Apparently that's the case.
Slipknot have begun to map out new shows following the cancellation of their previous tour plans as a result of band drummer Joey Jordison suffering a burst appendix. The new dates, which now feature Deftones as support, run as follows:
October 10th Auburn, WA - White River Amphitheatre
October 11th Kennewick, WA - Toyota Center
October 13th Portland, OR - Portland Memorial Coliseum
October 15th Vancouver, BC - Pacific Coliseum
October 16th Victoria, BC - Save On Foods Centre
October 18th Edmonton, AB - Shaw Conference Center
October 20th Calgary, AB - Calgary Corral
October 21st Spokane, WA - Star Theater
October 23rd San Jose, CA - San Jose University @ Event Center
October 24th Devore, CA - San Manuel Amphitheater ("SmokeOut Festival")

THE WORLD HAS ENDED
I thought they were a big enough band that they didn't have to open for anybody.
They might be less known than Slipknot, but that means nothing. Their music is better.
It's just funny that they always talk about "we've tried to distance ourselves from nu-metal" and then look who they are open for.
Well yeah doesn't mean they can't be friends with the guys. I mean one or two of them showed up for that tribute song, right? It's possible some of the members of Deftones are pals with some members of Slipknot. Plus it seems like Slipknot has respect for Deftones and they wouldn't mind having them on tour with them and Deftones probably wouldn't mind the shows.
I mean if I lived in any of those cities (or near by) I'd be very happy to see Deftones are playing a show, regardless of who plays with them (although sitting through Deadsy was pretty bad).
I'm not saying they will. But if you're trying to distance yourself from that scene why would you open for a band that is a part of it?
It's not that I have that big of a problem with it. Their touring, and that's all that really matters.
Yeah exactly. Right now I don't think they give a fuck who they play with, they just wanna get out there and play some shows, let off some steam! Then get back to releasing some new music because as Chino said, 'that shit is stomping!'
I highly doubt they care that much about the label today. Does anyone still throw around the term nu-metal these days?

Guess who books their shows.. Velvet Hammer/WBM... Yep, not their choice. Quite the high horse you're sitting on.
I will go, and immediately leave after the Deftones play.
A few things...
1.) Slipknot is bigger than the Deftones. Slipknot can headline arenas on its own. As much as we love Deftones, let's be realistic - it's hard for them to draw over 2000 people throughout the US (excluding LA, Sac, NYC, etc). Deftones are not middle-America music. Slipknot is, hence their bigger draw.
2.) No one cares about distancing the band from nu-metal anymore. Nu-metals dead, the scene is over - almost ten years ago. Hell, the Deftones co-headlined Family Values with Korn in 2006. Nothing new going on. Let it go.
3.) At least they're not opening for Daughtry, Creed, Nickelback, or any other truly deplorable "rock" act. Slipknot does have talent, despite their ostentatious presence. Love or hate the music, they put on a killer live show, and I think their audience will welcome the Deftones.
4.) Sharinglungs...VH/WMG does NOT book their shows! Their agent books their shows, of course, and that would be CAA. Welcome to the music industry.
FUCK YEAH CHONGO SHOULD WEAR A CLOWN'S MASK THAT'S BEEN COVERED IN SHIT AND DEAD BABY GUTS AND START TO GRUNT ABOUT NOT BEING UNDERSTOOD
lol
ewww
this shit...i mean deftones supporting for some band...
after wp and with s/t...they missed the "jump".
To be honest, I really don't care.
In my opinion, Deftones and Slipknot are as greatest as themselfs, and to me... see both bands together would be fucking amazing!!
I know that a lot of people will enjoy both shows as one.
Not like (almost) always that you only goes to see the main band.
That is bullshit opening for shitknot :S
Fuck those 9 assholes for 12 years old "metal" dudes.
I don't care!
Why? Why not tour on your own?
It's better to be around just Deftones fans at a show than being among a lot of Slipknot fans too...
Even if I still were a slipknot fan I think is not fair.
The good thing is that it'll get them some notoriety with younger metal fans.
not a big slipknot fan at all, but i see this as a realistic tour, i mean they can pretty much tour with anyone from cyprus hill to meshuggah and get away with it. (or you name two extremes.... you know what i mean). they have never really 'fit' into a pigeon hole.... and got away from nu-metal unscaved-ish. the numbers would be massive regarding potential punters. how many people are there that love the deftones...... + also love slipknot>??? i would think the majority of tones fans wouldn't double dip on that one...but maybe the majority of slipknot fans would? so really, you make most $$$$ of tours/merch and this would pull different groups of heads, within reason of course. completely believable. (ps - i would endure any support act to see the deftones, even if i got rick rolled with the act before or after) i just plainly wouldnt care and would pay up and go smoke up when whoever else was playing i wasnt that much of a fan of i guess... but that's just me.

true!
reminds me of when they put together Manson and Slayer on tour. ppl flipped out.....and still payed to make the tour successfull.
I think it's better then playing with 50 cent at bamboozle, as soon as deftones finished their set we bailed, but I would stay and enjoy the slipknot show for sure, just like i will at the Cypress Hill Smoke Out
Catching them on the 24th.
Who gives a shite.
Good on 'em. Slipknot are really just a band on their own now. They have surpassed all of the scene stuff and are now their own deal.
this is embarrassing.not only because slipknot sucks, but especially since chino called slipknot "mickey mouse club". bashing them as a band and now they open for them? my god.
chino should let stephen write all deftones songs and focus on the metal side of their music and they could draw a metal crowd themselves.with their team sleep approach with cherry waves, xerces etc and poppy style like hole in the earth and mein they try to attract pop rock audiences.problem is,their softer songs isnt that good so nooone cares.
focus on what yr good at,practice and develop your skillz insted
Deftones aint a metal band anyway. They are Deftones.
I get tired of alot of people trying to put them into some kind of Genre. They are one of those bands that rise above all of that like Radiohead or Muse.
Sounds cool. Sounds new. Wish I could attend. Always wanted to see Slipknot sometime.
the people at these shows are going to be complete asshole metal heads.
like family values, that place was a zoo. i love korn, but their fans look like freakin clowns, it was a freak show. the crowds are much more normal when deftones headline
hanging out with 'the maggots' will be brutal

