its also good to know that the English use US Dollars as their currency.

I wouldn't be surprised if these where young people...but it is adults that know nothing outside their doorsteps!!!!

I know being patriotic is a waste of time (Its a round planet afterall), but If I was a yank, I would be ashamed of myself

They always seem to find the most stupid people, and put them on tv. BUT,every country has them, not just here.

But yeah, it's fucking insane to see how many uneducated people there are in the world.

Post by: tension_the_wire on Jan 08, 2007, 02:46 AM
That might be true, but a lot of Americans I have met (and I've met alot) are not dumb or stupid, but really uneducated!

I blame CNN and New Kids On The Block for ruining a generation of thinking
Title: Re: oh noez!!1

New Kids...hey now!!!!! :P

Americas teaching standards are shit. My son is 7 and in second grade. His teacher is a fucking lazy ass hag! She doesnt teach, and expect's them to learn on thier own..they are 7 and 8 years old!

I wish more money was put towards education, but it's not. SO if you want a good education, you most likely have to go to a private school. I'm sending my son to one next year, and yeah it's going to cost $14k a year, but it's soo worth it to me.

It really angers me.

I totally agree. Its so shocking that Governments are more than willing to spend trillons on defence, but bugger all on teaching the future. Did you know that if the American Government spent 60% less on Defence, it would put every American student through private school for free!

We're lucky here in New Zealand. our State Schools are really good. There is bugger all trouble (there is violence and minor bad stuff), but on a whole we're quite good. We have some wicked dedicated teachers here too (me included)

sure, but the thing is... if they had done the same thing in, say... Sweden, all the morons would have been kids 14-18 years old. there wouldn't be old people and people agreeing with everything the president says just because he's the president. ok, so we don't have a president, but you catch my drift.
Title: Re: oh noez!!1
Post by: devilinside on Jan 09, 2007, 12:44 AM
I get ya,but you can't say that  kids 14-18 years old would be the only ones answering wrong. But it's easy I guess to say that cause we here in the US haven't seen cute little tidbit's like that done in other countries. And no,i dont want to hear "well it hasn't been done because we dont have idiots like that here". That's not true.

And yeah, some of the older people didn't know what the shit they were talking about, and i'm not gonna make excuses for them, but i'm sure alot of them grew up in poverty and weren't able to get a proper education.

But regardless,it is ridiculous how little people know, and I wish that they would use the money used for war and helping other people/countries and put towards education.

I also hate how judgemental people are of Americans based on things like that. There are some incredibly brilliant people here, but you never see them.

those dumbass fucktards

Don't you think they should have a group that goes out and asks those type of questions and if the people get them wrong they should beat the shit out of them?

That video made me feel good though, because they all appeared to be functional in society and I'm smarter than any of them.

Sure, there are stupid people in Sweden as well, but I can't begin to imagine you would find anyone as stupid as that. I seriously doubt you would find 1 person that would put a pin on Australia and say it's Irak. Oh yeah and also, wanting to bomb the place. You would have to interview atleast 10.000 people to find that dumbfuck.

People are judgemental because that is what we are shown on the little 3rd eye destroyer (the TV).

The reason people that are not from the USA are so amazed by it is because this is general knowledge that they are being asked...the majority of the world knows what happens outside its window.

Man, I've heard so many people out in the sticks say "Oh we should just turn Iraq into glass"

It's hard to imagine that there are actually people that think like that. But then again, the world is a really fucked up place and nobody knows how to deal with it, so they just use anger and greed and they blindly follow what someone with authority tells them.

ehm I don't know if you misunderstood me or not, but I meant you'll have to interview 10.000 people in Sweden to that person. I have no doubt in my mind what so ever that you could find one in America just by stretching your arm out and stopping someone. Atleast in the central-states.

