What is your favorite era ?
I'm not only speaking about the album itself.
Of course it's important, but I'm speaking about something bigger : atmosphere / universe around the band.
Including : album, tourdates, music videos, interviews, photoshoot...
For example, your favorite album might be KNY but your favorite era in general could be White Pony era.
I thought it would be interesting to talk about it, without thinking only about our favourite album.
Definitely the time around the selftitled album. I remember being really blown away by their darkness (soundwise) and compared to WP, they had an intense level of melancholy in their tunes that I would never have expected. And I remember some really sick live shows over here in europe during that period. Pity though that Chino was really fucked up back then, on the other hand, it sorta suited the taste of the record and artwork, the whole darker imagery.
I voted DE, just such an exciting, positive period.
Illhave to go with the ST era, for a few reasons.. First, as previously mentioned, I was really in love with the dark and melancholy of the album itself as it seemed to fit in perfectly with my views on life at the time. More than just the album was Lovers, and the B-Sides record as well. This was also the time when I first saw them in concert, as I was too young and poor to see them during WP.

Yes! And I was aware of them when it happened. Otherwise I would've said the WP era, but I didn't actually
live it, I mean, I was 11.
Self titled for me as well......but DE and KNY might be changing that

I forgot to mention, it is
not an obligation to have lived the era for picking it.
the best era for watching em live was probably the ATF era. great shows there.
i got to see them in 2001, when everything was climactic, in crazy epic historic show. they showed top form, so i had to go with 2000-2002. maybe im biased though.
White Pony for me; the shows were chaotic and the band was so full of energy, the vibe they created during that time with the middle finger they gave to everyone who expected a nu-metal album got them so much attention. Even people who didnt like them because they were pegged as nu-metal prior to WP stood up and took notice of them after hearing the album. And as i said on here before that album was just the soundtrack to my life 2000-2001 as i graduated high school in 2001 and started partying around fall of 2000 and that album went everywhere with me. So many good memories of bong hits, shots of tequila and whiskey, and coors light as "change" and "digital bath" played in the background. I was a reckless little fucker similar to how they were as documented in the Entertain Me piece.

pretty much the same for me, minus the alcohol.
White Pony for me it's my favourite album already but some of their best live performances happened in that era and there is also lots of good interviews to.
ATF era. I started listening to them with Adrenaline, but ATF is the album that really got me into them. I specifically remember driving 30 miles (living in the middle of nowhere is a bitch sometimes) to pick it up after school and jamming it the whole way home. That was also back when MTV played music videos on rare occasion and it was pretty awesome seeing My Own Summer on there. Also remember when they started playing Korea before WP came out and I was soooo hyped up for that album.
ATF for sure! have you seen their ATF performances ? they went nuts, and chinos voice was at his best. such a show. i would vote WP but chino fucked his voice during that era.
S/T. I have a lot of nostalgia for that era, and it also has some of my favorite live performances ever.
i love every era (even the snw times that for me is the worst), but the misticism and the youth of the ATF era, makes me feel so alive, oh yeah.
Not sure if White pony or koi no yokan era...
I liked the whole era from S/T to Eros.
I'm the only one to vote SNW? You guys are lame.
Koi No Yokan. Besides the end of the Diamond Eyes era, it's the only era I've witnessed.

Lame album lame guy!
It was really hard for me to choose between "white pony era" and "ST era".
But I have to pick "white pony era" for all the high/sensual/crazy/strange atmosphere around the band, their own experiences and all the ambiant/magical shows.
I love the photoshoots, interview... almost everything in that era.
Also, the album is magical.
"ST era" is pretty much insane too but in another way. Deep, dark, heavy, violent, agressives shows, old school Chino with the socks.
I chose DE. I wasnt a fan until around 2009, so I cant pick any of the previous ones, though I know if I was a fan sooner, WP or ST woulda been my favorite era because the music woulda fitted my mood perfectly back then. I chose DE because this era isnt done yet obviously, so cant compare, but DE was the first album they released since I became a fan, they all seemed to be doing well, happy, Chino getting healthier, great shows, etc.

