The title track is fine but I'm not sure if it should have been the lead single. I think Genesis worked better to that effect and maybe another track would have been a better choice.
Obviously it's been 25 years since the release of Adrenaline, they're not exactly young men anymore, so I tend to keep my expectations in check when I know that a band like Deftones is going to release a new album. But oh man was I pleasantly surprised.
Genesis is a solid opener, Ceremony is just a neat song, Urantia and Error have to be among my favorites off this record. Speaking of, check the visualizers on Youtube if you haven't, they look really cool imo.
The Spell of Mathematics isn't going to charm the fans who miss the early albums whatsoever, but personally, I think it's a very nice song might be your speed if you like Koi no Yokan.
Pompeji might be the odd one out on this record, it's quite mellow, not necessarily bad (think Teenager back on WP), but it has a really cool instrumental outro which fades into the next track, This Link Is Dead. Speaking of...
Holy shit, I never dared to expect such a heavy track from Deftones again. Chino is what, like 50, and yet this song almost sounds like it fits right into S/t. If you haven't heard it yet you're in for a surprise.
Radiant City took me a few listens but I'm opening up to it, the bass on it actually sounds pretty sick. Sergio Vega is definitely at his best on this album and I'm excited about what he will do on the future records.
Headless is another solid track with a very eerie instrumental intro, and then finally we got the title track Ohms, which I'm actually starting to like more now that it's in the context of being the album closer. It closes on a rather triumphant/positive note, and to be honest, after spending all this time suffering from the anxiety from covid 19 and the lockdowns, it's a welcome touch...
Oh and last but not least, the mixing on this album is flawless, which comes as no surprise considering the band is working with Terry Date again. I really hope they can just stick with him from now on.
What did you guys think of this record? Nothing's ever going to dehtrone White Pony for me, but I think Ohms is very solid and might stick as one of my favorites. Time will tell I guess.
Spell is my favorite song and I think the first four albums are nearly flawless.
i really love ohms but that means trying not to burn myself out on it every 5 seconds lol...love the mixing, love the intensity, and definitely love the lyricism ;D
I've only listened to it front to back about 4 times 8) so 2 new albums for me.
