. lol

– I remember reading in an old interview that your favorite song to play live was Lotion. Which one is it now?

Rats!rats!rats!

– What's up with your golfing career? Any link with your MySpace name (goin pro 2k8!!!)..?

Just practicing. Goin pro 2k8!!! is my goal. Is it a realistic goal, not likely. But, if I can make it, I will be there as soon as I can.

– Any question that I'd have forgotten to ask you?

I can't read your mind. If I could, I would be on top of the world for sure!!!

– A last word for the readers of deftnz.net?

Ok, here it goes. For all reading this and might be wondering what it's all about for us. We're a group of friends first off. The band, it is what we, as a group of friends do when we're together. Problems, we have many. But one thing we all have, is love for what we do and each other. So, with that being said, it's our honor and privilege to make music and have people who enjoy it so much. From me, for us, to all of you, thank you all very much for all of your support.

they're gonna keep getting interviewed until one of them admits snw isn't as great as everyone makes it out to be.

SNW being good or not is a matter of opinion and taste.  Chino and the rest of the band could come out and say the album sucks, and I'd still love it.

We have the song, man.  It's just a crappy live version of it.  Still an awesome song though.

hmmm...i got into Tiger Woods golf coz of Stef. now im also jamming that game pretty much everyday. so that, some weed smoking, eating, tv, and some sex. nice lifestyle, also pretty normal. like, i live like that too, tons of people do.

Chino comes across as some confused artist type, who constantly fucks up somehow. thats something ive never really thought of him as being

I think he's just all fucked up from all the drugs and shit he's done to himself over the years and relationships and shit are all fucking with his head
I think it's his addiction to speed and his apparently present dislike for weed that's distancing him from the rest of the band

I remember this interview. They seem to be getting along alot better these days, and I think it will show in Eros. And Steph is the man for telling the truth.
