Title: Jonah Matranga's cover of Deftones' "Guest"
Post by: ruinfix on Oct 04, 2012, 07:33 AM
I'm commissioning Jonah (you know, the Unique Recordings thing he does) to cover Deftones' demo "Guest". This is how it went down.

Last month, Jonah played a show in Brisbane/Australia. My girlfriend and I were at the venue, waiting for it to open, when she saw Jonah in an internet cafe next door. We popped in to say hi, and I gave Jonah my band's demo, as well as the Deftones' demo song on a USB stick. I asked him if could possibly ask Chino (since they're buddies) for the lyrics because the ones online are most likely not 100% correct, and Jonah said: "I'm sure Chino wouldn't remember. He was probably high when he wrote that song. I'll just come up with my own words." He was funny and a sweet guy. He even tracked my girlfriend and I down at the gig to give us shirts.

Anyway, I am thinking of slowly getting Jonah to cover all of the 'Tones old demos (not all at once), and link them here on the forum. Maybe he will ask Chino for the lyrics, or maybe by him doing them, and them circulating online, the Deftones might get inspired to re-make them. That's my fantasy.

I shall keep you all updated.

This is so fucking awesome! Jonah is a very down to earth guy. I was just listening to Guest last night.. That song just puts me in a great mood, I love it. Roughly how long do you think it will take him to finish it? did he say he would keep in contact with you?

yes he is. he doesn't see chino that much though and I think it's a little awkward if he would have to ask chino for lyrics to those songs. Chino probably won't even know/remember them after all these years. Yet, the idea is very cool.

Yeah, we've been sending emails back and forth about it. He has quoted me, and I am in process of saving up for it. I'll share it on here once its recorded.

Here is my take on Chino's lyrics in this song... I know they are not all right. Give it a listen and see for yourself !

Guest

Ooo girl I try
But you cant say I didn't , sure
I wait at night, I smile and I try Ooohh
Try to believe her when she says "I'll never love again"
I wave my head in shame, In memories and more!

This love! I share, I share  here with you.
Broken ! (Warn her! Warn her!)? * Not sure about that part*

Dear stay (with me?), I'm born again.
I (maybe?)
Feelin' Stuck
Into my shadow pointing towards
I'll wave my head in shame, In memories I (borrowed?)

This Love! I share, I share here with you. Broken! Warn her warn her?
Stop sittin' and passing on everthing that i'd ever do, it's my world too.
I crave the temptress right in her
tell again.

This Love! I share, I share here with you.
Broken! warn her! warn her! Oooo
*some unaudible vocals around the 3:50 mark* (I do hear chino say, "I will be fine.See me sail high, in my head")
Stop sitting and passing on everything that i'd ever do, it's my world too!
My planes are intact right in with her WOOoOoOhooo
(I need some time to let her go!x2)
It's allllright! It's alllright!

Well, based on a quick google search of these lyrics I posted below show that I was off on alot of the lyrics. However, considering the quality of Chino's vocals they can be open for interpretation, and as far as the lyrics on the net, they may not be official( just fan interpretations). So I think Jonah has quite the options in regard to lyrical choice.

Oh, I try
They can't say I didn't try
I waited by a small child
Oh, Tried to leave her
When she says I'll never love again
I wave my head in shame
In memories
And more

This love, I share
I share it, with you
Drunken
Water, Water

Please stay
I wanna love again
Only
Feeling stuck
Into my shallow public choice
I wave my head in shame
In memories
What for?

This love, I share
I share it, with you
Drunken
Water, Water

Stop sittin' and passin' on everything that I'd ever do
It's not worth to, yeah

I paid the chance rest by you
Oh, tell again

This love, I share
I share it, with you
Drunken
Water, Water
Oh

Stop sittin and passin on everything that I'd ever do
It's not worth to

I made the chance right by you
Oh.. Oh Oh!!
So tired of lettin go
So tired of lettin go and check
So tired of lettin go
I'm so tired
It's so alright
Alright

Yeah, I've seen these lyrics slowly change throughout the years. But like you said, these are fans interpretations, and not transcribed from the demo's cassette sleeve or whatever. I'm sure Jonah will put his own spin on it. Hopefully, it will be recorded by the end of October (which is when I'll have some free cash).

One of my favorite songs from that era. The only song (except the DE and KNY stuff) that sounds uplifting to me BUT still in a bitter Deftones way.

