Yup, this was the opener on my pseudo-SNW.

Demo 5
Demo 9
Beware (Live sound)
Demo Cherry Waves
Demo 12
Demo 13
Demo 7
Buffalo (Live structure/sound)
Demo 15

That's my SNW.

before the release of snw everyone got 3 live versions, buffalo/finger of death, beware the water, and fm/rapture.... although buffalo is in its league of its own, all 3 tracks sounded good.

but what do they do? they got rid of that haunting sad noice in the chorus in beware the water,fm/rapture which sounded heavy and in yr face live, got transformated into light crappy version with bad vocals and irritating effects from frank.

and worst of all, they rejected buffalo, didnt even make the final cut on the album. worst decision ever. and all of the demos above... they clearly got more potential then all the crap on snw.

who are to blame here, deftones, chino, bob ezrin or is it shawn lopez? i want a scapegoat damnit although its been nearly 3 years since

Chino and Slow-pez. I don't blame Chino as much because the man has given us alot of great material, plus I think he was just going through a hard time at that period (divorce, drugs, etc.). He gets a pass. Slow-pez, on the other hand, doesn't. He told them to edit down Riviere and Kimdracula. Why? Two of the better songs on SNW, and he wants them shorter? Who the fuck is he?

Post by: jesusinabowlofdirt on Apr 18, 2009, 08:22 PM
i dunno a douche maybe. its kind of funny, its kind of sad- it started out with buffalo... long epic grand song... u hear of ezrin is going to produce the album, the man who did a lot of work with pink floyd.... of course u thought that now the songs will be in similar ways... they as band go to his studio and start working.

get your hopes up? no shit..

but in the end... its just chino and lopez in lopez his studio.... chino fucked up on speed and shaun says "here... let me take care of things".  such a sad ending. talk about anticlimax

Beware was kind of a leak from what I understand... The production of the inital track was awful...

Beware sounded so much better live on 18.02.2006. It was the first SNW material I heard - the mp3 on DeftonesWorld, and the dynamics sound way different. Abe's pounding the drums, the guitar and feedback is heavy as fuck, and Chino's verse guitar line isn't barely audible, so it isn't clogging up the simple tune. Oh, and the synth sounds more like a piano: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TziusqXQ9Fo&feature=channel_page (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TziusqXQ9Fo&feature=channel_page)

Abe's drums and the wailing chords and feedback make it sound like a Minerva-style, heavy tune, instead of the plastic, clean recording they released. That first chorus sounds like despair, and there's none of that on the record. I was hoping that this was the blueprint for SNW.

I never liked Rapture, I hate the verse music. As for Buffalo, well if Chino couldn't put lyrics on it, fair enough. I can live with the live version from '04. The SNW demo sounded pap anyway. Too many fucking harmonic picks in the verse by Stef made it monotonous. That and they added that stupid pop-metal bridge in around 3:14 and the Outro just isn't heavy enough. If they'd gone with that production I'd have been really disappointed.

One thing about the Cherry Waves demo is the nice weird intro instrument it has. Instead we got the Freak On A Leash synth on the actual album. But then the band reuse the old intro for this performance at Virgin Megastore FOR SNW's release. WTF? Its like admitting to the old intro being better:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edp2LbwXWb8&feature=PlayList&p=ED8FA8DD93A990F3&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=36

I think Chino really did get fucked up with Lopez and just let him do whatever to the production.

Rapture didnt get transformed into a light crappy version..cant u feel the intensity of the vocals and the riffs? And frank's effects near the end just makes the song a great closing. Some of those demos were great but others didnt have any potential compared to the new songs like kim dracula, rats!rats!rats!, although i agree buffalo should have made the final cut. Demo 5 should be completed and put on the their new album.

Some of the demos are pretty bare-boned and repetitive, probably because they were in very early stages. I agree that the live versions of Beware and Rapture were better than their studio counterparts, but Cherry Waves is a vast improvement over the demo, as is Combat and HITE.

Damn, so much good material wasted!  They could've taken all the 'best' tracks from the Bob Ezrin demo sessions (or at least just the ones that didn't really make the SNW cut), remastered them, maybe add some vocals too, then released that stuff as an E.P.  THAT shit would sell, even moreso if they say the proceeds would go towards helping Chi Cheng.  If they aren't already going to release some of it with the 'Eros' stuff that is...

Yep! I can live with that, speaking of demos. But even being a big fan.. im kind disappointed with them since SNW. When S/T came out and some ppl didnt like it i was totally in love with that shit. Even songs that didnt appear on the record like "Lovers" or the "If only tonight..." cover are at least thousand times better than any song after SNW era, IMO! Now sounds like they are OVER producing stuff (i think that the live true feeling that we had back in Adrenaline/ATF or even S/T is gone for good). Now sounds like repetitve stuff over and over again: Rapture, Rocket skates, etc. TBH the only new thing they are using latelly is the new tune. Lower and lower.. again, IMO.

I cant say the album will be a bad record but i didnt like the new song that much. Hopefully they'll me change my mind with the rest of the songs.

ps.: whoever said that Terry Date is a big part of the band.. i second that.

Agree with you Darksoul - I don't understand the hate SNW and DE is getting on this board.
If people stop comparing them to previos albums and give them a chance in their own right they may enjoy them more. I'm just thankful that Deftones have never released a bad album. I think that all of the albums are great in their own way.
It's funny to me how a lot of people say ''The demos are so cool, much better than anything off SNW or DE''. The demo's are so basic and bare and modt don't even have lyrics - we really have no idea how they'd sound as finished songs. I bet you if there DE demo's recorded people would be raving about how great they are and how everything else sucks. Sorry I just don't see anything special about the Ezrin demo's
Diamond Eyes and Rocket Skates have such sick, heavy riffs -if they were recorded as demo's, people on this site would be raving about them - far better riffs than any of these demos IMO.
In fact I think these were left in their present state for that exact reason, they had much better stuff recorded.