Maybe I should travel to other countries and have them tell me where Tennessee is,or who signed the Constitution. Google couldn't help ya then. I'm sure most people only know of California,New York,Texas and Florida existing. Does it matter that you know all the states,no,but just to belittle you on camera like it's been done here would be entertainment. I knew all but one of the questions asked on that video. But I know if the tables were turned,no matter how smart you think your country is,you too will have these fucktards. Just because they haven't been video'd,doesn't mean they dont exist in large amounts.
It's easy to bash on a place that you have never been to,or have seen things on tv that portray it in a negative light. But when you're actually here, and interact with more of the people, you would be amazed at how smart MOST of us are.

I didn't misunderstand.

It's wierd to me to hear someone say things like that. Mostly because I live in an extremely open minded part of the U.S...Seattle. And then to go somewhere 150 miles or so away and hear someone say "Turn those towel heads into glass" is mind blowing.

i'm tellin you, listen to south park, 1/4th of americans are retarded.  so the odds of finding someone who doesn't know that kind of shit on the streets is pretty good.  i mean sure, there's smart people, but i mean come on, the way the general public acts, there's no way they're even close to the majority.  i mean, look at the real world.  people love that show, it's had like 11 seasons with some of the biggest fucking retards i have ever seen, and not only has it been kept on the air by popular demand, there's people out there who actually believe those folks on the show have any grasp of rational thought.  just look at american popular culture in general and tell me this country is less than a quarter retarded.

one major difference I think is that the US is one of the few remaining countries who are still very susceptible to propaganda and patriotism. and where those two still manage to run the country.

All compared with television. Reliable source. I have watched the real world a few times, only to see how imature these kids are. But they pick these people for the entertainment value,of course they aren't gonna put alot of smart people in a house, that would be boring. I mean, who want's to hear intelligent conversations? The show is also aimed at a younger crowd, who is easily amused.

If I were to go by what the tv portray's other countries as,then I would have some shit views on them. But I dont go based on that,I make my opinions based on the people I actually talk to.  You just cant judge a book by it's rattey cover.

that dude's such a prick.  i hate how he does this act that's kinda like stand up comedy but not really funny, it's more just like bitching and misinterpreting statistics to his advantage.  moreso i hate that people believe his bullshit, and how people people actually like buy his books and movies.  my sociology teacher showed us one of his videos in class one day for christ's sake.  the whole time he's just laughing his ass off at michael moore and i'm just sitting there like "that's false, that's totally untrue, he's totally spinning that quote to benefit his point."  it's bad stuff, which brings me back to my original point.  so many people buy into this kind of bullshit, i mean look at michael moore for one, scientology for another, pyramid schemes, etc.  these things wouldn't exist if there weren't stupid people to be interested in them.

Kinda like a magpie!

I don't believe in that shit.

I'm not gonna buy some bitch a diamond to get them to like me. If she wants something she can wear on her finger, I'll just jizz in her hand and call it good.

I proposed using a buger ring while she was in poncho.

We're not married yet though! Not till shes knocked up!

a lot of people blame americans for their own ignorance but it just isn't that simple. the ignorance stems from a whole lot of bullshit, people are fed complete lies from the day they open their first textbook. it's all propaganda, patriotic garbage. and american children can't stand it because it's boring. it's boring to hear about all these american 'heroes' because they embody the same tired characteristics as every other hero. start showing the population the muck and you'll get people interested in not only the history of the united states but the effect it's had on the world, and the effect the world has had on the united states. then and only then will they care, and then care enough to push change.

and that's only the case for the privileged kids. people growing up in slums, ghettos, and shitty inner-city school systems don't even have the benefit of being lied to.

America has no need to care because ignorance is bliss.  We know we got money and we got it pretty dam good.  So who the fuck cares about everything else.  Let the politicians deal with all of that other garbage.  because after all.  When all the smoke from all the criticism blows away.  They are obviously doing their job for us to have the economy and status in the world that we have.  Not everyone thinks like this.  But a lot of those "stupid" people in that video probably do.

this is true. the media is a horrible medium for relaying intelligent information and is usually a biased piece of shit...

on the other hand, education is awful in the US relative to the amount of wealth, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out that a lot of people couldn't tell the difference between Iraq and another country in the middle east if asked to do so on a map.

