I think between the lead up the SNW and now, I've gotten more used to grabbing everything from the internet. Everything leaks and having something before it's release is pretty much the norm now. I put up much less of a fight this time.
I'm holding out--haven't listened to Rocket Skates (well, I heard the live version twice) or Diamond Eyes yet either. The album will be completely fresh and full CD quality for me in May. I have to admit that it won't be easy though.

Haha I was about to make a topic just like this. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Like someone else said, I've only heard Rocket Skates. I'm not even going to listen to Diamond Eyes. One song before release is enough.

last time i held out till the release date for deftones was white pony. well, half of WP. when i bought the album i still hadn't heard digital bath, teenager, knife party, passenger, pink maggit and the boy's republic. it was nice to have some suprises that day. only heard elite 2 days early cause friends pressured me. i wanted to hear it all badly, but had a old school sense that i should wait. now i've lost that completely and see no point in waiting, and DL their stuff asap, and still buy it day 1 as always. basically no method is better than the other as long as you buy the album
You guys who are holding out have my UPMOST respect... Seriously. You guys are in for a treat, cuz this album is stellar. I'm buying a copy for everyone in my town when it comes out.

Only heard rocket skates so far - but i'm going to hold out on the rest...it leaking this early has definitely made my life one million times harder...but it'll be worth the wait...especially now that i've read how solid the album is.

Haha, I'm always on a bizarre quest for the perfect listening conditions whenever Deftones come out with a new album. When SNW came out, I took the bus, and bought the album, a new pair of nice headphones, and a walkman. When I got back to the room, I locked the door (my roommate was a VERY smelly guy, and I didn't want him coming in unexpectedly), closed the blinds, turned off the lights, and got ready to listen. The problem was it was a bitch of a hot day in Massachusetts, especially in my crappy dorm, so, on my quest for undivided and undisturbed listening perfection, I stripped down to my boxers and set up a fan at the bottom of my bed for optimal temperature conditions, haha. It was worth the opportunity to hear the album without any interruptions or distractions, haha, so don't judge me Sharing Lungs, don't judge me.

(oh, and just to make it a bit harder for you - as pumped as I was when I first heard Rocket Skates, IMO it's the weakest song on the album)

i listen to Rocket Skates now and then or watch the video, and I've listened to Diamond Eyes ONLY 4 times, from the one that was with the interview, and that's it.
I'll wait, but i don't know if i'll listen to it the week before their show here in Mexico (April) to know the songs, or listen the songs live and then listen them on the album...
but i think i can wait until April to make a decission ::) and listen now an then ONLY Rocket Skates or something they release officially.

I remember when I bought White Pony, I read the whole booklet before listening to it. It was my first taste of Deftones and I couldn't imagine how the band could such crazy imagery into a song. Haven't read the lyrics either, though I'd be most willing to do that. I'm afraid if I read a play by play of the album I'll work up some expectations of how the songs will/should sound, which is never a healthy thing to do in my experience--I'm likewise afraid I'll know where the dynamics are going from song to song, which might ruin it for me as well. Lyrics though, hrmmm, I hadn't thought about it. If I'm going all out though, I suppose I might as well just wait on those too, lol. I don't have a logical reason to not read them though, just going with the flow I guess.

I waited for both S/T and SNW to come out officially before I listened to them. I liked the suspension it built and I simply wanted the whole experience with album cover and everything. but neither felt really worth it. I don't think I would've liked either album more or less if I hadn't waited.
and this time around the leak came so early that I just couldn't stay away. I found it friday morning and I was just about to go to my old hometown to drink with friends and play music, so I pretty damn excited to hear it. and it put me in a damn good mood throughout the weekend. besides that, it would be pretty hard for me to not listen to it seeing as how I kinda have to read through all threads and posts here and with all the discussion about the songs I would inevitably form some sort of expectations and opinions two months early. and I didn't want that.

I didn't mean to suggest that I know any of the specifics for the show, but I find it safe to assume it will be somewhere in California. I was planning on being home in California from the 16th to the 21st, which would have been perfect for release-show-going, but I don't think I can swing a random Tuesday right before finals week. I know my discontent here is selfish though, haha, and I'm glad we all get the album sooner than later.

It's not about getting that "I listen to it for the first time" feeling back. It's about that feeling you have, when you get the actual album, holding it in your hands, listening to it and going through the booklet. And I don't want that moment with a feeling of "urghs, i've listened to that album way too much already", you know?

There's just something special about getting that album in your hands, spending the effort to unwrap it from it's shitty plastic cover...feeling the click of the CD snapping into your CD player, then the spin of it when you hit play. Listening with really good headphones in full quality, no distractions, trying to take in everything at once. The whole experience is what I'm looking forward to. Anywho, enough day dreaming, haha--40 days.

