"Phil Anselmo of Pantera/Superjoint Ritual, etc. fame was one of the guest vocalists for Alice In Chains' recently taped performance for VH1's upcoming tribute to Heart. Anselmo performed the tracks "Them Bones" and "Would?" with the group, which was rounded out by Duff McKagan of Velvet Revolver/Guns N' Roses fame. Comes With The Fall frontman William DuVall handled the vocals for "Man In The Box" and "Angry Chair", while Alice In Chains also performed "Rooster" with Heart. The tribute show is expected to air in May."
This is along with a number of european dates in the summer, including a dublin date with metallica and korn which i will be attending!
No shit.
I'm in two minds as to wether that's a cool thing or not. While I love both Alice and Pantera's work sometimes I think it's better to let things go and respect the music as it was with Layne fronting.
Strange that Phil stepped up too, I could hardly see him replacing Dimebag.
Phil is'nt touring with them, this was just a one off! William duval is touring with them and apparently after the tour they'll retire the name and start making music together under a new name, its just one last chance to hear Alice!
I agree it's not the same without Layne but on the other hand jerry wrote 95% of the music so i guess its his decision!
it's not Alice in Chains without Layne, simple as that. Jerry might have been the brain, but Layne was the heart and soul of AiC. I would respect him a lot more if he had used another name or simply used Jerry Cantrell for this tour.
I heard rumours that they're coming to Roskilde though, and I will most likely go. if they actually play I will definitely see them. this band has meant more to me than any other band ever and if this is my only chance to experience those songs live, then I'll take it.

My thoughts exactly.
It's like when the Doors reformed with Ian Astbury on vocals. Some things are best left although I'd also have to check them out as I never got the chance to see them live either.
Well this appearance is being aired in the states so hoprfully we'll see a video or somethin of it!
its kills me because I can't remember where I saw it, but 2 or 3 days ago I saw on a board somewhere (who knows it could've been this one) that someone had 3 of the songs with Phil and AIC in mp3. He listed them too....but didn't offer them up for download.......
This is just a farewell tour for Alice in Chains. after this tour is over, they're going to start a new band with a new name.
Cut cantrell some slack, shit.
I'll be seeing them at Download, can't wait!
Today would have been Layne's 39th bday
RIP
RIP God
RIP
He left too early..
Taken from us too damn soon
theres a lot of love in those people for the respective people that passed, Layne and the whole band was seen partying with Dime and Pantera on the 1st home vid, they had good times together, i think its cool
RIP Layne Staley

yeah, they're really good. some songs sound waay different than what they ended up playing.
OK. I can't see anyone dispute my love of Alice In Chains.
I saw them on the Dirt tour (93) and Layne was a mess! Still he didn't miss a note and no body could mess with his performance. He is one of those magnetic people that you could get angry at! layne commanded you to listen to him. Not just with his instrument, but his personality.
On the flipside, you have 3 highly talented musicians that have passed on huge offers so that they could hold out for their friend to get better (Mike Inez turned down Metallica 5 times), Sean Kinny turned down Ozzy Ozbourne and Jerry has turned down LOTS of offers, as well as their now infamous turning down of MTVs Rockstar (man, I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when they told MTV where to go!!!)
They have waited for Layne to get 'better' for almost 10 years, they could of very easily kicked layne out and got another vocalist and kept going purly for the $$, but they have always said AIC isn't around without Layne.
And they have never once said that AIC has re-formed, after this tour, there will be a new band name and a new sound.
I think its worng for anyone to point any fingers at them for disrepecting Layne...I think they have showed his the most utmost respect! Just watching MTV Unplugged, watch Jerry's face...its sadness for his friend!
Take it from me, its the hardest thing in the world watching your best friend slowly kill himself.
And for the record, AIC and Pantera are very old friends...they where both glam bands before 1990.
I'm going with my brother to see them in October.
I am hitting the Atlanta show Oct 10

In the new Metal Hammer, Alice In Chains are featured in the Metal Detector, where basically the rate that bands releases in an order from best to worst. Here's how they rated them
Must Have: Dirt (of course)
Silver Medal: Jar Of Flies
Recommended: Facelift
Wild Card: Sap
Fans Only: Alice In Chains
Avoid: Unplugged
Sometimes the ones in fans only and avoid are only there because they're not as good as the ones above, although I am surprised they rate AIC so low. So what do you guys think of this then?
Tripod as "fans only?"
Bullshit.
Bullshit about the unplugged too, that shit is pretty damn good.
Saw them earlier this year... them, A7X and Deftones were my favs at Download this year.
I think they just drew names out of a hat while they were doing shots.
I just finised watching unplugged and it makes me sad and realise how much i miss this band and how important they were, great songs, great melodies, great funny personalities!! RIP Layne!!
you speak the truth. whenever I watch unplugged nowadays I get tears in my eyes.

