Most people outside this board think SNW is better than S/T.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
cause it is.
that's cos most people are cunts.
That's even more funny than that one time I put my entire fist in my belly button!
I prefer ST over SNW.... but then again, it all depends on my mood.
Sidenote.. Id take WP over all, anyday.
I agree WP's on top. S/T and SNW....that's a tough one. S/T was a hard time for the toners, but so was SNW. SNW had some classics like "Beware", "Combat", and "Kimdracula". But S/T as a whole sounded more coherent and fluid. It also featured killer songs like "Hexagram" "WGTB" "Minerva" "Bloody Cape" "Needles/Pins" and "Anniversary" - good grief the whole album was good! Regrettably I find Good Morning beautiful, deathblow, and moana rather forgettable as individual songs, but they work into the album rather nicely.
Anywhoo, S/T>SNW
I think snw is more multifacetical, and that's something good really. White pony was loved for the same reason if you think about it. I think I'd pick up snw because it keeps a good level throughout the album (though I don't like Mein and pink C), but I have to admit that Minerva and needles & pins are better songs than anything on snw for me.
S/T pwns SNW. its as simple as that.

Wise people, that's coz you two are my friends :D
s/t has killer song (so does snw) but, it's almost the same feeling, the same dark wave, the same sadness. SNW has a lot of dynamism (I don't know if that word exists, don't care really) and it's very very very specific on each song, s/t was nothing like that at all.
Hard choice for me.
...but as a recording, SNW was kind of crap. It's the prodcution that makes it a good album and how everything flows. The beginning of the album is awkward, songs don't flow, some sound like they were recorded in a totally different way, randomness of PCP, [ok, just because White Pony included an electronic song, does not mean every album after that has to include that ONE song, how about 2 or 3 to balance everything out], etc etc.
I used to not like S/T, but then I realized the sound they were going for and the images they wanted to convey with their music. All the songs ahve that same "sound" like the ones on ATF share [Stef's guitar work and sound or Abe's drumming]. Overall, SNW isn't horrible, but as an album, it kind of lacks cohesion.
Well that's so true Jerry Curls, the production. Terry Date owns anyone, no matter what they say. Why the fuck does Beware sound so different from others on the same album? CRAPPY PRODUCTION. There are no other words.
'Deftones' is their best album.

Picking one over the other is futile. Theyre great in their own individual ways.
i think SNW could've been better if it was produced by terry date. everything would've just sounded and flowed 2gether better.
great thread. this has never been discussed before
yeah, these discussions are getting ridiculous. it's not like they ever turn into flame-wars or anything, but every time someone states their "facts" and someone else has their own "facts" etc... everyone here likes the band and everyone has their favorite album. that's it.

Not at all. S/T is my favorite tones album but i dont think combat, kimdracula, and riviere are bad songs. Riviere might be my favorite deftones song because it's so unique. I thought the songs in the middle of the album were a little weak....like mein, uudd whatever the fuck its called and rats.

