Title: Foo Fighters
Post by: bewareofrats on Sep 05, 2012, 11:55 PM
There isn't a FF thread on here, for real?

Anyway,

This

Their best album by a landslide and one of the best albums ever made.

And thanks to the newly existence of this topic I just copied The Colour and the Shape, There Is Nothing Left to Lose and Wasting Light on my mp3 player.
Didn't listen to the older albums in a long time, while Wasting Light is in fact one of my favorite albums from 2011.

There is Nothing Left to Lose is a cool album.  Really different from any of their others I think.

Self Titled is still my favorite album to date by them. I recently rediscovered it (well, two years ago lol) and it hasn't left my iPod. Reminds me of middle school hahaha... It's just amazing.

With Wasting Light if felt like they were trying so hard to scream THIS IS A ROCK BAND. Felt that almost all the way through the album, still love it though.

Yeah I can see what you mean about Wasting Light.

It took me so long to warm up to that album.  Only now do I enjoy it quite a bit and consider it a solid rock album.  Nonetheless, it doesn't touch their old stuff (mainly TCATS).  Foo Fighters seem to be much more an arena/stadium rock band these days than they used to be and that's what bugged me about WL, with the pretty much unanimous praise.  People calling it their best and crazy stuff like that.  It is definitely overrated but I am happy that they had so much success with it.  The album is more generic rock than their old stuff.  Not generic like most of today's rock, just in comparison to what they used to be to me.  I haven't heard anything that sounds quite like TCATS for example.  Wasting Light could be compared to a lot I'm sure.

All I have from the Foo Fighters is TCATS and WL. Both are great albums, but I prefer TCATS.

From best to "worst" (maybe least best is a better description) for me:

The Colour and the Shape
Self-Titled
Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace
There Is Nothing Left to Lose
In Your Honor
Wasting Light
One By One

Livewire:

I like the cut of your jib.  The first cd of In Your Honor is probably the worst thing they've put out but the acoustic cd is pretty great.  I've never felt One by One much either, there was always something off about it.  It's really nice to see you're not all gung ho over Wasting Light.  It almost seems like many people don't remember or care how Foo Fighters used to sound when they were more original and creative and great.  Some people act like WL is the album FF were always supposed to make and I fear it will become the album they're known for which would be really sad.  TCATS is their masterpiece.  Simple as.  My ranking would probably be very similar to yours:

The Colour and the Shape
Foo Fighters
There Is Nothing Left to Lose
Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace
In Your Honor (because of the acoustic side)
Wasting Light
One by One

Yeah, I remember reading in an interview that Dave doesn't even like One By One except for four songs. My problem with Wasting Light is that it doesn't seem to have the same variety that their better albums have. They're good songs, but put together as an album they're all the same louder rock sound.

Totally agree.  It's all so loud with constant huge rock chorus and too much shouting.  It starts to sound too much the same.

Bingo.

Dave Grohl is an amazing musician and one of the coolest fuckin guys in the industry. Anyone who rates Foo Fighters anything lower than 10/10 need to get their ears checked.

I love TCATS, but lost interest completely after that. I still like them, but somehow their music just stopped being interesting.

Foo fighters are good and that. But it's like music made from a pop/rock recipe. They're the perfect gateway band from bieber to the dark/bright side.

I was just playing TCATS at my workstation and The song My Hero was playing. A customer came in and asked if it was Nickleback. WTF?!?!?

He then proceeded to claim that Nickleback and Foo Fighters sound the same. I wanted to face fuck him with my fist.

It's nice to finally see some people who share my lack of extreme enthuasiam for their latest.  It is still much better than Nickelcrap though.  Someone has the nerve to say that after hearing a TCATS-era song?  Wow, I can't blame you sing.  I could see it more with new FF (even though still definitely not), but absolutely not with old.

He deserves that for saying such bullshit.

The Foo Fighters can actually change their sound in some songs, unlike Nickelback, Hinder, Creed, etc.

And unlike Chad Krouger, Dave Grohl doesn't sound like a Kenny Chesney wannabe.

Edit: Scratch that. Dave Grohl isn't a Canadian Kenny Chesney sound-alike.

Yeah, Grohl sounds NOTHING like idiot stick Kroeger, thank goodness.  There is one dead giveaway it's not Nickelback and yes, their sound has plenty variation.

I may not like pickles, but they still have a better taste in my mouth than Nickelback in my ears.

There's a good reason the pickles got more Facebook fans.

I enjoy Something From Nothing quite a lot.  More interesting than anything on Wasting Light.  The three new songs so far are making me more interested in the new album than I thought I would be.  I hope the variation continues throughout the whole album.  Congregation has a bland-ness about it but it's pleasant at the same time.  The bridge is also cool.  Feast and the Famine is higher energy/more up-tempo and a potential grower, not great though.