So many children fall through the cracks in the system. if a student has a learning probelm, they are labeled dumb and cast aside. And its not only the states it is the world over.

That's my problem. My son is 7 and in second grade (he's the youngest because they wanted him to start early because he is soo smart) and his teacher is TERRIBLE! All she does is sit on her ass,and tell them to open their books and read. And she expects them to comprehend everything they are reading. They are young kids! Come the fuck on!

I see your point man.  I guess I just believe that if someone really really wants it they can have it.  It takes more than just our education system.  they need parents that motivate them and a drive to get out of poverty.  But I mean shit if they really wanted to they could.  It would take hours of self teaching and reading text books over and over.  But the possibility is there.  and that is more than a lot of countries.  I am not saying that is satisfactory.  But the opportunity is there no matter how small

Its all hands on! i have some students that are lebeled 'dumb' because they don't understand algebra or how a gear train works, but give them a LEGO set and they will create the most amazing models that are geared down.

I would hardly call America a non economic system there smart kid.  And yes, opportunity is there. Take my current roommate for example.  Grew up a broke ass beaner in the bay area.  Went so some shitty schools and was part of a broke ass beaner family.  Then he got his ass beat real real bad at this ghetto ass school he was in so his lazy ass beaner parents finally got off their lazy ass beaner asses and found something out.  YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP!  They applied for a program and he got accepted into a really good-expensive private school where he was pretty much the only beaner amongst all the white kids.  And he got a very good education out of it.  Went to a year of college and could no longer afford it.  So following his parents example, he got off his lazy beaner ass and joined the navy so that he could afford college.  Just one of the many examples of someone overcoming something because they did not wait for it to be handed to them.

and trust me.  You know nothing about me.  I may have never lived in poverty.  This is true.  But I have met a lot of people from many different places.  I may not be able to sympathize with those in poverty in America.  But I can empathize.  Which makes me wonder why they don't do more to help themselves.  This is the day and age of affirmative action.  Might as well take advantage before everyone realizes how racist it is.

yeah, That is how you learn and there is nothing at all wrong with that, but people (esp. Teachers) need to understand that not eveyone learns that way. 99% of teachers learn that way (out of a book), and so did I, but I learn a lot better when its hands on. I see so many students that are called 'stupid' because they are hopeless at grammer or reading and the system has given up on them. All they need to be shown is their 'groove'. I know that sounds dumb, but once a student has been shown HOW to learn, you will see them speed away. Most people forget that all children are natural learners...they are like sponges!

Example...At the moment, I teaching for gears work (ratios, idle gears, power Vs. speed etc). I could show them picture after picture and give them 1,000 example out of a text book and maybe 50% of the class will understand, but if I give them a couple of different gears, some axles, a motor and a battery box, I gurantee that the whole class will understand.

Hey we are totally on the same side of that issue.  I would not have dropped out of school if I had teacher who actually tried to keep me interested or who taught in a way that I appreciated.  The youth of America should for sure have more options on how they are taught and what kid of schools they want to attend.

I guess my point in the midst of all of this is that people in America do not have to care and therefore they do not care.  The American dream as it was first know was brought about by the huge influx of poor immigrants who came to America hoping for opportunity.  They just wanted to get a fresh start, work hard for their families , and live comfortably in a good society.  Now after years of comfort and opulence Americans have lost that drive.  The new dream is to do nothing and be rich for it.  Make your money work for you.  Be a rock star.  Get rich or die trying.  And the youth of America really truly believes this will happen.  And if it does not then we will just inherit dads money so who cares.  I personally do not agree with this complacency.  But I understand it.  Many people scoff at "first world problems" as if they are nothing at all.  And in reality they are nothing at all.  But perception is reality.  So try to cut us spoiled Americans some slack.  It's not that we are stupid.  It is just that we don't give two shits about the rest of the world. because who cares about the rest of the world when you live in America?