Went over to a friend's place on Saturday as he was having a bunch of people over. Spent the entire time berating him since he had heard Diamond eyes and he kept on saying how awesome it is. Needless to say, I went home with my head low and tempted to download the leak. It's like he was in on this secret that I was aching to know about...but am still hanging in there - so Matt - I know the feeling.
Just download it. When you buy it, the album will be just as amazing as the first time you heard it. It will be like hearing it for the first time again.

Taking the day off from work and I'm bringing in my bands full light set up in to a 12 by 12 room. Hooking up four top of the line speakers in each corner (For true LOUD stereo) Wine, Weed, Sushi. It will be insane. Me and a couple of friends buying the album the second the store opens and sitting around enjoying a 4 year wait by being suprised track by track ALL day long. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. lol. Ya, I wish I were as strong as you guys to hold out, but I just couldnt wait. Been playing it most days when I'm on the mountain riding. Still I can't wait for May so I can go to the record store and buy that shit; O and getting to see them play the songs live for the first time. yeah only heard rocket skates so far - really fighting not to listen to Diamond Eyes - somehow hearing the album as a whole always works better - like I did when white pony first came out. If i had listened to Change a million times before the album came out...I think it would have ended up being ''too familiar''' while listening to the entire album. It kind of kills that 'cohesiveness' when a song sticks out like that...especially with an album as tight as White Pony.

If it makes you feel better, I allowed myself to listen to "Diamond Eyes", so I could watch the video. I tried watching the video on mute, but it made no sense. So I turned on the volume and enjoyed it. Been stuck in my head all day long. There's this one part where Chino sings "once and for all" right before the chorus, and it sounds epic!

a friend of mine who was really into the deftones for the longest time...stopped listening to them after the Self Titled album...and he barely said anything when I had mentioned that Saturday Night Wrist was out back in 2006. And then yesterday, he writes to me saying 'Diamond eyes' is one of their best albums ...
so that just makes these next 19 days that much tougher.

if the album is that good - I'd much rather hear a clear and crisp CD copy of it...along with the leaflet, etc. I'm sure the Deftones Team put a decent amount of thought and effort into the entire feel of the album - the look, the sound, and of course the vibe they've created in all the weeks leading up to the release....so getting that CD in my had will be the accumulation of all that. You can't beat that with a folder on a hard drive.
I'm starting to wish I had waited too. I wore the album out already. it's not that I'm sick of it, every time I put it on I'm still amazed by its greatness. but I've been kinda busy with other albums lately and this one has had to take the backseat.
but on the other hand, it got to be the soundtrack to a couple of the most awesome weekends I've had in years.

If it makes you feel better, I allowed myself to listen to "Diamond Eyes", so I could watch the video. I tried watching the video on mute, but it made no sense. So I turned on the volume and enjoyed it. Been stuck in my head all day long. There's this one part where Chino sings "once and for all" right before the chorus, and it sounds epic!
same here, watched the video like 3 times, and had that chorus all over my head, then on the radio i heard the intro and said WTF!!!! :o

All I can say about listening to it or not, is that everyone is going to have their own way to do things. Whatever makes one feel best about the music and what he or she is doing, is whatever one should do. It's all good, we're going to have a new Deftones album incredibly soon. My heart beats faster just thinking about it! I haven't heard a single song from the album yet, nor have I read any song reviews or descriptions--the anticipation of the possibilities is absolutely astounding, I'm stoked!

The Deftones have a countdown as well, and I don't see how the concept is at all offensive. The point of me counting down is not to convey pleasure in myself for waiting, but rather pleasure that the waiting is almost over. I am not one to boast, in life or on message boards, and you won't find me doing so at any time. I have openly expressed that I don't have anything against those who didn't wait, and that in my opinion downloading it or not is not a dilemma of ethics. Keeping that in mind, what do I have to boast about? I hold those who downloaded the album, and those waiting for it both in the same regard, and am only waiting to buy it in order to enhance my own satisfaction when first listening to the album. It's not a matter of being "cool," or gaining respect, it's a matter of being excited that the album I'm waiting for is almost here, plain and simple. I don't see why you would take enough issue with that to try and bring it down, regardless of how one chooses to express it.

Hearing a song live, for some reason, doesn't seem the same as listening to recordings (even of a live performance). I heard Beware live, for example, at a couple shows before I listened to SNW. While I can say I was INCREDIBLY stoked to hear it, come album time, I barely recognized which song I had heard. The feel and sound of songs live and in person is very different from the same songs listened through headphones. Further than that, with huge crowds and excitement going on all around, discerning individual parts of songs and instruments is really difficult live. I basically sing and scream along at shows because I know the songs, but if I didn't, in general, I feel like I'd have nearly no clue how the songs went after the show was over. That being said, you CAN get a good feel of songs in relation to album versions listening to live recordings, which I haven't done, save listening to Rocket Skates two times when videos of it first hit YouTube. In retrospect, that is even going to kill it a little for me, as the song was super catchy and repetitive, and I still remember how it goes, haha.