I totally agree with that.. I also really dislike the production of SNW. I'm glad I'm not the only one that notices that...
Uh, I recall back when SNW was released and I was amongst the handful of people who knew it was shit back then. People were so eager to ditch S/T. How things have changed...
Yeah I remember when I first came on here there were only a handful of people who liked S/T as much as I did. Maybe people gave S/T another listen and discovered just how amazing it really is...
I do think that S/T is alot better than SNW. I mean i think i would say that SNW was a good album, if it was from any other band, but i hold Deftones higher than all other bands, i expect more from them creatively... and I think that Cherry Waves, Beware and Rivière are great songs individually. With SNW if im listening to it i skip around but with every other Deftones album i can go from beginning to end and not want to skip a track. and in my opinion Battle-Axe is the best song on S/T and my second best song all-time after Be Quiet and Drive...
Quote from: jbmp1390 on Jul 02, 2008, 05:05 PM
great thread. this has never been discussed before
I thought that people have made all kind of stupid threads what's hot and what's not, but the thing is constantly happening. Where are the mods?
i think ST is the best, i can imagine myself listening to it forever even when my music taste changes in totally different direction.
there is something about the album, a very different feel to it comparing to other records.
S/T is totally unique. Its like a ghost or something. I don't know how to describe it. Its extremely powerful for me. I really like SNW. I think I can listen to it a lot and not get tired except for one problem. "Beware" feels like a hurdle that I have to get over to enjoy the rest of the album. I hate skipping tracks. I like to listen to albums in full and honestly, "Mein" and "Xerxes" are a bit tiresome but still fun to listen to. I find myself sometimes dreading the disruption that is "Beware." I'm all like "Yeah, this album rocks. "Hole In The Earth," "Rapture," "Rats!Rats!Rats!" Why the fuck don't I listen to this album as mu....Oh shit. There it is. "Beware." I am so sick of this song." It just interrupts the rest of the album. I think the aforementioned lacking songs could have been replaced by some fleshed out Ezrin demos. There are a few great contenders on there that really should have made the cut.
But anyway. Its a cool album. S/T will always be the most powerful Deftones album for me, though. The imagery, the tones, the booklet, everything about it is phenomenal. I will say however, that I feel Moana is kind of a weak ending. I just don't love it like the I love the rest of the songs.
I think Moana is a very under-rated song in my opinion, I really like it.
I really like how moana finishes. But I also think that they could have produced that song better, don't sounds that polished in my mind.
S/T's riffage was good, but the majority of songs were just too "sluggish"/slow imo. The lyrics were insane, the drums a bit basic on some songs..
And on SNW I like the pace a lot better, but the lyrics are a bit "simple" on some tracks. I mean Chino's lyrics change on everything he does.
First we had adrenaline, which is pretty weird
around the fur, which is probably even more focused on relationships and even darker/weirder.
white pony, love those lyrics...really nice "stories"
s/t, really weird lyrics man i don't really get most of em. Lots of have to do with history I think or something.
snw, really basic, minimalistic lyrics (like BQAD but not always in a good way...)
same with teamsleep, again the style is completely different...
S/T was their worst. It had good ideas but weren't fully fleshed out because the band got too lazy.

the production on saturday night wrist was horrible... seriously...
personally, i haven't been able to sit through snw beginning to end, it's like each track was recorded in a different studio by a different engineer and a different producer, it lacks consistency... i wouldn't mind the entire album being recorded on a phone line or something as long as it's consistent, snw isnt...
apart from the production factor, the self titled is more deftones... deftones for me is ugliness mixed with beauty and st is just that, only on a sadistic extreme, heavy as fuck but still something your girl can listen to with you, it's really hard to write something like that, cheers to stef for alternating between meshuggah and depeche mode i guess.
moving on, beware is my favourite track from snw, i don't entirely despise pink cellphone and i'm so glad that snw comes really close as a contender to s/t.

right on. production tanked on the album. it doesn't sound coherent at all. the opening drums on "beware" always sound way too low compared to the rest of the mix. and regarding stephen switching b/w meshuggah and depeche mode...it's more the ongoing, song-writing power struggle b/w stephen and chino. some songs were very deftones (combat, beware, kimdrak, even pink), but the rest was the sound of laziness and settling.
im startin to think snw just sucks
SNW just hasn't got the lasting appeal that the other albums have had, I rarely listen to it from start to finish.

but guys... snw does not suck...
nah it doesnt suck it just sucks compared to other deftones albums...
You'll love Snw once the new album is out, just like what happened with S/T. And then you'll have a new album to bash.
i think SNW is clearly better than s/t
cherry waves alone is better than anything on s/t. then you still have kimdracula, combat, riviere, xerces, & rapture, i think these tracks are better than s/t's best too.
both real good albums though
hilarious is the fact that there are no updates about the new album.

actually, son. I did give it another fair chance. I listened to the whole dam things a couple times. After like 3 whole times through I had to start skipping a couple songs because they were so bad. But I even sat here for like 4 days listening to WGTB pretty much non stop trying to see it. and here is what I think after all of that.
