Title: So, I might have missed this discussion already but...
Post by: No More Sugar on Apr 26, 2010, 09:36 PM
As most of you who know I exist know i don't post a whole lot... reason being but  I don't have alot of time to freelance on the internet anymore with my new job and college starting in a month or so...but what do you all think of diamond eyes? I have emotional connections to every deftones song for different reason...but i had a personal falling out with this cd honestly. When i first found it on utorrent, i burned it immediately for fear that it would be removed soon(which did happen obv) and of course for the first 2-3 weeks i made my friends sit through that album at least more than a hundred times. Then when my girlfriend (and this other girl who I introduced to the deftones 2 years ago and has since become a big fan) picked it up from me...subsequently during this 4 day span of being drunk/high 24 hours a day with quite a few people(including an ex on one of those days) my girlfriend seemed to have lost trust in me, and dumped me...but still opted to hang out with me frequently after it was done? I have nothing but hate for the songs on this cd lyrically with the exception of Command/CTRL. The music, vocals, and overall feel i love..but without the lyrical mortar to hold it together, i've "lost my taste" for this album and therefore refuse to listen to it for the most part. But hey that's just me.  Thumbs up/Down for you guys?

I do appreciate the album for what it's done for me though, It got me into the Circa Survive show for free a month ago. I showed it to a couple of local bands that played with them.

saturday night wrist came out at the absolute lowest point in my life and has nothing but bad memories attached to it. i still love the music but oddly enough i think it effects me personally the most out of all the records. i have a love hate relationship with that record.

so you mean you have bad memories attached to the record? that sucks man. if you just waited for the normal release, you wouldn't have that... so I guess that's bad karma.

oh and I love the record. I mean I really really love it. right up there with ATF and WP for me.

What is a deftones fan supposed to do when the first album in 4 years gets leaked? Besides, you obviously took that opportunity too, just like EVERYONE else who prowls this forum.

I love the music, but Prince and You've Seen the Butcher are the ONLY reasons I put that cd in my stereo. Prince is in my top 5 favorite deftones songs period. It's my opinion of them perfecting their sound from SNW.

I've never really had bad memories attached to a certain album or song. I guess I let the actual song alter my mood rather than keep certain memories to them, whether that's a purposeful thing or not. Anyways...sucks that you feel that way, it must be rather disappointing. Personally I disagree, I've been listening to it everyday since it leaked, more or less, and I dont like it any less. But that's just me.

Now if only you could attach those bad feelings to the drinking and smoking instead of the music--you'd be a much healthier person, lol.

Much respect,

It's still growing on me. I keep finding certain bits in songs that I concentrate on, and in turn that makes me like it more.

Fortunately had no bad personal times when listening to Deftones records. Probably why they rank high in my musical 'likes'.

Must admit though, when bad times affect a record it definitely scars the liking of it (except Radiohead, which seems to comfort)

Still can't get into 'This Place is Death'

Otherwise, it's my favorite besides Around the Fur.

It's lacking a deeper atmosphere in my opinion. It's in your face, which I kind of like, but this album definitely does not define Deftones for me. But it's all personal I guess. I still like it though. It does fit in the entire "we 'lost' Chi but we're still here to kick some ass" vibe.

Well,

I just can't figure out what in the holy fuck the creator of this thread is asking us.  First, he loves the album for 2-3 weeks and makes his 'friends sit through' it 'at least more than a hundred times'.  Then his girlfriend doesn't trust him anymore, and dumps him, because he spends four days drunk/high (most girls are less than impressed by this sort of behavior, fyi) and hangs out with an ex (gee, I wonder why she doesn't trust him).  Then he says he has 'nothing but hate for the lyrics'.  Did he have nothing but hate for them during that first 2-3 weeks?  Did his breakup change his mind?  Is this the 'personal falling out' that he describes?  Now he 'refuses to listen to' the album (all of this within a 2-3 week period, mind you).  Then he asks for a 'Thumbs up/Down'.  Thumbs up/Down to what?  The lyrics?  The album?  His breakup?

I for one am throwing a big Thumbs up to his girlfriend.  Sounds like she made the best decision of her life.

It's a good thing the Deftones write because they love to and not because they want to please their fans. Because I'm sure they'd be super proud all their hard work got you into a few places for free. Despite you downloading the album for free in the first place.

What a joke.

the album would be awesome if your gf hadn't dumped you. Thats what happens when you're drunk and stoned all week.

I love pretty much everything about this album, especially the lyrics.
Damn, to think that if i was as touchy as this would have meant me shelving white pony is just totally crazy.  I went thru a big break up, falling out with my best friend, and waking up from a failed suicide around that time, and sure it hurt to listen to the songs that provided the soundtrack to all that bad shit plus the good shit (like the sex and the all night up listening/talking/smoking and seeing the world in a new life-changing way).
My point here is that WP remains my fav record because it managed to get into my soul like that.  I mean how deep and special is that?  Some random sacto, ca dudes make music that totally defines what i felt at the time and i totally love the songs sounds and lyrics and feel, all without them knowing i even exist.   Sometimes it makes me sad to hear some of that album but why would it stop being good to me?  Just dont get ur reaction man.

Basically if i even breath a word of my ex's it puts me in the shit with my gf and i got 3 kids with her, so i think you'll find u fucked yourself in this situation.

Personally i think this may be another WP for me and guess wot,  i got a lot of bad shit happening again.  Worst is my bands Chi was our lead guitarist and a very special guy to me and he def aint coming bak like Chi def will.  We were on the verge of a deal 9 n a half yrs bak and WP was bigtime on the playlist bak then and even though it kills me everytime i hear bits that remind me of him, that disc will never stop spinning in my deck.  Life is more important than jerk reactions, music is more important than pain, love never dies in art, r.i.p. Dude, I was right there with you... the very night I popped it in the player, boom she lays that stuff down on me... and for the whole month, just kept giving me hope that she'd come back, I even biked to her friggin' house at 1 am for her in the pouring rain just to show her my love for her... and on the pod I had DE... so for me, that hole album is her... I love it. I dig it and I need it. she's still gone but the DE album is to me just a painting of that hole month pineing for her.

I can understand where you're coming from, guy, but not with this album.  I had lost touch with their music for a few years and then SNW came out at a time when I was going through some serious shit.  Deftones music really got me through some rough times.

Obviously i was asking about everyone's opinion on the album, and giving the story as to why i dislike it. If you didn't get that then i don't know what to tell you. As far as your comment about my girlfriend, well...that i don't appreciate but it must be coming from someone who's more perfect than I. Oh and fyi, that girl refuses to part ways with me...i wonder why...kinda awkward at times, but yet i'm glad it's not ALL over yet.Having to sit around and be "friends" with a girl you don't quite know how to be friends with is really hard.

I felt like I could relate to a lot of what this kid was saying - especially the parts about making my friends listen to it a million times and being drunk/high for a long periods of time. But, where I feel my story has the biggest contrast to the topic creator's story is that I do not have a girlfriend; instead, I had plenty of casual sex while listening to it, and subsequently, I feel obligated to say: I fucking love Diamond Eyes.

At first I didn't really dig Sextape, but then I came on a girl's tits while it played and I thought, "Yeah, this works."
