I couldn't listen to this album for a long time, and I was pissed at it, I thought how could they keep wanting to be more mainstream? They've made alot of mainstream mistakes in the past, social blunders. But I felt this was their worse. Just like the great book, I took another look, and the truth behold! This is their best so far, yes! here's why...
Stef's Guitar tone.
Chino's lyrics and Voice.
Frank's keys and samples.
Of course Chi and Abe too, but those first 3 to me are the highlight, Chino got deep in this album, A truly hard album to make I'd think, I can't even listen to Xerces.
All respect to my old favorite band. whom shared with me the direction of Soul Brains / Human Rights. Selassie I Live.
heres what i say to that..
for one. the album has Mein and pink cellphone on it which in my opinion were flops for the deftones.
second. chino wasnt very creative in the song writing. example. mein, combat. finger of death(stef said chino couldnt do anything for this track) Combat could have been a beast of a song but the "whos side are you on" bothered me and reminded me of "so why dont you RUN so why dont you run!" from Back to school. and the production on this album was shitty most notably the vocals. listen to Rapture chino sounds like shit IMO compared to the production on S/T ex: the screams in "needles and pins"
overall it was good but nothing special to say maaaaaaaan this really is the best. i think in some ways they are always progressing and getting better but not as much as we all would like to see. and i think thats gonna change with EROS
2009 cannot come fast enough

hahah. I deffinately enjoy SNW, but I dont think its their best.
it wasn't a terrible album compared to all the trash thats out now, chino lyrics weren't top notch specially since all he sang about was the earth and utter shit, I agree with ghetto the whole whose side are you on combat bothered me deeply, mein and pink cellphone were the worst songs Deftones could create, If a other band did this kind of record we would of all taken a shit on it since its them we see it as passable
SNW > S/T
:)
i really like it, i dunno if it's their best, but it could be argued. it's got some excellent songs, riviere, kimdracula, cherry waves, combat, xerces. and i thought they tried some new things, like the guitar work in rats & hite was different for them. and say what you want about mein, but it was a totally different style of song for them, so i give them props for doing it. same can be said about moana, it might not be their best but it's unique. Chino brought more personal emotion. uuddlrlr is also something they'd never really done, & it's really good. overall, SNW is great , i like it better than S/T for sure
as far as the albums sales(it not going gold), Chino being fat now(lets face it, people are that shallow, some people see him & will have nothin to do with the band based on it, lame but true. i went & got the album the first day like always), disapointment from S/T, & horrible choices in singles killed albums sales, but what's good is good is good, & SNW is a fine album. sales mean nothing when dog shit like nickelback & disturbed sell like hot cakes

its true, i think its a great album, but never the best
we all know its impossible for everyone to reach the same conclusion as to which album is the best so for some SNW might be it. . for me its hard to say which one is the best because i like them all equally and each one brings something differnent to the table IMO. deftones are pretty much the only band i know that never let me down with any of their albums. but pink cellphone should have stayed on chinos laptop.
I really don't think that SNW is the best deftones album.
They didn't brought a musical revolution with this album. Real revolutions to me were ATF and specially WP.
SNW is deftones how we know it and I think the album really has less influence then the other 2 albums I just called.
Its also the deftones album I listen the less.
second. chino wasnt very creative in the song writing. example. mein, combat. finger of death(stef said chino couldnt do anything for this track)
I dont know what the hell stef was talking about here, cause i think chinos vocal approach on the live version was awesome, eeri, moody and disturbed all in one, just total butality at the end as well. Im still pissed about this hidden gem. This song could have been killer.

IMO there is only some good songs
Beware
Xerces
Kim Dracula
Riviere
Cherry Waves
now compare these songs to White pony
Feiticeira
Digital Bath
Elite
RX Queen
Teenager
Knife Party
Korea
Passenger
Change
Pink Maggit
uhhh ya
Yeah.. the production value really threw me off on SNW.. I'm sure it's been mentioned a ton before but espescially the guitar and drums.. just didn't have that sound I'm looking for. But obviously it's all a matter of opinion.
Mein was a truly awful song.