I so feel like reviving this thread...
But I won't....

Wait, I just did right ?

So, yeah actually no one cares to know where are located your states, mkay ?
Same as you don't care about knowing where France departments and / or cities are... That's the kind of thing only people of the country are interested in...
Hence there's no comparison with what was seen in the video : we are thinking global here, that it to say we are looking at the world as a whole. Sure, as I stated it before, there are stupid people everywhere, but it happens that people from US tend to be way less educated... Like waaaaaaaay less.
I don't know why, cause I don't know US education system or your country enough, but from the very little I saw, I would say it all revolves around you guys not caring about the rest of the world and seeing yourselves "superior" (cf. Team America World Police for exaggerated cliche  reference, but that's what I want to say).

There's no bashing in there, I'm just stating my opinion. And that doesn't mean that the rest of the world is better than you, nor that I am nor whatever.
For your recall, it also happened that I left my country (France for those who still don't know) cause I thought it was too shitty, with too many assholes, so don't give me some patriotic bullshit, I'm trying to be objective here...

Oh, and on a sidenote, and for the little it's worth mentioning, my best friend here in Hong Kong are from America, so don't give the "anti america" bullshit either...

But ok, ill weigh in here just for fun

I think it is very inaccurate to say that US citizens "tend to be way less educated" I wont sit here and try to feed you some BS about how the education system in the US is the greatest in the world, because I sure as shit dont believe that.  But I also dont believe that we are at the bottom of the barrel either.  And I dont think that it has anything to do with with us not caring or seeing ourselves as superior either.

Look, the video that started this whole thread was mainly about current events with a little bit of geography in the mix.  That has very little to do with the actual education system.  Especially since the people they interviewed are obviously out of the education system ( IE working adults ) So blaming those stupid answers on American education is just wrong.

And sure Americans have a long standing tradition of having maybe a bit too much pride.  But I dont think that we are elites or dont care about anyone else.  I think you will actually find that most americans are bleeding hearted pussies.  But how can we possibly stay current on everything going on in the world?  Its all about relevance.  If an issue does not effect someones life directly then they are way less likely to know much about it.  So the only way they would get that info is from the news.  And well to be honest our new media isnt the best public educator.  They are more about drama than education.

Simply put.  America has enough shit going on.  It is a very large country ( the continent you are from is just barely larger than the country I am from ) With a very diverse group of people from many different back grounds with many different agendas in life.  You cant possibly expect every person on the street to be current on every event going on in the world.

I think its a grand thread to get started again.

Nothing to do with American bashing, but more to do with Education (or the lack of it).

Trey is right, I don't think Americans are dumb or uneducated. Its the system. I see so many kids who are labeled dumb or dyslexic because it is easier to put them in remedial class than it is to auctually spend some time and sort out why they're not learning.

The Education system needs a shake up (not USA, but everywhere). Teachers are a dieing breed. We're grossly underpaid and underresoursed (my budget last term for technology was $250.00)

i guess in many countries there are way too much elements of capitalism in the education system.

some years ago we had our own academic graduations here in germany. called diploma and magister.
you have been pretty free in your studies. you could chose which seminar you wanna take and which not.

now there is this bachelor/master shit all over europe or somewhere which has the aim to make the students compareable.
it also comes along with predefined schedules just as in school. its really ill. all students have the same basic knowledge because they must be fully integrated in economy.

its the same thing with schools. kids arent free enough to make their own decisions. they all become synchronized in order to breed effective workes.

its just almost impossible for these education systems to have really smart kids.

There is an old chinese proverb that I was taught many many moons ago:

Involve me, I'll understand

That still rings true for me.

