i thought there was a thread for him and his work already... it vanished.
INLAND EMPIRE preimered last night.. word has it, it was fantastico.. any one see it? probably just the new yorkers, since its screening is on the DL... but anyway we can talk about his other work if one is so inclined. ;)
sup vida.
Lynch is a fucking psycho and i love it.
i watched 'lost highway' a couple of weeks ago and i still havent figured it out. total mindfuck.
my favorite of his, so far, is 'mulholland drive'. i love that movie.
definitely looking forward to his new one.
lost highway is obviously a superb movie, and sound track...
acid jazz acid jazz...perfect drug...and old school manson...
is it just me or does that part when their at that party, with that old guy who looks like he's been antiqued, freak the hell out of you..
btw, "antiquing" is when someone throws a bag of white flour at you. you become an antique.
the 'mystery man' with the camera ?
i've been waiting for inland empire for like 2 years.
i can't wait till it shows at some artsy theatre near me..i'll be there opening night. however, i'm a bit skeptical becuase he shot the whole thing on DV....which sucks in my opinion. i'm sure the story/themes will be fantastic, but DV looks like complete shit compared to film. surprises me that lynch would give in.

I think that's my favorite part in the whole film. The first time I saw it it gave me chills. It was just so damn good.
And I agree with you, one weak. The one thing I love about Lynch is the fact that he used film. His movies work great on film because film is so romantic. I could go on about how film is better than DV, but I'll stop here.
I really,
really need to see
Inland Empire.

yeah, he looks pretty fucked up
an interesting thing about that
Lynch said he was inspired by the OJ Simpson trial when he decided to make Lost Highway. And lo and behold, the old guy who looks like he's been antiqued is Robert Blake, who went on to murder his own wife a few years after the movie. Coincidence? There's more!
So Robert Blake plays this spectre, this man-in-white, an omen of things to come
Bill Pullman then kills his wife...wait, did he kill his wife? What really happened...All I know is about 7 years later Robert Blake allegedly killed his own wife..wait, did he kill his wife? What really happened?
I say this to build up to the one piece of dialogue in the entire movie that just blows my mind, and that's when the prison guards have the following brief conversation...
Guard 1: Hey, that wife killer is looking pretty fucked up!
Guard 2: Which one?
Guard 1 and Guard 2: HAHAHAHAHHAHA!
....it's been a pleasure talking to you.
i watched lost highway for the 2nd time last night. and yea i still don't get it; i had my old theory in my head whilst watching it but there was tons that didn't fit it. it's definately more complex that mulholland drive. which is maybe why i prefer mulholland drive...

i just finished downloading Twin Peaks Seasons 1 and 2, and from what i've seen so far it's fuckin excellent. i also downloaded Blue Velvet, but i havent gotten around watching it tho. but im lookin foward to it.

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE !
nope, it may never get to colorado in theatres and i'm bummed cuase i've never seen lynch on the big screen (well, i have but on DVD....and that's just fucking dumb compared to seeing lynch on film. or in this case, on a digital projection of a digitally shot movie).
I'm eager to see Inland Empire.

i heard that movie is getting really good reviews
so im def excited for that
twin peaks freaked me out again last night. righteous.
on a more important note:
i think i might use found footage from Lynch's films in my senior filmmaking thesis. i'm gonna transfer all the shit i need from dvd to 16mm film and then fuck with it on an optical printer and see what i can come up with.
stayed tuned, if this pans out like i hope it does, i'll post some in-progress work.
^ace
inland empire is coming to an indie theatre in the city i'm living in atm. i'm pretty excited.
David Lynch is for pseudos.
In heaven everything is fine.
you dont know what you are talking about
decide
um im kinda starting to get over david. but hes still fun to talk about.
wait till everyone sees inland empire. i bet this thread will be riddled with exciting confusion!!!!!
ya, youre right. i dont mean to sound like a debbie downer... but its just like, ive think ive had every possible discussion on lynch... and im waiting for either a.) a bigger better lynch flick to come out and shake some sense into me (i havent seen inland) or b.) a new filmmaker who blows david out of the water... but even at that, lynch is classic, and i bet that new kid, was influenced by him...
what new kid?
i doubt anyone will blow him out of the water...lynch is lynch.
how can one 'get over lynch' ?
doesn't make sense.
i've yet to see 'eraserhead' (it's impossible to find on dvd here)
can't fucking wait for 'inland empire'.
ya, your right. that doesnt makes sense. how stupid of me to suggest that people change preferences as they mature into adults....
@ one weak. anythings possible... at one point charlie chaplin was considered the most innovative film maker of all time..what i was trying to conclude is from a film theory perspective, i think that there are already and will be "new kids" to blow lynch out of the water...as far as film criticism goes, that will always be an upward battle..
yeah, because lynch is only for kids ::)
I think what she means is there will always be new, up and coming directors to better what he's doing.
It's hard to beat Lynch. Lynch is in a league of his own fucked up world. You really can't top his work and I have yet to see someone who has, at least someone new and fresh.

