Title: Deftones need some more upbeat songs?
Post by: deftonesboy on Feb 01, 2008, 10:22 PM
I dont know about you guys but i always thought it would be sweet to have some upbeat deftones songs, and I dont mean agressive i just mean upbeat. I always thought the Boys Republic riff was very upbeat but Chinos vocals took it back down.

Opinions...

Would you guys like to hear some upbeat stuff on Eros?

i dont think the deftones will ever be upbeat, considering most of their songs deal with sex and/or violence

That's a bit of a narrow view of their lyrical content isn't it?

I wouldn't mind hearing some more upbeat songage. And I definitely agree with you dtboy about Boy's Republic - it's upbeat with it's riff but still dark. I always felt the same about BQAD as well. Chino says Abe is playing faster for this record, for one, so that could be good but doesn't neccessarily mean it's gonna be positive fast....

I've always felt the have one or two on each release.

BQAD, Boy's Republic, Minerva, Cherry Waves, etc.

I've always like that about them.Every album contains a little bit of everything.

Cherry Waves is upbeat? Ehhh since when?

Mein is the upbeat song of SNW, the record could've used another one or two.

upbeat like mein and rapture? god i hope not. when snw (awful record) was finished chino said "i didnt want to put a bunch of sadness into the record, we already made that record" - refering to s/t. i hope this time he says "i dont want to put a bunch of happiness on this record,we already made that record". more songs like finger of death, birthmark, bloody cape moana, crenshaw please

Yes, please please please, let me get what I want... Lord knows it would sound like Bloody Cape..

God help me, god help me, god help me, god, god help... Aw, when I'm in a bad mood and listen to the break down of that song no one better be in my way. I would straight up murder a cop in front of his childern... Wait, what!? Kidding... Trey, you listening ;)

Yep, indeed.

The more I think about it, the more lightweight SNW seems, although I do still consider it a good record. I don't think it's one that has necessarily stood the test of time, even after less than 18 months. This album needs to pack a punch, Deftones have never produced a bad album, but this one needs to be on a par with the work done pre-Self-Titled.

Bands, artists, people, whatever, in any industry, they always reach a certain high where everything falls into place. It's just perfect. Like Deftones ATF/White Pony era. I bet it took them no effort whatsoever to get the creativity flowing. It was just there, it was just perfect. However, very rarely, one could in fact debate never, does that person, band or whatever stay in this perfect situation for very long, and when its gone, it doesnt come back. Maybe a few exceptions but they're rare indeed. I think we will never get Deftones back as that unique band that had just 10 straight perfect, unique songs on a single record. It's nothing to grieve about, its just the way it goes. Incubus had it, they won't have it again either. Same for Tool. Same for NiN. Same for Radiohead. Think about it people, it's just common sense. Every record from now on will just pale in comparison with ATF/White Pony. Doesn't mean they can't be the best band in the world, for us.

Now that I think about it, it's cool when bands know they've got that perfect situation and they know that next record its going to be gone and they just break up. I have that feeling with ATD-I. They were perfect in the In/Casino/Out / Relationship-era, then just quit. Now they'll always have this great reputation.

I don't think Chino would ever allow for a happy kind of song anyway, that's not what he does. Besides I think they are at their best when they write a song which is emotional and dark, songs about love and romance and the world... I doubt the new Deftones album will be a dark album, they all seem to be very happy right now so depressing tunes won't really be on the agenda, so you might just get a few upbeat songs after all...

I'm just hoping the new Team Sleep album will be dark, depressing electronica with Chino's vocals all over it. Yeah boi..

Call me a stupid but I think that they can still make an album like ATF/WP or even better. Why? Because it's music...the only thing that limits them is thier mind and thier level of creativity, which at SNW fell. Self-titled was an awesome album, and we can't really compare that much albums cause each one of them is a bit different  - it's like evolution: Adrenaline + ATF = WP, ST + SNW = Eros? (Try comparing Adrenaline to SNW) I dream of something fresh (maybe a concept album? yeah but not about...EARTH or a double disc). Sure it wont be WP or ATF, but it will be different, we won't really know if WP was thier best until they die or disband. And as we read in the interviews - they are working together like in ATF era, and things are going pretty ok - have faith goddamn! ok now you can call me "stupid" ^^.

i feel almost the same, still i think it is possible for them to do something fresh again if they just try hard enough. radiohead did the exact same thing with kid a. i mean, their best era was behind them (the bends/ok computer). they just locked themselves up in a studio and did something different for the sake of being different. and it worked out. it doesnt always work out. but at least try goddammit.

well maybe i simply cannot accept that deftones' prime is over. maybe they should disband. i don't know. i just dont want another record of "more of the same".

I guess my definition is a tad off.

By upbeat I meant as in vibe as opposed to actual tempo in which case I guess your right.Cherry Waves reminds me of BQAD which I always considered to be quite "upbeat".

Yeah, I'd like more upbeat songs. Come on, who doesn't miss musical moments like Teething & Nosebleed? Or even street carp.
In S/T, They changed their concept of heaviness; it passed to be from elite-like songs to hexagram-like songs. Their new writing style isn't bad, but I do miss that other sort of tunes anyway. I don't know you all.

From interview with Stef:

"I'm a huge fan of the demo version of the song Finger of Death. What's the future of this track as well as the other demos that didn't make it on the album?"

"There is no future for it since Chino will never do anything for it."

Dammit that sucks  :-\

i cant imagine how chino would do the vocal melodies for FOD. but he is creative as fuck, so who knows. its a good track, yes, but i didn't really enjoy the live version with vocals.