Good point and well said.
yeah, I was lucky enough to catch them live in the summer and it was amazing. better than I had expected.
i think if i had to choose only three bands to listen to for the rest of my life it would be Alice, Tones and Radiohead....
RIP Layne
I wanted to go see them when they were in ireland but they were opening for korn and metallica and the way overpriced tickets sold out in no time!
Alice in Chains rocks. Favorite song would have to be Junkhead and Nutshell. Excellent songs.
R.I.P. Layne and Dimebag
I saw them tonight. Holy shit, it was good.
The acoustic set in between the electric sets was awesome. I think the new singer guy is pretty damn good. I felt that layne was there in spirit.
I love AIC. Angry Chair is my fav. song i think.
I never really got into them, but they were always one of those bands that when I heard their music I cranked it up nice and loud and sang along. They just do that to you.
watched the dvd at a party last week. I'm so glad most of my friends like them. they're awesome to sit and sing along to when you're drunk.
'Can I be as my Goddam...'
Jerry Cantrell = Guitar God.
Metallica called them the 'American Black Sabbath'.
You will not get better vocal harmonies in a rock band than Cantrell/Staley.
'AIC' is grossly underated, it was the first AIC I got though so maybe there's an element of sentimentality there...
Don't know what to think about the new vocalist, I guess I should reserve judgement until I've seen/heard them. Just hope they don't turn Karoake in Chains.
Anyone else ever think that AIC/Soundgarden should have been where Nirvana/Pearl Jam were? I know that these were by no means small-time bands, but I just honestly get more out of them than the other two grunge behemoths.
I think they never really got as big as nirvana and pearl jam because both aic and sg, didnt tour as much as the other 2, sg hated touring and you call tell by there live shows, and aic after the dirt tour never really toured again, plus there songs maybe werent as radio friendly as some of nirvana's and pearl jams!!
Its the same with screaming trees, they never got the praise which they deserved!!
but this just makes me like these bands even more!!

THey keep on working on the album. But no word about the band not being called Alice in chains...weird.
Yeah, bro I was the same about the name change. Im sorta middle of the road on my thoughts.
But you can't deny a classic band.
Nutshell is still the most depressing sone released
New song! http://rapidshare.com/files/250212333/AIC_-_ALIV.rar
Kickass.
the new song is really really really good. The new singer is good, but you can tell Jerry Cantrell has no problem doing what he did in every other AIC album with vocals too.
fuck, today is the happiest day of my life.
Just got Faith No More Download reunion set and now this.
I like the new song, it's great. but it's not AIC to me and it will never be. it sounds more like Jerry's solo stuff.
AIC is dead. it's gone. they should let it rest in peace and just start a new project.
I know what you mean, but all in all it's just a name. If they want to call themselves AIC and save the trouble, let them. They deserve it. Either way, the new stuff will be just as good or exceed Degradation Trip, one of the truly criminally underrated albums out there.

Couldn't agree more about Degredation Trip. Killer album, would be befitting as a follow up to AiC S/T. Those people who say Boggy Depot is better are kidding themselves.
Anyway, new song sounds cool to me. Looking forward to hearing the full release.
New album is out on the 29th of Sept.
Tracklisting is:
All Secrets Known
Check My Brain
Last of My Kind
Your Decision
A Looking in View
When the Sun Rose Again
Acid Bubble

Private Hell
Black Gives Way to Blue
Supposedly Elton John is playing Piano on Black Gives Way to Blue
some of those names give me bad vibes. oh well. looking forward to listening anyways.
Like the first single but its not AIC and the Elton John colab has me a little worried tbh.
Yeah, layne really put the 'dark' feel into their music.
I await with batted breath....
I do like the second single. It does seem to have Jerry's solo vibe, but I think that was a given.
I wonder if Mike Inez is regretting turning down Metallica yet
The second single? Could you hook us up?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLkCdGQU3lU
well, that's a pretty good song. I'm glad they're trying hard to keep the true AiC sound. I'm still a bit scared they just wanna ride on the mainstream rock wave going on right now. and I have a really hard time taking lyrics with "California" in the chorus seriously...
in both these songs I hear a lot more Jerry than William though. do they just sound so similar or is William barely singing on these songs?
The song is about Jerry living out in California and adapting to it after all the depressing shit in Seattle/Layne's death.
Jerry sings a lot on the new album.
Aaaahhh....tears have filled my bones

I'm totally excited about it,I've been a fan since I was in 8th grade (1992 I think?),it's just soo much different to me without Layne. They're headlining this thing called Buzz Fest here in Nashville Friday ( along with Mudvayne,Chevelle,Cage the Elephant,Cavo and Framing Hanley).