there will always be new directors, but they're not going to better what he's done, they'll do something totally new and great.
no one is blowing hitchock out of the water

i'd wish lynch never had made 'dune'.
seriously, that movie blows.
haha, he's back.
The only two movies I refuse to see by him are Dune and Straight Story. I'm a shitty fan.
i ordered 'wild at heart' yesterday. haven't seen it before.

dune is an interesting one. if you ever decide to see it, research the backstory and all the problems they had with getting it made. the studio was really fucking him...this was really lynch's turning point to remain a cult director; to return to making films that he loved and not because the studio wanted him to.
if i'm not mistaken, Lucas wanted him to direct return of the jedi after Dune. hahaa

edit: Theis....i just looked at your DVD collection. how can you afford that many movies??!!!
haha, i really can't afford it. i tend to spend waaay too many money on dvd's.
but i try to buy most of them on bargains.
btw, david lynch was in denmark 2 days ago, signing his new book, and i didnt know about it.. it really fucking sucks since he's one of the few people i'd REALLY like to meet. i'm so bummed about it.
and it's really strange that you watched wild at heart last night, cause so did i.
i was a little disspointed i must say. it was too simple for a lynch movie. but entertaining nonetheless.
willem dafoe = awesome.
how come no one mentioned the elephant man yet? ???
I've never watched The Elephant Man all the way through, but I should.
Wild At Heart is just good for the freaky factor. It's one of my least favorite Lynch films, but it's Lynch so it still means it's good.

yah, i agree man.. lately ive really been in to john cassavetes
i've been watching some experimental films a lot in college and i get the feeling that some of the elements that seem so original in david lynch's films, are actually influenced by these old obscure experimentalists

Yeah, I think the clues are just a tease. I own the coffee table book DAVID LYNCH: CATCHING THE BIG FISH, written by the man himself. One chapter is entitled THE BOX AND THE KEY, and all that this chapter contains is the words "I don't have a clue what those are."

Got the complete Twin Peaks series (Gold Box Edition) for Christmas and I just finished it all tonight.
goddamnit, what an incredible show. some of the images from the show will remain in my head forever.
So creepy, so funny, so weird...just great.
For some weird reason I never finish watching Twin Peaks, I guess I need to get the dvd instead of watching it on TV cinema channels.
weeee getting inland empire now!
wish me luck
there you go with 3 hours of not knowing what the hell he's trying to say, good luck indeed.
Inland Empire is truly the craziest movie experience i've ever had. but it's an amazing ride. i felt dizzy and uneven after i'd watched it.
yeah I had a big headache after watching it.
did you guys like The Straight Story? definitely not his best, but I saw it on tv a few weeks ago for the first time and thought it was pretty decent. but yeah, obviously nowhere near Mulholland
The Straight Story is the only Lynch flick I haven't seen. it looks really good though.
i've heard from many that it's completely different from anything else he's done.
yeah from Lynch movies I've seen it is different.
But damn dude I still gotta see Inland Empire...
I just realized this site has quite a bit more of my interests than just deftones. To see this many people being fans of lynch made me wet myself. I have everything Twin Peaks after randomly seeing it on my friends webcam and wondering who the hell is that awesome to make a show like that, not to mention the awesome music. And now on to see all the movies, sorry to bring up an old thread but having an actual thread with such a topic - cant pass it up.

I think Lynch is so so overrated, I like some of his movies tho.
Lynch is a pure genius. From Twin Peaks, all the way up to Inland Empire. Each of his movies can stand alone and deliver a different interpretation from person to person. You have to have respect for a filmmaker like that. In a world where Michael Bay summer blockbusters take all the movie buzz, I'm glad there is a person out there like David Lynch.
I didn't mean to unjustly out Michael Bay. I'm still a sucker for Armageddon. :'(

hey there, welcome to the board...glad to see another person who appreciates Lynch!
i recently bought his book, about meditation, consciousness and creativity, called Catching the Big Fish...pretty fascinating stuff.
That book taught me a lot about meditation and his experiences with it. He explains how he gets all of his ideas and whatnot. Cool stuff.
He occasionally goes on Campus tours to speak about meditation, and it's importance on one's well-being. He never comes anywhere close to me though....

i'd love to hear him talk.
people who call him pretentious honestly have no idea what they're talking about. from the interviews i've seen with him he seems like the most down to earth, kind, warm and thoughtful human being.
ahhh, what i'd give to meet him.
Seriously, man. He seems to be such a cool guy.
I wish he would share his meaning behind Erasherhead. It's very abstract, and I love the fact that people are allowed to make their own judgment about it. I would just like to hear what the real meaning was.
What's your favorite Lynch film? In my opinion, nothing can ever can come close to Mulholland Dr. Just a masterpiece of directing.