Give it a few years, people will like it. It's a great album but some people I guess are not ready for it yet. It's waaaayyy ahead of its time.
Like all the other 'odd' albums by bands - they get respected in the end. History repeats itself. same shit/different band.
Funny thing is, people would love a repeated early album sound....that would be complete GASH. What's the point?
I'm still not into SNW yet but i'm gonna give it time.

this wouldn't happen in person. it's only because it's on a forum
what botheres me the most on this album are chinos lyrics. I think it really shows how he lacked focus making this album. his repeating all the time (rapture, rats combat) which i dont really like that much, and well the lyrics are just not nearly as interesting as in WP or S/T. Im not saying the album is uber shit, theres plenty of good songs, and some of them even have great lyrics. Still I think its lyrically the worst album by chino.
SNW is the cats pajamas, Mein is a grand song and so is the rest of the album, with the exception of Pink telephonooo being the only just decent track i've ever heard from them.
The trick is not to take Pink Cellphone too seriously.
I like Saturday Night Wrist, it's not the strongest of the Deftones material I would not say the album was poor. I liked Mein as well. I think the album proves that they can do more than just do repeats of older records and yes I am looking forward to Eros very much!!
WP>Adrenaline>ATF>SNW>S/T
Combat>HITE>Konami Code>Rats>PCP>KimDracula>Riveire>Cherry Waves>Rapture>Beware>Mein>Xerces
Don't get me wrong, I like Pink cellphone, but its just decent..
well a better way to put it would be its just good when i expect neverending amounts of amazing songs.

WP>Adrenaline>ATF>SNW>S/T
Combat>HITE>Konami Code>Rats>PCP>KimDracula>Riveire>Cherry Waves>Rapture>Beware>Mein>Xerces
this list sucks
The only songs that I feel are slightly sub-par from the rest or just not as appealing are:
Beware
Mein
Xerxes
The rest feels like a classic evolution of Deftones. "Mein" and "Xerxes" feel like a step backward in songwriting skill and "Beware" just kind of bores me. It may be because I heard versions of it so long before the rest of the record. But the rest of the tracks are very musically fulfilling to me. If it weren't for those three bumps in the road, I'd probably like SNW a shitload more. For the record I do love it just about as much as all the others all of which I hold in very high regard. Deftones are one of the few bands for me where I don't actually HATE any of their songs and all albums are "album experiences" and not just piecemeal scraping for good tracks among the din of shittiness.
The amazing thing i find about deftoens ( for me anyway) i hate a song, i don't like it at all and never play it and then one day i'll love it. its weird i've never had a band do that before ... as with this album
Its more laid back then alot of other deftoens albums ( the ones i've got/listined ot anyway)
it seems like deftones was trying to do somthing new in this album/ Borden (?) they're creativity by putting in an instrumental and a slightley techno song ( UD / Pink cell) and Very soft songs ( Beware/ cherry/ Xerces) and then Heavy metal ( Rats / Rapture)
so really thye actually got a whole range of genres.
Props to deftones
Who cares if it wasn't theyr'e best at least they're stil making music we like
this record is a real Treat when you want to feel somthing, and chino gets deeper than ever.

What really puts me off about Mein is the horrible chorus. And the outro is ummm...strange. but I apprecciate strangeness in music, even when I don't actually enjoy it.
When I was about 19 or whatever I used to have strong opinions on albums, eg - saying they were shite etc.
Now I just don't really give a toss and appreciate if I don't like it, it's not neccesarily bad, just I don't like it.
At the end of the day, every band goes through the same old thing with fans talking about the same old thing.
It will never stop and it makes me laugh.