I'm actually getting more excited about this now. A Looking in View is an awesome song and really gives me some good ol' AIC vibes. dunno about Check My Brain yet, it sounds more like a pop-ish AIC rip-off. but it's not bad.
I'm not going to lie. First time I heard Check My Brain I thought it was Layne singing, like an old song off some album I hadn't heard since I never listened to all their albums. Shit..I was surprised when I found it out it was their new single.

I don't know wether to cry out of joy or sadness when I think I hear Layne's voice on this record.
either way, they've made sure his spirit lives on in the music. god, I miss him.
Jerry never let's people down. It is terrible that Layne is not on this album, but the album is pure magic. Not one bad song on the whole thing. My favorite songs are All Secrets Known, Acid Bubble, Private Hell, and Last of My Kind

haha, that was hilarious. true AIC style.
The album is way better than expected, a comeback as AIC deserved. My only critic is that they were a bit repetivive on melody aspects. Many songs share the same chord progression.
still better than nothing. thanks, mate.
What's your full opinion of the album , Jacob?
I've been hesitating to say anything about it because I honestly haven't made up my mind yet.
I'll give you a more detailed opinion tomorrow, but so far I like it a lot more than I thought I would.
Having been around for the first incarnation of Alice and getting all their albums when they were actually released I was really looking forward to this album.
Have it on pre-order, so downloaded anyway.
On first listen, not as immediate as previous albums and I was initially disappointed that not many real heavy rockers on it.
However, after repeated listens it is definitely a grower.
Looking forward to seeing them live in November.
The last time I saw Alice In Chains 'proper' (apart from Download Festival 2006 with William DuVall) was in 1993 at the Camden Underworld in London....

omg, I hate you.
Damn that awesome, defsteve.
I've been having everything AiC on repeat, for the last 4 days, just to calm my nerves. 1 more week!
So as someone else mentioned here I heard the new Alice in Chains song on the radio and I just assumed it was one of their old songs (not the biggest fan so I don't know all of their material). I was blown away to find out that it was in fact their new song. I really thought this new album deal was sort of a cop out, like Guns N Roses coming back but no, this sounds legit. Well done Alice in Chains.
ok, so here are my thoughts on the new album...
first of all, it's a great album and I like every song. some more than others. and it sounds classic AIC, that's for sure. but I miss Layne and without him it doesn't matter how much AIC the music sounds. because he had something neither William nor Jerry have... let's just call it soul. Jerry is amazing and I really love him. and yes, he is often underrated by people who don't realize that he actually wrote more of the lyrics than Layne did. and people don't give him enough credit for his voice. but what made AIC so amazing for me was the combination of Jerry and Layne. Layne's voice brought Jerry's material to an entirely different level, not to mention the stuff he wrote himself. and while William does an impressive job immitating Layne, he is not Layne and he totally lacks the "soul" Layne brought to the music.
I like Williams voice a lot. especially when he sing together with Jerry. but I don't like seeing him on stage. he just doesn't fit in. he's too much of your typical "rockstar" if you ask me. he goes up on stage and does an awesome job, his voice sounds amazing, he connects with the audience and so on. but that's never really what AIC was about to me. I like how introverted (can I use that word like this?) Layne was, it was part of the whole act. and even in the later years when his voice got worse and he barely moved, he still brought so much more personality and flavor to the band. so yeah, I'm having a bit of a tough time with William. I like him and I accept him as their new singer, but he doesn't come close to filling Layne's shoes and even though that might not be what he or anyone else wants, it still leaves a huge gaping hole.
as for the music itself, it's impressive how much of their old sound they've been able to keep. in fact, it almost sounds as if they've really gone back and found parts that you can consider "typical AIC". while this is great because it's something reuniting bands rarely do, it also feels a bit weird and sometimes it creates sort of a "forced" sound. take Private Hell for example - it's probably my favorite song on the album, but to be truthful it sounds like a rehashed/reworked version of Down In A Hole. the same could be said for several other songs or part of songs. this also leaves me a bit split up over what to feel when I listen to the album - on the one hand, I really feel like I'm listening to a brand new AIC album and I'm really happy and excited about that. on the other hand, I keep thinking back on their old work and thinking stuff like "oh, that part they got from that song" and "hmm, they've done this before".
all in all, I'm glad to have them back and I'm really happy for the guys because they seem to be enjoying themselves and finally coping with the loss of their brother. and I'm really enjoying the album. bu it's not t the AIC that has been a huge part of my life (basically all I listened to when I was 13-15 and has been a top 5 favorite ever since). granted, they had already split up when I started listening to them, but before Layne passed away there was still hope for him to come back. and after he passed I still had a reunited AIC to look forward to. now that the day is here the "true" AIC only feels even farther away.
sorry for the essay, but you asked what I thought and I answered :P
5 days left... :D
Black Gives Way to Blue is fucking amazing. Love it.

