Title: Deftones Discography Elimination (round 2)
Post by: krook on May 07, 2016, 02:34 AM
Adrenaline went away in round 1.
Like last time, I'm voting for KNY.

KNY, for sure. Once it's gone, it's DE for me.

Here's how Gore and SNW match up against Koi, IMO...

Prayers/Triangles > Swerve City
Acid Hologram > Romantic Dreams
Doomed User < Leathers
Geometric Headdress = Poltergeist
Hearts/Wires > Entombed
Pittura Infamante > Graphic Nature (Pittura's less repetitive)
Xenon < Tempest (I personally prefer Xenon, but it's probably not the popular consensus)
(L)MIRL > Gauze (Close, but (L)MIRL has more diverse songwriting)
Gore < Rosemary
Phantom Bride < Goon Squad
Rubicon > What Happened to You?

6-4 Gore. Closer than I thought, but Gore still wins.

(For SNW vs Koi, I'm going to leave Komani Code off so they match up)

Hole in the Earth > Swerve City
Rapture > Romantic Dreams
Beware < Leathers (Live version of Beware might win, but this isn't the live version)
Cherry Waves > Poltergeist
Mein < Entombed (I seriously might prefer Mein, but I know that isn't the popular opinion...lol)
Xerces > Graphic Nature
Rats!Rats!Rats! < Tempest (Again, not a fan of Tempest, but I'll throw you Koi fans a freakin' bone)
Pink Cellphone < Gauze
Combat > Rosemary
Kimdracula > Goon Squad
Riviere > What Happened to You?

HA! 7-4 SNW. Solid songwriting beats solid production any day of the week.

Oh, and because I have to...

Hexagram > Swerve City
Needles & Pins > Romantic Dreams
Minerva = Leathers
Good Morning Beautiful < Poltergeist (I'll give KNY a pass on this one)
Deathblow > Entombed
When Girls Telephone Boys > Graphic Nature
Battle-Axe > Tempest
Lucky You > Gauze
Bloody Cape > Rosemary
Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event > Goon Squad
Moana > What Happened to You?

9-1 S/T.

HA! 7-3 SNW. Solid songwriting beats solid production any day of the week.

Combat vs Rosemary? Those are my 2 favourite songs and both creatively are strong though I'd pick Combat.

This round I've eliminated KNY, once again, its a nice record however I do not listen do all the songs frequently and as a collection of tracks, it doesn't represent their best work.

Wow, yet again this board is completely at odds with me.

Best albums: Adrenaline, WP, KNY
Middle albums: ATF, SNW, DE
Worst albums: S/T, Gore

Prayers/Triangles = Swerve City
Acid Hologram > Romantic Dreams
Doomed User = Leathers
Geometric Headdress < Poltergeist
Hearts/Wires < Entombed
Pittura Infamante < Graphic Nature
Xenon < Tempest
(L)MIRL < Gauze (Both songs are kinda meh)
Gore < Rosemary
Phantom Bride < Goon Squad (Both songs are kinda meh)
Rubicon < What Happened to You?

1-8 KNY.

(For SNW vs Koi, I'm going to leave Komani Code off so they match up)

Hole in the Earth = Swerve City
Rapture > Romantic Dreams
Beware = Leathers
Cherry Waves < Poltergeist
Mein < Entombed
Xerces < Graphic Nature
Rats!Rats!Rats! = Tempest
Pink Cellphone > Gauze
Combat > Rosemary
Kimdracula > Goon Squad
Riviere < What Happened to You?

4-4. Much prefer KNY to SNW though. KNY's highs are much higher and it's a better album to listen to start to finish due to cohesion.

Hexagram < Swerve City
Needles & Pins > Romantic Dreams
Minerva = Leathers
Good Morning Beautiful < Poltergeist
Deathblow < Entombed
When Girls Telephone Boys > Graphic Nature
Battle-Axe < Tempest
Lucky You > Gauze
Bloody Cape < Rosemary
Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event > Goon Squad
Moana < What Happened to You?

4-6 KNY. Looks closer in this case than it is in reality. FAR prefer KNY to S/T.

Like I've said a million times, this board is the only place I've ever seen where S/T and Gore get the lauds they do. Among all of my friends it's pretty much universally agreed upon that they're  weak albums and that KNY is the best thing they've done since WP.

And your anecdotal evidence means nothing. Everyone I know personally loves S/T and thinks KNY is boring. It's just boring dude, nothing special. It's basically just DE 2.0, the least amount of transition between any two Deftones albums.

You're out of your mind if you think KNY is DE 2.0. The technical quality of musicianship and cohesion on KNY was a huge step up from anything they had done to that point. The only songs from DE that sound technically like they could've been on KNY was the more ambitious stuff like Royal and Beauty School.