Fucking thank you, see someone does have ears. Natural progression of a sound easy to hear there from that list. How the hell are vocal melodies on SNW for instance anywhere near as good as those on the previous albums, namely ATF and WP? I mean the idea behind songs like Combat and Mein is cool, but compared to older tunes, the vocals for me are pretty slack.
I will admit that. However whenever u write a song, its really hard to controll urself, cuz its just like ur lookin in the "mirror" and when u really see urself u might be suprised cuz u never pictured urself looking that way before. I know its not really on topic, but i think everyone can relate to that shit.

how is it mainstream? really. be quite and drive, change.. 7 words (in nu metal respects) is radio material rather than later stuff. fuck off already. but ok, you wanna call it that, its ok boy, youre a good boy, mommy loves ya. its good music, one of the better albums i think too, and thats what matters.
to be honest I personally never liked SNW much. there are several reasons to that:
a) demo versions > final album versions
I'm not sure whether that's some heavy influence from Chino (lets all remember how Team Sleep ruined most of its songs in the self titled album), but the album versions - for me personally - lack emotion. It's a highly overproduced album and the production quality (which steals the real music show) is the only overall quality which folds the album into one full creation. Comparison - S/T had an obvious general feeling, Adrenaline did too, as did ATF. Maybe White Pony's general feeling was a little clumsy, but SNW fails to have anything else as an album except for the production quality.
And in addition to this, please just turn on Bob Erzin demos, Beware early demo etc - those songs contains power, the pure form of music, while SNW seems to have been made a really user-friendly album, not much a masterpiece at all.
b) songs lack creative writing (ps - this is MY opinion, go fuck yourself if you will try to attack my personal opinion about things. you can say Sum41 and Blink-182 were awesome in songwriting, I don't care that much)
To be honest, SNW only has three songs which were really burnt into my head easily - Cherry Waves, Konami Code song (which is something Deftones never did = reinvention of yourself as an artist. Eros/new album with some live songs proved again (to me personally, again) that Deftones are not REALLY progressing as artists. Yes, they're doing what they're doing good. That's it - there's nothing that new) and Riviere. That's it. If it would be an EP instead of an album containing these three songs and, say, some of the reworks from Bob Erzin demos - I'd be much more happy with the album.
To sum up - yes, SNW is a listen-able album, but surely it is not their best - it's just a conclusory album of self-repetition as artists. I really hope Deftones will reinvent themselves as artists. And I am not mocking them - I am completely satisfied with everything they released before SNW, guys are really talented, but for me personally SNW was a step back.
Cheers

see what you're saying, but at the end of the day I guess they're out of their depth a bit with that sort of stuff and it isn't their most impressive, for instance how many times do they open with a song from SNW? And in their festival sets Beware is the major feature, and its a shame Xerces isn't played more recently, fucking practice that high note Chino.

Even though I disagree, I like the way you have explained it - without the blatant "it's crap" or "It sucks donkey balls" etc. It's constructive!
Must admit though - SNW & WP as albums, don't seem to flow as well as the others.
Am I the only one here who thinks the SNW Bob Erzin demos aren't that great? I just can't see what all the fuss is about...
I respect your opinion, but i cant say i agree with you.
I don't really regard SNW as their best but it's definitely up there.
I love all the Deftones albums except Adrenaline, which was and still is a bit difficult for me to get into. It's their only album that sounds nu-metal to me and maybe that's why.
My favourites are probably Around the Fur and ST, depending on my mood.
SNW has a really unique feel to it and some kick-ass songs.Sure it's not as heavy as some of the others but there will be more heavy albums so enjoy this one for what it is in the meantime.I don't know what everyone has against Mein - it has such a unique structure and the drums are kick ass!
Bugs me that it seems cool to say : ''Mein sucks and I only like White Pony''
Could never understand people who say that they only like White Pony because although each album is unique and different they all have the same deftones core sound.Maybe they just think it sounds cool or because their friends do it.
SNW seems to be getting the same reaction as ST did years back. Now people are starting to love ST and realise it's genius - the same will probably happen wit SNW in a few years.
one of the best birthday presents ever
someone's brain isn't receiving enough oxygen.
ehhh it was good but mein!!!!! what was that? no likey! thats the only deftones song i ever disliked . so the album i believe to be the best is self titled then its around the fur, white pony ,adrenalin, snw hopefully D EYES takes the #1 spot and i feel like it will be
Hole in the Earth, Cherry Waves and Beware are classics. Rats! Rats! Rats! and Combat are really good. Everything after that is ok. I think it's slightly better than S/T and WP because of how strong Hole in the earth, Cherry Waves and Beware are. So I would say it's their second best album behind ATF.
I think every Deftones album is a great album, but there really was no fluency or flow with SNW!
It was recorded in different spots, with different producers etc, and there was too much stuff on there that Chino could have used for Team Sleep instead he dragged it on to a Deftones record, however it still has some of there best work on it like Cherry Waves and Riviere!

