Seeing as we have a 'Best Vocalists' thread, thought I'd start a relative thread. Don't know if this shit's already been done but ah well, what the hey...
Yeah so my favourite lyricist, it's probably a toss up between Chino (the subtleties), Robert Smith (the imagery) and Maynard (the combination of both the previous). So what's yours dudes?

Me too, me too! Good choices too man! Funny thing is though, with Mike Patton, he treats lyrics more like a chore, according to him, as he put it 'i dont just sit down, look off into the sunset and find devine inspiration' and talks about how he gets his point across musically rather than lyrically! But hell, he does write good lyrics!

Man thats sad. Patton doesnt write good lyrics? ok i guess its my taste. I love people with Variety in their lyrics and also people that have fun with it and just make it flow well.
The Booklet of lyrics for Faith No More's the real thing needs to be put up on a plaque. for brilliance.

Chino Moreno - DeftonesQuote from: Crazylegs on Apr 03, 2006, 04:44 PM
I have no idea, but it sure as hell ain't Chino
Not saying he's the best lyricist in the world, but come on man! Chino writes some awesome lyrics. Better than most bands today. But again, your opinion is your opinion...
Aaron Weiss - mewithoutYouI'm not a practising Christian nor am I crazy religious, but this guy's lyrics are seriously some of the most poetic, passionate, and just beautiful lyrics I have ever heard/read.
Johnny Whitney and Jordan Billie - Blood BrothersCrazy satirical lyrics about everything around us. The stories and metaphors they come up with are freakin' brilliant.
That's it for now.
i don't understand why everyone jumps in with maynard, i seriously think tool just live off their own self induced hype, i don't think their lyrics or image are half as clever, cryptic or out of the norm as they would have you believe.
As cliched as they have become I like kobains lyrics, not sure why and i like that, grew up with it i suppose, can;t understand what he's saying most of the time. Just look up the penny royal tea lyrics.
Chino, Don Mclean, PearlJam, The Libertines (that will go down well here), Late Radiohead
1.billy corgan, 2. frank black/ black francis...3...still thinking about that.
Chino, Maynard, Trent, Stephen Richards, Chad Gray (esp. on LD50), MCUD, Marilyn Manson, Zack del la Rocha, Rob Zombie (with White Zombie), Billy Corgan, Lynn Strait, Beck, Johnny Cash
Maynard James Keenan
Chino Moreno
Tupac Amaru Shakur (2PAC)
Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.)
hard question..
John Frusciante is my favourite lyricist ever, listen to Niandra LaDes & Usually Just a T-shirt and u might see why.
others...
Jim Morrison
Cedric Bixler-Zavala
Roger Waters
Thom Yorke
Chino
Maynard James Keenan

Damn straight! I've been reading alot of his lyrics lately, and they really hit you hard. The whole depth within in them, it blows me away! 'Jane Doe' that song, is just amazing...
"These floods of you are unforgiving
Pushing passed me spilling through the banks
And I fall
Faster than light and faster than time
That's how memory works
At least in the dark where I'm searching for meaning
When I'm just searching for something
I want out
Out of every ackward day
Out of every tongue tied loss
I want out
Out of the burdening nightsweats
Out of the rising seas of blood
Lost in you like saturday nights
Searching the streets with bedroom eyes
Just dying to be saved
Run on girl, run on"
NORMA JEAN - Memphis Will Be Laid To Rest
-------------------------------------------------------
waltz around the room with a glaze in your stare. In your tuxedo suit.
I will give it a name. Lower you defenses. Lower you casket. Open the door
and open your grave. Murder. Now you're doing the waltz with your murder.
Mediocrity is the Killer. You find yourself helpless. Christ is not a fasion, fleeting away.
Fasion. He laid emralds in her eyes but I'd already tried a bracelet made of gold and
scarlet thread around her wrist. Everything was wrong, so we sang sentimental songs. "oh
how seldom we belong, but how elegant our kiss!" We painted crooked lines, but we danced in
perfect time to a love so much refined we know not what it is until like a dullen wine we
pour into a grief we'd know before, but never quite like this. All I know now is regret,
it follows like a sillouete along the cobblestone behind me, but has nothing much to say
except to innocently ask, its voice delicate as glass "do you see me when we pass?"
but I continue on my way.
CONVERGE - Last Light
-------------------------------------------------------
i need you to be the strength of widows and soul survivors
i need you to be as fearless as new mothers and new fathers
i need you to be the hope of hearts who lost true love
i need you to be the might of their first kiss
i need a purpose and i need a reason
i need to know that there is trophy and meaning
to all that we lose and all we fight for
to all our loves and our wars
keep breathing
keep living
keep searching
keep pushing on
keep bleeding
keep healing
keep fading
keep shining on
this is for the hearts still beating
DEFTONES - Lotion
-------------------------
i meant to come back to put out bliss
but the style is crumbling, covered canned
it was sick and no you dont even know how it comes
shifts then gets ruined by you fucking slobs
but it's classical anyways
i can't help it makes me so sick over and over
it sits stiff bound with no heart
fine cause this is where the seperation starts arising
i can see it coming over your cloud
and it's classical anyways
and how cool are you i remember
just a bad call, it's so funny how you think
im so serious but that's not it
the thing is i dont give enough to give a fuck
you're plain boring and you bore me asleep
but it's classical anyways
how cool are you i remember
and i feel sickened
and who the fuck are you anyway you suck
it's making sick sense
seeing how you're sticking out hardly and hoping money
please arise up off the fucking knees
and hop off the train for a second
and try to find your own fucking heart

