Thanks to BigDave, I have discovered the amazingness of Blackwater Park. I love the balance between the death metal vocals and heaviness, and the mellow, acoustic progressive style. It works so effectively, this is an album I could listen to any time.
So, which Opeth album should I check out next? Damnation was the first one I heard and I really wasn't that keen, so exclude that one.
Thanks in advance people.
i liked Ghost Reveries a lot. this album has some heavy stuff, but there are mellow songs too. Opeth have a great talent in changing the tempo, the mood of their songs... Ghost of perdition is a grat song!
That's their latest album isn't it? Ok I'll download some songs from it and have a listen. Thanks a lot 333tone, karma for you. Have you heard any of their other albums?
yeah, it's their latest. i've heard Blackwater Park, and i agree with you. lately i heard Deliverance(2002), it's heavy too. the album that made them "famous" is their third, My Arms, Your Harse(had very good reviews). Still Life(1999) had even more progressive influences. in my opinion Opeth are a leading force in progressive death metal. and they've been a band since 1990
Thanks for the info dude! I'm downloading some of their stuff now, I'll check out Deliverance too.
no problem, thanks for the karma ;)
I'm digging Ghost Reveries alot. Great album.
It's a little hard getting used to the growling, but I love the way he switches between the deep growls to the melodic singing.
I'm hearing alot of Porcupine Tree in their music.
Seeing them on Roskilde. Should be fun.

I love the death growl he uses, I dunno how to explain it, it's harsh but relaxing at the same time... Especially the way he switches it up as you said, it's really effective. Oh and I read that someone from Porcupine Tree produced Blackwater Park, hence you being able to hear their influence in Opeth's music.
I've been getting into progressive rock/metal lately, so I've been meaning to check out some Porcupine Tree actually. Could you recommend an album of theirs I should listen to first?
In Absentia is their best album imo. A true masterpiece.
Deadwing and Lightbulb Sun are also excellent albums.
Thanks man, karma for your help.
Blackwater Park is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion! It's one of the most satisfying progressive albums you can find, everything flows well together, it's just awesome! Ghost Reveries is cool as well, but Blackwater Park is what I'd tell people to check out if they want to get into Opeth! And yeah, Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree produced Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Damnation.
opeth? aren't they some nu-metal band?
Far from it my man! I think you're getting mixed up with Otep!

I think it's their best.
thanks man, kk.
Holy fuck, Blackwater Park is blowing me away!
I'm slowly getting used to the growls.
The good thing about his growls: you are able to understand what he singing.
But yeah, fucking kickass album.
Thanks for introducing me to these guys, Chrisbo!
Hey no problem dude! As I said before, Blackwater Park is a modern day classic, the whole flow of that album is fucking great! Glad you dig it!

I love Otep, I've got all their albums, they are sorta nu-metal, but much better than most of it, theres a lot of pain in the songs, but it's real pain. and another reason I love the band, they actually give a shit a shit about their fans, go to their website and check out the I am I, and you are not alone sections and you'll see what I mean
burden is a fucking wonderful tune
this album is super tight so far. i really like the first five tracks a shitload, i haven't really had a chance to listen to the last 2 a lot though.
Opeth is fucking amazing, I've been getting into them alot over the past few months. I have to say I'm more excited about the new album than I have been about any new album since The Mars Volta.
YEEEESSSSSSSS WATERSHED JUST LEAKED. downloading that shit right now, found as I was coincidentally listening to the lotus eater.
EDIT: nvm....im just slow.
Opeth? nu-metal? what did I miss?

Otep...not Opeth.
oh fuck me. I really do need glasses. or maybe I just need to pay more attention.
another reason to always stay on topic: I never know what's going on otherwise.... :P
hooooly crap this cd is amazing. hessian peel is the shit, i love fredrik akesson's shredzorz on that song especially, but they really rule on the whole cd. excellent complement to mikael's playing.

...
Hi5?
i'm gonna have to go ahead and bump this thread to declare once again how great this album is. opeth rulz at what they do.
come on, is nobody else feelin this cd super hard right now?
hessian peel might be my favorite song ever made. like fr rlz
fuck yeah, last weekend i went to the last show of the first ever southamerican leg. it was their biggest show to date (by themselfs) a bit more than 4000 people, and it was definitly one of their most intense shows ever. look for the chilean date on youtube and all the other sites now. it was amazing. ill post my videos soon.
Me and my buddy are catching them on the 16 of May. Stoked.
They're pretty fucking special live. Tore the place apart.
awesome art work for their new album
(http://www.metalinjection.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Opeth-Heritage-album-cover-604x604.jpg)
and a new song that's been on repeat for all day for me.
Opeth - The Devil's Orchard (High Quality) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cICaGUOQleU#)
Damn, I had no idea they had a new album coming out. Fuck yeah.
2011 is shaping up to be an awesome year for new albums.
Heard the new tune yesterday and i was blown away. The new stuff sounds really promising. This new album is going to kick ass.
Heritage is so booooring!
What a disappointment.
I like the build-ups into something huge. But most of the tracks just go overboard. I've only given it 2 listens, so I will be trying it more since I love Opeth.
But yeah, so far, I'm kind of let down with this.
Aww man. I hope it like it more than you guys have.
Heritage is growing on me. Maybe I'm just in the mood for long, dramatic songs today, but it's gotten multiple spins the last couple days, and it's got some really good tracks like Devil's Orchard, Haxprocess, and I Feel the Dark.
i've been too nervous to listen, but the reviews on sputnik make me feel better. i'll rock it on the way home.
I'll give it another listen, but I really miss the energy and the growls from previous albums.