Did yah ever follow up on listening to Katatonia like i suggested? :)
You can't really choose early years or the Eros sessions because it was pretty much undocumented, apart from a few snippets and bad quality recordings. Either way ATF right through to SNW.
there is no post 2001 show [excepting espacio broadway 2012 (santiago) - malvinas 2011 (buenos aires)], that can be compared to the 2000-2001 era. you can't compete with climax.

wut?
Awesome album, but bad era. The band almost broke up because of it! Although I consider it their single greatest achievement I wouldn't consider that a good era for Deftones =P
Just between ST and SNW...but i voted SNW :)
ST era. Period.
WP
It's such a tough choice between ATF, WP and Deftones. I chose White Pony though.
Until now :
1 = ST era
2 = WP era
3 = ATF era
4 = DE era
5 = SNW era
6 = KNY era
7 = Early years era, Adrenaline era & Eros era
DE for me, not only because of a great album, but because I saw them twice in a row, both the best 'tones shows I've been to (one in my home town even, felt really strange). Chi was missed, but the band seemed to be on top and there was just so much energy and buzz around them. every live show sounded awesome, they looked healthy and clean. and in my personal life exciting and fun stuff was happening.
White Pony era.
Didn't saw them live on that era but when i listen to white pony it always brings me good memories of my childhood. I received the CD as a birthday present back in 2000, i turned 11 years old when i got the CD.
For me ATF era... Special times, seeing them live a lot of times in 1997 and 1998. Met them for the first time when they were still 'small'. Shows full of fire and passion. First record I got when it was released in Oct 1997. ATF!
Favourite album is easily S/T and because I got into the band with WP post release, S/T was the first of their releases I anticipated and the first album that I essentially went through the motions with, from first hearing it and it having that unfamiliar feeling, to how I feel today. I think it was their musical highpoint in terms of engendering their songs with a great emotional wealth having established a highly cerebral, sensual atmosphere on albums prior to it.
However I have to vote for the ATF era as it's when their musical identity truly arose. Adrenaline came first, sure, but where that album is the 'newborn', I think the highly energetic vibe of the ATF era is when they 'started to talk' and 'run around', and they became an identity. Didn't experience it myself but I can see the passion in the shows and the focus in the writing and recording that went into ATF. Adrenaline is like an unearthed diamond and with ATF the diamond has been cut.
I voted S/T. Thats just when i really got into the band.
Chino with Dreadlocks era.
I'd have to say ATF. The whole band was so youthful and full of energy, and Chino's voice was still in peak condition.
big shocker what wins on this S/T cult board(sharingbrains). knew for 100% fact it would win
i'd rank the eras like this
WP (huge buzz around the band then, change gettin good mtv & radio play (buzzworthy video), TRL, the orriginal message board was swamped with people, it went platinum, won them a grammy, from when WP came out they sold over 1 million albums in 9 months for all 3 albums combined(dwarfs anything they've done sales wise since), the EP, & the videos were all cool (well bts was kinda goofy), glassjaw tour, incubus opening for them on bts tour. there were some down points, like Chino blowin out his voice, things that had to do with that, & adding BTS to WP which they regret. but the pros outweigh the cons. they were on fire, & actually got some decent attention for once (not near as much as they deserved, but far more than they've ever gotten before or since)
ATF - top of their game, 2 great videos, not 1 bad live show, carving out some serious buzz that led to WP being so anticipated. 97-98 were also the best years of my life, so that helps. this era was great
adrenaline - i got into the band in late 95, & didn't get the internet until early 2000, so i couldn't keep track of a whole lot of what they did (in the ATF era i started to keep up by readin circus, etc) but i had the 7 words video on tape probably nov 95, & ordred the album then in 95, & just loved their sound(unlike anyone i'd ever heard), i was 16 & pretty proud i found a lesser known band that was so good. i really helped spread the love for deftones around this city like a wildfire. anyway, they were badass in the adrenaline era, not 1 bad show, raw as hell, heavy as all hell. adrenaline is way underrated here, almost criminally
diamond eyes - the comeback. best album since WP (at the time at least, not sure if KNY is better, only listened to KNY 4 times so far, cause i'm trying to keep it fresh for a while, it's tough laying off) anyway, return to from after the 2 worst album in a row s/t & snw(yet still fine albums), Chino was skinny again (nobody thought that would happen, it got noticable & kinda uncool when s/t came out, & was really bad for snw, probably effected sales for both, especially snw). they made 5 really good videos, the ep, live shows were sounding better, they actually appreciatd the awesome job they have again. great era