FUCKING HELL! I like a moron pre-ordered my copies through Warner Bros. And now they've shipped but they're telling me it might take 5-6 weeks to arrive. What the fuck??! I maybe be all the way accross the globe...but we're in the 21st century for christ's sake. You'd think a week tops...but 5-6 weeks? I should have been smarter and gone with Amazon....that too Amazon-Germany.

P.S. that's complete moose-caca punkflop, you could travel around the world literally dozens of times in 6 weeks, they must be bringing you your album via donkey and dolphin. You should pick up another copy in the meantime, it couldn't hurt to have two!

Yeah, man. This is great. My record store used to have new releases the weekend before the Tuesday of release but they've since stopped doing that I'm pretty sure. I've got a mind to go check anyway even if it is a 20 minute drive. I would love to have it on the weekend and be able to enjoy it without having to go to work right after I listen to it as will be the case if I have to wait til Tuesday. Either way, I'm pretty excited for it.
I don't tend to pre-order but it sometimes pays off. I like to shop at CD Stores to do my bit to keep them going.
thanks for the sympathy brother...really been irritated about the entire ordeal. Been holding out...and now having to wait another few weeks is just ridiculous. Unfortunately in India, the availability of music - in stores at least...is quite minimal and limited. I mean you get more mainstream music like Kings of Leon ...but Deftones - no way in hell. Although I did find the Something for the Masses tribute album when it first came out - that was a gem of a find! However...while I wait it out for my order...have gotten my local DVD library guy to hopefully get a copy shipped in...and my pilot friend to maybe pick up a copy from London...hahaha...so hopefully I've got all bases covered. I'm going to be a very sad man if I don't hear this album on the 4th.
i may have downloaded the leak, i may have downloaded the bonus tracks, and I might not have forked out any cash on this album yet but you can bet your ass I'll be at best buy as soon as they open tuesday.

So who held strong? I tried the crust, but didn't taste the pie. I listened to Rocket Skates and watched the Diamond Eyes video. I also saw the scans of the album booklet. But that's it.
I've listened to Rocket Skates (way too many times) and seen the scans of the album booklet. I regret seeing them though. Other then that, it will all be new to me :)

That's almost exactly how I experienced S/T on May 20th 2003.
I just got mine tonight around 9:30 PM at that record store I mentioned in my last post. Listened to it once. Don't even know how to begin reviewing it. I need to listen a few more times. I know I feel pretty good about it but I just more time with it. It was a nice first listen though.
I'm in class now twitching to get out and get this album. I bought (but haven't listen to) the three bonus tracks on iTunes, got new batteries for my headphones and CD player, and am ready to run out of here and pick it up right at 10:45. Holy donut-holes I'm happy.

Well I just finished my second listen, which I had via CD player, yes, lol. When I first listened to it, I really wasn't sure what to think. I did know for sure that people comparing it to Around the Fur or White Pony (sonically at least) were insane, haha. After that first listen, I was afraid none of the songs stuck to me...meaning to say that I felt like they might not have been well enough stand-alone songs. The second listen was MUCH, and I mean MUCH better. This time, I listened to it with the booklet in hand, reading the lyrics as they were sung. The feel of the individual songs, as well as the album as a whole really set in much better. I will say that I wish some of the lyrics weren't as rhyme driven as they are--but then, in some strange way, it feels appropriate for them to be. I don't know what the consensus is on any of these songs as I haven't read anyones personal opinions or reviews of them, so please don't tear into me if this is a song here that everyone seems to love, haha, but the low point of the album for me, right now at least, is CMND/CTRL. I just feel like Risk accomplishes everything this song wants to, but in a much cooler way. There's something about Prince as well that didn't feel as great as the rest of the album--but there are elements to that song that make me think I'll like it more the more I hear it. This all could change, obviously, but that's just the impression I get after two listens. I'm also a little unsure of This Place is Death as a closing track. I like the song, I'm just not sure it's the best choice for a closer. And my last critique would be, well, does anyone else feel like this album should be about 5 songs longer? Haha, I can't help but wish there were more songs on this sucker. But, overall, I'm really digging this. I'm going to have to listen to it more, obviously, to form any sort of lasting opinions or bond with the album or individual tracks, but listening to it that second time, I had goosebumps through most of it. I hope nothing above gives off the impression that I didn't like the album, because I can already tell I'm not going to stop listening to it for some time now, haha, and I really appreciate the band for always taking their stuff in new directions. I have to be honest, this album feels more mainstream than I had expected, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Diamond Eyes as an album is entirely different from anything they've done in my opinion, and that album to album change is what always makes it an experience to have their albums grow on you, and to have them nestle their way into your mind's catalogue of all the other great things the Deftones have given us over the years. I'm absolutely glad I got to listen to this fresh, for anyone considering waiting next time, given that similar circumstances present themselves come their next release. I can't wait to finish writing this and listen to the album some more, and I'm so very glad to have it now, finally. Happy listening everyone, and I hope waiting let you have the experience with the album that you were hoping for.