I disagree. The songwriting in the Deftones is a collective effort. It's never been a one-man show. And what truly hurts your argument is White Pony, the album that brought the Deftones to the masses, and also the album that Chino started playing guitar and writing songs in a significant way. I'm not saying Chino should write all the songs, and I agree Xerces and Cherry Waves are weak sauce. But handing the reigns over to one band member won't fix things. Many bands, and creative folk at large, experience a lull in their creativity as their careers progress. Sometimes it takes a huge event or an overdue break to recharge the juices. I think we're at that pivotal moment where the deftones are a band born anew. I think you'll agree.

lol...in my way of seeing things...maybe slipknot just invited the deftones to join them and I dont see one reason for the guys not to acept it...they can sit their asses until the album gets released or they can do some show's...so why not do it ?

they opened for linkin park and LB in 03, Chino was pissed about it too. he just knows they should be bigger than those bands, and they were MAJOR influences on them. frustration. kinda how dave mustaine could never enjoy megadeth's success, cause metallica did much better

Linkin Park has a one of the largest followings for a rock group these days.......they have to be doing something right..... mike shinoda is very talented, and for those of u that say he's not thats fucking dumb. Chester's whatever, but MIke is a smart guy. I think the deftones are 100 times better and deserve so much more but I cant hate on LP

For years I've been a lurker here at Sharing Lungs, but I'd figure I'd say something on a topic that kinda caught my interest.
I've been a Deftones fan since 2000. Heard My Own Summer back in '99, put that on a burned CD, but didnt think much of them. White Pony came out, and I was hooked. Till this day (despite the album delays), they are my number 1 favorite band, and will always be until the day I day. Now having said that...
Last year I started getting into Slipknot...big time. I first heard them back in the late nineties with "Wait and Bleed" and while the song was somewhat cool, the whole mask and 9 members thing just seemed like a big sham. The overly "goth" aspect as well as the lacking melodies turned me off from the band and that was that.
Being extremely picky with music, there were only a select bands I could listen to, I'd say 5 at the most. But when I went to expand my musical taste last year, I realized that I'd been missing a shit ton of awesome music that was of course, Slipknot.
To me, Corey Taylors vocals are awesome...visceral, carnal, and the lyrics grab you. But that's now what makes me crazy about them...its the pure guitar work and drums. As much as I love Slipknot, I don't think ANYONE here can deny that Mick Thomson and Jim Root's guitar work are leaps and bounds greater than Stephen Carpenters. It hurts to say, but they are much more technical and diverse than Carpenter, and it really shows on their latest album "All Hope is Gone". Now before I get bombarded with "NO, THEY JUST CHUG", you need to listen to more than just "wait and bleed". Give songs like "Sulfur", "Psycosocial", "Opium of the People" a listen. I honestly consider them to be the two best guitarists in metal, and for Joey, can anyone honestly match his drumming?
What I can't understand is how people say "slipknot sucks". While some may think their masks are a big gimmick (nowadays, their awesome, and extremely well crafted), or some say their nu-metal (because they're on MTV every now and again?), I completely disagree. When you have a vocalist that can not only pump out quality screams, but can churn out awesome melody, tack that onto mind-blowing riffs and solos, backed by some of the best drum work in the metal industry, you have amazing records.
Wow, I feel like some guy writing a review on Amazon...anyway. Deftones rule...do I like them better than Slipknot, fuck yea I do. Are they more technically proficient and as skilled....errrrm, I'm gonna go with no. But to say that their "bad" because they're different, or because they don't have self-interpretive lyrics is just not right. I feel like Slipknot is a band that's automatically agreed to be hated on because they're "too mainstream" or "not 'deep' enough". You can't put these guys on the same level as horrid bands like Nickelback or Saving Abel.
Just my .02.

dude. first of all thats a matter of opinion that heavy deftones songs are better. if anything I'd say your wrong as no one in the deftones can really play metal besides steph and he never plays anything complex or hard enough to be called metal. Chino cant scream like he used to and hes no bruce dickinson when he sings melodies. more of a robert smith or morrissey . plus if Deftones only wrote heavy songs theyd be the worst live band ever. Chino cant scream as well live anymore and if all he did was scream like he does in heavy songs then hed probly end up yelling or eagle screaming more often than actual screams live.
Slipknot should call deftones mickey mouse if were talking heaviness.
plus dude. most metalheads I know really dont like deftones why you ask? Chino. and a lack of solos. why do I love deftones? more or less the same reasons.
so I would say focus on what your good at, deftones, and play whatever music you feel.

its not like stephen hit a chord on the guitarr and chino says "the next chord should be hits one" and then abe says "oh! oh! the next chord should be this one!"
they bring their own songs to the table and then work on them as a group.im just saying they should work on the stephen songs. chinos songs on wp was way better than on snw but it kinda feels that he's not the guy who can write 30 totally different songs, when he tries again it will sound about they same so he has to steo out of his box but then it gets bad. I think you'll agree