Hey Deftones/Far/Jonah fans....I am Lauren Guest...get it?  GUEST.  Chino wrote the song while Chi and I were breaking up.  I was an addict and Chi thought he was in love with me.  He was living in campus commons near CSUS while I was living in Sutter Hall.  He used to deliver pizzas and flowers to my door, and I quickly fell for this aspiring musician, poet, and total romantic.  We became engaged when I was only 19, and I was diving deep into a habit of drug abuse and partying, travelling with the newly popular Deftones from Sac to Oakland.  Chino was dating my best friend, Michelle Larson, (RIP) and we were all having the time of our lives.  When my addiction started to take over, (Chi was never involved) I started to pull away, in spite of the engagement ring on my finger, (that belonged to his mama, Jeanne)
Chino wrote the song "Guest" to exemplefy my asshole nature and Chi's unquestioning trust in me.  Mind you, he left his live-in lover to date me.  I can't remember her name, but she was a very pretty girl...

The lyrics I recall are spotty,,  the best I remember are the words that busted my heart open and made me feel like the ultimate betrayer:

"Don't try to make love from gold,"
"DOn't try to make love from gold,"
"Dont' try to make love from gold...."

I have more if you want them.  Just thought you should know the back story.  After Chi and I broke up, he went on to marry Adrienne, some hippy-chick from Mendocino/Eureka area.  She wore a "Have a Nice Day" smiley around her neck.  You know, the emblem from the 70's.  Big and yellow.

No contact with Chi for years.  He and Chino and Stephen disowned me when I broke up with Chi.  I am subscribed to oneloveforchi--but I doubt I'd be the one he would want to see when he comes out of twilight.  I am now 39 years old.  Guest was on a demo nearly 20 years ago.  P

Oh, I tried...
You can't say I didn't try....
Oh I waited up last night,

Ohhh, Try to believe her...
when she says I'll never love again

I hang my head in shame, and mourn....

Maybe--there was a lot of anger there. I got clean, but have not yet made amends with Chi--he harbored anger.  Not sure he would want to see me and I don't want to bring up bad places for him.  Although I have apologized to Jeanne and his family.  If I thought it would do him good, i would go see him, but I feel as though I would be selfish for doing so.  Maybe, one day....

Lauren, thank you so much for sharing this story with us and history of the song.. A lot of us old school fans here really love this song. I really appreciate you clarifying some of the lyrics( if you could clarify more that would be so nice), because I've listened to this song so many time to try to figure them all out, because I myself would like to cover this song one day! I feel for you as you were going through some bad times with addiction and your relationship with Chi at that point in your life, but this song just hits a chord for me and I feel a personal connection with it in my own life, my love for this song is also coupled with how Deftones sound have evolved so much...  Ansd even if this song is over 20 years old I still think its great, although the guys will never play old songs like this anymore... Again, I really cherish your response.

I wish I still had the demos-- I had "Like Linus" Hoagburg Hop, and everything else.  Dave was their manager at the time--don't remember his last name but he "wore short shorts."  The Deftones made sure to make homage to him on their performances--"Dave wears short shorts!"  Cattle Club, Battle of the Bands, and so many clubs from Sac to the bay.  I had the time of my life, and was hiding a drug addiction.  Chi introduced me to poetry--and after rehab, I went on to a few published pieces.  Nothing major, but I owe it to him.  My best memory of Chi was sitting at his parent's house in Stocton, (which we were both sure was haunted,) by the pool, and collaborating on poetry.  He was so much deeper than I was at my young 19 years, but he loved me and thought I was great.  I attribute my self actualization in those early pre-adult years to him.  Even today, after all the mistakes we both made, he was an amazing and propelling force in my life.  If I find those demos, although I think they were stolen at one point, I will post them.  xoxo..ONELOVEFORCHI!!

Chino like Chi is a great lyricist and poet.

Yeah, my name is John and I Facebook'd Lauren the song a couple of nights ago. Glad she got to emotionally vent and give us the lyrics.

snw9, I was going to get him to cover the song sooner, but due to my current financial restraints I had postpone it. :(

I will do it as soon as possible. But if someone commissions him before me, then no problem.

How much does Jonah charge to do this?  I don't think he would charge a thing.  I was friends with the bassist from FAR--Malcom, and although Jonah was more reclusive I would not expect him to take the lyrics and charge John Green or anyone.  If that were to happen, I would definitely have something to say about it.  Jonah would not do that.  He is a proponent for Sac Music and would only use these lyrics to benefit the history of our local music scene.

No doubt! I'm sure he charges the client by the hour of how long it takes to record, mix, edit, and master the songs.. I dunno if he does it by himself or has a few friends help as well...

EDIT;

Also, thanks for expanding further on your interpretation on the lyrics, Lauren.. Sure they're more accurate than mine...