I'm really excited about everything happening with the release of the album today...but I can't help feeling low since I'm still waiting for my cd in the mail. And I'm not going to give into Itunes after waiting 2 months without listening to the album...just so I can have it in my hands blaring on my stereo. And fucking Warner bros uses the worst shipping possible to mail me my album. I was hoping after all this time spent on sharing lungs and dissecting the web for anything even remotely related to the Deftones, that i'd be able to share this one with you guys. Fucking lame - i can see why CD's are a dying breed and people are just impatient and want to download music for free. It's sad really. Spent 20 dollars on an album and I still have to wait ages to get it. Ugh. okay...vent over.
Not to be wish-washy, but after the third listen I'm really digging Prince too, haha.
Punkflop, sorry man--it really is an unfair scenario, I really feel for you. I hope that pilot friend you mentioned comes through for you on this one.

I'm currently listening to it. I'm at Rocket Skates. Holy fuck is Prince is amazing. So far my favorite track. It has the darkness of White Pony with some truly brutal moments. I really can't complain about this album
CD is the fuckin' best. The ending of Diamond Eyes kicked my ass.. has some serious punch.

Agreed. I'm on my fourth listen now, and this album is growing on me really quickly. I'm really starting to dig CMND/CTRL already, which was the song I least liked after my first listen or two. My first impression of Prince was blurry as well, but I'm really liking it already. I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but this album is making me super excited.

Risk has some balls on it. It's not brutal, but it has balls. Game over for me though, I'm in love with this album; in fact, so much so that my previous critiques almost seem silly even to me, and I only wrote them a couple hours ago. Right now, I'm excited about the prospects of Deftones season, and am counting the number of shows I can make until they're done touring. I'm already planning on four shows before October rolls around--the only thing better than getting the new album will be seeing them live for the first time in a years.

Awesome bro!! Glad ur enjoying it as much as I am. Im sure your glad u waited and thats all that counts. The songs will change around a lot for u and they have all of us. I first didn't really like CMND/CTRL also and now Im in love with it. The whole album is killer.

just 3 hours to go out and get my copy. I hope they have the album, since it is on their online store!!
I haven't even heard the iTunes version of the album. The 1st listen will be the physical, and then the iTunes version with the bonus tracks.
and of course, spinning the CD on my good old CD player :D
well........ it wasn't on my local cd store.. they say it will be on a week or so, so i've made the decision of hearing only the three bonus tracks at a certain time....
that means, still waiting!
Honestly if you've waited this long for the album, I wouldn't listen to the B-sides as if they're a part of the album. i. e. I wouldn't listen to the bsides at all until the full weight of the album has sunk in. But that's just my advice. Treating the bsides as if they should flow with the rest of the album would just throw off the vibe of the album in my opinion.
Well.... Wow. Worth the wait. From the first listen I was in love with it. For sure putting it in my top 3 albums from them. But then after a few (LOT) more drinks and so on I found myself loving it even more. Listened sober today and I LOVE it. Every track! Lol. At current moment it's at least tied for 1st place. Although that could change after time wears on. Stand out tracks (Royal, YSTB and SEXTAPE) Oh my god Sextape!!!!! That track is crazy awesome ;D Back to listening

so my thoughts:
It's a pretty good album, better (imo) than SNW, musically and produced. I mean, it sounds better, is not overproduced.
I have listened to it 3 times already, had a good time, some songs hit me at first listen (YSTB, Prince) and some others will (and are) grow on me (Beauty School, ie)
The second listen was the full album with the bonus tracks, and wow... the result was really good, btw.. i don't remember wehre, at the end of Risk or 976-Evil, it sounds like the intro of Diamond Eyes haha...
In conclusion, this album will be on the top, let's see if it beats S/T and ATF 8)
ohh and i almost forget... i always listen to the songs with the booklet in hand, with the lyrics, so, since i don 't have the lyrics for the bonus tracks i was reading the credits/thanks... and right in the middle of Ghosts i read the words from the band to Chi... it almost brought tears to my eyes... :'(

So have listened to the album for the first time:
And I don't think I've heard enough to make a general comment on the album.
However tracks that I immediately liked (and know that I will love even more on the second listen): Royal, Sex Tape, Risk, 976 Evil.
Royal is just a beast of a song...instant classic.
As Matt experienced - it'll take a few listens for me to 'get' this album. So far what I've gotten from it is that it's a completely new direction in the complete sound of an album...yet I can hear pieces of all their albums combined...
I have no doubt in my mind that this one is going to grow on me.