Also i love DEFTONES - S.T. i think they are the best.

i like the fact that he dosen't even have to say a cohesive sentence or even finish certain words or even understand what he is saying at all to really feel the message. The "You Fail Me" album has some of the best lyrics put down to paper in my opinion.
Aimee Echo's lyrics for Human Waste Project's "e-lux" album are also favorites of mine

and then you struggle under quake.
hope you never stop.

"Give me your eyes
That I might see the blind man kissing my hands
The sun is humming
My head turns to dust as he plays on his knees
And the sand
And the sea grows
I close my eyes
Move slowly through drowning waves
Going away on a strange day
And I laugh as I drift in the wind
Blind
Dancing on a beach of stone
Cherish the faces as they wait for the end
A sudden hush across the water
And we're here again...
And the sand
And the sea grows
I close my eyes
Move slowly through drowning waves
Going away
On a strange day
My head falls backs
And the walls crash down
And the sky
And the impossible
Explode
Held for one moment I remember a song
An impression of sound
Then everything is gone
Forever
A strange day..."
*****************************************************************
"It doesn't matter if we all die
Ambition in the back of a black car
In a high building there is so much to do
Going home time
A story on the radio...
Something small falls out of your mouth
And we laugh
A prayer for something better
A prayer
For something better
Please love me
Meet my mother...
But the fear takes hold
Creeping up the stairs in the dark
Waiting for the death blow
Stroking your hair as the patriots are shot
Fighting for freedom on the television
Sharing the world with slaughtered pigs
Have we got everything?
She struggles to get away...
The pain
And the creeping feeling
A little black haired girl
Waiting for Saturday
The death of her father pushing her
Pushing her white face into the mirror
Aching inside me
And turn me round
Just like the old days
Just like the old days
Caressing an old man
And painting a lifeless face
Just a piece of new meat in a clean room
The soldiers close in under a yellow moon
All shadows and deliverance
Under a black flag
A hundred years of blood
Crimson
The ribbon tightens round my throat
I open my mouth
And my head bursts open
A sound like a tiger thrashing in the water
Thrashing in the water
Over and over
We die one after the other
Over and over
We die one after the other after the other...
It feels like a hundred years
One hundred years... "

