Title: My attempt at Rocket Skates
Post by: Ponte506 on Nov 09, 2009, 05:32 PM
Well, I spent pretty much all of last night obsessing over how to play Rocket Skates, and obviously from the severe lack of good shots of Stephen playing as well as a really clear audio sample, it proved to be quite a challenge, ESPECIALLY the super bassy intro.  But, after being confident that I figured out what he was playing, I decided to upload it:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oRenMpEFN1U&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oRenMpEFN1U&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Obviously some minor errors and timing mistakes, plus I might be playing sections of the song in the wrong order, but I think you guys get the picture.

Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated.  Let's try and tackle this song  :)

Awesome job, man! Actually made me appreciate the song more than the videos, now that I can actually hear the riff clearly.
Extra points for the Boba Fett helmet.  ;D

Would you happen to know what the tuning would be on a six-string? If that's even possible?

Yup, for a six-string the tuning would be BEADGB.  Make sure you got some thick ole strings on there!  My suggestion if its a 6 string, non baritone:

11, 15, 18, 28, 38, 58.  That's right, a 58 on the 6th string.  Why?  Because it has a very fat sound to it, and it'll help retain that drop B a lot better than a standard gauge string.  This is the exact string set up Mick Thompson from Slipknot uses, and it's awesome on my Ibanez 6 string.

The strings I got are already pretty fat, but I long since discarded the package, so I'm not sure of the gauge.  But it should suffice.

Now I just need to find that electric tuner...don't judge. >_>;

Thanks man, I'll tell you what, trying to hook up all those pedals to the board, getting it routed right through the Decimator noise suppressor honestly took hours...hope I never have to do that shit again.

Appreciate all of the positive feedback.  I'm REALLY itching for this album, and what sucks is we have NO singles, no promos, nothing.  I think the only taste of "New Album" we'll be getting are a barrage of Rocket Skates clips recorded live at the upcoming shows till album release.  Who knows, maybe they'll play something new.

I'm hoping for one of those "Hole in the Earth" type of deals they had on their myspace a few months before the album dropped.  God, hearing a new single right off the album on their myspace would make my fucking day.

Since we're on the subject of tabs, does anyone here happen to know the tabs for Finger of Death? I can't find it anywhere on the net, so I figured this site would be my only other option.

What are the gauges of yours, sc607 I guess? Is it baritone guitar or not?
Can I have a few suggestions from you? What strings should I get if I want to have a G# tuning on sc207? As well as having enough tension of dropped G# (lowest string dropped to F#) sometimes.

I have the SC607 which is a Baritone.  I used to have the "budget" sc207, but I sold that when I wanted the full tone potential the 607 has.  For what gauge to use, just get the purple Ernie Ball 7 string pack at your guitar center.  Since the 207 isn't Baritone, you'll find your strings getting out of tune pretty frequently.

As far as tabs, it'll be a while before I can actually post some.  Tomorrow I'm off to WLC (Warrior Leadership Course), some lame Army leadership program newly promoted Sergeants (me) have to go to.  I'll be gone for 15 days...boooo.

Go for it, it's well worth it.  The quality is sound is night and day (the 607 is neck thru, while the 207 is bolt on).  Plus, the 607 comes with EMG pickups, and the baritone gives it that extra "chunk".

Hi guys, this is my first post but I've been checking this board for a while now since it's the best place to find Deftones news and stuff. Anyway, Ponte506, your video inspired me to tab out this song last night when I really should have been sleeping/studying. Tab's for a six string, I'm playing it on a crappy Squier strat but it still sounds pretty cool. I've uploaded the tab to ultimate-guitar (with a credit of course) but I'm not sure it's actually been put through, which is fine cause I'm gonna post it here and if anyone has any pointers/corrections then let me know and I'll post the updated one on there instead.

12/8

On this last bar Steph plays something at the high end of the (I think middle) strings, I’m not entirely sure what (I’m working with mostly poor quality/incomplete videos). I suggest just playing this though:

     h + q     h + q
B|-----------------------------|
G|-----------------------------|
D|---14---------14----------|
A|----14---------14---------|

I’m not certain about the last bar off this riff (3). Looking at the video it looks like Steph puts little variations in at various points, but they all seem to be some combination of 0-2-3-5-6. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the following; my personal favourite is the first one (6h0-5-0--0) but feel free to experiment, they all sound good.:

Version 1                 Version 2
   e e e q  e e e e q  e        e e e q  e e e e q  e
B|-------------------------------|-------------------------------|
G|-------------------------------|-------------------------------|

B|-----------------------------------|----------------------------------|
G|-----------------------------------|----------------------------------|
D|-----------------------------------|----------------------------------|
A|-----------------------------------|----------------------------------|
E|-----------------------------------|----------------------------------|
B|-6p0-5-3-2-0-6p0-5-3-2-0-|-6p0-6-3-2-0-6p0-6-3-2-0-|

Version 5

B|----------------------------------|
G|----------------------------------|
D|----------------------------------|
A|-----------------------------------|
E|-----------------------------------|
B|-6p0-0-3-2-0-6p0-0-3-2-0-|

Riff 4
Same thing goes for the parts of this riff beginning with a 6p0, I’ve tabbed out what I think it is below – I’m more certain about this than Riff 3 however.

        (e)(q)(q)(q)(q)
   e e e q  e  q  q  q   x3         e e e e e e e e e e e e
B|------------------------------|o|------------------------------------|
G|------------------------------|o|------------------------------------|
D|------------------------------|o|------------------------------------|
A|------------------------------|o|-----------------------------------|
E|----------2--2----2--2-----|o|-----------------------------------|
B|-6p0-5-0--0—-0--0-----|o|-6p0-0-3-2-0-6p0-0-3p2p0-|
P.M.        -  -  -  -

Order:
Riff 1: x6
Riff 2.1
Riff 2.2
Riff 2.1
Riff 2.3
Riff 3: x4
Riff 4: x2
Riff 2.1
Riff 2.2
Riff 2.1
Riff 2.3
Riff 3: x4
Riff 4: x2
Riff 2.1
Riff 2.2
Riff 2.1
Riff 2.3 without the high strings played, followed by silence
Riff 3: x4
Riff 4: x2
Riff 2.1
Riff 2.2
Riff 2.1
Riff 2.2
Riff 2.1

At this point it may either go straight to 2.3 or 2.2, I don’t know cause none of the live videos that I’ve seen capture the ending – if someone knows then let me know, same goes for any corrections or if you know the specifics of Riff 3. I know the tabs a bit vague in places but it’s my first attempt at tabbing anything and I think it pretty much nails it – though, as said before, the credit is mainly due to Ponte506. Also sorry about the ugliness of some of it, what can I say, it looks alright in the UG font.

EDIT: here it is, http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/d/deftones/rocket_skates_tab.htm, it's got it listed as created by 'unregistered' so should be able to post a new one if I figure it out. I'm also starting to think that riff three should be 6p03200 6p03200... I guess it's just another possibility to add to the list anyway.

Awesome work Ponte506!!
It pretty much sounds as the song!
Now you can watch the live version played at Brazil to check it in structure and that.. it has better sound!

@ the one wanting FOD tabs:
I've uploaded a video of me playing it on youtube, check my channel, and if you're not sure of it, I can (with a little of time) write down the tabs.
It's pretty easy, and the tuning is BFBdon't remember the rest lol  ::) ... but check the video, to figure it out. It DOES say the tuning i'm playing.