like linus - i love the songs from this era (some of their best tunes for sure) the 1992 live show, & the few clips of then. they rocked, & it's the start of what got them signed. love the vibe i get from all of it, wish i'd had known about them then, but it was next to impossible living in ohio, & being so young, no internet, etc
KNY. the era has just started, but it's great so far. love the album. just need some videos, & pro shot live stuff to truly rank it, but i know it's ahead of s/t & snw for me. some great videos like from the DE era, & a dvd would do wonders for this era. the elusive dvd will NEVER HAPPEN EVER though
s/t - a cool era in it's own way, just a different kinda cool. it was negative mostly. starting with Chino getting grilled by the music world for doggin out metallica & korn. he was pretty bitter that whole year (i don't blame him. i think he has some anger about how many shit bands have outsold them, & how korn & LB blew up way overboard compaired to them. like mustaine has for metallica etc. i think he still has this anger & frustration even today, but he showed it more in interviews then, & i think now he appreciates that they are at least big enough to make a living of what they do. then he was pissed about what they weren't gettin, not greatfull about what they did) that cover on the magazine was horrible too, he looked awful. minerva got solid mtv play & radio play. the live shows were hit or miss, usually good. bloody cape video was coo. hex video was ehh, ok. cool era, but the album wasn't on the level of the first 3 imo. it was the first album i saw the message board really take serious heat. i think Chino had a bit of writers block writing the lyrics & melodies (& it's his most off key album, he sounds the worst on it, but it;s still awesome, it's Chino effin Moreno we're talkin about here) his scream was still top notch then at least. overall, it wasn't good times in deftones land then. dark times. they didn't seem to be having much fun, just going through the motions with the album, & live. & for how dark people here said the album is, it has their most uplifting song probably in minerva, & for how heavy everyone here says it is, it had 4 heavy songs out of 11. it was pretty mellow mostly. the album did go Gold, that may never happen again with they way album sales are these days. tough enough era in the first place, but with how badly it's overrated here, it makes it even worse (omg 2003 is the best year ever for deftones, only 2003 matters. bizzar'o world here), & they left off what i think it hands down the best song of that era, lovers. i think alot of the fanbase left after this album & this era. it did some serious damage imo (snw's era continued the downward spiral but worse)
SNW. - can't decide if this is my least fav deftones album, or s/t. probably s/t. snw by a sliver because of riviere (but i pretty much adore both). this era was a mess, the videos absolutely sucked. Chino just looked so bad in those that it didn't work, & bad ideas for the videos anyway. i like all their other videos. i did get to hang out with them in sept 06 so that'll always make the era cool for me. good album, but overall their worst era
The second part of the S/T era (July 2003 - December 2003). Everything was awesome. Everything. The setlists, the vocals (not all of them and not everyday, but you know...), the mood, the setup of their live shows, the music. Their aura onstage was beyond marvellous.
I"m surprised people dig the S/T era so much. The 'tones lost some fans -and respect with the whole Metallica/Korn incident- the videos were ok but not exceptionnal, the interviews were awful -Chino and the others being depressed or apathic- ... I mean, don"t get me wrong, I love that era, i'm really nostalgic about it since it was the first cd I actually anticipated and bought, was very excited about the booklet, the enhanced content on the cd -yeah, with Youtube you don"t get that anymore- some of the shows were epic -the release show, paris in september 2003...- and let's not forget it is still today, to me, the best stuff they released after WP.
Anyway, I would have thought WP and ATF would have gotten more success.
By the way, it's fun to rank eras. Next we should rank Chino's shirts. JK

Compare eras (album, live performances, interviews, photoshoot, artworks, universe, atmosphere) is very similar than to compare Chino's shirts... Yes, I know it's a joke but come on guys.
For the rest of your post, I think "people" didn't like the
ST because it's too dark, heavy and violent, but the "fans" really liked it because it's everything about
Deftones's sound.
I mean, after
WP, everybody was waiting for
WP2 and they did something really far away with lots of rage.
People, radio, tv... they all want to hear
Change,
Entombed,
Sextape but real fans wants all the beautiful melodic part of the band, but also
WGTB,
Hexagram,
Bloody Cape,
Needles And Pins...
It's a fine line between the ATF and S/T era but I think the ATF era wins for me. Special time and energy in the band.
1994–1996 for me. Such intense and crazy shows, so much energy, etc.
Can't believe I'm the only one who voted for this era !!!!