to be honest I personally never liked SNW much. there are several reasons to that:
a) demo versions > final album versions
Cheers
i agree with everything you just said.
stef needs to step up his game bigtime. just lazy.
and chino give the screams a rest, just keep the impassioned vocals where it resides between yelling and audible tongue. (snw's lyrics were just okay at times, and other instances -poo poo.)
abe is a straight up g. no problems there.
franks got groove.
chi, bless him. he's golden forever.
Its funny how wikipedia reports that this album got positive review from critics despite some of us fans not appreciating it...

the names of the reviews are mentioned as well. Even in the SNW interview list, got some good ratings.
We must all remember that musical taste is opinion, don't crucify my please. I love all the boys' efforts to date, but I personally like SNW more than I like ST. My reasons for voting SNW Deftones' SECOND best album of all time (After ATF) are as follows:
This entire album either puts me in space floating in nothingness or makes me want to rip the heads off of babies.. sometimes both in the SAME song. Now that's talent.
Rapture's verse riff is fucking RIDICULOUS. Steph kills it, it's pure genius. I'm ripping off like 4 baby heads by the time it's over. My backyard has a lot of Gazeebos in it (anyone watch and get the American Horror Story reference? :P)
Combat is one of the rawest songs on this album, and is pure emotion. Whose side are you on, with the inflection switched between SIDE and ON, is powerful as hell... and the "Don't think that I don't know, cuz I do.. [3:30 - 4:00]" is fucking groovy as hell. I don't prefer songs to sound the same their entire way through (something Deftones actually does A LOT, but it's cool), the back and forth between hard and soft really brings this track out and makes it a clear favorite of mine.
Kimdracula's riff is one of those ones that puts me in space.. I could listen to it for hours, and Chinos transcending voice combined with the screaming of "WISH," is great. When I'm high and this song is loud on my earphones, it makes me feel like Kyle in that episode of South Park where they were stealing the teeth for cash.. "I am everything, and I am NOTHING!"
Riviere really is a landmark track for Deftones. It literally sounds NOTHING like any previous Deftones song. Even if you don't like it, that gives it merit. The build up is great, the lyrics are great.. it's great.
Uuddlrlrselectstart is another one of those songs that just puts me on another plane of existance. Another I could listen to back to back. It just sounds cool as hell, and it's nice to get an instrumental every now and then, especially when it's as unique as this one.
Xerces... oh Xerces. Arguably one of my top 5 favorite Deftones songs of all time (that list changes almost daily tho). Same deal as Kimdracula, putting me in space, with the abrupt change in the chorus (tho not hard like Kimdracula's). Not one scream in this entire song, which is pretty tough for Deftones! Don't get me wrong I love me some Hexagram and Rickets is probably my favorite song of their ever... but Xerces just hits that right spot I have for a softer track. The lyrics really speak to me, too. Honestly sometimes I think Chino says more when he says less, and doesn't load a track full of a ton of ambiguous lyrics like on Adrenaline.
These 6 songs alone are enough to make me fall in love. Not to even mention Beware is solid, and Cherry Waves totally reinvents their whole sound... love that bassline.

I entirely agree with your view on Kimdracula, it does put you in space.I can only listen to it at night
