Title: the seattle scene
Post by: kalhan on May 29, 2008, 09:16 AM
i was listening to mudhoney (fucking amazing, fyi) and i couldn't think of more bands that happen to have that seattle grunge sound... other than, say, alice in chains.

i've been listening to sonic youth for about 9 years now and i still don't get tired of it, there's a certain amount of energy in each riff that's really captivating... nirvana would be the obvious mention here but what about something underground... from, say, the 2000s?

any recommendations?

except for the obvious grunge/seatlle-rock bands (that Az mentioned above) there are some more obscure bands that never really entered the mainstream. The Melvins, Screaming Trees and Mother Love Bone are a few. then there are even more underground bands that aren't really any good as far as I know.

Screaming Trees are one of the great bands from that time that never got the recognition they deserved, Start with 'Sweet Oblivion' then 'Dust' then work your way backwards, you wont be disappointed.

Since 2000s right? Why are these all pre 2000s?

How about These Arms are Snakes, Fall Of Troy, Blood Brothers, Botch, Minus The bear?

EDIT: Whoops this is grunge only. Nevermind.

gawd, back when i was a little kid the seattle scene, and the sound was everything to me...

it really injected a large ammount of fanatacism for music into me..being so young, it helped define who i became..pretty deep

the old grunge thread seems to be lost so I'm posting this here instead, even though it's not entirely related.

I've rediscovered an old favorite of mine: Days of The New. a lot of grunge fanatics give this "band" a lot of shit for pretty much copying AIC's acoustic sound and making a career out of it, but imo they deserve a lot more credit than that. it's actually pretty much a solo project from Travis Meeks, as he's switched band members regularly and done all the writing himself. he was 17(!) when he released the first album. and even if he might lack in originality, he is a fantastic songwriter, singer and guitarist. if you're into the grunge sound, especially the more acoustic stuff, then you should check them out. the first two albums are almost entirely acoustic. but they are real rockers nonetheless. here's my favorite song from the first album (not perfect quality, but whatever):
