I konw there's already a thread on the new album but this is specifically a thread on who you would like to produce the new album. Tell us 3 of your choices by preference. I'm guessing that most people are going to have Terry Date and I'm hoping that a lot will also say Nick Raskulinecz, so there's a 3rd choice which should be a bit of a wildcard. Give us a reason why you chose who you did too.
Here goes:
1) Terry Date - He produced ATF and ST which are my 2 favourite albums. I love the sound he got on ST and would love to hear something dark like this again. He is in mind the sixth member of Deftones.
2) Nick Raskulinecz - He's not Terry but I'd still be very happy if he produced another of their albums. I think he did a great job on DE. I really like the sound of that record and I love the fact that he got the band working so well together and getting things done quickly. I think that if we don't want a long wait to the next album he's the man for the job.
3) Butch Vig - He produced Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream and Nirvana's Nevermind. Those albums were made quite a while back already but both had a great sound which left a lasting impression.
Whether you like those bands or not, it's difficult to deny the quality of the production.
Scott Litt is also a great producer IMO so I'm going to throw him in as a 4th choice.
Whoever it is, I want him to recapture the Ambience of SNW and DE
Nice, another SNW fan.
It's not my favourite album but I love it and agree it has such a beautiful ambience and sound to it (as does DE).
It's really nice to listen to driving late at night
I'm kind of doubting Deftones will go back to their 'roots' any time soon. They tried with Self Titled and I guess in retrospect they didn't like that album much even though it's my favorite. Anyway, I vote Terry Date or Butch Vig but yea I doubt it will happen.
I just hope Chino doesn't try to sound too pretty on the next album, and puts more of that raw emotion into it.
TERRY

S/T was a good effort but it have been worked on a lot better. Besides, Chino's mindset is all about expanding the band's sound but you'll always find Steph's songs so as long as he writes most of the stuff, the FYIHYD stuff will still be there
Terry Date for me, even if it means more time spent..... wish Terry had a say on Eros release but nope. I've wondered if there were hard feelings between them all about using other producers the last few released records but I remember reading or hearing somewhere that they still see him and have kicked it together. Terry fucking Date. By the way, I dont read into too much around here when I've been not around here for long periods of time so i missed knowing what other projects with other bands Terry has done. Fill me in??????? please and thank u all in advance :)
I don't think anyone knows yet (could be mistaken) on which label will play into these next and future releases but anyone ever thought about Rick Rubin????? Love everything he has ever done including his god given talent on finding unknown artists at the time and making them huge! He seems like a Deftones guy, I mean everyone from Beastie Boys to pop music to metal. He could get these guys motivated and all ears to what he has to offer from his name alone. And would being on a certain label determine that possibility if it were even a not-from-too-far fetched idea??? Stoned right now but sounds golden......Didn't he even discover Metallica?????? idk FUCK: Johnny Cash, Linkin Park, Weezer, RHCP, The Mars V, Slipknot, Slayer (just seen the old fucks), Run DMC, Danzig, The Cult, Rolling Stones, RATM!!!!!!, SOAD?????????? Some I love, some just successful and many of these never to sell out to radio mainstream like Beastie Boys or RATM!!! Hey u asked, just a thought i think Rick would do for them because they are proven beyond a lot of these artists already right? OPINION from a freak imagination, thank you. :D Don't follow much on labels or companies, just a listener who doesn't try to breake things down to too much of a science obviously but would Columbia Records even be a valuable option for a band like this? It is Rick Rubin's still I believe...idk
Terry Date
My top choice would be Brendan O'brien, he always makes makes performances and arragments unbeatable. he produced Issues, and that's the only Korn record i can listen to front to back.
if not, i'd love to see terry come back, the snare is unbeliable with him. but I also think Nick did an outstanding job on the last one. I love his spirit of "keep it focused & in the moment".
So as like a fantasy draft pick , experimentaly speaking : Phill Spector., . Just imagine "The Wall of Sound" under chino's vocals.................But in reality I say Terry Date, or RICK RUBIN would be sick,. but another dream pick is Nigel Goldrich, I want to hear deftones' KID A.
Terry Date is the man
Terry Date ftw

Beat me to it, however I do not think All of you suck, just a few of you....
Ross Robinson would definitely get the heavier side of the tones plus he's known for getting involved in the writing process at times too, seeing that Deftones have never worked with him officially (except on the 2 tape demo) I think its worth a shot

haha nice. you would do a better job than bob ezrin no matter how much you'd fuck up anyway :)
100% not nick, that flat, washed out poppy sound hes created has almost ruined deftones for me if it wasnt for the grit of ST holding it together
mark ronson, exchange the guitars with trumpets.
him or justin b
Deftones need to demo their material again like SNW
TERRY DATE.
There should be no other possible choices.