Vacate is the word...vengeance has no place so near to her
Cannot find the comfort in this world
Artificial tear...vessel stabbed...next up, volunteers
Vulnerable, wisdom can't adhere...
A truant finds home...and I wish to hold on...
But there's a trapdoor in the sun...immortality...
Vacate is the word...vengeance has no place so near to her
Cannot find the comfort in this world
Artificial tear...vessel stabbed...next up, volunteers
Vulnerable, wisdom can't adhere...
A truant finds home...and I wish to hold on...
But there's a trapdoor in the sun...immortality...
As privileged as a whore...victims in demand for public show
Swept out through the cracks beneath the door
Holier than thou, how?
Surrendered...executed anyhow
Scrawl dissolved, cigar box on the floor...
A truant finds home...and I wish to hold on, too...
But saw the trapdoor in the sun...
Immortality...
I cannot stop the thought...I'm running in the dark...
Coming up a which way sign...all good truants must decide...
Oh, stripped and sold, mom...auctioned forearm...
And whiskers in the sink...
Truants move on...cannot stay long
Some die just to live... Ohh...
Underneath this smile lies everything
All my hopes and anger, pride and shame
Make myself a pact not to shut doors on the past
Just for today I am free
I admit it...what's to say
I'll relive it...without pain
backstreet lover on the side
of the road
I got a bomb in my tmeple
that is gonna explode
I got a .16 gauge buried
under my clothes...I play.
once upon a time I could control myself
once upon a time I could lose myself
oh try and mimic..what's insane
I am in it...where do I stand?
indian summer I hate the heat
I got a backstreet lover on the passenger seat
I got my hand in my pocket
so determined
discreet...I pray.
once upon a time I could control myself
once upon a time I could lose myself
once upon a time I could love myself
once upon a time I could love myself
once
once
once
i've used hammers made out of wood
i have played games with pieces and rules
i undeciphered tricks at the bar
but now you're gone, i haven't figured out why
i've come up with riddles and jokes about war
i've figured out numbers and what they're for
i've understood feelings and i've understood words
but how could you be taken away?
and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...today just disappeared
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars
with heavy breath, awakened regrets
back pages and days alone that could have been spent, together..
but we were miles apart
every inch between us becomes light years now
no time to be void or save up on life
you got to spend it all..
and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...you seem to like it here
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars
and wherever you've gone
and wherever we might go
it don't seem fair...today just disappeared
your light's reflected now, reflected from afar
we were but stones, your light made us stars
routine was the theme, he'd wake up and...wash and pour himself into uniform
something he hadn't imagined being...
as the merging traffic passed, he found himself staring, down, at his own hands..
not remembering the change, not recalling the plan, was it...?
he was okay, but wondering about wandering
was it age? by consequence? or was he moved by sleight of hand?
mondays were made to fall, lost on a road he knew by heart
it was like a book he read in his sleep, endlessly...
sometimes he hid in his radio, watching others pull into their homes
while he was drifting...
on a line, of his own, off the line, on the side
by the by, as dirt turned to sand, as if moved by sleight of hand
when he reached the shore of his clip-on world
he resurfaced to the norm
organized his few things, his coat and keys...
any new realizations would have to wait til he had more time, more time...
time to dream, to himself
he waves goodbye, to himself
i'll see you on the other side...
another man...moved by sleight of hand...
excuses turn to carbon walls
blame it all on chemical intercourse
the swallowed seeds of arrogance
breeding in the thoughts of ten thousand fools that fight irreverance
the full moon is dead skin
the one down here's wearing thin
so set are the ten pins as the human tide rolls in
like a ball that's spinning
bombs dropping down
overhead, underground
it's instilled...to wanna live
bombs dropping down, please forgive
our hometown in our insignificance
turn the jukebox up he said
dancing in irreverance
play c3, let the song protest
the plates began to shift
perfect lefts come rolling in
i was alone and far away, hey..
when i heard the band start playin'
on the lip...late take off
bombs dropping down
overhead, underground
it's instilled...to wanna live
bombs dropping down, please forgive
our hometown in our insignificance
feel like resonance of distance
in the blood...the iron lies
it's instilled...
to wanna live
bombs dropping down, please forgive
our hometown in our insignificance
oh in our insignificance

fucking hell, just looked at my old posts on this forum, kind of gone off pearl jam now, im liking billy corgans older stuff at the moment although looking at it retrospectively some of the lyrics sound a bit contrived now that we have 'emo music'.
Chino is definitely one of my favourite vocalists.
Phil Bretnall from Profane [http://www.myspace.com/profane] has also written some awesome lyrics. In a weird way, they sometimes remind me a lot of Chino's in the sense that sometimes they never really make sense at all... I'd like to sit and type out lyrics from their entire album but that would take too long :] So here's a few of my favourites of his:
Like Branding The Cattle - my favourite song of theirs :D
Though I cried for you I'll never sit through another day of burning
Your trust gave away a pre-emptive look at the way the tide is turning
A slight glimpse of how this waste of organs let the weakness grip
Heed the red time, for...
Read the next line, waste of life
To waste away, a lack of contradictions fade
And I'll save this day to my hideaway
And I waste away to a dead like state
Proven ways, fuck me like I said
Turning Bloodletting Into An Artform
Rise
Waste one more time
Past regrets shine
Raised in shadow, the god of emphasis
You accepted, bleeded into pulp
Not accepting the facts of this defined
Never question, reasons plagued with lies
Waste one more time
Past regrets shine
I take this time to say, if ever there was an easy way
The reason is too long
With every day, mime, readied with your haste
To acrid end mine, readied with no sense
Wake time, line ends
I Think I've Outstayed My Welcome
Beg to differ, sordid like an angel's filthy wing
Steal the pleasure born
And I'm coming back to you
By crook or fist I'll lather up your gracious smile and take my time
Blackened fingers always tell me where you might've been
And I'll be waiting numb
And I thought you would know by now
A brave assumption, realised by months of waiting clean
Forever rue my day
Well I'm coming back to find
You've turned off that little switch inside my gracious fallen tide
Without cause of immediacy
Graphic depictions, rational beauty
Bled through filters to analyse depth
Auspicious descent into drowning
His lyrics are a bit odd but I like them a lot, and he's a cool guy too :]
Also very high on my list:
Matt Fox and Matt Fletcher - Shai Hulud
Brock Lindow - 36 Crazyfists
Grady Avenell - ex - Will Haven
Serj Tankian - System Of A Down
Keith Buckley, no doubt, very entertaining and witty lyrics.
Jake Bannon, Cedric Bixler, Adrian Belew, Mike Patton

i don't understand why everyone jumps in with maynard, i seriously think tool just live off their own self induced hype, i don't think their lyrics or image are half as clever, cryptic or out of the norm as they would have you believe.
