Title: Rockets Skates = Hole in the Earth?
Post by: mandalay on Dec 10, 2009, 11:34 PM
Does anyone else hear a distinct similarity in the riffs of Rocket Skates (verse) and "Hole in the Earth" (opening riff)?

Stephen begins the verse of "Rocket Skates" (0:10) with seven punchy quarter notes with the last one extending:
YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U15-b7TTuFQ#)

Likewise, Hole in the Earth opens with four punchy quarter notes with the last one extending again.
YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0awt8wOJ6M#)

I love "Rocket Skates" but damn the similarity is jarring.  I think the opening/chorus riff is one of Steph's sickest though!

[EDIT: I cannot get youtube embedding to work for some reason.  Has this been disabled?  I put the youtube code (after the "v=") b/w the forum's youtube brackets, and it looks fine in preview, but it's not posting).]

I realized the same today when I was travelling by bus. Plus, that part of the riff on both songs  goes on block with Abe's part. Kind of a new deftones signature, I guess.

:|... HITE a masterpiece? I think not... it's barely a good song at best...

"There's a hole in the earth, I'm out."
lather rinse repeat.

hole in the earth was a major disappointment when i first heard it. it's since grown on me and i really do enjoy the song but on the deftones scale of awesomeness it's not even close to the top.

Hole in the earth sounds like deftones trying to sell out, and failing bad.

i'd fall into this school of opinion on HITE.
it's very average, and like he also said, there's 8-9 better songs on that album.

...and some of the songs in the Bob Ezrin Demo Sessions trump most of those...but let's not get into that, just IMHO...

I feel like HITE has some mystique to it, like this song is really important somewhat. I dig the fact that it's telling the story of how the band was near breaking up, I totally feel like this song sometimes.

when i watch the rocket skates recording, it feels soo close to a studio version, did they mention anythin about having the same approach as eros? As in, all recording together instead to combining separate parts?

Shat that video of Rocket Skates sounds good. I like how rough those riffs are and Chino sounds damn good. I hope we get that nice powerful squeal at the end of his screaming on the album version. I want at least one good squeal on this album.

how's hole in the earth a sellout? compare it to catchy-ness of digital bath or change, or a lot of other (overrated) white pony material, be quiet and drive.., that shit is a lot more radio friendly or what. those actually were some sort of hits so it proves.

and yeah i noticed the similarity on first listen. doesnt bother me enough.