Mulholland Drive is my favorite movie ever, man! Kudos :)
Twin Peaks is the best show ever, except for some season 2 middle episodes, but it picks up in the end and what an ending!
top 3 Lynch flicks would be:
Mulholland Drive
Blue Velvet
Eraserhead
I love all his movies though...except Dune. I'd love to see his final cut though. such a shame what he experienced with that flick.
Yeah. I've tried so many times to get "into" Dune, but I just couldn't do it.
I consider it the only blemish in his otherwise flawless directorial history.
Any news on what he's doing next?

I saw him a few years ago at UC Irvine. He was giving a lecture on Transcendentalism. The one thing that I remember from that lecture was when he was describing the inside of human beings as "suffocating rubber clowns". Even though I'm not into Transcendentalism, I thought it was a real treat to just hear him talk.
I had a dream about
Mulholland Drive last night, which was weird.
this really isn't a Lynch project, but I keep seeing commercials for this new tv series called Happy Town. looks amazing, and looks VERY similar to Twin Peaks.

anyone seen his short films? I bought the DVD and it's crazy. i'm sure theis has seen it. i highly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of lynch.
also, what do people think about Inland Empire? I know it's been discussed here before, but i could use some discussion to try and get me to watch it again. definitely his most "unaccessible" film. i've only seen it once, and can only say that i've just touched the tip of the proverbial lynch ice-berg of theory behind the film.
I saw half of Inland Empire and fell asleep (I was stupid enough to watch it late at night). It really freaked me out and I haven't touched it since. I've been trying to motivate myself to watching it, but it's definitely something I would have to make time for. Three hours of Lynch can be pretty intense, so I want to watch it when I can really sit down and watch it.

I ordered his short films DVD some days ago, so it's on its way! I've seen The Grandmother and The Alphabet late at night on youtube and they both disturbed me. Great stuff.
I've watched Inland Empire two times. Without a doubt his most draining film. Lynch basically wrote the movie as they were filming it. He didn't have a complete script beforehand. Pretty crazy.
I recently watched his short films. I think The Grandmother by far is my favorite, followed by The Alphabet and Six Men Getting Sick (It took me a while before I realized it kept repeating itself. It's great on how you pick up new things when you watch it multiple times).
The Cowboy and the Frenchman was amusing to a certain degree (Reminded me a lot of Twin Peaks), but I'm more into the creepy Lynch stuff rather than the random Lynch.

I FINALLY watched
Inland Empire in its entirety last night. I figured it would be a good film to watch before Halloween.
I try not to analyze a David Lynch film to death when I watch one of his works for the first time, because I get frustrated. Instead, I just accept the fact that it's going to be confusing, and that usually works in my favor. There were certain points of the film where I felt like it was beginning to make sense, but then something else would happen and I'd be lost all over again. I really can't say too much about the plot at this point, because I don't even fully know what it is. All I do know is that I need to watch it again, but that won't be for a long time. A three hour David Lynch film isn't just something you just sit down and watch. It took me two years to prepare myself for this, so I assume I'll watch it again, maybe, in another year? I'm still processing the film. However, I think my favorite part of the whole film was towards the end on Hollywood and Vine. It was very poetic, and beautifully shot.
I have to admit, I was wary of watching this film because this is the first David Lynch film that was done in digital. I'm so used to seeing his works in film, with minimal camera movement and lush colors. I think David Lynch and film just go hand in hand, but I think Lynch proved that he could work with a digital camera as a medium. It took me about an hour before I got into the swing of things, but of course, Lynch put his mark on the digital camera. Overall, I was pleased and I'm eager to see what he has in store for the future.
With regards to Twin Peaks - I waited an eternity for that second season to come out on DVD, having owned season one for so long. In hindsight it was a blessing really...I originally watched the show when it was on TV, whilst in my early teens, and to be honest I was pretty much forced to stop watching it so closely, once Bob revealed himself in that scene with Madeline. It is the only TV show that has ever properly freaked me out (sure stuff has affected me before - but nothing else to the point of sitting wide awake in bed shitting myself). Pre-that scene, I physically felt my tough guy-edness disintergrate when Bob was walking through the living room, clambering over the sofa....gawd dang that dude was a freaky looking young man. Anyhoo, theres a couple of great books on the show - Full of Secrets, which is a pretty info heavy background to the making of the show, as well as the diary of Laura Palmer by Davids daughter, which works great in much the same way as Fire Walk With Me, with regards to answering questions posed by the show. check em out if you havent already :)
thx for the recommendation. haven't checked those out.
Yeah no probs - thats what I love about Twin Peaks...theres just so much of it. I guess thats why Im so excited about the talk of the TV show hes got in the pipeline...I remember being totally bummed out when the idea for the Mullholland Drive TV show was canned.
yeah, i think that would have been a great tv series. twin peaks was great. the first 2 seasons. love that.
wait, what does he have in the works for tv?
