All this backlash i've been seeing lately. Some of you act like its their worst album. 'It was to over produced. Too commercial. All those songs suck.' Why? Oh, Cuz it wasn't white pony 2. Just like when the s/t came out. Its not my favorite, but Damn at least acknowledge that it has some awesome work on there.
Hole In The Earth and Beware are good but the rest is bollox IMO.
It doesn't have awesome work on there. Every song, the lyrics repeat themselves. The vocals are horrible on it. The drums were alright.

Overall it's my least favorite album...I guess...but it has some of my favorite songs on it. Beware especially.
how many times can the same thread be made. we've all had this argument a million times. i personally love every single deftones album, SNW is different but i don't understand the hate. like it if you want, hate it if you want. Kimdracula is one of my all time favorite songs so whatever. it works for me.

yeah it's completely underrated. if you wanted white pony part 2 you'll never get it because deftones realize that repeating yourself is just plain retarded.

I don't think that's the main problem - in my eyes (or rather, ears) SNW is the closest tied to WP of all their albums. this might be a wild guess, but I'm under the impression that most of the hate for SNW comes from the same people who think Chino should still write songs where the chorus goes "Suck suck suck... (x12)".

personally i have no idea what people are talking about when they say snw sounds "polished" i think it sounds like a crappy demo. and the way chino sings,omg.. sounds like he's taking a huge fucking dump while he sings. squeezing a big one out
Yeah, it just doesn't "sound" good to me... It's stupid to call it too polished because every album since Around the Fur has been super polished. I would never say I hate SNW (Combat is awesome) but I just don't ever listen to it anymore.
I am totally against this thread, Self-titled was more of a one dimension album compared to Saturday Night wrist. Im not sayin its bad but im tryin to compare it in terms of creativity. SNW had more depth in the music and lyrics. Despite the harsh times the band went thru, it seemed like more effort and emotions are felt in the songs compared to ST which is heavy, but not appealing to listen to as SNW is diverse and in way, each song has a different story behind it with complementing music.
Man, I don't get the snw hate either! Mein and pink cell both blow, hard. The rest of that album is absolutely amazing. FAR better than adrenaline IMO! I think it is just not "hard enough" for a lot of people on here... I don't see how anybody who likes team sleep can dislike this album.
I agree that the album is vastly underrated. I may be wrong but I thin wp, st and snw are all the same on metacritic (not that it means much). Critics always underrate the deftones. How wp is not on every single best of the decade list I will NEVER understand, especially when I see some of the other shit on those lists... The strokes is this it is a great record but it is no wp and it is in all the top 5's.
The only song I listen to from this era is the Xerces Demo. I like Kimdracula too.
I love SNW. Great album but just difficult to 'get'.

to be honest i just didnt like the way those songs sound with shawn lopez working on them. I'd like to hear the entire cd mixed by Terry Date.. i wonder sometimes if we would noticed a big difference.

I actually heard it on its enitrety today. SNW sometimes enters in my top 3 deftones albums.
the MH review of DE said it's Chino's best vocal performance. i'd say s/t is his worst vocal performance, pitch wise, and song structure wise, he seemed to have writers block on some tracks. the lyrics were good as usual. on snw he sounds alot better
late 2000-2001 he had serious vocal damage, i can't hold it against him. but i'm talking albums here, his worst vocal performance is s/t. i'm not saying he sucked, cause he did fine, just the worst by his standards
i think the most intense, loud, strong, heartfelt screams he's done are at the end of dai the flu. damn, that song is so great. my favorite screams he's done

dont forget that adrenaline is a million times better too. but none of their records is especially hard to get, ALL of their albums is easy to get.
It might have 'Previous Deftones Album Syndrome' where the last record is liked more when the latest one comes out.

Nice perspective, there was backlash at the S/T after some time and the same for SNW.
Who knows, maybe those who backlash will rediscover SNW like the S/T after time.
Personally I love both records; though after they started playing When Girls Telephone Boys live I rediscoverd the record due to finally focussing on Frank. And currently, I listen to SNW the least.
Pink Cellphone is a great track. just sayin'. Lucky You on the other hand.... bleh.

Pink cellphone was completly out of place, lucky you seems more fitting on the album.
Teenager is million times better than both though.

yeah i also hate it quite a bit. half of that album should have been replaced with other stuff like lovers, drive, to have and to hold, like linus, etc. so many other songs deserved to be on there over sinatra, some of the acoustic stuff, black moon, wax and wane (personal opinion) and this version of teenager. not my cup of tea. i remember being rather disappointed at the track list upon first look.

as did i. it'd just be nice to see it properly done someday. the dvd was just fine for what i was expecting but some bonus stuff would have been nice. live stuff is just too much to ask from these guys it seems. hopefully someday a PROPER deftones dvd happens. live in hawaii is just fine but the people making it obviously didn't know anything about the band. my ultimate wish would be for "entertain us" to finally be released but we all know that's not going to happen ever. fuck WMG and maverick.
They're different, but I like both albums and I don't understand all this hate for SNW. I just hate Rats!Rats!Rats! with a passion, it reminds me a LOT of Korn, and I can't stand them. Mein... Well, the video sucks as hell, but the song is not that bad, Serj's part is completely useless, anyway, it seems like it's simply pasted to a random song. I even like Pink Cellphone! By the way, I only recently realized that on my CD there is not the last part, the one about germs and... other stuff. Does anyone know why? is it a censored version or what? :-\

yeah, a clean version and an explicit version were released. personally, while the explicit version is funny the first few times around, I much prefer the clean version.
anyway, I really seem to be in a minority when it comes to SNW: HITE is one of my favorite Deftones songs, I really like Mein (although Serj shouldn't have been in it), I find Xerces to be rather boring, I like Pink Cellphone and think it fits perfectly on the album... overall I love the record and find it so much more engaging and well-written than S/T.

I guess that was because the studio cover is rather boring, while the live version is the best cover deftones ever did and they may not have any of those brilliant performances in a nice enough quality.
My problem with SNW is its not cohesive. like diamond eyes the songs flow well S/T does too. "its the same sound"
I like the first half of snw its just after mein i dont like it very much except riviere. SNW is no S/T.

S/T is more cohesive
SNW is more scrapped together IMO it has some good songs but it sounds like they threw it together. Even the artwork photos used old band pics

I can't say I hate this record, this is not true:
Riviere, Xerces, Beware, Rapture, Combat, Cherry Waves...
There's really good songs in SNW but I don't like the sound of this one and I don't really like the "pop" mood.
I love this record but it's just not my favorite.
I think everyone has a different reason why they like the Deftones... angst, melody, experimental, single musician, overall sound blah blah.
In all honesty I was hyped and disappointed when S/T and SNW came out. Didn't like them all too much because I was too obsessed with Adrenaline, Around the Fur and White Pony, which to me (then) were the critical summits that made me appreciate this band.
After mania, years of heavy drug addiction, and maturity I love both of these albums just like their predecessors. Each is a chronicle to their time and achievement of art with it's contrasting beauty. I can no longer just pick one as everyone has a correlating fever that makes it special.
Back to my original statement... some people got into the Deftones during the anger fulled years, others during the White Pony era and whenever else... so each album will automatically be compared to that person's introduction or reasons for loving the Deftones.
Deftones Syndrome never lets me down.
I like SNW more than I did before hearing Diamond Eyes.
It's happened to me on every single album (minus Adrenaline obviously, because of no album before it)
I get how it flows now too..... never really got it before.
The record feels exactly like it's recording process has been described.