True... But I actually talked about a proportion there, not an absolute number...
And I am no accountant by the way, I'd rather stab both of my knees with spoons than being an accountant actually... :)

In all seriousness, I'm sort of convinced of what I'm saying. That doesn't I will never change my opinion, but till I go there and see how it is first hand, from all I saw, from all I was told, and from the results of my thinkings, I'll still think that most of americans (I'm still talking in proportion here, mkay?) are "under cultivated / educated".
Sure Variable, no one can be aware of everything happening in the world, far from me to think this kind of things, but I'm pretty sure most of people tend to pay more attention / interest to what's happening in the world than you guys do (proportion...).
That could indeed be due to the fact that your country is bigger so you already have lots of stuff to figure out at home. Doesn't sound too stupid.
But I guess it's still mainly due to the fact that you guys are mostly not interested by everything happening around the world...

I'll take that example to prove my point :
Quote from: nonesuch on Jul 07, 2008, 01:07 PM
Its just because America is on top and is a target,   Jealousy is a stinky cologne

That's how I see most of you : proud of your country, thinking you are the best, and that everyone envy you and therefore wants to attack you.
Therefore centered on yourself, and not caring about the rest of the world because you see the "outside" mainly as a threat.

But actually it is not...
Title: Re: oh noez!!1
Post by: Variable on Jul 08, 2008, 01:19 PM
alright man.  Think about it like this

Say you are a professional sports player.  You play in the big league.  You of course will keep up with what is going on within your league.  But do you really think you are going to give a shit about whats going on in the minor leagues below you?  You will probably know a lot about the players and teams within your own league.  But does it really matter to you that some minor league rookie had to get knee surgery and is out for the season?  Probably not.
However if you are in that minor league.  You will probably know everything about your league, but also keep up with what is going on in the major league.  You will of course know everything about your league as it applies to you.  But you will probably keep up with the major league in great detail as well.  That's just the way it works.
Maybe if you are a major league player who came from a minor league team you will keep track of your old team a little bit.  Or if you are a major league recruiter you will pay attention to the minor league to see who is the new up and coming so that you can use them to benefit your team.  But other than that the only people who give a shit about you are the people who dont live near a major league team, or who are too poor to buy major league tickets.  It sucks, but its a fact of life.

Is that to say that America is the big league and every other country is just a minor league wana be?  Well, perception is reality.  And there is a great tradition of pride in ones country within the US.  Believe it or not, many people still see the United States of America as the land of opportunity and are proud to be living within her borders.  And others are proud of what they think America could be and proud of their efforts and protest to mold the country into the symbol of freedom and opportunity they believe it should be ( see I threw a shout out to the liberals ) So if someone perceives that they are currently in the greatest nation in the world ( true or not ) then that is their reality and they will act accordingly.

You have to remember that in Europe you can hop on the highway and see SO many other countries.  Practically any other country besides those who are in the Americas.  In the US we can hop in our cars and see another state.  Unless we drive too far south where we find a country where everyone seems to be trying to get to our country.  Or too far north where we find a county that shares a very similar history and culture.  And although guys like you and I have been to a lot of places around the world.  Most people dont get those opportunities.  Exactly how high of a standard do you have for the average citizen of the United States?
Title: Re: oh noez!!1

too high i say. and to say that americans arent interested in world events is ridiculous. most of our news programs, on every platform from print to online to tv, local to national, always include information about world events. true, there may not be stories about the price of olives in germany, but most major stories are covered well. for instance, after the earthquakes in china and the tsunami in burma, there was a week straight of coverage that usually led the news. ive had the privledge of going to europe once before and to be honest, there was very little information about anything but that particular country being reported. dont get me wrong, there are a lot of people who could care less what happens outside their front yard, but to say americans in general are less aware/educated just shows how ignorant you are. and as for being cultivated, the US has the some of the finest museums, stages, symphonies and universities in the world. we love us some arts :)