OK, listened to the album pretty well yesterday and I like it. For some reason media is really embracing this release and their return. I always felt that AIC never got the respect or cudos that they deserved in the early 90's and it took Creed, Staind, Godsmack and Nickleback to get them some credit for their influence. I remember an old quote from Phili Anselmo who said that AIC were the most successful band of the grunge era. Not because of album sales, number 1 hits or awards, but because of the number of bands they influenced and the amount of artist's love them.
I seems quite natural after Tripod, but it does feel a lot like dirt era to me. There is still the twisted darkness that layne seemed to bring out.
I'm really digging Williams vocals. He has Layne's style down quite well, but he doesn't seem copying him, more influenced by him. The fucker can sing good!
Best rhythm section ever. Mike Inez is once again put such a classic sludgy feel on it.
I don't think I need to say how good Jerry is. The guy could put out an album of spoon tapping and I'd still fucking like it. He's always been my favourite all round player.
...and lastly, thank God that their are some cool solos. It;s been missing for a long time

Yeah, I kind of agree. What makes it work for me is that Jerry does so much of the vocals, and that when the two sing together it's kinda reminiscent of Jerry and Layne. On his own, he's nothing special, but I think they managed to find someone who, together with the rest of the band, lets them stay true to the AIC sound. Which I think is all they aimed for. I'm glad they didn't go for some typical rock star clown trying to replace Layne. This new guy feels more like a back-up singer than anything. The original members are still the stars in this outfit.

i'm kinda bummed. i dont like it nearly as much as i did bgwtb after one listen. some tracks sound nothing like aic (low ceiling, scalpel). scalpel is my far my least favorite, it drags and drags and drags. not a good track at all. low ceiling and breath on a window arent very good either. the last three tracks make up for it though.
phantom limb is the best track and its not even fucking close. go figure william wrote it and sings lead on it. I figured William would sing lead more on this album but noooooooope >:(
definitely their lightest record. I really, really wanted to love this :(

Just gave it a spin.
Sadly, it's pretty forgettable on first listen.
The songs we've already heard before the leak (Hollow, Stone, Phantom Limb) are easily the best.
Lab Monkey and title track are pretty cool too.
I've had 4 full listens now and its better. But still doesnt touch bgwtb.
dont get me wrong, i like this record but my expectations were sky high for it. still buying it on tuesday for sure
Yeah, after BGWTB I actually expected more. That album sounded more like AIC than I would ever have dared hoping for (hell, I was even complaining that some songs sounded like reworked AIC classics), and even if I was a bit let down at first it grew on me and I ended up loving it. I'm going to give this one a fair chance as well, but to be honest nothing really stands out, and like I said before a lot of the songs sound very similar. And this time it sounds like they've tried developing a new sound rather than make it sound like old AIC.
There are some good songs though. Stone, Phantom Limb, Lab Monkey amongst others.
i really like the title track, lab monkey, phantom limb and hung on a hook a lot. choke is pretty damn good too. Slowly warming up to this
So yeah, this album is really growing on me!

Yep, the more I listen to it, the better it's gotten.

My first impressions are that it sounds a little more cohesive than BGWTB, in the sense that BGWTB was their first step back into the world as a creative entity, and this album is more naturally branching out from that. But on the other hand, not a ton of songs stood out, either. Probably going to take a few listens before it all starts sinking in, but that's not a bad thing.
I'm also starting to open up for this album. I think it's inevitable that I will always feel like Layne is missing. But like I said, I don't feel like DuVall is walking in there, taking up his place and trying to be a copy of Layne. And there's some fantastic material on this album, I think I just didn't expect such a change in sound since a lot of BGWTB did sound more like classic Alice. It's a good sign when I can't even come up with some names for favorite songs. There are so many. Still, not as good as BGWTB. But I'm fucking glad this band is still around and putting out music.
An interesting interview with Sean, very much on the subject: http://www.bravewords.com/news/204863 (http://www.bravewords.com/news/204863)