these
right now..Shaun Lopez
Matt Bayles, Robert Smith(he could also colab with vocals and guitar on a song), Toshi Kasai, P.Diddy, Steve Evetts, Omar Rodríguez-López, Dan the Automator( I remember some old interview during SNW era where Steph said they worked on some demos with him and he really enjoyed the fact that with Dan the band was sounding more technical.)
And I would definitely favour Terry Date over Shaun Lopez or Nick... I just have the feeling that if they work with Nick again it would be a Diamond Eyes part 2.
DeAndre Cortez Way would also be one great choice.
Kurt Ballou? lol

Oh yeah I forgot about that . I heard ross robinson's production on team sleep as well and i was impressed with "live from the stage"
I don't mind terry date but for the sake of experimenting and pushing limits, they should select someone else. I pick robinson
Oh shit I was confusing Butch Vig with Rick Ruben WOOOOWWWWW! I'll drink another.
I think Butch or Steve Albini would be a sweet idea. Even just an EP would be killer. I love their work with the 90's Alternative scene, and would probably prove to be an EPIC collaboration.
I also think Terry and that Nick dude (wtf is his last name? Raw-sex-I-likes) tag teaming would ideal. Terry is damn good at looking at the whole picture while this Nick good did wonders individually but failed at the overall project.
Thinking about it all... I think working with Ezrin again might be a good idea. This dude seriously pushed them as musicians and recorded probably one of their most complex albums ever.
End of the day... I pick Terry. With the exception of Self Titled... dude has a good track record. OH... I said it.
Steve Evetts!!!!!!!!!!
David Bottrill, Flood, Alan Moulder,
Rick Rubin!

As if Timberland producing a Chris Cornell album wasn't enough already.
If so...... I apologize. Not funny though :P

I bet you also didn't get the deandre cortez way, did you?
Cliff Richard! No sorry that's a bad joke.
I see some ppl said David Botrill - I don't know what to thin of this guy - sure he produced Tool's brilliant Ænima, Salival and Lateralus albums but I suspect those albums would have been great without him, although I'll never know.
What's put me really off this guy, is his production on the most recent Placebo album, Battle for The Sun - it's got some really bad, cheesy production in places. For e.g. there's Tetris like music in the middle of For What It's Worth, which is otherwise a very nicely written track and fake strings all over the album.
In truth I wouldn't want this guy anywhere near a Deftones album.
Rick Rubin and Brendan O'Brian were also mentioned. Brendan is a great producer, he'd be a good choice. Rick Rubin could be really interesting and could work really well - my only worry is that he may make the album too slick and commercial.
What do you guys think of Michael Beinhorn? Like Terry Date he's also worked with Soundgarden and like Terry Date did with S/T, he brought a wonderful dark, gritty sound to Superunknown, which 16 years later still sounds great!
I was also thinking Alain Johannes might be a good choice.
Or else, maybe if P.Daddy/Puff Diddy/Puffy/whatever his name is this week is too busy, the band can ask TImberland to produce.
Oh yes with regards to Terry, I know that when most people think of him they think of Deftones but their was actually a time before I listened to Deftones when I thought of Terry Date I thought of Soundgarden and White Zombie. Don't know if you know but he produced the brilliant 'Badmotorfinger' by Soundgarden and 'Astro Creep 2000' by White Zombie. I've known since way back that Terry was a genius!
brian eno?

Not if he makes them sound anything like U2!
Who else has Eno produced albums for?
Haha yeah I'm not a fan of u2 he has produced for massive attack and depeche mode though and has done a lot of film sound tracks.
Terry d would be awesome but i dont think that this is going to happen for now.
What about a deftones record produced by deftones-i mean chino produced will havens hierophant and thats a mfcool piece of music
I have the same nightmare that deft ones will repeat themselves if Nick is involved again.
Good mixing, good recording techniques and it's all there on DE. I just don't think it fits Deftones. White Pony was is their best sounding work.
It's so diverse acoustically speaking from song to song, but all the choices are perfect and the album still sounds as a whole piece..It's all very subtle.
DE is too clean for them, they're not a pop band. It's a shame though, the song ideas are real good and original (1 to 4 are all NOT 4/4 for example, but feel so organic). It's just to clean, crisp, not enough room..
I think Nick will produce it again for sure but I hope he doesn't mix it again this time as well. I don't know why but I have a problem with people who both produce AND mix the album. It's always good to get a fresh pair of ears imo. Chris Lord-Alge mixed the single version of the 'Diamond Eyes' song which I thought sounded better than Nick's mix. Maybe he could mix the next album... Or just fuck it all and get Terry back.

Agreed - I wish Chris had mixed the entire album.
To my ears the change of the mix from 'Diamond Eyes' to 'Royal' is very noticeable and it really shouldn't have been allowed to be like that.
I've heard Chino say in interviews that DE flows so nicely from one song into the next, but then straight off the bat, from song 1 into song 2, it doesn't flow well at all because of the huge contrast in the mixes.
Chris and his brother Tom are widely considered the best in the business - why they didn't just get Chris to mix the entire DE album I just don't know.
