I've always found "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event" and "Riviere" sad sounding. :'(
Battle axe-fist-dai the flu-teenager-bloody cape*
Riviere, Anniversary Of An Uninteresting Event, Deathblow, Mascara and Pink Maggit.
no sad songs.. all sexy, all the time

'Fist', 'Teenager', 'Deathblow', 'Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event' and 'Riviere' all have a kind of sad/bummed vibe.
Mascara, Knife Party, Change, Fireal, Anniversary, Xerces, Lhabia (Well, the chorus, anyway), The Boy's Republic, Teenager, 976-Evil, Pink Maggit, Lovers, Lifter, Bored, Rickets, etc. Rosemary definitely has a sad sound to it.
There's a melancholy vibe to a lot of their songs.
Oh, and how could I forget Finger of Death? Possibly the saddest Deftones song ever.
Mascara
Yeah, a lot of their songs do. Just wondering what you guys thought though. Heh.
How could i forget teenager that song takes me back to when I was 16/17 and I could fuck up as many times I wanted wit no consequences.aww good times
Because of its tune and probably its placement at the very end of the album, I'd have to say This Place Is Death is somewhat sad sounding.
As for the others...Xerces, Deathblow, Pink Maggit, 976-Evil, and...that's about it for me.
Mascara
Teenager
Change
Hole In The Earth
Xerces (big-time sad)
Deathblow
Fireal
God's Hand
Xerces

Yea definitely Mascara especially when I found out what it was about, and Pink Maggit as well especially the start.

Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event and Mascara.
Not on topic, but for some reason, 'Feitciera' scares the living crap outta me when I consider its meaning. lol

I so wish I could've to "Change" or "Digital Bath". ;D
The outro to "Beauty School" is also kinda melancholy sounding.
Yep, Anniversary and Mascara come to mind right off the bat.
Actually with Deftones, either the songs make you melancholic/sad or they just simply make you want to kill yourself.
Maybe we should list the joyful songs, would be easier. ::)
This Place Is Death
Lovers.

Lovers.
Definitely. It has the same despair quality you can find in WGTB in my opinion, without the anger.
Anniversary, also, of course.
Overall the S/T is probably the most painful album to listen in that sense (Deathblow, Battle-Axe...)

<3 I used to bawl my eyes out at the very end of it. I've gone through a lot and Deftones were always the music of it all. Thank god for them and this board.
Xerces and Hole in the Earth for my own personal reasons.
Pink Maggot for me
Hands Down Xerces, nothing else close...IMO
Riviere is a good choice.
id say xerces....
I'll be waving.......Goodbye............
Yeah gotta be Xerces...
Mascara for me. It reminds me of my ex so much because she was just like Chino's ex wife; she didn't understand me and did accept what I was into, but there was something about her I couldn't refuse falling in love with.

awwwwwwwwwwwww!!!! :'(
i never really found any of them to be "sad"....maybe just sincere.
they are all sad at somepoint, i mean some riffs and basslines take me back to a time when i was sad or down , but then again another riff in the same same song would bring me back and make me feeltons better-id say Cherry Waves does this pretty well.. a good balance between mellownees and ferocity...
Battle-Axe is pretty heartbreaking.
Konami Code is kind of depressing.
mein brings tears to my eyes.

Agreed. The darkest track on SNW imo; Rivière on the other hand never really depressed me, I think it carries a positive hopeful vibe - "She haunts the road, she waits for a new face..." It's focused on the future rather than on the past.
sextape...... always gets too me
battle axe
I have to agree with Konami code.
how about all.
the better question is: what would be the saddest Deftones song...
Riviere i guess

if you purely look at it lyrically; i never look at lyrics much. music puts context... perhaps "she waits for a new face" is ment with a tragic undertone, a hopeless longing.

love the song but I find it a bit depressing don't really see the optimism probably I remember hearing somewhere it was about an old Mexican ghost fable about a ghost that would haunt this road and torment the travellers hence the "she haunts the road ,she waits for a new face", aka a new victim lyric.
All I know is Riviere owns everyones faces.
I'd say Mascara, the outro is especially sad sounding
WGTB
Mascara
Digital Bath
Fist
Battle-axe
Rivière
Xerces
Hexagram
Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event
Knife Prty
Pink Maggit ...
... almost everything in fact.

I see what you mean. But still, to me, it's probably the less sad ending to a Deftones record. I find Fist + Fireal, Mx and especially Pink Maggit and Moana more sad. Even This Place Is Death gets to me more.
Thats why overall with Hole In The Earth opening SNW and Rivière closing it, I wouldn't call it a sad album. It's more in-between.
My sadness stems from the personal experience I've attached to any of the songs, not the song itself.
Some people here are defining whether a specific song has a dreary or "sad" tone/feel to it, and while I may agree with them, I find that same song usually also has a "sexual" or "aggressive" tone to it, or even all of the above.
That's how good this fucking band is. You can basically attach any emotion to any song.

Lyrically yes. But the general tone is optimistic to me. Plus when he says "this is the end" it can mean that he (they, his friends that "lack taste sometimes") dealt with the situation and that it's over. Or it can also mean he's gonna show them the finger and go make another TS record, who knows. :P

Obviously, it didn't mean the latter. xD
to me none of the Deftones songs are sad. they can be melancholic, weird, sexy in their own way, but none of them do I consider being sad.
The Boy's Republic, Pink Maggit, Deathblow, and 976-Evil.

Surprising, but ok.
I think a lot of earlier deftones songs have a melancholic quality, but I think it's the mix of beauty and darkness which makes them powerful.
Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event is a great example of this. Not sad, but reflective.
